Inverted winger and fullback/wingback combo is a staple of modern football, isn't it? Attacking the half spaces is all the rage for a lot of managers these days. FM reflects that well in the match engine, I believe. Anyway, another banger of a video!
I found your channel accidently. I have been playing FM for a few years now and this page has so much intermediate knowledge that is sorely missing from other creators. Every video I watch I have an "aha" moment. I've been binging and replaying your videos multiple times to retain everything. Amazing stuff. Most informative FM youtuber today.
This is my second comment and about the fourth or fifth I've watch this even, I also subscribed. I'm possibility going to do the domestic treble in the Welsh Premier league and the key to it is a 433 system where the IWB is way better than the standard of league I'm in (he's more like a playmaker). He is exploring his options for next season but this season I have him and he makes all the difference. My first full season with my third team after being fired twice. I got fired in my first job only after 5 months. My second job I lasted 5 years with a promotion to the top league by winning the Division below. Also you make great video's with clear and visually precise demonstrations. Keep it up.
thanks for the comment and support :) one thing I always like about FM is the ability to have a role seemingly be a perfect fit for a player. And yea, the IWB is a sneaky creative role; especially how they can get unmarked into the half spaces
one combo i really like is the is the inverted winger (A), CAR and FB (sup) combo. The inverted winger starts out wide and cuts inside, usually pulling the opponents wide defender with him. while that the CAR drifts out wide and the FB starts to overlap. its especially broken if the CAR has the "plays 1-2 passes" player trait.
"the duality of FM" might've been a bit heavy handed from me haha, but I thought it illustrated the point so I left it in. Always got to look at the postive sides too!
As always i love the little nuggets i pick up from these videos, great work again. I now know why the wingback IW combo drives me nuts and i generally avoid the IW all together. that flexibility in attacking decision tree is just against the way i set teams up, and helps me explain my frustration.
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker It's mee-NAY-roh. Hope you are having good experiences with the team👼. Also loving how these videos double down for me as "best role combinations to use on my next save".
Oh thank you gods of Football Manager for giving me a video of the Teacher about my most used offensive flank. Thank you! Especially when other FM content creators are so bad
@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker especially true when the two players have a strong partnership. So you think off the ball changes the way they exchange movements?
7:30 Necessary "BRASIL MENTIONED" post Lovely stuff as per usual DLP, especially as someone who uses the IW/FB combo on the left hand side of a tactic that ended up winning me a pentagon (and then some) challenge outright during this cycle.
This is my team in real life 😍. You should have dropped this video last year before we lost the Libertadores and Brazilian Cup finals 😂😂😂. Someone could've managed to show our coach.
When I was doing some research for the video and the team, I think I came across a replay of that match haha. I really like what I saw from them!! they've been a lot of fun to use (in FM, not the real life match lol)
Great video as always. The only thing I don't agree with is the mobile/roamer midfielder. As the flank players provide lot of movement I like the midfielder on that side to be more stationary. But that might be because I am more of a pragmatic 😅
Amazing work again. I’m just wondering if your face is expecting cold weather, only joking DLP I’m actually jealous that I can’t grow any manly facial hair. I’m going to try a 433 with a WB att, IF support and carrilero on one side and a FB support, IW on attack with a DLP on support the DM will be a Halfback. Keep up the great content. Much love from the UK
just finalizing my transformation into an FM Bob Ross 😂😂 and that's such a good setup. WB/IF on one side an IW/FB gives your attack so many threatening options. And I always support using a DLP haha. I would try a striker that drops deep too; maybe a False 9/Deep Lying Forward/Target Forward depending on who you've got
@ I was wondering which striker role would be best, i know there’s potentially a gap in my midfield so hopefully dropping deep will help plug that and also create space for my wingers to exploit. Thanks for your insight. Oh I had to google Bob Ross wow pmsl 🤣
The Wing Back likes to stay in the wider areas, and that can cause issues with the Inverted Winger (who also likes to stay in the wider areas). Because the Full Back likes to drift inside sometimes, this makes them a much more complementary role towards the IW :)
TLDR stay wider on both cm's when your team is in possession. I may jump the gun on dlp here but i was just talking about this with a freind today as we watched liverpool play ipswich who were essentially using trap outside and invite crosses so the midfield was totally full. As a result, both gravenberch and macallister were drifting wider when the team has possession(which you can apply to a cm in fm) to offer passing options and pick up the ball and force ipswich to come out and engage them. I had the same issues with my 4231 and noticed slot doing this a couple weeks or so ago, and i put it on my players and suddenly we werent turning the ball over for direct counters, they picked it up wide and my midfield ball progression was quickly turning defense into attack.
great combination guide. so for fb + winger combination i know so far was inverted wing back + winger wingback + inside forward fullback + inverted winger what about the complete wing back?
maybe I'll do a CWB and Wide Target Forward guide. The WTF likes to hold up play and is a little less ambitious in his movements; CWB is the opposite 😂
Another great video and a pairing I have in my current tactic. I find that the IW can sometimes get low ratings and not feature much in the game, any advice on how to get more out of them in these situations, as I find they don't contribute to the play?
thanks! and thanks for the question. One thing to look for is when you've got the ball in your own half. Watch the IW for a bit... most likely, he's going to be out wide near the sideline, waiting to receive a pass. When they get the ball, they want to be able to choose whether to stay wide or cut into the half space. So what our the player roles around him? Is there a Carrilero or Mezzala that are also moving into the half space, cutting off the IW's movement? Is there a Wing Back on the same side that's running out wide too, crowding the space? That's not to say those roles won't work with the IW, but it's a few roles to look out for. I mentioned it in the video (at least I think I did lol) but the IW is actually a tricky role to implement for these reasons. Hope these tips help a little :)
@ yep, an IF is for sure easier to implement (for me) into a tactic. You pretty much know where they're going to be and what they're going to do. And you're right on, they are more attack minded.. the trade off is that you lose some of the IW's (slightly) more dynamic play
the big thing i find,as dlp showed well in the video is the dribbling more with the inverted winger. so having roles that take advantage of that and gives him runners in behind to pick out will show up in the match rating column. however he may just be doing donkey work for your team, staying wide, picking up the ball, dribbling, then cycling possession back from the byline. so while he isnt a good match rating he could still be essential to the overall performance. Like a Bay leaf in a stew, you might think it dosent do anything but your stew will taste better with it.
for sure! I found the versatility of the Full Back, in this case, to be more effective since you can use the two of them in more formations. Plus, the Full Back has the defend duty, which again gives a little more flexibility for your tactics. But definitely, a CWB could work 🙂
I have a question, how would you adjust if the opponent trap you outside? I been playing 433 possession style shorter pass, slightly short tempo, play out of defense. I recently facing opponent keep force my play to wide/flank. And my player keep playing the ball to flank area and then loss possession in wide area . Usually the RW and LW, IF and IW keep losing the ball. I try multiple method switching player roles such as using FB, WB, IWB and midfield like CAR, CM, B2B, Playmaker role to give passing option for the LW and RW. Play narrow, focus the centre. But none of it seem work.
hmm.. that's a good question! Did you try a different formation by chance? Changing just your formation (and leaving your instructions the same) should keep your tactical familiarity. Maybe trying a 442 Diamond? Basically remove the option for your team to play out onto the wing.
It wouldn't be my first choice for flank pairings, since at times you'd have two roles doing the same thing (staying wide, getting in crosses). Not to say they couldn't work together, but may take a bit of experimenting if you want to use them together :)
I was thinking about having a 4-4-2. Right side defensive winger, right centre forward pressing forward, right cm as a ball winner, while on the left having an inverted winger and a full back. How about this?
What I love about DLP is that his tactics are so simple and effective. How often on YT and the forums you see a tactic with every instruction ticked!
thanks :) I always say: a proper combination of formation and player roles will get you 90% to an effective tactic. (small print: results may vary 😂😂)
@@TheDeepLyingPlaymaker Simple player roles are also the best!

My favourite role combination. Good tip on the roaming midfielders 👍 I will give it a try.
I've been loving them recently. And yea the roamers could be that third part of the trio to create a lot of havoc for defenders
Never stop DLP
