I absolutely love An American Werewolf in London, it's my go to Werewolf Movie, and one of my favourite films indeed. my dad and his Brother (my Uncle who years ago was tragically murdered) Loved this movie when they were growing up, me and my dad adore and cherish this Movie, we even did a drawing of the Movie and we put it in a picture frame, You're Attempt at a British Accent was not too bad, but there is something about The Moore's and The Slaughtered Lamb pub. are they part of a secret satanic cult who sacrifice people to The Werewolves or are The Moore's a Secret Society of Werewolves? or is everyone who's a frequent in The Slaughtered Lamb Pub all Werewolves themselves? much like what The Howling (1981) did with the retreat, Jenny Agutter almost turned down the role of Alex, as she was reluctant to do a horror film. She's glad she didn't, and is proud of how beloved it's been over the years. Jenny Agutter back then was so damn hot, I bet a lot of Young and Older British Men must've had the hots for her, and did you There was to be a sequel involving Debbie Klein trying to track down David and having nightmares about Nazi mutants. Eventually, she would have found David's nurse Alex, who had also somehow been turned into a werewolf and is dating David (whose soul is trapped on Earth for some reason).i've never showed any interest in watching An American Werewolf in Paris (1997) i've heard it was crap. please do a Movie review for Jacob's Ladder (1990), The Edge (1997), The Breakfast Club (1985), Footloose (1984), Event Horizon (1997), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Frequency (2000), Blade Runner (1982), Taxi Driver (1976), Wolf (1994), Fandango (1985), The Deer Hunter (1978), The Towering Inferno (1974), One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975), I'm actually from Scotland and I love English People, they're out Brothers/Sisters and Cousins, The Werewolf Transformation in An American Werewolf in London i think it's arguably The Greatest and it's most Graphic

And one thing I noticed one time, not sure why it never clicked with me all the hundreds of times I've seen it before, but did this one time. The cops talking to David in the hospital. One of them is very skeptical about what David is telling them, the other is open minded about the whole thing. Fast forward to the ending, when Werewolf David breaks out of that cinema, the two same cops are there, the skeptical one gets his head bit off, the open minded one survived without a scratch. I feel John Landon did that intentionally. 😉 Anyways, this movie, it doesn't top Ginger Snaps as my top fav, but it is a VERY close second, like millimeters apart. And I enjoyed this video. Thank you, Cody.

This video really showed why you're one of my favourite film reviewers out there. You clearly and concisely showed acknowledgment for the great parts about the film, provided a unique perspective on details that I never thought to look at through that lens, and explained why for you certain aspects aren't as strong.
I do really love this film, it's without a doubt a revolutionary horror film, but I really don't think its for everyone. It's got a very lackadaisical pace and tone for a lot of it that I don't think is always super engaging. As you said it's got a very British style of humor, which as someone from the UK I think it does decently, but even I'll admit I don't find it that funny. For me I think the humor comes from more situational stuff, like the hard contrast of these super well-spoken Londoners suddenly getting attacked by a werewolf, or the occasional reaction every now and then to the weirdness of the situation. The horror aspect is definitely what resonates with me more.
The way the werewolf is portrayed I think is the best we've seen in a film, in terms of how little it is shown, how brutal and fast the kills are, and the sound design for it, jesus it scared the shit out of me when I was younger hearing that howl. The scene on the moors at the beginning I think is masterfully done horror and a prime example of what you don't see being more terrifying than what you do see. All that said, I actually prefer the werewolves in The Howling, I mean they're nearly identical just with longer ears and on two legs, but to me the whole half man/half wolf premise works better when they're two legged. Plus upon rewatch I think that The Howling whilst an interesting premise with solid moments is a bit more flawed as a film, for me it'd be third or fourth on the list of best werewolf films.
The story in An American Werewolf in London is basic, but it to me feels more like they were going for a Wolf Man type story, not really trying to do too much new with the whole werewolf premise but more so seeing what they could get away with as far as surreal visuals and gory effects.
For me Dog Soldiers is the best werewolf movie to show people who aren't big into horror, its got a much faster pace and for me the British humor works better there since the attitude comes off like the characters in that are more pissed off than scared of the werewolves. That's definitely more of a crowd pleaser type horror film.

It traumatized both my brother and I as I saw it when I was 5 or 6 and my brother when he was 11 or 12. Freaking woods scene where he is on the bed got to both of us. I didn't watch this movie until a few years ago for that very reason, and it still scared me. I totally agree with you about the transformation scene, and the balls to the walls ending. My theory for why they freak out about the pentagram, goes back to the OG Wolfman. The pentagram might be their “werewolf alarm”. If anyone points out the pentagram, it might signal to the others that a werewolf is going to attack the person/people that noticed it. Hence why they kicked Jack and David out.

    • @skyofthelivingdead
      @skyofthelivingdead ปีที่แล้ว +1

Something to note is that it’s not even a pentagram. It’s a pentacle, which isn’t a symbol of evil at all. Quite the opposite, actually; it’s a symbol of protection. So using it as a “werewolf alarm” actually makes sense with that context.

Fair enough. A thoughtfully rendered critique. Here are a few of my thoughts:
With regard to your "negatives," I wholeheartedly agree with your criticism of Naughton's performance. He just isn't a good actor. His dullness and everyman quality is no doubt why he was cast, but his inability to imbue those traits with any emotional depth may explain in part why you find this movie not entirely satisfying.
I can't disagree with you more, however, with regard to Landis' use of tone. The "imbalance" is exactly what Landis was aiming for and it's what makes the film exceptional on a narrative level. The awkward style keeps us "off-balance" intentionally, so we're never quite certain where a scene will land. In that respect, it effectively maintains an unrelenting suspense throughout. Landis is fucking with us, and we love it! Oh, well, most of us do, anyway!
Also, the quick, matter-of-fact sexual relationship is essential because it ultimately contributes to Nurse Alex' palpable sense of guilt after she witnesses how his suffering caused by what she misperceives as mental illness worsens immediately thereafter. Boundaries were crossed, and now he's paying the price. Sure, how "guilt" transforms to "love" is not made entirely clear, but it wouldn't be the first time the two emotions become confused.
And that leads to my final criticism of your review. How the hell could you not mention Jenny Agutter by name and acknowledge that she brought a depth to her part that wasn't otherwise apparent on the written page? To dismiss her character as simply a "hot nurse" is nigh offensive, and ignores the fact that her performance provides some of the much needed complexity that you believe the film is lacking.
She's wonderful, and one of the most memorable elements of the movie!

Cody, 2 things. 1. That is how many Britains are. We lived there for nearly four years and the locals wouldn’t talk to you because they knew you weren’t born there but had moved in and twenty years later they still wouldn’t talk to you because they remembered that you had moved there. Different areas of England treat visitors differently. 2. The actress that plays Alex is Jenny Agutter. She is in Logan’s Run as Jessica 6 and in Child’s Play 2 as Joanne Simpson. If you haven’t seen Logan’ Run, the movie is fair; it’s worth a watch. The book is better. Love the channel. Keep posting!

I have a theory that there was no werewolf, it was a reincarnation of his survivors guilt and his urge to self harm. Whenever he transforms into the werewolf, it’s the urge to self harm taking over him, The theatre scene was a hallucination (All scenes with dead jack were) of jack and random dead people giving him suggestions on how to end it but really it was him talking to himself about how he should do it. And the scene when he was killed by the police never happened, it was self inflicted in a alleyway right when the nurse found her.

One thing I would add Cody was the howl sound effect itself in this movie. That first howl when they are walking down the path is horrifying. (at least to me) Also, did you ever see the 1987 Fox TV series Werewolf? The practical effects in that show were spectacular as well. They were done by both Rick Baker & Greg Cannom (Howling)

I genuinely really love the first 2/3 of this film. The relationship with his friend and the fear of what’s gonna happen when her turns is excellent. The relationships and guilt aspect are top notch. Of course I also have to mention transformation scene being one of the best of all time in practical effects. I also genuinely love the setting and background this film takes place in. Everything from the bar and open fields to the streets of London itself. It definitely sticks out among the small amount of werewolf films we have. Where the kinda falls of for me is the ending. Don’t get me wrong the ending is good, but it just leaves me with a feeling of “we should’ve had another 20-25 of this film”. I feel like if the maybe gave audience a little bit more to chew on in the visual realm and maybe knowing a little bit more about the background of the werewolves in London, it could truly be a film that people constantly talk about like Halloween all the time. Give us more but keep the ambiguity. As the ending is a little underwhelming compared to the build up of the first 2/3. Other than that, it is one of the, or is the best werewolf film of all time.
This is definitely on the list of “if a classic was remade” it would fall in the middle. It doesn’t necessarily need a remake, but I can totally see a remake adding so much more and doing certain aspects way better.

The first time I saw this movie was when me and my mate went to go and see it at the cinema just before they closed everything down again due to covid, and I really loved how balls to the wall insane this movie was.
The tension, the comedy, the gore, the practical effects, everything about this movie is awesome

I genuinely think Alex doesn’t truly love David and just tried that at the end as a sort of "let me try this and see if it works" and the fact that it doesn't only adds to that nihilistic end

    Excellent Werewolf Movie!
Rob Botin actually did the effects on "The Howling"...The story goes, Botin asked Baker to help him out with part of an effect, because he was working overtime on "The Howling," and not getting much sleep... To the point of not sleeping at all.

It's funny that you mentioned being curious about seeing a modern remake of this. A few years ago, Landis' son was at one point attach to do a remake of American Werewolf in London. However due to some accusations against his son, the remake is sort of put on hold. I say sort of because the last update on the creative side was back in 2019, when Robert Kirkman (the creator of walking dead, invincible, and the producer of Renfield) joined as a producer.

The Howling came out exactly the same year in 1981 and the special effects creature designs were done by Rob Bottin (( Who, as we all know, would later work with John Carpenter in The Thing remake in 1982 ))..

I need to put the howling on again, but im salty that American Werewolf is my favorite werewolf movie. Its fantastic and unconventional, but upon seeing it, i always feel like we can do better. Storywise, we have. Nothing quite captures the essence like American Werewolf in London
If Late Phases had these effects, it might be my favorite

Been looking forward to this review as it's a film that is one of my favourite horror films of all time. The humour and the horror work perfectly for me so maybe you are right it is a British thing when it comes to the humour side of things. Great review and I'm interested in your review of the sequel after what you said about your history with both films. I hate the sequel, but if anyone prefers it fair enough. I actually prefer Howling 2 (absolutely love that movie) to the first Howling. I'm probably in the minority of one in that opinion as most people think Howling 2 is garbage. To me it's one of the most ridiculously entertaining horror films of all time with the best end credits ever put on celluloid.

Really looking forward to next month’s 31 on 31! I don’t know if I’ll have time, but I’m trying to watch/rewatch all 31 of the werewolf & vampire films for that video. Right now, I’ve already watched nine of the movies. But on An American in London, this is a great horror movie. What I’ve always held onto most about this movie is that it’s not specifically like anything. It has elements that are like a whole bunch of things, but as a whole, it’s not really like anything. More times than not, I really enjoy movies that don’t neatly fit into certain genres. So while the werewolf transformation is phenomenal, I really like how unconventional the story plays out, and there are a lot of moments I think are quite funny, I’ve always enjoyed this movie for its uniqueness in not cleanly fitting into a certain kind of film.

This movie defiantly has the best makeup based transformation of any werewolf movie today. Rick Baker deserved the Oscar for this movie. I also really enjoyed the remake of The Wolfman Rick worked on as well. I also agree that the Slaughtered Lamb patrons are jerks too. I am looking forward to 31 on 31 next since werewolves are my favorite monster movie type.
