  • Any time your paper gets wet and is allowed to dry unrestrained it will cockle. So I thought I'd share a handy process my printmaking professor taught me many years ago. This will remove the cockling from works on paper without disturbing the image. It works for prints and watercolors and I've seen it done to photographs although I haven't done it myself to photos.
I don't get anything if you buy from these links but here are some of the things I used in the video:
    Blotter Paper: www.dickblick....
    newsprint: www.walmart.co...
    synthetic felts: carriagehousep...

Very good. I want to try this on an old print which has cockled in its frame.

Cockle? I barely know her! (I was at the edge of my seat fearing the PUBG-Pad would topple over)

Hello....very nice video. thank you question: I assume the moisture in the newsprint does not disturb the watercolor? right? You didn't mention it but I thought I would clarify.

      That is correct!

Thank you so much. This is the best method I have seen to flatten paper and without the 24 hr holding period! @@someprintdude

Any advice to fix cockled paper in a book

Hopefully it is not too many pages! I would probably lightly dampen paper and place the damp paper in between every other page to impart the minimum of moisture. Then remove the dampened paper and place it in a book press as tight as possible to flatten all the pages at once. Then leave it locked in the press for 24 hours, afterwards take it out and flip through the pages to unstick and introduce some air and send it back into the press. I'd repeat that until the pages feel warm and not damp.

@@someprintdude so dampen a separate piece of paper and with said paper slightly wet every page once all pages are slightly wet then put it in press?

      @@someprintdude it’s a bible and it’s every page unfortunately

Yup that is basically it. It will be tedious but the alternatives are much more time consuming (disassembling the book and flattening pages individually and reassembling it)
