    I've "lost" at least four bulbs during power surges or lightning strikes. I have done the turn off five times reset thing. The app find the bulb, it goes through the colors but then it times out and won't connect. I'm hesitant to buy more expensive bulbs that are supposed to last 20 years when they don't make it through one. I loved these when I got into them over a year ago but as they have been dying off one by one and the app can't find them I'm very disappointed. Not sure what to do.

    I found the definite fix for the connection issue:
    Fix for "An unexpected error has occurred", Android app times out, shows no progress, does not connect to your Wi-Fi.
    Issues with settings in your router prevent the light from connecting, and you don't want to figure them out. Here is the work around. Everyone reading this is expected to have some knowledge of what I'm about to talk about.
    You will need two phones.
    1. Turn OFF the wireless router you want to connect to.
    2. ENABLE hotspot on one phone. Broadcast the same Wi-Fi name and login as the one you are trying to connect to.
    3. On the second phone, connect to the WiFi being broadcasted by the first phone. Open the LIFX app.
    4. Follow the procedure to connect the light bulb.
    5. After connecting the bulb on the app, you can go back and DISABLE the WiFi broadcast on the first phone.
    6. Turn ON the regular WiFi in your home. Wait for everything to connect. Finish the setup there if you want.

    I've been having trouble with some bulbs dropping connection to my network, so I bought a Wifi extender. My bulbs were originally set up to connect to my network's name Home_2.4GHz. The extender's network name is Home_2.4GHz_EXT. This is my first experience with an extender. My question is, will the LIFX bulbs automatically connect to the extender (and its network name), or do I have to do setup again for all the bulbs, but specify the extender's network name?

  • @Wykfo
    @Wykfo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thanks, that 5x lights off trick fixed my issue. From the cellotape on the packaging I assume Bunnings sold me a second hand light as new and it wouldn't pair because it was already paired with the app of whoever returned it. Given the three year warranty from date of sale that doesn't really matter, but I think I'm annoyed enough about the time I wasted that I'm going to go back and make them swap it for a new one regardless.

    I have some smart plugs that work on the 5Ghz and some smart lightbulbs that work on the 2.4Ghz. My router has both signals. They all work for a while but then just go offline all at the same time. The way to fix it is to turn off and then on the router. They will work again for a couple of hours and then go offline again. Can you help me with this matter?

    Hey TWB Please do an updated video on how to setup and connect a LIFX bulb.
    some time ago they updated their installation software and it sucks.
    Every LIFX bulb I have set up since they "upgraded" the installation software it
    is a real pain to set up. Look online you can find people who spend hours, or longer, repeating
    the setup process and people who have totally sworn off this brand because what should
    be a straightforward setup process to be something that appears to have been greated
    by Third Graders.
    I apologize if that is offensive in anyway, most of the Elementary School Children in our area could have probably done a better job.
    Thanks

    Here's a question I've pondered ahead of buying 4 LIFX bulbs for my cave.
    If my Alexa is on 5ghz and/or my phone is connected to 5ghz wifi, how will that affect the connection and commands (for Alexa) when LIFX is connected to my wifi at 2.4ghz?
    Will it still work with both my device and Alexa?

    • @TechWithBrett
      @TechWithBrett  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it will still work. Once they are connected to the internet it doesn't matter what network you are on since they are just being control over the internet.

    I have a question. I'm going to put 2 bulbs in my ceiling light. If i put my lights off from the wall switch and i put a schedule fror ex. 6AM will they still light up though they are put off from my wall switch?

    • @Jeriamy
      @Jeriamy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Only if it's a smart wi-fi switch. A traditional switch cuts power to the lights so there's no way for them to turn on. They won't even be connected to your wi-fi anymore. You keep the wall switch on at all times and use the app/voice assistant/schedule to turn the lights off and on. It can be difficult to break yourself of the habit of hitting a light switch when you enter or leave a room. You can buy various covers or guards that will stop you from being able to accidentally turn the switch off by habit.

    I already have one of the lifx mini bulbs that is connected to my phone and to the app. I am having trouble connecting a second light to my network + phone + app. When I hit add Lite it pulls up my first light that I already have set up. I have even taken that light out of the socket so that it should only hopefully read the second brand new light. Under where it says select light it shows my first light then it just keeps spinning as if it's trying to search for a light. I have no idea why this is not working but it would be nice if there's a better way to connect a second light to my account.

I want to separate the living room lights from the kitchen to have 2 separate areas, but also want those two areas to be 1 sometimes. Do I need to give commands to two separate groups to match each other’s condition or can I make a 3rd group called great room that has both the kitchen and living room groups? Or can I assign 1 light to 2 different groups at the same time?

    I had massive connection problems with these bulbs turned out to be another router on the network had DHCP enabled which was assigning an IP not in the range of the network I was connecting to. Hope this helps someone else with issues connecting these bulbs. Just so you dont stuff your network your main modem router needs DHCP enabled but no other routers should.

    So even though this certainly should work - it didn’t for me. I have both an android phone (Galaxy S8) and and iPhone 6. I had issues setting up using the app on both. I reset my Xfinity router/modem, I reset my bulb countless times to no avail. I called Xfinity to check what my bandwidth was to make sure it was at the LIFX recommended 20mHz (Xfinity confirmed it was). However, the rep was able to do a different reset to my modem and stayed with me on the line as I tried the set up again. VOILA! Both my A19 & LIFX mini work now :) I hope this helps anyone who is having the same issue. You don’t have to run out and buy one of the routers LIFX recommends ;)

    The 2 bulbs are plugged in but when the light switch is turned to on it does not light up. So no power going to bulb.
    There was no issue with the previous screw in bulbs

    Can't help but notice the bulb flickering at the dimmest setting 6:20. Is that just the camera out of sync with the light or what?

    • @TwoCablesOCN
      @TwoCablesOCN 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the way LEDs are in general. CFLs flicker too. Even incandescent lights flicker, but their flicker is much less of a strobe and more of a super fast and smooth dim/bright flicker because it's a 60 Hz flicker with a burning metal filament.

    Hi Brett
    Great tutorial! You done a better job than the people at LIFX. Could you please do a tutorial on how to set a new schedule for each light. Thank You very much !

    • @TechWithBrett
      @TechWithBrett  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AverageTraveller That is a good idea. I should have mentioned in my video. Youn start by going into the same place where you add a light. Then choose new schedule and you can then select what lights you want. If you want the schedule to take complete care of the lights you will need a scheduled time to turn on and one to turn off.

    I have a a 19 bulb and I haven't been able to reconnect it since I updated my internet got new router that's all I can think . Always worked great. now I reset the bulb maybe 20 times and try to reconnect and it doesn't work. Very irritating this bulb was like $90 Canadian I change my internet and can't reconnect

    • @TwoCablesOCN
      @TwoCablesOCN 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      These always need to be set up on the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band. I think getting a new router means your lights will have to be set up again as though they are new since it's a completely different router.

    Finally worked:
    support.lifx.com/hc/en-us/articles/204087310--An-Unknown-error-occurred-
    Hardware Reset your LIFX
    Wait 15 Minutes
    The light should now appear as a Wi-Fi network in your app's Wi-Fi settings
    Connect your phone to the LIFX Wi-Fi network
    Go to the LIFX app and follow the setup steps
    This should allow you to onboard your light, when the Wireless Accessory setup is not working.

    Alright, Brett! This video is a couple years old but I'm gonna comment here my process for connecting the first time, and my extra step from the last 4 days of trying to reconnect my bulb after holiday.
    Set phone to Airplane mode, but turn wifi on.
    Tell both lifx wifi and home wifi NOT to auto connect
    Force stop Lifx app
    Switch bulb on & off 5 times and wait for blinking to stop for a fresh setup start!
    Start Lifx app & do setup process.
    All of that still didn't work for me this time (my second time setting up the light, and took 45 mins over 4 days to troubleshoot, app and directions no help)
    I added one last step this time... forgot I had a low battery saver level turned on since vacation, turned that off and tadaa, connected!

    • @XantinovaX
      @XantinovaX 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I forgot to add, my problem 1st time was I still had mobile data set to 'on', remember to turn off mobile data.
      Also give Lifx app Location permission.

    The Music Visualizer is a fraud. It makes the lights flash in a pattern that would make any bulb look like it's going to the music. I have tried it in a perfectly quiet room and the lights where flashing away just like would with music. Get the App "Light DJ". It is great and lets you do all kinds of great effects.

    I have the Mini. I go to the area with the little color circles and I can't find the 100% White setting. There needs to be a totally 100% White circle at the top.
    There needs to be an option where you can turn the light on and play music from your phone whether it is on your device or from an app such as Spotify or Radio.com app etc.
    It would be nice if you could download for Free from the app different themes such as lets say I want the light to change from any certain color such as Red to Green and it repeat. Or I could make the light turn on Red then go to Purple then to a total 100% Yellow then I can make the light turn on Green and stay on for a longer time or less of a time.
    If I could set it up so if I am trying to find that color to relax your eyes at night to get your sleep pattern back to a good one this would be helpful.
    I saw some plugs along with the display and was hesitant to purchase them because I didn't know If I could operate multiple devices until watching this video.

      It's because these must be set up on the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band. Once that's done, you can go back to the 5 GHz band.
