In my lifetime, when I was young, there was practically NO mention in media of gays, and the few mentions were extremely negative, usually trying to make a villain character look more "creepy". As a fmr research scientist, I can assure you that his description is not one of pseudoscience. He tested the hypothesis by taking objective measurements and crunching the numbers. Can't get more Scientific Method than that.
