  • Hi guys! I present to you a comparison of playing rally games with a controller vs playing with a steering wheel. Can you tell which side is the controller and which side is the steering wheel? What are the main differences, and are they really that significant?

    Good play with a controller. But playing with a steering wheel is actually more immersive. That's the main reason to have it, indeed. We all started with a controller, which is probably why some people think it's for beginners.

      For dirt and WRC I am so much faster and consistent with a controller.
      Code masters FFB and handling feels very arcady and builds a ton of bad habits when switching to other sims and real life.

      @@Jumpboy5100 there really is no time difference GENERALLY between the two, but most top sim drivers when in competition use a wheel and meticulously change settings for each car and track, unless you're using a higher end controller, being able to control brake and acceleration inputs is a game changer

    Was able to hit top 10 on some DR 2.0 Group B leaderboards with a ps5 controller (on pc). I've tried both controller and wheel and was able to get some WRs on both.
    The main difference is obviously the FFB on a steering wheel helps to "guide" your steering where on a controller you have to put more thought on smooth steering so you don't upset the balance. Also better throttle precision with the pedals. The dualsense was way ahead of other controllers in this regard as the adaptive triggers help tremendously with throttle control (especially on a high powered RWD or AWD like group B)

    True story: Funniest wheel user's "I feel more immersion" statement I ever heard, continually came from an online friend back in the 360 Forza days, and make no mistake he was an absolutely brilliantly skilled gamer. Once, I set up a race which didn't allow the racing line to be visible, so he left the lobby.🤣

    • @imagineracer
      @imagineracer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A good story, but it's more about the individual characteristics of your friend. The steering wheel really expands the potential capabilities of a gamer. Although the essence of my video is about the same - it’s not so important what you use, how important how you use it. Whether it's a steering wheel or a controller. Using both, you can enjoy the process and get the result.
      By the way, I tried Audi Quattro in RBR and now this is one of my favorite cars in this game. Audi Quattro cars are truly amazingly made. Thanks for the recommendation!

      @@imagineracer I agree. I used a wheel all through Forza 2, 3, and 4, but the "immersion" came from trying to simulate the decisions in real driving, which would itself be a lot easier if my local council would just put a shiny row of arrows to follow along real roads. Don't have room for a wheel now. Running 3 PCs tucked into the corner of the family living room with a 3D printer, so zero desk space and no floor space for pedals. The wheel is boxed up and stored away in the loft, but I still have the same fun with a (pretty wonky) controller. If I drop enough hints, the kids might get me a new XBone controller for Xmas.😇 Edit: I just looked at some old Forza 2 scoreboard screen shots. I ended up 40th out of 2 million on the career event table!!!

      Having space for the steering wheel is also an issue. My kid also asked for Xbox controller for Christmas, so I'll be borrowing his original controller from time to time. In the meantime I'm using a PlayStation Classic controller (that's why I don't use analog thumbsticks, I don't have those thumbsticks). Also from a gift for the kid🤣
      Yep, cool score!

    I get it. But like others said you don’t play with a wheel to go faster. You do it because it’s easily the most fun you can have in life. I now have a full rig with cockpit , triple screens , shifter , wheel , E brake , etc. It is without a doubt the greatest thing I’ve ever done for myself. Flying through the air literally feeling my stomach turn and hitting a perfect e brake corner in RBR is better than sex. You can get a G923 for 200 bucks. No one who ever got a sim rig says “oh man this thing sucks”. Zero.

    Excellant controller play. I think I'm pretty good with a controller but im lucky to get in the top 200 after completing a moment. I play bonnet view. If I had the disposable inome I would love a wheel, pedals and cockpit setup. Its the best way to play and compete.

    from a person who own a DD wheel: controller is superior in tight hairpin turn because the ability to rotate the wheel much much faster than wheel user. that being said, wheel user have the advantage on the shifting because of the shifter, making speed control much more easier than controller.
    TLDR: controller have advantage on steering while wheel user have advantage on shifting

    • @imagineracer
      @imagineracer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "controller have advantage on steering while wheel user have advantage on shifting"
      To be honest, on flat, high-speed sections, it doesn’t seem to me that the controller has an advantage on steering. Especially if the road is narrow and there is a risk of catching a rock, curb, etc. Especially if I use thumbstick. It's easier with a D-pad. If we talk about sharp maneuvers and turns, then yes, it is likely that the controller shows better results here.

      @@imagineracer indeed. some minor counter steer is hard for joystick but that can be compensate by pull the left joystick up or down and then steer a little by little (learn that trick on youtube) and set beside all that, there're some mad lads out there who actually set WR using keyboard on DR2 so i think it's mostly fall to individual skill lol

    I use controller in forza multiplayer if its a race with a car i know i can do well in/set a good time OR its a higher class car usually S class and up ill always use controller.....if its a car/race im not familiar with on multiplayer AND i know that even on controller i wont be top10 or better then i use a racing wheel and just focus on being smooth vs trying to really race. Single player im always on wheel, good practice and no pressure i can just reset if i have a bad turn or w.e.

      @imagineracer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't have a steering wheel yet. But in truth, I'm guessing that I'll also enjoy arcade games like Forza and NFS when playing with a steering wheel. The point is essentially in the individual degree of fastidiousness and hypercriticism of a particular person. So who knows...
      The only thing, I read is that cheap steering wheels break quickly in such games. But I'm saving up for a direct drive.

  • @ogelanteranova
    @ogelanteranova 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    This is weird. It's much easier to get a good time with steering wheel. Unless you just recently got behind the wheel. It takes time to get used to it. But again, just a few days usually will be enough. That's what happened in my case. At first you are delighted but you won’t be able to handle steering wheel at the same level as controller before.
    Controller allows you to make faster turns on segments with frequently changing direction. Otherwise steering wheel has a huge advantage. Especially if you skillfully use gearbox.
    This seems to be a very lazy attempt by the driver with steering wheel. I don't know though, I'm not an expert on this stage.
    Hairpins, 90-degree and 1, 2 turns will also seem more difficult at first after switching from controller to steering wheel. But once you learn how to properly use steering wheel, throttle, brake and gearbox, it will be very difficult to beat your time using controller. Not impossible, but difficult.
    Of course you can drive well using both, but steering wheel gives you a big advantage. Here you can compare not the number of strings on guitars, but different types of guitars. You can play acoustic guitar very well, but you have limits. On electric guitar, you can use and amplify gadgets, plugins and basically anything you want. Here the limits of possibilities not achievable for acoustic guitar.

    • @imagineracer
      @imagineracer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As for me personally, yep, not even close. It's gonna be a difference of 5 to 10 seconds. I play with cockpit view in DR 2.0, but very rarely. This game is too beautiful to stop playing with chase camera.
      Perhaps after purchasing the steering wheel I will rediscover Dirt Rally 2.0 (but it's not for sure).
      How can you refuse the effects of dirt, landscape view, weather conditions, drift, etc. with chase camera...
      RBR is very cool with cockpit view. And Dirt Rally 2.0 is too cool with this style of play.

    Im pretty sure if you practice enough with a controller you can get amazing results. The only problem for me is that I cant really translate my own driving experience through a controller. It feels bizarre. Kind of a older dude here. So I lived through the rise of analog sticks. And for the love of me never managed to really master controller smaller inputs. So I end up driving like a maniac who cant make the car go straight. And yet with wheel and pedals I can rip through stages no problem.
