Listening to this song and re-experiencing Gormott playing the DLC is when it first hit me.
The Torna "era" is meant to be a call back to the 1920's. The gold, the angular and geometric elements found in Torna's architecture and emblem, and especially the jazz.
In the characters, I think Addam embodies this hopeful passion for life as well. It boggles my mind how well the soundtracks for XC2 and the Torna DLC were handled.

@@maximmillennia Thank you! I want to extend it further into a take on the corruption of things in the early 1900's, but there are so many metaphors within metaphors in these games, unraveling that has been a challenge.

Nah I like the original better, my favorite theme in the game actually. This is my second favorite by association of course.
They basically just did an over-the-top(in a good way) Jazz cover of their own song. That's just crazy.

They really varied almost the entire chord progression and made it incredibly unique. It gives Torna its own atmosphere over the original game to an extremely successful extent.

Ladies and gentlemen, the best overworld song in RPG history. There is no more competition. Everything about this song is so expertly handled and professionally performed. No instrument ever drowns another out. Percussion is on point. Freestyles are even incorporated. This is an absolutely beautiful track.
Isn't it sad how underrated as a series Xenoblade is?

@@brink7894 there is no such thing as "traditional" jazz. Jazz has evolved so much over the years and encompasses so much music, you can't really say that some jazz is less jazzy than others
@@Rides1283man actually i can. traditional jazz uses chord progressions built on 2-5s and has a down beat on the 2 and 4 in a 4/4 progression. generally speaking it’ll be more focused on improvisation so that each individual player is allowed more self expression. comparatively, acid jazz takes those concepts of improvisation and uses a more electronic sound to it, with a more standardized beat; for the most part they land on the 1 and 3, which is relatively common in western music. it uses a lot of the same concepts as traditional jazz does; colorful 7th chords, improvised layers, etc. but the music is more focused on the demonstration of unique chord colors than the demonstration of improvisation, as well as being “funkier” than traditional jazz. much of the torna OST gets closer to traditional jazz sounds and ideas, being improvised and having very natural sounds, whereas persona has a lot more of the poppy, acid jazz sounds. my original comment, admittedly, was a bit hyperbolic for the sake of getting likes, but don’t act like i don’t know what i’m talking about. when i hear this song versus a persona song, i’m calling this jazz before i’m calling persona music jazz.
@@brink7894 since when was traditional jazz the "base" of jazz? Although you could consider things that started jazz, like New Orleans jazz as "traditional jazz", how does that make other forms of jazz less jazzy? Jazz changing over the years shows that no subgenre of jazz is "truly" jazz or the "standard" of jazz. Classifying and basically treating different types of jazz inequally is the same mindset of people who considered bebop as a betrayal of jazz. All types of jazz are jazz, period. There is no need for jazz to be closer to so-called "traditional" jazz in order for it to be jazz.

According to an interview with the game's director the jazzy soundtrack for Torna was because he watched the movie whiplash and because of that he really wanted to include jazz into the main game's soundtrack, but it was too late to change up the music style so he just saved it for the dlc.

I accident,y bought this instead of the main games 2nd part. Honestly didn’t mind the confusion, still an excellent game. Definitely one of my favourite video game OST’s of all time, it’s very underrated and an interesting fighting mechanic

2:53 has been my favorite part for years.
My first time will be an experience! This familiar land that you’ve started your journey on, 500 years ago with more lush greenery than before… and this BOP! I liked the comment Jin made about it being unfamiliar land, then taking it back (touché from the writers). I didn’t even want to fight any monsters because I just wanted to listen to this song in its glory.
I never watched the movie but thanks Whiplash for persuading Tetsuya Takahashi to request the music team to make Torna and every subsequent Xenoblade side story to be jazz heavy.

My favorite part is at 2:54 when the chords are instead of repeating like in 1:17 (Fmaj7 to Em) go to (G C) which is come's as a surprise since even on the original track from xc2 they don't resolve that way. It's like a breath of fresh air, after all this time.

I never even liked gormott's original theme but when I got here, MAN I was losing it over the motif coming back and it was so vamped up and JAZZY MMMM this very well may be my favorite theme in the xenoblade franchise and that is SAYING SOMETHING

Back in 2018, I got a Switch at christmas, it was literally for this game, and had this one song for motivation, now it's the same, but for a game xd
That sax invokes emotions in me that I cannot explain, it reminds me of fond memories I had when I was a kid, and going on late night drives.

I never really got the appeal of the original Gormott theme, it felt like a weaker and less memorable version of Gaur Plain

this has to be recorded. There's too much detail for it to be computer generated. If you listen very closely you can tell.
If you want to compare live track to a synthesized track, listen to the "Hidden Machina Village" from the original Xenoblade and the Definitive Edition. The Wii version of this song is synthesized, while the switch one is recorded.

@@weirdo7319 yeah. Live orchestras are very expensive. I doubt they were given enough budget to record all of the pieces. They can pay a composer, a transcriber, and a few engineers, or all of that plus 30+ musicians, they could save thousands of dollars.

They had a real choir, at least. The one from Prague. And I think some musicians are named in the credits, too.
As much as I love this jazzy remix, it would have been nice if a smooth jazz version played at night; it just feels weird after playing a whole game where there's a night theme for every area, and then switching over to the DLC and only having one track play for day and night.

@@loaftreos3825 How would it be 1.5? This is an expansion to a sequel of Xenoblade 1, 1.5 would give it closer proximity to Xenoblade 1 than the main Xenoblade 2 game has, which would be wrong. It'd be 2.5 if anything, the Gormott theme in the main game would be 2.0. And honestly this is a pretty far cry from Gaur Plains at this point.

@@loaftreos3825 Okay but it was released after and is a supplement to 2. It isn't an in between game for 1 and 2, it exists only in relation to 2. The Gormott theme in the main game was created first, and this is a modified version of that. That would make this either 2.5 or 3.0. Though I say that very loosely, as like I said before, this version of Gormott does not at all carry the same energy or vibe as Gaur Plains. The soundtracks should be gauged in order of release, not in order of chronology. Soundtrack discussion is a meta discussion, so using in game chronology for it makes absolutely no sense. End of discussion.
