Turn of the Century Travel Trunk Restoration

  • I believe this trunk is pre 1900. It was covered in paper and put together with old cut type nails. It was eaten up with worms, however I do think they were inactive. I treated the entire box with a Borax solution to take care of any if they were still there. I left the top intact, but disassembled the box to make wood repairs. The finishing process was shellac, stain and three coats of Arm-R-Seal satin poly. I painted the inside with several coats of oil primer and top coated with a few coats of interior oil based semi-gloss. Cleaned up the hinges but did not re-use the original lock as it was rusted out on the inside and didn't have the key anyway. If I ever come across one at the market I'll add it later. this was an in-house project to work on some skills and challenge myself. Thanks so much for viewing. Please comment if you have any suggestions for my channel.

    100% the best trunk restoration I've seen on TH-cam. Fantastic!! It's so hard to color match new wood with the old but you did well. Good call putting it to the bottom. Seriously amazing work. Only channel suggestion is keep doing what you are doing. I love the variety you bring and it's nice to see the work. Take it easy brother.

    Nicely done David. Your probably doing it for the love of saving something from being forgotten and the experience. Just my guess.

    Any reason for not taking the copper to the bottom side of the box?

      Thanks! No reason, just a personal preference. This is one of my videos from last year so hard to remember exactly. LOL. Thanks for watching.

    Dear Friend, it was a nice job indeed. I would like to make two suggestions: you would have put one more chain on the left side of inside box and another one is after stuffing the box with material is it not better to put two handles on the two sides for lifting purpose?

    • @westhighlandsshop
      @westhighlandsshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the comments! I always appreciate others thoughts. I was surprised that the trunk did not have side handles originally, I did look for evidence. I just decided to leave it as it was. It's probably just going to be a display piece anyway. Keep sending suggestions!

    I almost didn’t watch this because I was thinking I’d see some schmuck make a big mess out of something that was already a big mess, I’m glad I took a chance! There are so few people on here who have a shop and know what they are doing and I look forward to seeing what else you you come up with! I am lucky enough to have 2 steamer trunks that came to America with my great grandparents from Poland around 1910. It was common for old trunks to be covered with wallpaper inside and out if they were of lesser quality and trunks of a higher quality would be completely sheeted with metal outside and a wallpaper inside. That’s the little bit I understand about them.

      @westhighlandsshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I'm glad I didn't disappoint you! I knew very little about these old trunks and this was my first restoration on one. I did figure out that is was some type of paper or wall paper once I got into it, and I figured the inside was lined as well, the paint just didn't seem original. I decided to honor the last "restorer' and paint it back. I will make a tray for it and replace the lock at some point but I needed to move on! Thanks for watching and hopefully my future content will keep you interested.

    Why did you shellac before stain? Seemed backwards, im very curious as to the reasoning, great video by the way

    • @westhighlandsshop
      @westhighlandsshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the older antiques I like to shellac first especially after a lot of sanding. It seals the grain and let’s me control the color a little better. Thanks for the comment!

    Very nice restoration. It was a great idea flipping around the box itself. I remember seeing similar trunks and other old relics at my grandpa's place growing up.

    Hi. I enjoyed the video. You did a great job. I do some restoring myself so I understand when you say it was a challenge. Good call on the gel stain evening out the color! I must say I am not a fan of the brass screws with black hinges but that's a personal call.
