Honestly I am thankful for the speed of your presentation, I’m always speeding TH-cam videos up otherwise I lose interest. Perfect upload helped me with exactly what I needed to know thank you .
Thank you so very much for saying it how it is! The chart on your blog helps determine when companies are talking about the same medium.but use a different name! Thank you thank you thank you!
Thanks for making this! I work at a craft store and love to paint, but i didn't know what half of the mediums did! Finally I can explain this stuff to my customers, and i get to use them better myself!
Thank you for explaining all of the different types, it can be very confusing because there are so many different types !!! I love the fact, also that you're not sponsored by certain companies which means you aren't bias and give true opinions. I ❤love❤ your videos and tutorials, they are up there with the best of the best ones. Best wishes from the UK, Rae xxx
And I need to study it well. I have not painted acrylic before and have bought lot of different colors but I am so confused in how to mix anything. Your program is great to really use it like a guide to go to stores and continue buying mediums and not knowing how to use them. Thank you for your good presentation, great, thank you.
Oh bless your sweet painterly heart for going over mediums! I so appreciate all the work and wisdom you share. I can't wait for your medium chart! THANKS :)
Omg thank you! I'm new to acrylics. Really, new to painting in general. I love it. It's an outlet for me to release, so I want to keep doing it. But, man, it is overwhelming when you start to see all the different mediums and what they do--very discouraging. I finally feel like I can digest some of what I've been reading. You rock!
This was incredibly helpful! So many different options can make your head spin in the art store! I also want to start impasto painting and think I will use window caulk to practice. Thanks
Great information, bias as I see below , hold the bottles still they are moved around too much so next time hold the bottle still or on the table for 30 seconds so we can see the product name and manufacturing company. Thank you for all the information.
One of my teachers said that we could use a coat of clear gesso as a ground for colored pencils to give the paper tooth. I use Golden's Self Leveling Gel as a glue and as a replacement for "dimensional magic" and things like that. I compared 5 brands with Goldens and they all did the same thing and the Goldens is cheaper in the long run. I just put it in a small bottle with a tip.
Perfect timing!, even if I am a few years late for this party I just made a list of almost all of these when I was cleaning & sorting in my craft room. I wanted to see what they were good for & how many of them were interchangeable. You saved me a lot of time by already doing all the work for me! Thanks.
Oh man I have watched and learned so much from so many of your watercolor videos you are one of my go to artists in that medium and I’m venturing into acrylics and I had no idea that you used acrylics too and I am SO thrilled that I’ll be able to learn this from you as well!!! Your a great and knowledgeable and entertaining and enthusiastic fun person to follow and for that I wanna day thanks and also don’t ever stop being your unique self!!
I'm new to painting & your video told me everything I wanted to know about all of the gels & mediums out there!! I can't thank you enough for this wonderful tutorial (or primer😁)!! Looking forward to watching more of your videos!!
THANKS for all your help. I never understood the difference between gels and gessos...now I do!! I paint with acryllics and do lots of collage..the heavy gels make wonderful patterns and forms. LOVE the texture on the canvas. I am still not clear on the Pouring Gels...but I will I will figure it out. Your excitement comes thru!! good job.
Question: what medium would I add to watercolor/dye reinker to give me the look of wet/glossy? I assume I would need one of the glossy mediums, but not sure which one. What I want is the look of WET even after the piece is dry. Thank you and so grateful you were finally able to do this.
Thank you so much for this video, you answered a lot of my questions. I had a good idea of the basics but I'm glad you showed some of the more affordable ideas, I would have never thought of window and door caulk. I also would love to find those interference colors, those look like fun to use.
A very informative video on Acrylics and its mediums and other things that you can use with it. I like just using it right from the tube and like an oil at times. I do find some brands far too runny also. Have a nice week. Marie
Wished you would publish a book on all of this information, and include all of the newest products and homemade hacks! You are such a great reviewer and I trust your input!!!
14:00 A bit of trivia for you: We had the Golden Rep come to one of our Watercolor meetings once and he said that the Goldens used to be called modeling paste, then when someone was doing a new run of labels, they mis-spelled it as Molding Paste and they had already printed thousands by the time they discovered it so that's how the name got changed to Molding Paste because it would have cost too much to fix it.
Thank you for all this info, and I personally don't t mind how fast you talk. In fact I find your enthusiasm very infectious!!! Gives my old arse the kick it needs!!! LOL!
Thank you! I see gel medium used A LOT for adhesive and I wondered what made it special. I have been wondering if I wanted to get into mediums. I have gesso. I think I will try the interference colors. I didn't know the candle painting medium existed. That looks like fun! THANK YOU!
I have also heard of KY jelly to slow the drying of acrylics. Tho not tried it yet as I'd already bought the artists slow drying medium. So that's a way of being able to save a hefty amount of money by using the KY
Your videos are so helpful !!! I have been trying to research what medium does what ... you just answered all my questions in one video !! Thank you so much !! Love ALL of your videos !!!
Wow! I learned a TON in just the blink of an eye!! Holy cow you talk fast! I had to pause the video a few times just so I could let my brain, ears and hands (I was actually taking notes for later use...) catch up with what you were saying. Hahaha! I love, love, LOVE that you get so excited about your passion but... could you slow down just a little for those of us that are still out here in the weeds with what to do with all these super cool goodies? You rock Lindsay!! :D
Loved your well prepared presentation. I won’t take time to watch those unprepared who use a lot of unnecessary chatter, not to be confused with a good sense of humor during presentations. Maybe a little fast but beauty of the videos, can be slowed, stopped to take notes etc. I learned a lot without spending a lot of unnecessary time.
Thank you so much for this video. As I am exploring more and more of the art world I was beginning to be confused with so many different mediums. You broke it down so nicely. I will be re- watching this video a few times so I can be sure to choose the right type of medium for the project I want to do.
Pam Pirtle I have a printable chart of mediums on my blog too: thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2015/04/28/the-frugal-crafters-guide-to-acrylic-mediums-chart-included/
Thanks Lindsay so much for a great video, so many mediums, so little time...I have some of them, just haven't used them yet...now maybe I'll venture forth!
Thank you. You explained this very well. It takes a bit for me to understand. The Gels just made me wonder why do I need them? LOL. Because I hear people using them often. Great Tutorial :D
Thank you Lindsay .. I learned a lot from your informative videos putting light for some of things I don't understand .. now I can go to Art store with confidence and know what I need
Guess I ran out of my limit of characters. Anyway those paints would get so thick and I didn't know how to thin them out. Learned the hard way that just because they are water soluble it doesn't mean you can add water to them. Ruined a few jars that way. Now I am starting to understand how to make my own because I have all the metallic pigments. I can make my own. It used to be such a challenge to get glitter to adhere to the surface as well. Whew! Thanks so much for your valuable teaching videos. It has given me the courage to try and ask questions in the art supply stores where I was so intimidated because I wasn't a "true" artist. I guess we all are in our hearts☺️
+knitting storing paints in a box upside down will seal out the air especially if stored for a long time. the most important thing is to not let them freeze, it will ruin them.
Loved this video. I don't use much of these types of mediums and have been wanting to get gel medium to use as an adhesive for sand and those tiny beads. This helped tremendously. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for the great video and information Lindsay! They all look like.....I want them!!!! It is so funny how we see things being used online but see the price and hang our heads...hehe. I love the fact you try to show there is an alternative, for us just starting out the cost is a lot. The interference paints look so pretty, I think maybe that will be my next expensive purchase. To add to the other things I collect, now if only to learn how to paint :). Thank you again for sharing.
Can you do this again but a slow down versions and some trials so we can see what it can be used for. I watched this a few times but it really good but fast and a lot of information to take in
Jessica Wil That would be so nice! There are some of us that need a little longer to process and/or visually see to get a good understanding. she is amazing with so much wonderful info. just too fast to process and have to pause and watch multiple times. this woman is a genius a
I loved this, thank you so much! I also loved your explanation of frugal alternatives. I will be picking up some caulking! I started out craft painting and my big go to was lightweight spackle for texture. Also since craft snow (which can be used on a painting) can be pricey, I would build with the spackle then top it with a thin layer of snow for the texture. I've given you a like and I've subscribed, thank you for being a fellow frugalist!
That last part on textures made me think of sporks! :-D. Thanks, 2015 Lindsay. Still not 100% sure how I would use those media, other than the gesso....::thinkingemoji::
One of my teachers told us that clear gesso couple be painted on paper or canvas as a ground for colored pencil to give it tooth. I use Goldens Self Leveling gel to make paintkins and also as a glue and as a dimensional medium. I compared it to 5 different brands like dimensional Magic and things like that and it did the same thing. In the long run it's cheaper if you're using a lot of it. I just put it in a small bottle with a pointed tip. Goldens has a crackle medium and they also have a Fabric Medium - it's called GAC 900. Iuse it on my silk scarves
Thanks Lindsay, another informative video from you! And you are always so enthusiastic about what you are sharing with us :) I wanted glass bead gel for a long time and finally indulged myself a couple of weeks ago and have used it and love the effects so far... but the noise/feeling when spreading it through a stencil is like grating your finger nails down a board, lol!
Very informative video! Glad it uploaded. I have question for AAC about mediums. I like to buy my scrapbook albums at the thrift stores - brand new ones only - but I don't always like the cover. I was going to sew covers from fabric but I also like to paint and I think I'd prefer to paint them. So, what should I use as a base coat? I was thinking Gesso but not sure if I'm on the right track or not. Thanks - Crafty Violet
Thank you for this video it was a great help and one that I will probably refer back to over time. There are so many mediums out there and some look like great fun to use. Would you do a video using the fabric medium or one of the other cheaper "craft" mediums? You have some great ideas so I would be interested to see what you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This was the perfect video Lindsay! I have a lot of products but I had no idea there was so many other ones. Great video thanks. I wanted to let you know I sent HP a suggestion about making there ink for crafters so it doesn't smear. The next day I got a phone call from them saying they are sending my request to the appropriate people. That is a good sign I hope. My husband said they like ideas to grow the company in new ways. ( Not exactly in those words ) So I guess we will see. :-)
Great information, Lindsey. Just wish you could have held some of the bottles still on camera, so the labels were readable... Maybe a little too much Java, lol. ;). Thanks so much for all you do, you are Wonderful.
Donna Vieira I made a printable chart with all the info here: thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2015/04/28/the-frugal-crafters-guide-to-acrylic-mediums-chart-included/
Thanks Lyndsay....I want to paint aprons and was told to buy GAC 200.So is there a cheaper way? I just add it to the acrylic paints right? Thank you sooooo much
I really liked the video .....but I wished you used some of them. I realize there were just too many but some like the iridescent ? (the blue one) I had no idea even existed and would love to see how you'd use something like that. In addition have you made DIY gesso? or embossing paste? how does that compare/hold up? Would love a follow up with some comparisons. or just show the results or point us toward past videos. thanks
I'm not a fan of Liquitex gesso, do to the smell. I love pouring medium by Liquitex, but I'm partial to Golden. You mentioned that tar gel is similar, did I hear that correctly? Thank you for your video.
babodie1 oh my, LOL! Some ads are user targeted so if the company was in your area or if you had searched a homeimprovement topic recently that could be why you got that ad:)
SO helpful! I have really been wanting to do some mixed media. I've been watching all the pretty videos for a few months now, but I am on a VERY limited budget. (I have time to watch all these videos... so put 2 and 2 together. ;). So I have watched lots of DIY videos, but which mediums do I really need, which mediums can double as other mediums, what mediums can I make myself? and I've even been watching Long Island Medium. ;) My FAVE tip from this video is the CAULK! Fabulous! Not worried about archivability, I just want to get my hands dirty. :) Thank you so much!
+Karen M I would recommend Mod-podge in matte (target and dollar tree have 2oz bottles for $1) for glueing and sealing and white gesso for priming paper and covering mistakes. And of course latex caulk for texture:)
$1 sounds perfect! Now I need to figure out how to make some pretty "chipboard" pieces out of cereal boxes... I think I can create a few templates and stamps from odds & ends and stuff outside--like I found some chicken wire, except it's not "chicken wire", it's square... and then I'll be good to go! I thank God daily for some innate McGyver qualities (and the Dollar Store!). You're the best! :) Thank you so much!
Hi, Great informative video. I have a question.... I do a lot of high speed photography where I shoot glasses of milk mixed with food colouring and capture it on camera. I have mixed acrylics with milk but it makes the reds go pink and the blues light blue and so on. I am wondering of you could suggest a medium with the same viscosity of milk that wouldn't fade the colours. I use milk as opposed to water because it's not as transparent. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am a toll painter and have found that some yellows and reds are very translucent. In turn the base coat ends up needing a ton of layers. Would using a layer of gesso fix that issue? I use a sanding sealer but I don't think that helps with the paint.. just keeps the grain from raising.
Another question. 😁 If I’m journaling and use one of these mediums over the collage or I need to seal the page, what will be the result if I try to use pens or markers on top? (I’m assuming alcohol-based pens won’t work.) Also do any of these smooth-textured mediums clog or ruin pens? Thanks!!! 😊
I've recently been looking for info on Mediums and gels etc, so I'm glad to have found yours, your videos are always informative. But nobody ever mentions Large Grain Gel or Structure Gel, and what you can use them for, expecially if you do Mixed Media. Can you help Lindsay?
Thank you so very much for being concise and to the point. No carrying on and on and on....... much appreciate your style
Thank you thank you thank you!
if you play back the video in .75x it's so easy to absorb the information at a slower rate. 😺
Those complaining should read your tip.
Agreed. She speaks super fast
omg why? people that talk to slow freak me out
this video is 20min, quiet long, so she has to go faster
Trey Irvin How is that done Trey? Thank you

Thanks for this! I've been fumbling through acrylic mediums for the longest time. This gave me some great ideas on how to suit acrylic to my needs.
I love how you give lots of info mixed with your experience and budget with practical applications. So so helpful!!! Thank you so much!!

Bernice Seigel aww, thanks:)
Thanks Lindsey! This is going to make a huge difference in how and on what I spend my limited budget! Always great to watch your video;s!

Awesome! So helpful! I have many artsy friends whom use these products but I could never figure out their purposes. Thank you!
Perfect timing! I just got that box of Golden sample sized mediums! Just branching out into the "bigger picture"! Thanks much Lindsay!!
Thanks for sharing. I have had the set of Golden gels and did not know how to use them. As usual, Lindsay to the Rescue!!! Thanks so much.
“A primer on primers”. I just love it. That sentence alone convinced me to subscribe. “A primer on primers!”

Violet Verhoog lightly sand the cover and use gesso, you will also want a varnish to make sure you can clean it.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Thanks. I never thought of sanding them but that makes perfect sense.
this was so informative!! thanks for making the video! ✨✨
thank you. can you talk about acrylics and mediums in soft flexible vinyl. ??
Thanks so much for the chart! My ears have a hard time keeping up with you :).
Thanks for doing this. It was so much information, I'll probably have to watch it again to get my old lady brain to keep it all straight.
My brain must be old too. I want to rewatch it a few times.

Thank you for this video it was a great help and one that I will probably refer back to over time. There are so many mediums out there and some look like great fun to use. ( Not exactly in those words ) So I guess we will see. :-)
Terrific explanation! thanks a lot!
Thank you Thank you, for this video. Myself being so new, there's not a whole lot of this info that Ive come across.
Another great video that stands the test of time. I need info on acrylic stuff, who has it? Lindsay, of course!!! Yeah!!! 👍👍
Thanks Lyndsay....I want to paint aprons and was told to buy GAC 200.So is there a cheaper way? I just add it to the acrylic paints right? Thank you sooooo much
Use textile medium from Delta
Nice overview. Thanks for the updates.
I really liked the video .....but I wished you used some of them.
I realize there were just too many but some like the iridescent ? (the blue one) I had no idea even existed and would love to see how you'd use something like that. In addition have you made DIY gesso? or embossing paste? how does that compare/hold up? Would love a follow up with some comparisons. or just show the results or point us toward past videos. thanks
Thank you for explaining this. From Scotland.
I'm not a fan of Liquitex gesso, do to the smell. I love pouring medium by Liquitex, but I'm partial to Golden. You mentioned that tar gel is similar, did I hear that correctly? Thank you for your video.
Great video. Now have to watch it again because I'm sure I missed things.
Sherlock Hoka I have a printable chart here: thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2015/04/28/the-frugal-crafters-guide-to-acrylic-mediums-chart-included/
Thank you so much. It's Great.
For you I watched the whole ad on treating sewage waste, why Google had an ad of filtration systems on your channel was befuddeling🎨 😄
babodie1 oh my, LOL! Some ads are user targeted so if the company was in your area or if you had searched a homeimprovement topic recently that could be why you got that ad:)
Wow, this is a very good job!
can you use the thick one as a varnish on paper that is raised to make glass looking embelishments?
Extremely informative. Thanks!
Hey Lindsay...Do you have a recipe to make your own texture paste and gesso ????
Awesome video Lindsay! Could you do one for watercolor mediums? Like what is Ox gall for? And Watercolor ground? Much appreciated!!
Benny Chavez Honetly I don;t have many watercolor mediums, I keep it kinda pure but I'll see if I can get a sample pack to review:)
very helpful infor. Thank you, for this helpful tips and knowledge
is the folk art thickenner the same they use in one stroke painter if so where do I find it ????
Thanks so much for an informative vid, much appreciate it.
haha love this and your stinginess! thanks for the vid!
:) Thank you so much!
hi have you used jerry's gesso primer? whats it like vs liquitex
VERY useful - thank you!
Hi,
Great informative video.
Thanks.
Lindsay, You're Amazing!!
Thanks Lindsay! This has been very informative! :)
also considering the glass bead one for the same purpose but might be spakly?
That should work.
