Mixing Mica Powders With Gloss Gel Medium ✨ DIY Metallic Paints! ✨ Acrylic Pouring Tutorial

  • Have you ever wondered HOW to turn a mica powder or powder pigment into an actual paint that can be used for fluid art? Let me show you!
    Today I’m using Liquitex Basics Gloss Gel Medium (regular, not extra thick) as the base for these custom paint colors. It behaves essentially like a regular tube paint in how you use it, and is thick enough to allow for plenty of mix-ins like floetrol or glue.
    I’m mixing a highly-concentrated metallic paint that can then be thinned down with floetrol, glue, water, or pouring medium, so I add a lot of powder into the gel. 3/4 tsp. mica powder per 1oz. of gloss gel worked great!

    My mica powders are from Let’s Resin! I’m using their color-shifting chameleon powders, which are SUPER fun.

    I liquefy my liquitex brand gloss gel and use it to blend my pigments for pouring and swiping. I also use the gloss gel full strength for mixing pigments to stencil and embellish pours that have dried not so nice.
    Just an FYI, using gloss gel means you should use these right up because they tend to get chunky

    Thank you for the video showing what can be made with those gorgeous powders.❤👍👍
    I'm definitely going to buy some and make your recipe into acrylic ink by adding something to thin them to the right consistency.
    I haven't decided between alcohol, water, or air brush medium.

      Thank you! I’m not sure how the powders would work in a thin medium like water or alcohol, but good luck!

    First of al thanks for making this video. I feel a little more comfortable and confident on how to do it now.
    1 question: since the paint is white in the containers and turn transparent/clear on canvas - does it affect the color of the paint? Does the paint look different on canvas since it turned see-through or does it stay the same color? It feels like it should turn a bit darker but maybe it doesn’t?
    Also, I want to see a video where the same mica powder is first mixed into a matte medium and then mixed into a glossy medium so we se the difference it makes.
    Have you tried putting a little bit of the paint in a new container and put some black in it? To see How it reacts? Cause it is interesting to know if it will react like a normal paint and just turn a bit darker or if the Interference-part of the color will be somewhat activated? Maybe it takes a little more black paint for it to really show the color it would get if it was a Chameleon-paint om black paper? I would really like to see you do a video like that!!
    And just for curiousity if you put the mica powder directly into black paint, (i am talking about small amounts cause i/we dont wanna waste a whole lot if it doesn’t go like we expect it to 😂) so put some powder directly into black paint - will 1. Nothing happen? 2. Will it give a nice shimmer to the black? Will it give the black a second color a i mean Will it turn the black into a colorshift-paint?
    Take care.

      Thank you! I’m glad it was helpful.
      The dried paint will be its true color, though while mixed and wet it may appear slightly lighter or milkier.
      Mixing a metallic paint or mica with an opaque paint will end up semi-shimmery. I like to lighten or darken my metallics with a light or dark metallic, so that the paint doesn’t hide the shimmer.
      Adding an interference pigment to a dark colored paint is an interesting idea! I think you’d want to pick a transparent or semi-transparent paint, or it might hide all the shimmer though…

    Hello from Germany :-), thanks for your Video! What kind of Floetrol do you use? I have only Floetrol from australien and Qwatrol. Thanks in advance!

    • @AnnaBlountArt
      @AnnaBlountArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Sylke! I use American floetrol because it is inexpensive here. I believe most floetrol/owatrol varieties would work as a basic pouring medium because I’m not using it to achieve a specific effect (such as a cell activator from Australian floetrol).

      @@sylketerwedow3776 absolutely Liquitex pouring medium is great! I don’t use it much because it is more expensive for me, but certainly you can use it in pouring and you can use it to thin a paint or mica powder mix!

    • @AnnaBlountArt
      @AnnaBlountArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this is exactly what I do for them! I usually do 1 part paint to 2-3 parts of floetrol for micro swipes, depending on how thick the paint is.

    if I wanted to use the liquitex gel with Amsterdam what proportions should I do? 1 acrylic Amsterdam 1 floetrol 1 gel + water?

    • @AnnaBlountArt
      @AnnaBlountArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There’s no need to add gloss gel to Amsterdam paint because it’s already paint. You can mix it with floetrol and water or just with water (depending on the type of pour you want to do)!
      Gloss gel is a way of turning mica pigment into a “paint” that can then be thinned for whatever application you need.
