- Another live performance from the last year of the Quartet at Juan-Les-Pins, Antibes, France. This one is from the performance the day earlier than the one I posted before, July 22, 1967, featuring drummer Joe Morello. The CD of the concert is available as "Dave Brubeck Quartet - Live at Juan Les Pins 1967 "
Not only great and amazing, but also those people were real gentlemen. Dave's attitude during Morello's solo tells a lot, a lot. This video is such a jewel. Thank you.

I love Joe’s look back in the 1960s. He looked more like a aeronautical engineer for Lockheed Martin then a JAZZ (?!) MUSICIAN

Absolutely! I met him backstage in Bristol (England) on Brubeck's last tour. So polite & encouraging! Also met him in London & Exeter after drum clinics for Ludwig. Such a gent...& monster-sized musician. So many of us British rock drummers drummers idolized him. And a better role model we couldn't have had!! And then his emergence as a hugely significant teacher. One of a kind! (Great clip, by the way. Hadn't seen it until today.

Now I know where Bonham came up with some of the Moby Dick stuff...this was truly Jaw-Dropping! Joe was in a class all by himself. Sad he is gone but never will be forgotten. R.I.P.

I know everybody loves the big Take 5 solo, me included. but this has got to be one of the greatest drum solos ever played by anyone, anywhere, ever.

At the end you can see Dave Brubeck crying, tears, at the sheer mesmeric beauty of his dear friend, Joe Morello, on the drums. Their performance was a two way thing of beauty of love. Between two masters. It shall not be repeated.
Brubeck played with him every night and still managed to get his mind blown. That’s cool to see.
Dave Brubeck must have been grateful and excited, having Joe in his band…

Buddy was maybe faster and flashier, but Morello’s rudiment usage and sticking technique is unmatched.

You see Ringo, Keith Moon and John Bonham listed as the best drummer. Rightly so no doubt but Joe Morello's got to be in that list too.
That's just the mainstream music press that obviously leave out many factors. Don't get me wrong, I learned to play because of drummers like Ringo, Moon, and Bonham. I've heard that Moon described Morello as "technically perfect". Obviously Bonham got alot of his solo bits from Morello. If you know about Joe Morello, you just know.
@mattc060793 I didn't know but I do now. He's way more musical than Rich, with more finesse. I'd much rather listen to Joe. And watching that left hand is a surreal experience. Technique for days!

Joe morrello is de meester van elke drummer, zijn spel op het drumstel is niet te vergelijken.
Zelf gestopt met drummen na dat ik dit hoorde. ( wiel was al uitgevonden).
En dit niveau is voor heel weinigen weggelegd.
En hij vroeg nooit de aandacht ( alleen als gevraagd)😊geniaal.

No one could beat Buddy in speed and stick control. But Joe's drumming is waaaaay better to listen to. Mucn more restrained and musical.

All about the left hand. Those double stroke rolls too. Pity the camera work detracts from being able to view the techniques.
That left hand separates decent drummers from truly great ones.
