The Dave Weckl STL Big Band Contingent: Drum Solo + "Apples"

- Big Bands! I love big bands! My path as a youngster, mainly because our high school jazz band (Francis Howell, Weldon Springs MO), had me listening to a lot of different bands, and playing a lot of that music. Of course, big band music is ONE style I like to play, there are many!
My father also helped the journey by bringing home a Buddy Rich record when I was around 12 yrs old. The infatuation started back then, and continues today, with what I consider to be one of the most inspiring, influential drummers of our time.
I love to channel Buddy and his music whenever I can - it’s of course not to COPY him - that would be senseless (and impossible!) but to aspire to
continue to understand how to support a big band like that, with the fire and passion, and the DYNAMICS, and the SWING. The texture Buddy (and others of course) created with those big drums and specifically chosen cymbals, and of course, THE TOUCH, is the real art of this type of music.
This song, "Apples" (which starts after the drum solo), has become a new favorite of mine that I wanted to play.
Here, I am playing my Yamaha PHX kit, with a specially made 14 x 24, set up the same way those guys did it back then, with a felt strip on each (Remo Coated Ambassador) head. The toms are 13, 16, 14, and 18 on the left. Coated Ambassadors on top, Clear on the bottom. The snare is my 30th Anniversary Brass Signature Snare. Again, Coated Ambassador.
Cymbals are from my left to right; 17” Evolution Effekts w/3 rivets, 17” Evo Crash, 12 and 7” Evo Splashes, 22” Legacy Heavy Ride, 18” Evolution Crash, 14 Evo China on top of an 18 Evo Crash. (14” Hoop Crasher on the 18 fl. tom for part of the solo). LP Timbale bell. ( and of course my Vic Firth Signature sticks!)
I mixed this song with a lot of the natural room mics on to attempt to capture ’that sound’ from back then. Shure KSM 44’s for OHDS, BETA 52 outside kit. I used my older SM 98’s on the 13, 18, and beater side of the kick. SM 27 (one) for the 16/14 floors.
All were recorded and monitored with my QSC TM-30 mixer (I’m to the point of needing to use in-ear monitors in most situations now to save the ears).
The band sounds fantastic, and I’m having a ball with this! I hope you enjoy it!

Couldn't agree more, for me, he is the best to have ever played drums. We all know how good buddy was, there's some amazing drummers out there. None of them come close to Dave weckle. He has everything.

For me he's the best player I've ever heard. I like a lot of drummers but Dave has always had a special something. Precision, fluidity, touch, creativity and feel on an always perfectly tuned kit. The Washington on my Mount Rushmore.
I love that I’ve seen dozens of solos by Dave and this one is completely unique and unlike any other.
His sticking is just flawless and beautiful. Even during lighting fast rolls the power blends perfectly with smoothness. It's just unreal how much control he has, no matter what he comes up with.
Dave Weckle's in a universe of his own. Unreal dynamics and control at every level. Plus pure music. Gives that Rich fellow a run for his money.
His dynamics on the instrument are superb! A real master of the art form of drumming.
It's a great time to be alive where one can access thess wonderful performances with such ease. I'm greatly thankful for these musicians for sharing their gift with us.

THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is drumming at its FINEST. Mr. Weckl has cemented himself as a GOAT for a long while for me, and this just adds to that by impossible margin... Wish he can play on forever lol

My son and I were there. Loved to see Dave adding local high school students to play with this group. This band was terrific and Dave is a tremendous leader.
I heard a tape of Dave when he was 13 playing "live" with a big band. He swung the band (well beyond his years) like a seasoned veteran big band drummer. Fast forward to the present day and Dave still continues to amaze me. This performance blew me away!

Dave is the kind of guy that shows that more is not better. He can punish the traps of a large set or a small set and leave everyone else in the dust. I remember watching his instructional videos back in the 80s. The man can groove!! Not just speed like many other drummers...he has finesse and creativity. Speed is purely secondary, in my humble estimation.

Nov 11 2023 was a busy night for shows in the STL area. There was this gig, Joe Bonamassa playing the Fox, and Jerry Seinfeld & Jim Gaffigan playing Enterprise Center. I already had tix to Seinfeld when Dave’s gig was announced, so I couldn’t make it… Looks awesome so I’ll def catch it next time.

Man, Dave is the greatest big band drummer I think I've ever heard. Nobody can concieve of playing orchestrated rhythmic kicks like Dave. And great band! The soloists were top notch! Take it on the road Dave. So much better than hearing all of these synth patches trying to sound like horns.
Butch Miles (the first white drummer to play with Basie) was the best big band drummer I've ever known.

just one of countless TH-cam channel subscribers here, Dave. ...Just wanted to say Thank You, and tell you how appreciated it is when you grant us the experience of seeing and hearing you create. I don't think you are capable of producing a drum solo that is anything less than Master-Class worthy, but this one in particular also seemed, to me, to also be one of your most *musical.... meaning there were an abundance of places where it seemed the drums were singing, not just executing chops. ..hope that makes sense.

Outstanding change from combo bands Dave. Love the adlib dynamic solo format. Form and creative mix is awe inspiring. My dad was a jazz trumpet player in CT., and when I started the drums at 12, he took me to see Buddy. He was for sure the driving force at that time. Now, it's you! Best solo I’ve ever seen so far in my life. And I’ve seen hundreds if not thousands. Neil is still my favorite, but this is pure treasure and inspiration.
