Wonderful piece of gear, does an amazing amount of stuff for the price tag. Worth the price for the granular engine alone. Workflow really is'nt all that bad, quite intuitive really, once you get the way this machine is designed. I had great stuff going on the day it arrived. Roland writes really decent manuals nowadays. Why people can't be arsed to read them is beyond me. For those of us who've been working with hardware a bit longer, all this great, cheap hardware that's been coming out for the last 10 years or so is truly a blessing. Take your time with it, consult the well written manual and have fun creating. Highly recommended!
Everyone who gets one of these... READ THE MANUAL. The whole thing. Straight through, like you're reading a novel. It goes quicker than you think, they have a very clear and consistent way of documenting, and they list EVERY little shortcut in there. There are so many features and shortcuts that make it way more fun to use. Also, make a point of learning the "Roland 7 segment alphabet." Once it clicks, their little display is a lot more usable than you'd think
@kenadhitya Yeah. The P-6 has a lot more depth to it, just a lot more features and routing options that add complexity, but fundamentally, they're built on the same basic design language. Though? i have the original 4, and the S-1 is definitely a big stepping stine between the two. Biggest thing is just read the manual. Hi Ricardo, the quantise 70% is to cater for when you play the note early, then it moves it forward to the beat. If you set it to 99%, it will work great every time you are late hitting the pad, but if you ever hit it too soon, it will move it to the next step. I hope that makes sense.
Man, I pounced on this thing so fast because I liked the idea of leaving my 404mkii in the studio and carrying this around instead, but now that I have it I can't make heads or tails of it...? It's a blast for sure, I've fallen into some really cool jams with it so far, but I am chewing through this sample pad real estate so fast. The game you start playing in your head of "am I going to mess up another pattern if I use this sample?" gets very frustrating very fast, and while resampling is an awesome feature it is only so useful when you have such limited storage to work with. The screen and the shortcuts are also pretty rough. I have an S-1 and the screen/shortcuts don't bother me so much on that, but with samplers and granular synthesis it really helps to have more visual feedback. Fiddletown is accurate! You can do some seriously cool stuff with this, but I can't escape the feeling that it's mostly designed to compel people to upgrade to a 404, which I already have. If you could do projects on this, and if it had a 2-line OLED screen, and a slot for even just a 2 GB sd card, this would instantly be more usable.

Copy/Paste IS easy... well easier than what's in the video. Press and hold the step you want to copy and use Shift + Play [copy]. Repeat this to paste. You do have to do this for every step you want to paste.
Dude this is huge! they need to put this in the manual! I wish this method didn't just do 1 instance of copy/paste. To paste the same copied step across multiple steps require a copy each time right before the paste. And if you Copy a step then decide to not paste, that copy will live in that buffer. So If you then make a bunch of changes to a step a minute later and go to copy it, you'll accidentally paste the step from earlier :/
@@RickyTinez Yeah they needed a dedicated Paste button instead of the same button for both. Personally I feel like they could have used the MFX buttons to have shift + copy/paste functions. "Fiddle-town" really puts my relationship with some Roland devices into perspective. Often I feel like I'm dealing with a bunch of isolated features that were crammed into the box (at different times). If you stay within one feature-space/mode you'll probably be ok, but trying to work across multiple features will be a frustrating journey of unclear key combos and inconsistent behaviors.
I think the quantize timing feature is really nice to adapt the quantize function to your style of playing. I know some people who usually play rather too early, for those it could be good to set this to 70%. I get the feeling that they implemented a ton of features like this that really make sense if you think about it, but might seem not very intuitive because we are not used to the feature or the way it is implemented from other machines.
I feel that, I pushed it to 80 since I'm usually late and it's been pretty good after that! -- I was just more surprised that I never noticed a want for customization on my quantize on other devices haha. It's never crossed my mind that "this quantization is weird"
HOT TIP: If you own a MPC Live 2 on a stand and own a Decksaver for it, this (and All Aira compacts) fit in that indentation on the Decksaver perfectly. Got my P6 today. Feels great
Its always interesting to me, when i see roland "groovebox" type demos, or even roland marketing, that the choice of genre is usually something "4 on the floor" and synth based, when virtually EVERYONE I know personally, who uses these "types" of machines, aa well as the "gawds" who initally made them, and their workflow, "FAMOUS"...makes some kind of (usually vinyl) sample based, "hiphop" or "boom bap", "lofi" etc....using all of the grimy effects and funky swing functions, or, the un quanitized re-sample method. I feel like thats where these types of sanplers shine, and it always strikes me as and odd, and somewhat frustrating choice, when im trying to decide if a given new roland product is something I want. I know they arent technically in the same space, but take akai for instance. People use Mpcs for ALL kinds of stuff, various genres, but when they release sumn new? You can bet you are going to see guys making sample based "hiphop" beats, right off the bat, in any review or demo. Roland, on the other hand, i believe, thinks "edm" is "cooler" and has a broader (i.e. whiter) appeal, so likes to pretend thats all thats being made with their machines......its kind of silly ro me. It was that way with the mk2....all the roland demos were "boots and pants" when they know DAMN well the first thing 75% of people who bought it, took it home and sampled a record and chopped a break beat. Just kind of silly.
It sounds like a great entry sampler and looks good but I need more visuals and less button diving so the BlackBox & BitBox are still my favourite. Thanks Ricky
hard to say since i don't have it yet, but it reminds me of the 303/505 workflow just by watching others go it at, and having USB/audio passthrough? no brainer. even if i just put it at the end of a po-33 chain for FX.
It’s nice to watch you giving those new toys a try. It’s always fun 👍🏻 And, I can also see that the P-6 is a lot of fun, too. IF you don’t own a SP, KO2, SmplTrek, Tracker Mini, etc., then I can even see it’s really useful and JUST 229 bucks. Otherwise it isn’t cheap at all, but simply not as expensive as a DT, MPC, M+, etc.
Just wanted to note that it looks like those particular 3.5mm to dual 1/4” TS female adapter cables appear to be the “Hosa YMP-137 3.5 mm TRS to Dual 1/4" TSF Stereo Breakout Cable”. These are also useful for the Centrance Bouncer and TE TX-6 or anything else where you’re running line-level stuff with 3.5mm.
Thankyou for your videos on the P-6 :D It's helped me alot but I am now stuck in that my unit does not remember the patterns that I program in. When i restart the unit, what I have programmed on that particular pattern is lost. Do you have any advice please? many thanks,
“Learning new things is hard”. Tell me about it dude! I got my first drum machine in 1989 and immediately set into a workflow of recording rhythms with the pads. Then I started writing music with a guy who asked “why don’t you use one of your keyboards to record drum tracks?” A few years later, I met another guy who called my drum machine a groove box and I was like “huh?” Another guy brought over an Elektron, “who?” Learning new things as hard. 😂
I wouldn’t really use the sequencer on this, mostly for a sample editor, I like to bounce between samplers and my Zoom Sampletrak buttons are dying. Main sampler is MPC1000 2nd gen.
The first few minutes you lost me. So I purchased it, waiting for delivery. I have the S-1 which I love, I have/had the Korg Volca Sample (the Batteries went bad and fried the board). Not coming till next week so taking a few days to learn it so when I get it, I can quickly get into it. I just like the idea where you can do a complete song on this.
fiddle town - lol . I'll bet you get a lot of x band musicians like me looking to make music with things like this, at 68 years old ,I ask what can I get to sample things, add drums loops , finish Something easy ? I may have been left behind . in 1990 I had an early version of performer a 900 page midi set up , you had to strike 0ne track of an 8 track tape recorder with a sympte code !! I remember selling it all buying a guitar and writing the rough outlines to an 8 song album . your vid is great and funny thanks
I have the J-6 from this line of Roland and let me tell you, someone at that company forgot the basics of sequencing and they are still scrambling to find someone that can figure that one out. In fact, I ended up hooking my J6 through MIDI and use the Deluge to trigger the notes. More convenient. And yes, it can be worked and you can make stuff, but damn... too many quirks!
Haha I felt the same about the 404ii, it was such a steep learning curve. The MV1 too in a completely different way (terrible pads, barely up to push 1 standard was a huge factor), definitely a Roland thing! Epic once you figure them out, but wow. The new 404 update is the biz, wonder if there's an Mv1 update, tho I doubt it.
When are they going to make the aira. K25. Style keyboard like on the boutique ones .. it would be good or maybe a midi / step sequencer because the keys look small
I'm waiting for mine. I use samplers simply and mostly work with breaks and loops, so I don't foresee any problems for me and how I work. It can do many things I always wished my 303 could, so. Shame it has no card storage tho.
Why doesn’t Roland say what the bit rate is anywhere? Anyone know what it is? I use their bit crusher in Zenology and worried that’s really all they put in here. Not that it’s bad, but I already have the plug-in. I was hoping this would be a more refined version of the Microgranny.
I spent most of my weekend trying to find one of these in a guitar center. It looks like it has a weird learning curve but I'm mostly into it for the granular.
So happy I saw this cause if YOU are having this many issues then there’s no hope for me. It made me realize I need to stick with all the livens i have as well as my uno synth pro x!! Great video. Love your dog ! And thank you!! I think Casio needs to make a 2024 sk-1 and maybe that will be in my mental wheelhouse lol 😂
I applaud Ricky for not joining the influencer ‘every new sampler is the best ever until the next one comes along’ crowd. At the same time: he did a similar video on the isla s2400 in which the workflow looked awful. I have few samplers which are as intuitive as the s2400 after getting to know it. I’ll just try this one out and see how it feels.
I don't think a user mod would be possible. I think the best we can hope for is an MK2 version from Roland with an OLED screen. Or some kind of new box that combines the best features of this and the 404 MK2
Ricky, great stuff! I realize use cases vary ergo, studio, live, etc. I'm in the market for a sampler. Before Roland dropped the P-6 I had been considering grabbing a Blackbox. Since you have fingered them both, I'd like to know your thoughts, and preference between the two. ✊🏽😏
I've read through the manual twice now and also going back and re-read stuff while looking for functionality and you keep showing key combinations that the manual never mentions
Okay so Im not the only one having difficulty with hitting the pads on time. I thought I was just really bad at timing despite being able to do it on an android phone with latency issues.
Yea that's my big "boo" with this thing. I will say having that many sample slots does help big time. but it gets really hard to start keeping track after 2 tracks lol
Brother! I love your vids! Laidback, full of info, entertaining!! But at what 3:50 or so I am already tempted to close the video. I so wanted to love this, been desperate to find "exactly that" cheap Sampler WITH a mic!! Well turns out not exactly...when I saw how many buttonsI have to press, whatz more, REMEMBER)!) to copy ONE step!? I thought nah! I've bought so many cool looking pieces of gear from Roland over the years S-50/ MC-500... all sold coz of that dangin menu diving. Heck itz not even diving, LOL! The Wavestation is diving and guess what I know it almost inside out. EASY! This here, never gonna work... so frustrating. I thought thatz the one! 😂😆🤣
Love Roland’s sound. Hate Roland’s ui. What’s new lol. That being said love my s-1 for the size and assuming this is just as easy to use once ya learn it… may grab one of these at some point lol.
Id like the ability to pair my phone and use its screen..it would mean having so much more functionality including space for the device to have another tweak option. we could have the editors and effects and midi controller options, a huge sample bank '')
Surely no one in 2024 really wants to menu dive using a 7 segment display? I would pay $50 extra for a small OLED... in my mind, if a manufacturer sets out to create a complex musical tool for artists to get value from, either provide 'nob per function' or an informative OLED display. Anyway, love the vids, esp how you film your learning process. Thats important and sets your vids apart.🙏
That's what I wonder too, like realistically how much more would it have cost to put a Nice screen? on the surface, maybe its just another $2 for the part, but then the coding and R&D to make it work with the system costs something too? But I'm with you! If the screen was like the Smpltrek or something I'd pay $299
@@RickyTinez yep. You got it man. So now we await the P-6 mk2... which of course will have a mini OLED display and true aux bus architecture based solely on this exact YT comment string. Haha Go well.
I would love for someone to make hardware that’s as fun, easy, and quick to use as Koala Sampler, but it just hasn’t happened yet. Until then, it’s the iPad/Iphone for me.
From a marketing selling point i get it, that almost every little Aira box has a sequencer built in, so it can be a mini groove box. When will there be a sampler that just samples (and does that with a good amount of memory, sample slots, adjustable parameters) for a reasonable price which you can sequence with a (again) standalone hardware sequencer, a mini Oxi One. It’s the combination of all the things the box has to do that makes it hard to do. Again, it’s probably not a profitable marketing point of view, but if i could be Roland, i would have skipped the sequencer out of the J-6, P-6, T-8 and S-1, and manufactured a Aira sequencer (Q-1 ?). Because i think most musicians will use these Aira devices as an add-on to their setup. I’ve had the J-6 by the way, invested in an Oxi One.
can we talk about the big mistake the engineers made when they put the knob below the display instead of above it. every time your twiddling with the knob you have to lean forward to be able to see what the display says behind your fingers and the knob so you can figure out what menu your dialing through or what value you're applying etc
@@RickyTinez I think it could have been interesting if the step buttons had three different color lights inside of them to let you know what mode you are in or what sort of data was on each of the steps
@@J-Hz idh about that... if i reach over and twiddle the knob, i can still clearly see the TEMPO/VALUE label. i'm pretty sure it would be an improvement to have switched the display and the knob around.
Really appreciate you letting us in on your dive into the P-6. It helps to see a musician going through steps both forward and backward as you figure it out. But man! Music makers should not HAVE to do support or become pro troubleshooters. Sadly, as much as i enjoy learning all the things a new instrument can do, i no longer have the patience to battle a non-intuitive interface to learn what should have been better documented. I just want to enjoy the process and have somethjng i am pleased with at the end. Looks like too many pitfalls where you could lose your work, or fatally break part of the track you’re assembling. Deep menus should be accompanied by tutorials from the manufacturer. An Undo of the last action taken would have been an amazing feature. Thank you for the video!
I feel you, I'm hitting that point where I just want my tools to speed up my process. OR be so creative and sound unique that I'm willing to put up with it. The P-6 will probably stick around because of how easy it is to sample and resample at lower audio rates. plus the gradual is cool, but as a single machine can't do it.

When you played the sample chromatically at 4:40 i felt like the transposing of the notes sounds better than on my digitakt 2
Huge fan of your channel btw...in spite of the rant. It's like ASMR sometimes...lol..very chill and calming, and you are a great "instructor"
It sounds like a great entry sampler and looks good but I need more visuals and less button diving so the BlackBox & BitBox are still my favourite. Thanks Ricky
First review with some real reactions, thank you
hard to say since i don't have it yet, but it reminds me of the 303/505 workflow just by watching others go it at, and having USB/audio passthrough? no brainer. even if i just put it at the end of a po-33 chain for FX.
I don't know where fiddle town is but I feel like I'm always there... Thanks Ricky!
“Fiddletown”🕺🏾 you sound so defeated when you say it😅 love your vidz. Keep on keepin on👊🏾
This reminds me the first time Ricky played with the E.P 133 K.O 😂
How menu-divey is it? Are all the features accessible via shift functions/keystrokes? Is there a specific list of said keystrokes in the manual?
Just wanted to note that it looks like those particular 3.5mm to dual 1/4” TS female adapter cables appear to be the “Hosa YMP-137 3.5 mm TRS to Dual 1/4" TSF Stereo Breakout Cable”. These are also useful for the Centrance Bouncer and TE TX-6 or anything else where you’re running line-level stuff with 3.5mm.
How does this compare to the 1010 Blackbox if i don't care about the price difference?
and we are back to fiddle town 😂
One way ticket baby hahaha
Thankyou for your videos on the P-6 :D
It's helped me alot but I am now stuck in that my unit does not remember the patterns that I program in.
Hahahaha!
Life is to short for complicating things😅
I wonder if maybe plugging in external audio disables resampling as well as the mic? It seems weird to implement fixed measures just for resampling.
Yeah I feel you, the J-6 is my least favourite of the Aira Compacts
Haha I felt the same about the 404ii, it was such a steep learning curve. The MV1 too in a completely different way (terrible pads, barely up to push 1 standard was a huge factor), definitely a Roland thing! Epic once you figure them out, but wow. The new 404 update is the biz, wonder if there's an Mv1 update, tho I doubt it.
I still like my Verselab MV-1.
How about getting a Blackbox?
Most important argument against it. By the time I've pressed (I stopped at) 6 buttons to copy one step the vibe has looong gone out the window...
You might have already disclosed this information, but what set of headphones are those?
It makes the SP-404 workflow seem graceful.
When are they going to make the aira. K25. Style keyboard like on the boutique ones .. it would be good or maybe a midi / step sequencer because the keys look small
one of the best gear review channel
I'm waiting for mine. I use samplers simply and mostly work with breaks and loops, so I don't foresee any problems for me and how I work. It can do many things I always wished my 303 could, so. Shame it has no card storage tho.
Hey hey, where's that keyboard drawer from???
Does the Aira line sound slightly muffled or just me?
Why doesn’t Roland say what the bit rate is anywhere? Anyone know what it is? I use their bit crusher in Zenology and worried that’s really all they put in here. Not that it’s bad, but I already have the plug-in. I was hoping this would be a more refined version of the Microgranny.
now boarding..... all passengers to Fiddle Town please have your boarding pass ready.
I spent most of my weekend trying to find one of these in a guitar center. It looks like it has a weird learning curve but I'm mostly into it for the granular.
Did you manage to get one?
always a pleasure watching your vids
Gas is real
that remind me some old Rick Wade on Harmony Park :-)
oooo wow what a compliment! Thank you!
So happy I saw this cause if YOU are having this many issues then there’s no hope for me. It made me realize I need to stick with all the livens i have as well as my uno synth pro x!!
Great video. Love your dog !
And thank you!! I think Casio needs to make a 2024 sk-1 and maybe that will be in my mental wheelhouse lol 😂
cool video, what is your synth draw? is that custom or you can buy that somehwere?
I applaud Ricky for not joining the influencer ‘every new sampler is the best ever until the next one comes along’ crowd.
At the same time: he did a similar video on the isla s2400 in which the workflow looked awful. I have few samplers which are as intuitive as the s2400 after getting to know it. I’ll just try this one out and see how it feels.
they are paid for that, clearly Roland didn't send any $$$ for this great little machine
There wasn't any point in this video where this looked like a worthwhile purchase.
Could you mod one of these to have the little OLED screen like the Deluge?
I don't think a user mod would be possible. I think the best we can hope for is an MK2 version from Roland with an OLED screen. Or some kind of new box that combines the best features of this and the 404 MK2
Ricky, great stuff! I realize use cases vary ergo, studio, live, etc.
I'm in the market for a sampler. Before Roland dropped the P-6 I had been considering grabbing a Blackbox.
Since you have fingered them both, I'd like to know your thoughts, and preference between the two. ✊🏽😏
Thanks for the video as always sir! If I’m honest, this one seems like a bummer
Check out the "mounting putty" made by Gorilla. Never have gear slide around on a table again. Leaves zero mess or residue on the table or equipment.
one of these days we are going to need a magnifying glass for all these new gadgets
Already do for the Teenage Engineering TX-6!
God damn I envy you so much. I live in Czech and I ordered it in Germany but even them will have it in like 6 weeks or so. Damn you logistics!!
Dobry den mate, I used to live in the Czech Republic about 16 years ago, awsome people and a beautiful country
@@valley_robot Holly crap. Dobrý den to you too my dude. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Wish you all the best.
I've read through the manual twice now and also going back and re-read stuff while looking for functionality and you keep showing key combinations that the manual never mentions
LOL the manual is DEEP, and mentions a lot. and people are STILL telling me about shortcuts that aren't even in there!
Roland version of Model:Samples... sequencer capabilities tho?
Awesome, what cables are you using for input and output?
HOSA but they're kinda scratchy... would not rec :/ Anyone have a rec that's not CandyCords?
@@RickyTinez thank you. I am using single 3.5 mm trs to 1/4 ts (into interface). I noticed the ones you have split into 2 for each ?
Thanks, always learn stuff here - great channel
Thanks. Was gonna buy this but I work fast and don’t want menu stress, it completely zaps my creativity very fast. I’ll stick with Maschine 3
I'm starting out building a basic home studio.. What are all the types if devices available? I just know about midi controllers with piano keys
The polyphonic sampling is cool
Yeahhhh, looks like fun 😅
Appreciate this channel🙏💯💯
P6 vs Circuit Rhythm for Jungle breaks?
One way ticket to fiddle town 😅
And here i was thinking this will be more direct and intuitive than my sp4040 mk2 lol
I can’t figure out how to turn on metronome or count in for record lol 😅
it's Cnt1 or something in the settings menu haha. then set it to "4" counts. Then the Pattern+REC combo turns the metronome AND count-in on/off
Okay so Im not the only one having difficulty with hitting the pads on time. I thought I was just really bad at timing despite being able to do it on an android phone with latency issues.
Hear me out: One P-6 per song.
Haha! That’s the reason I’m not buying this thing. If I don’t have a quick way to export my songs they never see the light of day.
Yea that's my big "boo" with this thing. I will say having that many sample slots does help big time. but it gets really hard to start keeping track after 2 tracks lol
That sums up the main flaw, would be cool if they add an sd card on the next incarnation like with the circuit tracks eventually.
Keeping it or returning?
Haha
Go well.
It’s like we went backwards from the ko2
Ko walks circles around this
It’s almost like it’s 80 dollars cheaper
@@rotisseueryu price has nothing to do with user interface
Such a chilled dog dog ❤️
It’s cool and priced well.. but it’s hard to compete with the sampling apps available on iOS (like Koala Sampler)
can we talk about the big mistake the engineers made when they put the knob below the display instead of above it. every time your twiddling with the knob you have to lean forward to be able to see what the display says behind your fingers and the knob so you can figure out what menu your dialing through or what value you're applying etc
Putting above it your hand gets in the way too though haha
yea UX is a tricky tricky area. Especially in devices this small! Then you start getting into all the street fighter combos
@@RickyTinez I think it could have been interesting if the step buttons had three different color lights inside of them to let you know what mode you are in or what sort of data was on each of the steps
Below the screen is 100% a better design choice than above
