Do you give private lessons?
I can't believe only 1.1k people have liked this video! There is so much information and effort put into this video - thank you so much for sharing. I'm just barely getting into audio engineering and you've been a huge help.
Not only is Colin an outstanding engineer, he is, in my opinion, the best mixing teacher on the internet. And this is coming from someone who's taught college for 35 years. : ) Thank you for all your great videos!
That's high praise! Thank you so much
Today I went through the entire 3 hours and it was fantastic. I mixed and mastered a whole song while learning how to improve it every step of the way. Thank you so much. This is very helpful and it will allow me to eventually publish my work on Spotify and Apple. Highly recommend it.
I’m actually listening to it for the second time now!
bro you changed my life never stop hope you can become my mentor one day
I find some courses way too complicated. On this video I could immediately evaluate my own processes and learn each step. Great stuff, thank you.
Thank you sir this is wonderful 😊
Huge thanks , that was helpful!
Thank you so much sir making this tutorial ❤
Really helpful and well presented. 👍
I'm loving this video as I go through, thanks for the very helpful tips!
You are a gem brother, thankyou
So helpful! Thank you so much for this.
This is a very good lessons I can now applied to my mix
1. Static Mix : Panning + Gainstaging (Level Meter)
2. Master Track: Light EQ (low & High Boost) + Light Comp (Loud Gain Reduction)
3. EQ (Boost bad, Gain Good)
4. Compression
5. Effects (reverbs + delays // use buses for effects)
6. Automation: Vocal Volume, Panninig, Effect Levels
You've absolutely proven the net effect of dozens of small changes. You said it many times that major changes are not needed, and the stage where you had finished making the track EQ and compression was amazing. I am 2 hours in and feel like I've learned so much about the basics. Great tutorial!
I think the group Broke Royals has a winner on their hands here!
This is the best thank you brother for helping me out!
I admittedly skimmed to get right into the mixing, so maybe you covered this:. What are your thoughts on mixing with headphones vs. monitors?
Nice job Sir. thanks for sharing such a Knowling.
Best mixing video I’ve found so far. Thanks!
this has been an extremely informative, concise, and clear walkthrough of the process. thank you 🙏🏾
Thanks for the effort:)
Really learning some key things that really help. Great video. Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
I’ve learned from you more than in my class. Thanks a million
Great Tutorial!
It has been quite a few years since I have worked in Logic, my 16 year old system just wasn’t working anymore. I got a new computer and still need a few other things, but I’m totally hyped! Great video, to get me going again - so much to learn! Thanks! Randy
Thank you for making this video.
Happy to help!
incredible work man, thanks a lot! ✨
Glad you like it!
This is amazing. Exactly what I’ve been looking for! Thank you.
Hey awesome! Glad I could offer it!
Phenomenal. This should be printed out like an owner's quick-start manual.
I've already shared this with key team members. THANKS.
About 10 minutes in. This already seems extremely helpful. This is exactly the kind of video I've been looking for.
Awesome! Excited to hear what you do with it
Great video! Learning at the speed of sound.
Glad you enjoyed it!
3 hours of excellence. Thank you.
🙌 Appreciate you!
This is great! Thanks!
Glad you dig it, Seth!
As an artist how can you imagine your finished work Without realization of what you’re working With? Do The Static Mix!
“If you really, really don’t like it, hit that dislike button twice” 😂😂
This whole thing is golden . Not the style I normally work on but the tips are where it's at . And that bridge vocal part with that guitar sounds lovely even in just the static mix. Thank you for this !! That level meter trick is really really helpful .
Awesome, I'm glad it was helpful!
This video and the guide are awesome. Thanks so much. Any tips on how to achieve a lofi sound?
Commenting for your algorithm - this is so helpful, and I'm not even in Logic. I know longer videos are tough from a views-to-effort ratio, so I really really appreciate you putting all this together. Thank you so much!
Hey you're awesome, Alex! Appreciate the support 🙌🏼
When will you make a video on how to actually create depth using EQ and reverb. It would be cool to hear you talk about interaural time difference, the "Fletcher-Munson Curve" when using equalization, the "Haas Effect" when implementing spacial design, and the "Phantom Fundamental Effect" when recreating low end frequencies. These are some things I've heard other people talk about but wanted to hear your side of it cause you seem to really help break them down as well.
Thanhs so much for the video, great reference and your delivery is easy to watch.
Cheers from Northern Ontario🇨🇦
Glad it was helpful and appreciate the kind words!
OMG this is an absolute game changer! You have cracked the code! what a fantastic teacher I was getting so frustrated with my subpar mixes I was looking for someone professional just like you who could feel in the gap to give me that last bit that I needed and I stumbled across you, laws of attractions, thank you very much.
Thanks
Colin has given me hope by his amazing ability to demystify the tricks of mixing and working in Logic Pro X
Colin Cross has in many ways given me hope by his amazing ability to demystify mixing and really teach Logic Pro X.
Great Info, im starting from scatch and forgetting anything I thought i knew before
love the video! Can you make a video tutorial on how to mix and master for singers with a beat thats already put together? Please and thank you!
same process ...
Hey Colin, thanks for the guide! What drums did you use for this project? Were these Logic’s stock drums?
Yes they are! Very similar to the way I set them up in my "Make logic drums sound real" series
Ah perfect Colin! Thanks for making this! NOw to settle in and watch a long form video…
And to think... people on TikTok think my 7minute videos are "long form" lol 🤦
Not even my genre of music but loads of useful info thank you
Thanks a lot for for the amazing tutorial. What settings are you using for Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro ( EQ settings or Sonarworks etc...)? What are the settings for a good mix with these headphones?
So for metal music for example, would that be a genre in which automation would be a good tool to use early for the double kick for example. Because EQ and compression will get you so far. But if you took care of it in the beginning with gain automation wouldn't that help.
For the first time I hv watched a long video
Great video
Hey thanks!
Good vid for those beginning. Would be interested in more of an advanced mix session.
This make sense 😢😢😢
How wish I have a good PC 😭
Thnx…yr mix is better than AI
Its very good tutorial❤️🔥…….
This Video Is extremely useful! it is a lot of information but very well explained. Any info on mixing horns or a lead horn on instrumentals? Would mixing horns be similar to Vox ?
Colin, Really appreciated your video. Learned so much. Thanks for doing this. You're a great teacher. I've been on this page for over a week going through all the techniques. Can I ask you a question please? If I'm using a drum loop, like the default ones from Logic, can they be divided into pieces for better mixing? Thanks so much. Big fan of yours now. Will definitely watch more of what you've produced.
I live in Bihar,India. The place very untouched of modern music having no studios around and most importantly can't put money more than buying a macbook. Your channel really helped me. Started with Garageband, and don't tell anyone, I got Logic's crack version. You are literally a lifesaver who taught me what was logic and its power.
Thanks to you. You are a blessing to all the budding musicians.
That's amazing! So honored I've been able to help people all over the world. Keep it up! You're the reason I keep putting out this content.
Thank you so much ! ❤I wanted to gift you a super thanks for this video but the function is not enabled ? :( 🙁
Very informative, thanks!
I have a question though, what about gain staging?
Have seen a lot of information about this step before mixing, how it improves the performance of plugins...
from what I was reading about this because im on the same quest as you, gain staging as it pertains to performance of plugins is valuable when a plugin modeled after analog equipment requires a certain level of input (before the plugin) to work optimally. Especially as it pertains to recordings from microphone and such, for example making sure the recording is going into the plugin hot enough for the plugin to color that sound optimally. In this case of recordings or analog modelled plugins you would use a VU meter, found freely online, to set the level to 0 before it goes into the plugins, then mix from there. Lets say you have an analog modelled compressor, or equalizer or saturation on a bus that has recorded vocals, you can use the VU meter before those plugs, to get the level to 0. Then,... AFTER the compressor, eq, saturator, you can use your fader knobs to MIX the level in the overall mix of the song. If youre not using analog modelled plugins, like for most of electronic music, then this may not be as much of an issue. For example, if you have a serum bass going into OTT, this shouldnt be much of an issue because OTT is not analog modelled. I dont really use analog modelled plugs so i dont usualy ensure that my level is 0 on the VU meter before i give it plugins. What does give a clear mix, is making sure that the average level of your sounds, for example that serum bass, doesn't hit 0db and sits low in the mix. If its only serum on a bus it should be mixed (and this is up for debate) to like -10 to -6 db so you have enough headroom to play with it later. From my experince training your ears is still best and listening where they sound in the mix. Gain staging in EDM may not be as relevant as gain staging in projects that are using a lot of recordings and analog plugs, like rock or something.
@@Loris_remix Thanks for the reply! It makes sense. Information on youtube is all around the place, so it gets confusing, especially when just starting out :D
@@tomshincenbergs3648 for sure very confusing
great video...mix vocals first....great review to start....love hearing the different tracks....and I am only a 1/4 way thru the video
Glad you're enjoying, Joe!
do you put pitch correction on all of your vocals?
Do you use Dolby atmos for music application
At 45:29 when your explaining EQ Master track processing after you finish High end and balance the OUTPUT volume by (-0.9db) how are u checking the volume reference because I only see u clicking the on/ off button on EQ. Thank you
Just using my ears to see if it sounds any louder off/on!
for some reason all of my out takes are remaining and multiplying. I can't seem to figure out how to delete them? I've got like 30 sub-tracks under my guitar track. how do I get rid of these without getting rid of the actual track? they seem to be linked?
What were the vocals tracked with?
Man, we recorded these vocals... 10 years ago, I think? (currently reworking this song for a rerelease, but keeping the final vocals)
So, I'm not positive, but it was likely an old Sterling Audio Tube mic. I think the ST69? And likely just direct into an old Motu or M-audio interface. Not glamorous at all!
If I were to track these today, I would likely go with a UAD modeling mic into my Apollo twin. But the real takeaway is that even a cheapish mic and a cheapish interface can yield great results.
How can I get the tracks to follow along?
That's a great idea! I'll upload the multitracks today and reply here when they are ready :)
You can download them here! www.thebandguide.com/thethickofitmultitracks
Give thanks!👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
philadelphia airwaves
Before was definitely flat
Kinda wild, right?
Logic Master is much better
Do you use the logic master alone on the mix bus?
Logic Master is pretty good but it becomes a major crutch if you rely on it too much. It’s totally serviceable but kills most of the depth that your song has. Plus, learning to to fully mix and master on your own is very important if you plan on actually working as a producer.
