Buying an album on cassette in the 80's: "I need to replace this, the audio is messed up." Manipulating a sample to sound like bad tape in the 2020's: "This is cool."
I can never tell if I should be ashamed of my favorite device being on Bad Gear or not. Admittedly, every episode feels like a giant advertisement for said gear, so I can't be too wrong, right? Love my little P-6, the granular engine alone has upped my Chill-hop game because it's the only genre my pea-sized brain can begin to orchestrate.
Your videos give me "despite of a, b, c downsides, I should love the gear because of x, y, x" mindset, which is very important to know the hardware limitations. Thanks!
I agree with the criticisms, but I love this little box. Perfect companion piece for the S1 and a Circuit. I've even taken to capturing raw oscs to use for BoC-inspired nonsense.
Now you've done it. You've inspired some boutique company to come out with a bit crusher pedal called Twelve Monkeys. I think I'll create a Magpie version out of old cassette Walkmen.
This is sooo on my wishlist. It looks like it can deliver the old-school sampling that somehow my MPC One insists on making difficult. Great video as usual ❤

Sure, we know that Florian is the Meme King, but this time I'm going to take the time to sing the praises of Florian the Music Maestro. The jams and the tunes in every episode are absolutely incredible, and always a most pleasant surprise to hear what he comes up with. This episode felt special for me, so here I am, extolling the musical virtues of Mr. Hat Here.
I keep coming back to this, but your first jams lately are kicking it out of the stadium ...and that finale....not sure why this word came to me, but "ecliptic" (meaning it eclipses everything else)
for the price it's a great unit especially the sample slicing attitude they afford the machine regardless of sample limitation due to stepping down in value it's about what you choose to enhance the defecit
Yeah Florian, I have tried to talk to my dog about granular synthesis. The weird thing is, the neighbors keep pointing out that I dont actually have a dog, but I am in fact talking to their dogs about granular synthesis. Weird. 🙂
You never cease to amaze. You ARE the genius mad scientist of modern music! I really wanna see your critique of Koala Sampler. It seems to just get better all the time. (The intro caught me off guard. Excellent, though!) ❤ what you do!
After watching all these bad gear videos, i find myself pondering this single question: What is so hard about just giving you a decent amount of memory to work with for samples? You would think a device that costs a few hundred dollars retail would at least have enough memory for your sounds that you could forget about that entirely, or at least let you expand it with an SD card or something.
The TR-6s and TR-8s can read samples off a SD card, but sadly for classic sampling they are pretty bad. That feature only is really useful if you wanna load non-Roland Drum Sounds onto it.
~8:41 Haha! Nice. Good stuff as usual, Mr. Pilz. This review seemed overall relatively positive, which makes sense because imo, this little guy seems pretty damn cool! So many good features in such a small, affordable box. You'd think it'd likely just be a way more basic, drum-only/focused sampler, but it's so much more. Polyphonic, chromatic playing of samples is not something you always get in something like this. Not to mention all the other cool stuff.
The very first thing I began regretting when I got my System 55 Moog clone by Behringer and started to making a conscientious effort at flipping those microscopic switches SAFELY, - is : " - Why oh why am I not an ant? (One which has a rare mutation allowing it to perceive sound, of course). But even a scant look at P-6 made me realize that if I get it as my "DJ aid box", - the entire world of living things will immediately appear hopelessly large. Roland got the name totally wrong. It ought to be called "P-L" for "Planck Length".
I bought the P-6 also and made a first impressions video. I found a bunch if caveats and more issues alas afterwards. First, congrats on this being the coolest rendition of the opening song. Second, Roland has somehow managed to simultaneously make a sampler that’s both better and worse than a Model: Samples, which is quite amazing.
Great review - spot on - agree with most stuff u said! I've had mine for about 3 weeks now, it really excels as a PC audio interface, really great sound quality and can sample whatever your hear on your PC over the usb cable - with zero setup. That makes it super handy - if ur watching a vid/movie and hear something - bam sampled in seconds without faffing about with RIAA nuked functionality of windows. Great as a portable device if stuck in transit somewhere or just jamming in the pub e.t.c.
Half way through I was on my way to the Thomann page, but then I had to check: 5.9 seconds of samples?????!??? My fantom x6 from 2002 was upgraded to 512mb. This is just plain weird - memory cost nothing....
That jam on 2:07 gives me some nostalgia. It sounds like it could have been in the soundtrack of a game I used to play back in 2009 (if I remember correctly) called Pangya.
A well deserved entry. Cause you spent so much time doing simple tasks the P-6 seems much deeper than the lacking sampler it really is. Like a modular, but in a small cheap box.
I'd definitely love to see a miniaturized take on the 90s rompler. Multilayer and multitimbral in a small form factor. Obviously it would also be fun if it had some sampling capacity like some of E-Mu's romplers had, but an expandable sample set and a good amount of modulation options might do the trick as well. You can just do a lot more interesting things with multiple layers with individual ADSR envelopes than all these single layer samplers we've got in recent years.
What you're thinking of is very high end expensive expanded 90s workstation romplers aimed at studios. The average Rompler people had back then had no modulation and not even a minimal amount of sound editing. If they were generous you got some basic digital fx thrown on top with the expansive settings list for fx consisting of "On" and "Off". Multi timbrarility and layering is another thing only the high end studio workstation romplers could did. On my 95 Yamaha Rompler the closest thing to layering is that you can play 2 different sounds at the same time. If it didn't have a midi out and better keys than my synths, I probably would have long thrown it away.
@@eightcoins4401 both E-Mu's Proteus 2000 and Roland's JV-1080 had four layer programs and were multitimbral and were both around $1000 when they launched, that was quite affordable for the time, though you needed to spend more to get the stuff with sampling capability.
"It goes without saying that you can play sounds chromatically" Considering a bunch of the SP's couldn't do that, including ones you would definitely expect to be able to do that (such as the SP-606), I wouldn't say it goes without saying.
Why is it that they are literally fighting over how little ram they can get away with? Ram cost nothing these days. I was thinking you can literally compete with an ESP32 + a cheap little 4$ oled display, and have a more intriguing unit than this. I honestly don't know what kind of .... roland is on
Even worse they didn't memory map the flash ram and stuck to 5.9 sec fixed sized slots - heathens I tell you! P-6 has 24mb flash, a 32mb infineon spi chip is like £2.00 incl vat lol
Roland S-1 ( I already have) and P-6 (on my wish list) are two relatively new Roland pieces of gear that for this price range are really awesome and are "full package". My two real problems right now are some sort of big USB power supply and some kind of sequencer to make all my button/knob hussle with all the Boutiques and mini synths easier
Interesting choice using visuals of The Prisoner to go with this amazing version of the intro theme. It bears a striking resemblance to The Prisoner Theme (Free Man Remix) by FAB Featuring MC Number 6. Which is actually incredible and everyone should go search it up.
Your music is rad, I always dig your jams. Curious what you actually use when you play for your own enjoyment. Love watching you create within limitations of cursed hardware, but kinda want to know what gear makes you happy. Cheers and look forward to next week, no matter what it is about!
I've really enjoyed the P-6 and have been using it a lot. While I'll occasionally lay out some drums and a bass line, my favorite thing to do with it is plug it into a midi keyboard, sample another instrument (a flute, for example) and create a unique poly synth. It also lets me take some of the synth sounds that I developed in Logic, sample them, and have a device (other than a laptop) that I can use to play them live. From what I can tell, it works a lot better with a midi keyboard than the 404mk2, which I found didn't go up and down enough octaves to be particularly useful as a keyboard-based sampler.
