The M2 Macs have fallen to the problems of Apple's pricing ladder strategy where the "mid-tier" option is often the one that is hard to recommend because of how much value the entry level Mac (M1 MBA) and the Pro-level Mac (M1 Pro MBP). It's kind of similar to how the iPad Air is often the iPad that hardest to recommend because it's rather close in pricing to the iPad Pro if you spec match, and the last generation iPad Pro/Air is a better deal than the new Air. The new Air is a good machine, but the price is just hard to justify because of the better options that are available in today's line up.
What we are missing is that last year, we did not have these options; we did not have two MB Airs to choose from. This is good, and if $1200 is too much, then you can buy the cheaper variant? If Apple was trying to rip us off as the anti-Apple influencers and comments imply, then they would not have given us the M1 Air as a fallback. A lot of trash talk and not much sense from some quarters.
What do you run on it? As I was seriously thinking of upgrading from my 2017 MBP to the M2 MBA as I wanted a lighter faster machine for video editing and exports.
I really think this Air would be a fantastic laptop when it finally hits the $999 price point. The previous gen Air started at $1199 as well so I won't be surprised if this ends up being $999 in a few years time.
Probably once research and development costs have been laid off and supply issues sort out better it will same with the MacBook Pro, that will also get a reduction in price at some point as it had a bump over the intel 16 inch by a good bit
I think you and Snazzy labs are both right in comparisons to the MacBook. My mom still has that machine so I use it a fair bit and it’s unbelievably light and simple, idk I could convince her to go with this M2 MBA. As an M1 MBA owner I was pretty sure I would make the upgrade if they did something fun with the new design or color options, but so far I’m not convinced at all.
My advice (as always) is to buy enough RAM to comfortably contain your workload, and _don't_ count on magically quick virtual memory. After that, buy enough SSD to populate both NAND slots for faster I/O performance. These machines - 13" MacBook Pro and Air - are not for heavy creator workloads - they're targeted at Harry in accounting or Tim in legal or Sally the student - they're designed as lightweight computers for normal computer users: office apps, web surfing, the applications that you normally find in offices, with enough oomph to satisfy Harry or Tim or Sally's aspirational goals like light photo or video editing _without_ breaking the bank. Unlike when MacBooks were running on Intel, you _don't_ have to buy waaayy up in the lineup to get that aspirational power - which will save the normal computer user lots of cash. For normal office users these computers will accomplish just about any task they normally do - and do it quietly (without fans blaring) with great battery life, great portability, and snappy performance. For creators and those who run sustained or heavily multithreaded workloads, there's always the heavier duty MacBook Pros which blow away their older Intel counterparts at about the same price. My 32 GPU core M1 Max 16" MacBook Pro runs workloads my 2019 16" couldn't _think_ of accomplishing and does it quietly with great battery life, a gorgeous XDR display, and nice webcam and great audio. The quality of life improvements are astounding considering there's only two years difference between the two. No longer do I have to haul around a backpack with dongles and a power brick - these new Apple Silicon Macs will pretty much run all day without having to be plugged in due to their increased efficiency. Now I just carry around my MacBook in a leather sleeve because the thermal envelope of these machines is so much more reasonable - you escape the energy trap of pushing up clocks to get enough performance (exponentially increasing heat) and furiously running fans to cool them down and keep 'em from burning up.
As a college student, that is the reason I have the MacBook Air m2. I just needed a simple daily drive laptop that did what it needed to very well. I also liked the updated look
Always wondering, as a college student how were you able to afford it? Parents? Credit ? Students should buy the refurb M1 air I believe unless they have generous parents
This is kind of how I see it also. The Air is like getting a Toyota Camry. It gets you around to where you need to go and takes care of what most people do day to day with out any fuss. Then there are those that want to point out that it doesnt tow things very well. Yeah they make a truck for that. haha. Need to do "work" pick up the Pro model.
If they released an M-# version of 12inch MacBook,it would be unreasonably happy. I’d probably seriously consider getting it as support machine to my M1 Pro Macbook pro.
I’m still loving my M1 512GB air. In my opinion it is the perfect computer. I’m still floored by the battery life. It Is just a joy to use and has given me zero issues so far.
4:43 Agree, I always wished they name the current MacBook Air as just MacBook, because it is not as feather light like the 12” MacBook, and the MacBook regular people are most likely to buy And name the 12” MacBook as MacBook Air, and price it higher for that air like lighter weight portability. And even invest in even lighter technology like Titanium frame
I am the average adult that really only uses my computer for my grad school work and even then I use my iPad Pro for everything short of serious writing. I bought the 14 inch MBP last year and love it. If I hadn’t though, I would seriously consider the m2 MBA.
Off on a tangent, but running Stage Manager on Ventura beta, and I love this! A significant improvement and I have to say Apple has nailed it yet again with this new UI.
Great analysis - Too many reviewers were wowed by the design ("It's pretty!) or over-embellished the SSD/heat issue (Skip this one!). But Apple's pricing muddied the waters for making the M2 MBA a "no-brainer". You can go cheaper with the M1 MBA or more performant with 14" MBP this time around. My analysis is the new MBA is an excellent "next-gen" for Apple but not the best choice for many. By the way, they'll sell a ton of them.
$1000 value = M1 MBA $1200 new shiny thing, like the new look and features = M2 MBA $1400-$1600 portability/style/weight = M2 MBA 16/512GB, 8/512GB, 16/256GB $1999 speed = MBP14 Not difficult to figure out. Clear cost delineation Pointless to take into account refurbish products ... you can also wait until M2 MBA comes out in refurbish models too ...
Best review I've seen yet. I've watched at least 24 hours worth of review videos, and came to the conclusion of: m2 midnight with 512gb and 16gb ram.. You really gave me a lot of comfort with the midnight color comment. And instead of benchmarks you actually compared it to real life tasks which was definitely more relevant to real life usecases.
With the student discount it is just over 400 dollars and and the 210 apple gift card. That’s what i bought better display all the ports and a way better display. I think battery life will suffer but from my MacBook 13 M1 it is only about 3 hours difference
Just checked out the midnight version it’s ok but nothing that wows. Still think the 120 hertz and mini led on 14 with all the other stuff just makes it a better proposition
The SSD performance issue is overblown. Unless you’re doing a lot of file copying it won’t matter much. And if you’re doing a lot of file IO then you probably need more storage anyway
The SLC buffer is good for about 50GB of a transfer before it hits the wall, and most of us on an MB Air will not be doing 50GB transfers in our daily routine. Apple may have dynamic SLC buffers and could, with a firmware update, increase the size, but I feel it is such a niche need that they will not bother. Of course, if you are doing large transfers daily, then a much larger drive is more productive; it will have a larger SLC buffer by design and extra performance as well as better longevity.
The 2017 12” MacBook was my favorite laptop I’ve ever had. I would do horrible things for them to make a modern, slim bezel version, maybe a 12.5” version. But honestly if they took that old design and threw an M1 in it and sold it for $700-800 I would buy it in a heartbeat
I returned the base model and got 512 GB model hurt my pocket a lot but I think it’ll be better for me in the long run because I’m going into college being an IT major I’ll probably have to download softwares and need space in the system even though I’m planning on using external SSD anyway if I need it.
Good video bro! I have the 14 inch MacBook Pro M1 Max and really love the mini-LED screen with the 120 hz refresh rate, but wish I would have went with the M1 Pro for the better battery life. However, the MacBook Air has been Apple's best selling Mac for quiet some time for a reason and is still the best performing/efficient laptop for the majority of people.
I know i was looking at the M2 air but the pricing here in Canada with the same spec of 16gb and 512 gb it is a 400 dollar price difference with student pricing and you get the 210 apple gift card instead of air pods here. It is only a 190 difference? So i went with the MacBook Pro 14 all the ports a very nice display and 2 monitor support Apple price bracketing at its finest lol 🤷♂️
@@dh3302 Mine was 2463 Canadian with student pricing so close to your Best Buy pricing. After a few days I’d using this oh yes it is well worth the extra 240 dollars over the M2 Air. From the display to the speakers are amazing. Enjoy your labtop too
That is funny. The old design that has been around for centuries is better than the new design, Air, yet the MB 13 pro design is not as good as the new design! Just shows it is all very subjective, and the overall consensus that the MB 13 Pro is a waste of space, maybe just the usual YT blurb for clicks?
@ZERO LIMITS what @andyH_England is saying is that not having a new design is the primary reason most tech TH-camrs (including this one) were giving for people to choose the M2 MB Air over the M2 MBP 13 as well as the the M1 MB Air (i.e., form over function), but this is the rare video in which one admits that “updated design” isn’t enough. I’d love to see @Tailosive Tech revisit M2 MB Air vs. M2 MBP 13 with equal specs in light of this updated information WITHOUT automatically jumping to the M1 MB Air or the M1 Pro 14”. In other words, which M2 machine is the better buy right now?
I bought the M2 Air 8 core, 10 core, 16 gig, 1 tb version. There is no way to do recordings or livestreaming with this machine. Just no way. The GPU overheats instantly and the fps drops and everything start to studder. In my world a 2500 dollar machine would be able to do a simple task like that, but no. I'm using an external harddrive for my recordings and shut everything down that might be eating up the GPU and still bad results. This computer is a base model computer any way you turn it. It's not ment for "big" workloads even if it can be specked out as one. This computer should only sell as a surf the web and e-mail computer because that's all it can do. Don't bother buying anything over the basemodel because the results aren't that much different. Apple only takes your money and gives nothing back and it pisses me off. It's not worth the pricetag for new design and a better webcam. That's what iPads are for.
It just needs time for updates and optimisations, the M2 is new and making use of the improvements and the extra power means that developers and Apple have to optimise for best results. However, in reality I would never recommend any pro work on a fanless design and the M1 Pro 14 would be my recommendation as not even Apple can beat physics. So even with time I doubt the Air would be a better choice than a MB Pro M1 Pro for your workload. Check out Max Tech and the XPS 13 Plus, that has even worse performance and you will see that ultrabooks like the Dell and Air are not meant for these workloads.
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, and I would suggest 80% of buyers are not high end users, but general users where all the problems identified will not be - but once again excellent review and honest
Random fun fact (since you showcased it): I actually did one of my final tests on that song WINGS with my new MacBook Pro 😎 I make it a habit to run possible final music through as many speaker variants as possible before release, so the fact that there's that much of a bass difference between the Air and the Pro even shocked me! The Air would have led me to believe the mix of the song was still off (when it wasn't). Interesting to see the sound difference from an applicable scenario that would hurt my output in my own stuff!
I am typing this on my 2020 12.9” iPad Pro w/Magic Keyboard, even though the 14” M1 pro MBP is right next to me (I keep touching the screen and getting frustrated when nothing happens). 😞 I think the problem for me is that considering my own creative workflows GREATLY benefit from the touchscreen and Apple Pencil and the ability to quickly switch to portrait view, and I really only need Mac OS at all for a very few specific use cases, and I’ve always actually preferred desktops to laptops. I’m still thinking maybe I should return the MBP for a Mac Studio or even a Mini because the truth is the iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard has replaced my intel 13” MBP, so the new machine I needed is really a replacement for my Mac mini. Had they released an M2 mini alongside the other M2 machines, I probably would’ve bought one. The ONLY reason I really only want to consider the “very latest” technology is that I’m getting burned with iPad OS 16 about to come out and making my top of the line 2020 model WAYYYYYY less future-proof than I ever could’ve imagined. Since I’ll be replacing my primary device (iPad Pro) when the m2 is released, I’m wondering whether I just need to return the 14” MBP and hold off to see whether I’ll actually still *need* a Mac at all when the new software landscape for iPad OS vs Ventura is revealed. We seem to be in the same boat.
Well ya truth be told is exactly what it is truth be told Your video makes so much sense I bought the m2 16 ram 512 drive 10 core gpu Ya did I over spend I think I did Why well after 12 years with my MacBook Pro I kinda decided to come out of my man cave and get with the times I realized that the pro model was well over what I really needed So I went with the m2 In hind site should have got the air m1 but just loved the new design and so decided to get that Only cues I could afford it Truth be told
I feel an ideal dream mac would be 12gb of ram standard, up from 8gb, no reason to actually have 8gb now Fanless design with an actual heat sync. At least in that scenario apple could at least get away with actually being able to sustain performance for a while longer just to give reviewers and that hard core budgeter something more to hold on to I'd love to see a 90hz display, or greater even though that'd probably would never exist, it'd be nice to see.
Something I'd wonder about is, if you're not using it as a *lap*top and it just remains on a desk, would it be worth getting a thermal pad to connect the heatsink to the chassis to help dissipate heat? I would figure the MacBook Air isn't designed for anything longer than a couple minutes of hard work, as capable of a device as it is.
i’ll say it once and twice and three times just to show you how simple you can describe the M2 MacBook. Simply take the word pro off of it and everyone can be happy with calling it the MacBook. With all the minimalistic upgrades including all the throttling. The name MacBook is absolutely perfect. And they also position themselves for the next MacBook to be Cole MacBook SE‘s‘s‘s. Sincerely the iPhone SE
My theory is that these are the last couple of models apple will be selling with 256gb, so they got rid of the 128gb SSDs, that may be the reason they kinda sacrificed the MacBook Air this year… either way, if I learnt something after buying the 2016 MacBook Pro, is… don’t buy the first iteration of a new design, wait for next year
I just got one as a secondary laptop and unfortunately the keyboard and mouse freezes every time it comes out of sleep. Even after doing a full wipe restore it didn't fix the problem and apple support couldn't figure it out either. It it needs to be replaced I might spend the extra 100 dollars for a pro. Since macs last a while it might be worth the extra money.
I just ordered my (almost) fully specced M2 Air and now you come out with this review? 😅 But honestly, I'm still happy with my choice. I have a 14" for work, which I love, but I find a bit too clunky and heavy for private use. I checked out the M2 Air in the store, and I too was surprised but how heavy it still is, but all in all I still find it much more portable. And even though the M1 is much better value, the wedge shape never really appealed to me, and I really like to new design. Still wish it wasn't so expensive though. 💸💸💸
@@sebastianlau4809 Yes, I did. Don't know if I really need it, but somehow binned processors feel to me like they're broken or something, I rather get the full deal, and you don't save that much money.
i think my workflow could be handled by the M2 and when I am traveling I like the size and finless design plus the battery life. Unfortunately I have 2 screens and that totally rules out the M1/M2 series :( I hope they overcome this limitation. I don't need 4 Pro Displays and a 4K TV but I'd like at least 2 displays
@@altosack I think that’s fair though my setup is not extreme it’s just 2 1080p screens. I think limiting any computer now a days to 1 screen is kinda unfortunate. Plus if they let the 13” do that but they’re both M1 than it would be a software lock 😕
The problems you had and described sound WAY more like software errors and not an issue with the hardware / M2 and its cooling... And the "problems" about the 256GB model are also (not your fault) only half backed as often when tech reviewers come up with some stuff they discovered. The lower speeds are only for sequential read and write. For random read and write - which is much more important - the M2 is still faster even with the 256GB base model. And for the time you do need those sequential speeds, the 1.5GB/s are still extremely good and much better than 99% of people had before the M2 MBA.
I feel like I’ve made up my mind: I want an M1 Pro 14-inch MacBook Pro to replace my 2015 Core i7 15-inch MacBook Pro. Thought about the M2 Air but this video sold me on avoiding it. But at this point in the year, should I just wait for the M2 Pro? My ‘15 MBP definitely has a lot of life left in it, and I could easily use it for another few months/ years. Just want to upgrade to the latest and greatest.
If your 15-inch MacBook Pro still can handle everything you want to do with it, then I guess you can wait with buying a new Mac. I wonder if we would see a M2 Pro this year, I would think it is more likely to come next year. Maybe that the iMac will get a M2 this year. Then again, I also thought that the M2 MacBook Air wouldn’t get released before October this year.
I would say if you buy an MB air M2 for intensive tasks, knowing it is fanless, then you have to give it help. Like with all my Intel Windows machines, I use a turbo-charged cooling stand to keep the machines from heating up. It works great. So, as ever, people have to use common sense; if they are using a machine not designed for the workloads, then a cooler (I also use a fan on my desktop to add extra cooling) is a simple solution. Though better still buy a Mac with a fan!
Although that GPU test is nonsense, testing a gaming benchmark is stupid on a fanless Mac, but the MB Air was designed for the 3nm, which has been delayed. The new chassis will have maybe 4 iterations, so although the M2 (ergo M1+) is a bit thermally challenged, the M3, M4 and M5 in this chassis will be fine. When Apple heard about the 3nm delay, it would be ridiculous to expect them to spend a few more billion redesigning the new Air chassis for just one chip, so some common sense needs to be applied in these COVID times of delay and component shortages!
The price is high, The base model is scam, The cooling fan is most definitely needed, The Notch on on a laptop is and will always be garbage, And the touchbar is missed. L laptop! "but hey it has magsafe!!!"
“10c often throttle more than 8c” ONE TH-camr had that result in ONE benchmark. Not even Max Tech could find such a result and you know they would make a big thing out of it.
What is stupid is that obviously, 10-core is much better than 7-core (that is all the M1 Air now ships with) or 8-core M2 Air, base model; is that very few of us will need all the 10-cores at full-throttle on one app. Multi-core is about GPU cores being used in different processes, and if you are multitasking, having 10-cores means we can maximise the number whilst keeping the frequency down compared to 7-cores. So, for example, if you are running Chrome with GPU rasterization whilst running a second display, with several cores running a render (aided by the media engine) and maybe a YT video on the main display, the more cores, the merrier, and they will run cooler than 7-cores at full-throttle handling the same load.
@@andyH_England Each core may run cooler (in situations where your software isn't always using 100% like an intense render), but since there are more cores, the heat will be about the same anyway.
@@andyH_England Perhaps not. I'm not an expert either but from what I understand more cores generally equals more heat. Will need more testing to know for certain.
they should have discontinued the M1 MacBook Air and then started selling the M2 Air at $999, clean and simple. But this price structure where the M2 Air pushes people towards the 14-inch Pro will probably make Wall Street happy
question if it hasn't already been asked sorry if it has. when you do the live stream and screen record at the same time on a m1 air does it overheat as well or does it perform as expected ?
I have come to a belief that if you know that 256GB ssd and 8GB of ram is a definite no go, save some more and get the M1 Pro 14 inch. Any upgrade to the M2 Air seems to bring you close to the M1 Pro 14
You need thermal pad mod + semiconductor Peltier laptop cooler to mitigate heat issue while handling that kind of intensive work load while able to skip M1 Pro/Max SoCs. - Advice for third world country pro creatives who are on a budget and the real pro machines are just too expensive.
Where are you going to transfer all those files to\from? Probably external storage which in most cases will be the speed bottleneck, not the internal SSD.
Getting a little tired of these reviews. 90% of users do very basic things on their laptops. Even when using for work all day - super basic. If you need to do more intense tasks and do them often - that's literally what the Pros are for. I think there are a ton of people out there buying the Pro that have no true need. I prefer the design and day to day use of the new Air. If offered both at the same price - I'd actually choose the Air. Literally the only thing in the Pro that I like better is the better screen with darker blacks, and the slightly smaller bezels. All the rest is BS... emails, web browsing, excel files, blah blah blah... will not make a difference at all. But for me, even the 14" pro is too large and too heavy.
I think this computer is an excellent option for students, business professionals, and many more. Is it substantially better than the M1? Maybe not. But the M1 Pro/Max machines are overkill for many.
I would never recommend the M1 over the M2; in tech, you go forwards, not backwards, and what may seem reasonable now may be dumb in a year. For example, last year, all YT creators en masse decided the 2020 iPad Pro was better than the M1 iPad Pro due to saving $200. In retrospect, that was an awful recommendation, and it sucks for those that listened to that. I think that once macOS Ventura arrives, the M2 gets macOS optimisation, and apps are updated; it will get further away from the MB Air M1. Just check out ArtisRight, where he shows the M1 Air is left trailing if you do some regular intensive tasks.
@@andyH_England by this logic, by the time the M3 becomes available, you should move forward and jump on it, which would be wasteful for mot people... to each, their own I guess, but the M1 is the better choice for most people. It's still one of the fastest computers you can get for the money, been using one for the past six months and the difference between it and the M2 are none for the average user
@@ChrisCanadianHusky I cannot disagree; for most Air users, the extra performance is not life-defining, and the real M2 will be revealed when it is in the MB Pro 14/16 and Mac mini/Studio. So, we have a good choice, and IMHO, Apple did really well by keeping the MB Air M1 and should be applauded for not forcing the inflation on those that want to upgrade from old Intel Macs. The M1 now means those hating on the price rises of the M2 are barking up the wrong tree, as Apple has provided for those with lower budgets.
@@andyH_England those are just software restrictions based on pushing you to the newest model. There is no hardware limitation for the iPad Pro with A12Z to run shitty iPadOS “pro features” because that damn chip moved macOS with the Mac mini transition kit. Don’t support this anti consumer practices, “old” devices are perfectly capable just are software restricted to make new models more appealing.
Its heavier than most of the LG Gram range, which are made for intel x86 chips! The 15.6" Gram from like 2018 is lighter than this. It has more key travel, more ports than the M1 range of Macbook Pros, and a MIL standard drop test certified chassis. That just puts Apple's "innovation" into some perspective doesn't it....
Does anyone know if a brand new M1 MBA has the nerfed SSD setup of the new M2 chassis’s? Would I be better off just getting a refurbished M1 Air so I know I’m getting the best hardware available?
Help me out here, M1 MBA would be fine for me, don’t need the new M2 one. BUT: Here, the M1 MBP is only €80 more than the M1 MBA. Is it worth getting the Pro in this case?
As an MB Pro 13 activist, I would say that it is def a better choice. The main reasons are 10-20% better battery life, the TouchBar, better thermals aided by the fan, better studio mics, 100 nits more brightness and subjectively a classic design.
I would still go for the Air, but that’s mainly because I think the function keys would suite my workflow better than the touchbar (I never tried a MacBook with a touchbar so perhaps I’m completely wrong about that). I also would choose the Air because it is slightly lighter and thinner and that would be a plus for me when I would carry it around in a backpack. The Air does thermal throttle earlier than the pro meaning that heavy operations that take some time to complete (like exporting a video) will take longer than on the pro.
I prefer to make my TH-cam content on iPhone. It's so much easier and efficient - especially for sharing ddirect to social media. I don't see myself buying a macbook because they suck for PC gaming.
Here's the short version of the video: It's new, it's kind of cool! It's not worth it unless you have 1500$+tax And It be better to just get the m1 air or if you spend more than 1500, just get the MacBook pro
Why do you hate Apple? You should be defending their niche marketing and their refusal to put in a heating or fan. Not that the fan itself matters because it didn’t matter in the 2020 MBA.
Yes, I always flinch when so-called experts recommend upgrading the 512GB over 16GB of RAM, as why would you just want faster swap, when you can get 50X faster RAM? Max Tech and quite a few channels are sadly giving out poor information.
Now that the dust has settled a bit, the mba is kinda right where it belongs. Its true and most ppl have forgotten that the mba line has always struggled with heat and performance, because physics. Its just that the m1 mba did such a great job at its price point that we want that same over deliverance in this gen. But as the m2 chip has shown, thats not truly realistic. If we we want power, the mbp 13/14/16 are the answer. Now I really wish the 12in macbook had been the first m1 powered device because I think the thermals were perfect for that device. A device with a lot of power but minimal heat output, but in a form factor so light and entry user friendly. The minute you move into mba/13in mbp, weight and power are a bigger factor and moves the convo into a different direction. Im starting to really like the m2 mbp not for its “value” but that it really can highlight the performance of the m2 chip without much loss in performance. The only issue is the outdated design and absurd price point for an arguably worse product. If apple intends to keep the 13inch pro around, it either needs a redesign chassis or change the 14/16 pros into a new name above pro. Just to keep the differences clear to normal consumers. Idk call them macbook maxes or macbook “xtreme”.
Apple is holding back the redesign of the MB Pro 13 for a showcase of the M3 as they have no other new designs to market. This is sensible road mapping that many YT influencers seemingly fail to understand. A new event with a new MB and the new 3nm is a marketing dream and very much a better prospect than just showing the new 3nm. That means that the MB Pro 13 got little love this cycle, but I did buy one, and I still prefer it over the new MB Air due to the fan, battery life, TouchBar (use all the time) and sturdiness.
Just watch Max Tech's MB Air -v- XPS 13 Plus, where the Air thrashes the Dell in every metric. If the MB Air M2 was Apple taking the eye off the ball, then Dell did not even turn up for the match! The M2 in the right config is a lot better than the M1 Air for some tasks, including video editing due to the new media engines. Seems like some updates are due soon for further optimisations so I expect the M2 to get better and better and maybe a bad mistake to buy M1 Air instead?
The M2 Macs have fallen to the problems of Apple's pricing ladder strategy where the "mid-tier" option is often the one that is hard to recommend because of how much value the entry level Mac (M1 MBA) and the Pro-level Mac (M1 Pro MBP).
Only took 4 months. Got mine for $200 off on sale at Best Buy. I only wish it has 16gb of memory but 8gb will do.
Yeah I have been very happy with my MacBook Pro m1 16GB 256GB and serves all my basic needs too well. I hope this serves me for another 8 years.

I’m still loving my M1 512GB air. In my opinion it is the perfect computer. I’m still floored by the battery life. It Is just a joy to use and has given me zero issues so far.

Agree, I always wished they name the current MacBook Air as just MacBook, because it is not as feather light like the 12” MacBook, and the MacBook regular people are most likely to buy
And name the 12” MacBook as MacBook Air, and price it higher for that air like lighter weight portability. And even invest in even lighter technology like Titanium frame
I purchased the base model MacBook Air M2 over the M1 because I love the way it looks to be honest lol
I am the average adult that really only uses my computer for my grad school work and even then I use my iPad Pro for everything short of serious writing. I bought the 14 inch MBP last year and love it. If I hadn’t though, I would seriously consider the m2 MBA.
Just ordered mine. Midnight 8 core , 256 ssd, 24 gb ram. ( I have an external ssd drive) going to love working on my Unity project with it to go
this is not the first review we have seen.... but this is the ONLY review we care about.
Amazing that the Macbook Air debuted 14 years ago in 2008. That thing still amazes me how thin and capable it was even today.
Off on a tangent, but running Stage Manager on Ventura beta, and I love this! A significant improvement and I have to say Apple has nailed it yet again with this new UI.
I feel the exact opposite way about stage manager and swiping between desktops is always gonna be the way for me 🤣
Thanks for the heads up about your issues with OBS, that's a major problem with the M2 Air that no one else had reported yet
I’d love to see Drew do a typing test to find out his WPM while utilizing only his thumbs on the 12 inch MacBook.
$1000 value = M1 MBA
$1200 new shiny thing, like the new look and features = M2 MBA
$1400-$1600 portability/style/weight = M2 MBA 16/512GB, 8/512GB, 16/256GB
$1999 speed = MBP14
Not difficult to figure out.
Clear cost delineation
Pointless to take into account refurbish products ... you can also wait until M2 MBA comes out in refurbish models too ...
I don’t have a MacBook and I don’t plan on buying one at this time but everything he said is good in keep in mind.
totally with your sentiments. I wanted an M@ Air until I saw the price for a 16/512. Typing this on a new base 14" Pro
I would love the M1 Pro 14" MBP. I don't need it however. So, I keep my M1 MBA. Sometimes I hate it when my frugal/sensible side takes over. 😁
Even if I speced up to 16ram and 512gb, the difference btw 14 pro and m2air is about 600 in Canada.
For small files, IOPS (Input-Output Operations Per Second) is much more important than transfer speeds, and the 256GB is about the same as the 512GB.
@@kennordsfan1494 Exactly. Best Buy currently has that same 14 inch M1 Pro MacBook on sale for $1,749 here in the states.

Happy to see the FIRST youtuber being honest about the redesign... The wedge design is way better than this boxy redesign !!
That is funny. The old design that has been around for centuries is better than the new design, Air, yet the MB 13 pro design is not as good as the new design! Just shows it is all very subjective, and the overall consensus that the MB 13 Pro is a waste of space, maybe just the usual YT blurb for clicks?
@@andyH_England The MBP 13 does NOT have a "wedge" design my frnd !
@@krazyyyduniya Indeed, I am talking about perceptions rather than details.
Do you think we’ll see them bring apple silicon to the older 12 inch MacBook model?
Would love to get something like that
Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, and I would suggest 80% of buyers are not high end users, but general users where all the problems identified will not be - but once again excellent review and honest
No one should rely on laptop speakers to master music production.
@@joefilter2923 I don’t use it for mastering, I use it as a test product to see how the final track will sound

I already have an Ipad Pro 11 inch 2020, do I need a macbook air? Or do I bite the bullet and buy the macbook pro’s?

I feel an ideal dream mac would be
12gb of ram standard, up from 8gb, no reason to actually have 8gb now
Fanless design with an actual heat sync. At least in that scenario apple could at least get away with actually being able to sustain performance for a while longer just to give reviewers and that hard core budgeter something more to hold on to
I'd love to see a 90hz display, or greater even though that'd probably would never exist, it'd be nice to see.
Just asking did you go for the 10 GPU cores? That's the only decision I can't make up my mind about right now.
I think one external display for the MacBook Air is acceptable, but the 13” MacBook Pro (M1 or M2) should be able to handle two.
@@altosack I think that’s fair though my setup is not extreme it’s just 2 1080p screens. I think limiting any computer now a days to 1 screen is kinda unfortunate. Plus if they let the 13” do that but they’re both M1 than it would be a software lock 😕
I’m still using my MacBook Air from 2017 and I’ll only get a new one when it stops getting the latest software
DREW: 🙋♀ How do you compare the DISPLAY on the AIR to the 16 INCH m1 PRO DISPLAY ⁉
Always with the real reviews TT.
13:51 Nice, you used one of Randy’s songs!
Where are the skits? Please bring them back! Pleeeeease.
Personally, I think I would still go for the m1. But this is cool
@@zach-shea Maybe, though I thought that it was not a linear relationship when you reduce frequency? But I could be wrong!
@@andyH_England Perhaps not. I'm not an expert either but from what I understand more cores generally equals more heat. Will need more testing to know for certain.
@@zach-shea Yes, def would be interesting to know!
they should have discontinued the M1 MacBook Air and then started selling the M2 Air at $999, clean and simple. But this price structure where the M2 Air pushes people towards the 14-inch Pro will probably make Wall Street happy
Do you suppose OBS needs to be optimized for the chipset?
question if it hasn't already been asked sorry if it has. when you do the live stream and screen record at the same time on a m1 air does it overheat as well or does it perform as expected ?
I have come to a belief that if you know that 256GB ssd and 8GB of ram is a definite no go, save some more and get the M1 Pro 14 inch. Any upgrade to the M2 Air seems to bring you close to the M1 Pro 14
If you speck out the air to 512,16,10 core at 1699. Just get the Pro 14 only 50 more at BestBuy. Will have no problems handling any of this.
Hi 👋 may I know what camera you used for film this video looks so good 🤗
iPhone 13 Pro
Shut up Mikey. The air is hot(bad thermals)garbage

I think this computer is an excellent option for students, business professionals, and many more. Is it substantially better than the M1? Maybe not. But the M1 Pro/Max machines are overkill for many.
I still think M1 MBA is fine for most and absolutely worth the cost savings
I hate fan noise. That is my main reason to prefer MacBook Air over MacBook Pro
The Air does thermal throttle earlier than the pro meaning that heavy operations that take some time to complete (like exporting a video) will take longer than on the pro.
ya ur better off spending that money on more ram for a m1 air. and even buying a dongle fr 5 monitor support.

I don't see myself buying a macbook because they suck for PC gaming.
Did you get your 1TB iPhone in the end bro?
yeah I think Apple should do 12" like Microsoft doing with their laptop go
no skid?!? they are entertaining
I can't explain it in a different way but the m2 MacBook air is basically the MacBook air pro
2:42 🍔🍟🖐🏻😂🤣
Here's the short version of the video: It's new, it's kind of cool!
It's not worth it unless you have 1500$+tax
And It be better to just get the m1 air or if you spend more than 1500, just get the MacBook pro
Nope lol
@@TailosiveTech hi drew. sorry for super chatting in your livestream.
@Tailosive Tech I'm sorry but 12:42-15:00 is what I'm referring to as well as 9:34-9:54
If people are so bothered by fingerprints they should just get a skin for it.
Imo upgrade to 512gb and MAYBE 16gb ram and then stop. Any more you’re in MacBook Pro territory
This is for the ppl who are in the $1000-$1500 price range. M1 mba for sub 1000
i have both a 16gb and 8 gb, the 16gb is 10C cooler, swapping makes this cpu a bit hotter (both run W11 fast for my use case)
I appreciate whoever accepts that marques is dum for not uploading in 60fps
This is my first video from this channel and I'm definitely impressed with this review. Subbed!
Welcome aboard!
A notch is not modern looking. It's a flaw. Especially with pro and now this. It only house a freakin webcam for that much space. Screw apple.
Yea the M1 Air is better than the M2 unfortunately. Apple dropped the ball on the M2 products (Air and Pro)
Seems like some updates are due soon for further optimisations so I expect the M2 to get better and better and maybe a bad mistake to buy M1 Air instead?
my 7 yr old pc can handle that video file call thing. jebuz
ok oily boy
