This is NOT a review… but this is the most fun I've had shooting a video in a while, camera overheating, coughing and all 😂 Expect more in-depth stuff soon! Higher quality content does take more time :D
I was hoping for some typical student apps, like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, R, SPSS, Zoom and Teams. I'd love to see how the processor and battery hold up to hours long multitasking with these apps. But yet here again we get the photo and video editing tests all other TH-camrs already do. Only interesting if you belong to the 0,5% of students who actually study graphical arts.
I don't know why theythink I'd buy an air to render an damn 8k video🤣. Air are for people who don't want to carry there heavy pros around to do light task
If you are a student that does light coding, video editing, study with ebooks, powerpoints, recorded lessons and zooms calls. I would recommend buying the base m2 air with a samsung t7 SSD
I think what Apple got right is the new design. I graduated last year and have no need to upgrade my current 2019 i5 Mac, but the new designs makes you want it.
Definitely needed a students perspective! Still kind of indecisive on the M1 or M2. M2 for design purposes, and M1 is just still a great laptop. Upgrading from a MacBook Pro 2011 so either one will be a vast difference😅Hope you get better soon! Can’t wait for your full review!
m1 air is such a good laptop, m2 air if you care about the extra features and the extra money that you pay for it, but the m1 air is still an amazing laptop imo
Depends on your budget. If you like a slightly better screen, MagSafe and a new form factor go for the m2. But the m1 has the best bang for your buck even in apple refurbished store they go low as $850 for the base model. If you’re set on the m2 perhaps you can wait for a refurbished model they might sell it for just over $1000
I like that the M1 MacBook Air takes a USB-C cord so I can use the cable with other electronics. The "MacBook Air" title is missing from the monitor. The M2 is faster, but unless you are using demanding software, then the M2 isn't really worth it.
I think the MacBook air m2 would be an obvious go-to if they hadn't screwed with a single nand chip in the base model. According to some reviews, while multitasking, that model sometimes underperforms the m1 base model, which is outrageous. Since I'll do some heavy coding tasks, it'll definitely have some impact.
Apperantly it over heats as well. I’m not sure how task intensive coding is but I’m assuming it would be a lot. I ordered the 16/512 model just to run some light accounting software and use Microsoft word, excel and have 5-12 tabs open at the same time and I’m nervous about it over heating for those simple tasks.
@@AS-bq7sc I think if you were anyways going with 16/512 model, then Macbook pro m2 might have been better for you (given that you don't mind spending 100$ extra and having an old chassis). The fan definitely helps with the thermal throttling issue.

Thank you sm for this vid, new sub. BTW this is going to be my first McBook that im going to have in my life and im so excited for it.
Which MacBook Air would you suggest for me. I am an incoming college freshman who will be mostly only be using my laptop for schoolwork, writing papers, zoom calls, and some streaming. (No intensive video editing or gaming) Which would you prefer (M1 or M2) and with how much ram? I’m hoping for this laptop to last me throughout college so 4 years.
M2 Air 15 inch vs M1 Pro 14 inch for a college student? Because after the necessary upgrades, the M2 Air costs 1700ish$ My uses: - College tasks - Editing as a hobby (4K/8K photos and videos - ProRes HDR) - Playing Minecraft - Battery life - Media consumption I’m confused because the M2 Air has better battery, but the M1 Pro has better display and performance
Really love the video. Coming into college, I'm leaning towards this device. I have a question still - given I am editing a video in 4k, how long of a project do you think would the macbook air be able to sustain consistent speeds before the CPU or GPU throttles? (I do not plan on editing anything over 10 minutes long)
You can edit comfortably without throttle. It can sustain continuous loads for over 5-7 mins (which is more), if given, if all CPU and GPU cores get fired up on rendering or exporting the video. Well, while editing videos, it won't throttle at all, kinda.
I used M1 Air at school for netbean java coding through Rosetta 2, and still barely feel warm on surface, while my friend with 16" intel MacBook Pro doing the same thing and it's already toasting
I’d like to see a comparison video between the base model M1 pro (14 inch) and M2 MacBook Air (with same RAM and Storage) from a developer’s perspective
Will blow this away. Have had 14 since November. If your looking at a 14, then just spend the bit more for a 14. An air will throttle under multitasking loads.
I have a MacBook 12imch 2017. It died out yesterday and although I bought a Mac mini as a home pc, a laptop is essential for me as a uni student but I’m still undecided about which one to get after dropping 499 on the Mac mini 3 months ago 💀
Do you think this computer will last me about 4 years or more with only 256 gb for college? I’ll only be using it for online lectures, writing, studying, research, etc and watching TH-cam videos.
Possibly. If you utilize the cloud heavily and don’t save too many documents it should last for a bit but 512 GB will give you much more headroom. Not to mention the base storage is up to 50% slower because one 256GB NAND stick was used.
Still not sure if I should go with this or the macbook pro 14 inch. I dont really need the extra power but its only 134 dollars more in my country for the Pro.
Would this laptop still be a good idea in 5-10 years time? Or would it be a better idea to invest in a MacBook Pro 14” should I want it to be a long term laptop?
I’m in the same dilemma. I’m leaning more towards the m1 pro 14” baseline model. The reason being is because for my use, I would like to have at least 512 gb on the computer. And that comes standard with the m1 pro, whereas it costs extra on the air. Also, a thing that increases the lifespan of a computer is the ram. When time goes on, applications become more demanding, and more ram helps the computer keep up. So in my case If I were to buy the m2 air, I would need to spend extra on the storage and ram. On the 14 m1 pro you get 16 gb ram and 512 storage right of the bat. If you apply these two on the m2 air, it becomes quite expensive, and you wouldn’t need to spend that much more to just get the m1 pro. And that’s not talking about the way better performance of the m1 pro chip vs m2, m1 pro 14” has superior display, speakers and a bunch of other things. But if there’s something I overlooked on the m2 air, that makes it a better choice, please let me know because I am still a little unsure about what model to get
@Ibrahim Khan get the 14. yeah sure you'd have more power than you probably need if you were just using it for light purposes but down the line the extra ram would be extremely useful if you plan on using it for the long run. I went with the m1 and havent looked back. besides you have the sd card slot back also lol
I'm a college student also (business major) usually im just on productivity apps and web browsing. I'm torn between getting the 8/512 or 16/256. What are your thoughts? ps. Couldn't afford 16/512 😭 (just too much for an incoming sophomore student)
@@cart_of_coupsabby2525 Finally decided, im getting 16/256 tho. After watching tons of M2 Macbook Air review, I realized 16/256 is the best decision bc you can expand your storage (external drives/cloud) but u cant expand the ram later on. Also, with 16gb ram swapping is avoided i guess. But still its up to you nd your usage.

How is typing on it compared to the wedge shaped M1 MacBook Air? Do you find your Palms/wrists digging into the squared edges? Apologies if you've covered this in the video, I just wanted to get this thought down before I forgot it!
If you had to get one. The M2 Macbook Air or the iPad Pro 11" for college. Which one would you choose? Is there value in getting both a tablet and a computer?
Laptop is a necessity while an iPad is a luxury. I’m an engineering student and I think that having both is optimal but having just a laptop is necessary to get through college these days.
I know this sounds pretentious and all....but when comparing weight use the same hand bro... You'll be surprised how many times we make wrong assumptions weighting them side by side.
I’m gonna be a Comp Sci major this fall and I’m trying to decide between the M1 Pro MBP 14 or the M2 Air. Is it worth getting the MBP 14 or can I get by with an Air. P.S. I’m not considering the MBP 13 just cause of the old design and specs.
Get the MBP 14 if you want to future proof along with 16gb of ram because it's such a quality of life improvement depending on the kind of development you're going to be doing.
14" is like a luxury car compared to your run of the mill toyota (MB air). It has so many nice to haves for daily use, doesn't get hot, speed seems practically unlimited, screen refresh, ports, 1000 nits daily use (use vivd, mind blowing experience) and fast charging
If you have money then 14 inch mbp is much better. Make sure you buy the laptop using an education discount that saves 150 bucks and gives you free airpods. M2 air is no match for M1 pro.
Thinking about getting the 512ssd 8gb because I can't find the 16gb one would that be good choice for school? Everyone recommends 16gb but price gap and harder to find :(
Depends on your workload. If you're not doing heavy loads like video exporting, running large code files, or running other heavy applications, 8gb will likely be okay. If you're just writing papers, having chrome tabs, and using it as a glorified notebook, you'll be a-ok with 8gb That being said 16gb is much more future proof. I also think if you're in engineering of any sort that requires heavy workload, you go 16gb.
Hi I had two questions, how much do you have to push it until the keyboard area heats up? Secondly I am a student too and I like to have a lot of tabs open and applications open so I can work on a lot of things instantly when I want to, I occasionally edit some videos on Final Cut Pro as well, so how bad would the heating of the MacBook Air body be with this use?
Is it really gonna heat up that much with such normal day to day usage? I mean other than that, the m2 air with the upgraded specs is actually very good in my opinion.
Hi, sorry if I am late. But I think it’s better that you go for an M1 Pro, it comes with 512gb ssd and 16gb ram included, has 120hz, better display and faster speed. So since you’re doing video editing, go for M1 Pro.
It’ll depend on what you mainly do! With basic student tasks being done and no heavy editing the 8gb ram will be just fine for you but if you’re needing that extra 8 gigs for video editing and heavier tasks for the future then I’d go for it. :) I myself plan on getting the 8gb ram ver.

I know this sounds pretentious and all....but when comparing weight use the same hand bro... You'll be surprised how many times we make wrong assumptions weighting them side by side.
Very fair sir. BUT, this laptop is lighter, and the weight is more evenly distributed so easier to hold :)

God I wish I had an M2 Air when I was in college
10:56 you kinda felt like jesse pinkman
Thinking about getting the 512ssd 8gb because I can't find the 16gb one would that be good choice for school? Everyone recommends 16gb but price gap and harder to find :(
Depends on your workload. If you're not doing heavy loads like video exporting, running large code files, or running other heavy applications, 8gb will likely be okay. If you're just writing papers, having chrome tabs, and using it as a glorified notebook, you'll be a-ok with 8gb
That being said 16gb is much more future proof. I also think if you're in engineering of any sort that requires heavy workload, you go 16gb.
would you recommend the m2 macbook air for someone who is going to use Word and Excel?
Hi I had two questions,
how much do you have to push it until the keyboard area heats up?
Secondly I am a student too and I like to have a lot of tabs open and applications open so I can work on a lot of things instantly when I want to, I occasionally edit some videos on Final Cut Pro as well, so how bad would the heating of the MacBook Air body be with this use?
I've seen in multiple videos that it does heat up pretty fast because there is no fan in the macbook air m2
The only cooling is some graphite pad so there is not much cooling going on. No heat sink ...
Is it really gonna heat up that much with such normal day to day usage? I mean other than that, the m2 air with the upgraded specs is actually very good in my opinion.
Hi,
sorry if I am late.
But I think it’s better that you go for an M1 Pro, it comes with 512gb ssd and 16gb ram included, has 120hz, better display and faster speed.
So since you’re doing video editing, go for M1 Pro.
hi! is this the 8 gb RAM version or the 16 gb RAM? planning to buy soon but i’m torn between 8/516 or 16/516
It’ll depend on what you mainly do! With basic student tasks being done and no heavy editing the 8gb ram will be just fine for you but if you’re needing that extra 8 gigs for video editing and heavier tasks for the future then I’d go for it. :) I myself plan on getting the 8gb ram ver.
@@shoppin4blood thanks! i’m getting the 8gb now also. i don’t think the extra 8gb would be necessary. when are you planning to get yours?
the minecraft test is all deserving for a like
