  • Complete Routine of Shaolin Ba Duan Jin 八段锦 recorded at the WeekEnd-Retreat in February 2019 at the Shaolin Temple Europe 歐洲少林寺 located in Otterberg / Kaiserslautern in Germany.
Shaolin Ba Duan Jin can be translated as 8 Brocade (Valuable) Exercises. It is a short and easy to remember routine, suitable also for laypeople that don't have the possibility or capability to practice throughout the complete day.
It consists of 8 exercises aiming in the development of strong and flexible muscles and tendons:
    Ba Duan Jin Posture Names:
    Opening · 00:00
    1) Supporting the Heaven (Vertical Stretch) · 01:10
    2) Drawing the Arrow (Horizontal Stretch) · 02:15
    3) Separating Heaven and Earth (Diagonal Stretch) · 04:25
    4) Wise Owl Gazing Back (Torsional Stretch) · 06:10
    5) Big Bear Turns to Side (Leg-Torso Connection) · 07:55
    6) Bending backwards and touching toes (Front / Back Stretch) · 10:25
    7) Clenching the Fists (Mobilisation) · 11:40
    8) Clicking Heels 7 Times (Release) · 14:50
    Closing · 16:00
It belongs to the classic repertoire of Qi Gong exercises in the Shaolin Arts around the globe. Together with the Muscle and Tendon Transformation (Yi Jin Jing) and the meditative circular movements (Chan Yuan Gong) it gives a strong foundation to complete all martial exercises.
Every year there are several retreats that are taking place in the Shaolin Temple Europe 歐洲少林寺, the monastery where I am living.
A retreat can either be a 3-day Retreat (Friday - Sunday) or a 6-day Retreat (Monday - Saturday). Every retreat is held under a specific topic, such as: Gong Fu, Qi Gong (e.g. Ba Duan Jin, Yi Jin Jing, 13 Luohan), Meditation retreats and Rou Quan retreats.
If you are interested in joining any of these retreats, please take a look at all dates that are published on the website of the monastery:

I am a life long martial artist since age 6. The past 10 years I have been plagued with Arthritis in my left hip. I have been practicing Ba Duan Jin and Yi Jin Jing about 5-6 days per week. and have enormous improvement in my leg. I am very grateful for your wonderful teachings which are helping me to heal. It is the horse stance that is literally burning the disease right out of my hip. I am sincerely grateful to you, and I respectfully bow.

you may not believe this, but even I started practicing martial arts (Kyokushin) at 6. then I became a couch potato and had been sitting in front of screens for the past 10 years, and developed a weak left leg (weak hip) and a stressed and tight right hip. Had been doing basic forms of tai chi for a week and felt that I made a connection with the internal movements / intent of kyokushin (moving specific muscle groups in the forms with proper pressure on proper joints) and have found it really working.
P.S: also bought a kick scooter. helps with the leg stretching.

I`ve been struggeling for almost a year with depression, suicide
thoughts and anxiety because of personal issues. I thought i would not
find anything that could help me to overcome my problems without using
any kind of medicin or so, because of the side effects. Until i searched
for Thai Chi and Qi Gong that could help me. I watched many videos until i
saw yours. It`s my third day practising by following your program here
on youtube, and it`s very deliberating. I practise two times a day, at sunrise and at
sun down. Since it is my first time practising, it`s difficult for me to breath proper at
the same time as i make the movements. So to learn it proper, i`ve been
practising the movements first. Then i followed your video where you
learn guided breathing. Until now since i started i can fineally get to
sleep a whole night. So thank you very much master Shi Heng Yi for sharing this :)

But qigong is das secret to a long or short and healthy life.
When I practice Shaolin Congfu slowly,

I know the point of these practices isn't to look good but just wanted to comment that not only is your form gorgeous, but you have a movement quality that reminds me of very well done ballet (of which I've seen quite a lot). I began to do the 8 Brocade every morning, after my qi qong and tai chi. I started in March to see if it would help me get out of a serious low point in my life by distracting me with more exercise. It has been the reason for my improved focus on now; has healed my right shoulder so the pain when I move it is quite minimal; has built muscle and will power. Thank-you for your gift.
