The Trans Ams in the movie were 1976 models , Pontiac provided 1977 front clips and the snowflake wheels, in some shots you can see cars with the 76 honeycomb wheels
The main car was also outfitted with a modified Chevy 350 engine pushing out much higher Hp then the stock 400
The W72 version of the 400 ( identified on the shaker with the “TA 6.6 “call out vs the stock 400 callout “6.6 liter”. ) actually produced more then 200 hp, for insurance and EPA regulations they reported 220hp, NHRA dump tested the W72 at 265 hp and 325 foot lbs of torque. This engine was a performance option along with the WS6 suspension package featuring bigger sway bars and suspension.

the main car had the base 185hp 6.6 400 Pontiac, you can tell it wasnt the WS6 (not available until '77) as it had the skinny tires compared to the 8 inch wheels or the W72 package which also wasnt available until 1977! The only one that used a modified 350 was the jump car (estimated 400hp), the stock motor didnt have enough grunt! I was lucky enough to see a lot of the filming as I was living in Jonesboro Georgia 2 miles from Snownman's house (no longer there) the summer of '76 when they started filming & got to see the Bandit one last time in 2017 at the 40th anniversary of SATB in Jonesboro! We moved across town to Covington in '77 & I got to be in Dukes of Hazzard, then in 1981 I was in Cannonball Run when Burt landed his plane to get beer & 1992 in Heat of the Night! I have seen SATB at least 150 times & know almost everything about the movie & its locations
