I listened to Band Maid for many weeks and tried Nemophila on a whim and was shocked at how different and interesting their music sounded. I got their Revive cd immediately and they are awesome. I wish they would hurry and add to the catalog of songs. Your thoughts about their sound is interesting and educational, thanks.

This was the first song I heard by them. Then I watched every video they had at the time. I love how they change up their music. They were my 3rd favorite band until I saw them live at the Whisky; then they jumped to #1.

All right, in that last section (like the last three minutes or so) you literally spoke my mind with every word and it really inspired me to go into what I, personally, love about Nemophila. So, here's me rambling:
Let me start with how I discovered them. I'm really bad about remembering these things but I think I was watching a reaction to a Lovebites song (great band as well, Nemophila's more my style though), this was in like March or early April, and I overheard the name "Nemophila" several times. So, naturally, I wanted to check out what they were all about. I pulled up their channel and clicked on the first video that piqued my interest - and of course, it was Dissension. My reaction was pretty much the same as yours in your reaction video, just pure joy. It was exactly the kind of music I loved, heavy and catchy. Long story short, I have watched every single music video and cover that they have put out and loved all of it.
Which brings me to the question: Why DO I love them? And while I can't pinpoint every reason ("there's just something about them"), I most certainly can elaborate on the major ones.
First of all, I love them because of them. Now, that may sound odd but it just means to say that it's the people, as much as the music, that keeps me invested in Nemophila. Pretty much every single reaction video I have watched has touched on this. They're constantly smiling, they're wholesome, they're cute, they're beautiful and so much more ... and don't get me started on how frigging talented and charismatic they are as musicians, songwriters, performers, you name it! Their music is diverse, it's fresh, it's experimental at times, all the while staying true to their metal essence. I mean, what else could you possibly want?!
Another aspect, which is just cool as heck, is something that you said yourself. They like the same music that I like. They're rocking Slipknot shirts, Hazuki (my fave btw) is wearing Arch Enemy merch in some videos, just recently they had Rammstein playing in the background of one of their shorts. The knowledge alone that the band I love listens to the same music I do just makes me smile.
I could go on but I realize this has become more of an essay, so I'll leave it at that. To sum up: Nemophila is AWESOME! 🤘🤘

NEMOPHILA is something very different. The convergence of talent in this band is mind blowing when you get to know their individual histories. Never been a big fan of scream/growl, but there is a select few that can do it in a way that is melodic and fits perfectly with their band's sound. MAYU's whistle-tone fry scream, and the way she turn's it on and off is music to my ears and puts NEMOPHILA at the very top of that list IMO. Her rock rasp, cleans, and even her kawaii (cute) vocals top-tier too. She has become my favorite rock vocalist. The band in general is five lightning bolts in a bottle. They've got that magic charisma and chemistry and gets you emotionally invested in their success, plus their music is so diverse from one song to the next that they bridge genres better than anyone out there, and even within the same songs. They have attracted fans from all the biggest J-Rock/Metal bands, we all love NEMOPHILA. 🌸✨🌠

Put me down in the “LOVE” Nemophila camp. First time I heard them was only 30 secs of Dissension and I didn’t love the screams at first listen. The second time I heard them was Life and I have loved them ever since, every single song. They are my favorite band right now over everyone else. They just hit the perfect pocket for me with heavy, catchy, screams and cleans. Also they all seem really cool and good humans, as well a being beautiful.

It took me exactly two songs (Dissention and this one) for me to forget that I don't like screaming in rock music. This band is special, I can't think of a better word.
Much like you, Mayu is exactly the kind of woman that I would love to have ruin my life. :)

Raitei has always been consistently in my Nemophila Top 4. Tamu’s kick drum is RELENTLESS throughout and Hazuki and Saki just absolutely nail their soloing. Great song!💪🏻🤘🏻

  • @Wombatmetal

I love this band because of Mayu and Tamu. Hazuki, Saki and Haraguchi-san are exceptional musicians. But Tamu and Mayu are on another level. Tamu is so creative, and so good with double kicks, doing unexpected things, yet she keeps the song on tempo with that snare. You can be doing your guitar solo or whatever, you can always find that snare. (I'm a bass player). Mayu's vocals are different, especially for a Japanese artist. You don't hear vocal fry on Japanese female singers often. And on stage her body language is so aggressive for a woman. She is like a Japanese version of Tatiana Shmayluk or Alissa White-Gluz. And Mayu throws in the odd blech, and that is so old school.
I also like that their music has such a positive message. I like that in these times. I also like there composition and arranging skills. Some of their competition's songs can get very samey, but Nemophila mixes it up while maintaining a core sound, like say a Babymetal. So I like the variety.
And Mayu has great style. She is such a good front person. It's a good package.

To put it simply, Nemophila can really rock it out, with each individual band member a star in her own right. The fact that the Banshee Queen leads them just makes this cool AF. The catchiness that we so love in Band-Maid songs can also be found in Nemophila songs. There, I've said my peace on why I love this band so much (and even ranked it higher than Band-Maid for a significant portion of time).

  • @leschab

There is something special about this band. No doubt. Their "in studio" cover videos are really excellent. Seeing them wearing street clothes and honestly having fun making video and playing their hero's music will make you love them even more.

  • @benjpr5395
    @benjpr5395 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I like them... correction I LOVE them because they are not afraid of doing whatever the F they want and won't limit themselves to one and only genre of metal like most of the metal bands for the last 30 years... they will try everything and will pretty much do it better than everyone else. I just can't say enough good things about this band! Currently my favorite band after Band-Maid.
Each member brings his own personality and musical experience that set them apart plus they have so much when they play you can't help but having fun with them.
I usually am not a big fan of screaming but they are using it smartly, if it was screaming all the time I wouldn't care for them at all and Mayu's singing voice is just so good it would be a crime to not use it in their music.
Speaking of Revive, this album is just unbelivably good for a first one!! and they didn't include some awesome songs like Monsters, Blooming or Fighter (speaking of their variety of genres those 3 are really different from each other...)
Their future is really bright and I can wait to see how far they will go and hope to see them live one day!

They have won me over so I cannot explain certain comments about the band. I don't like screamo (literally I hate it), but Mayu offers a really different palette of sounds along the songs so it really don´t bother me. They are versatile, they are credited songwriters (and four of them are able to compose) and they are getting bold (in a short period of time). I love that combination. Probably they are just after Band Maid in my love list. In fact I´m buying their CDs (and import that thing from Japan can be expensive, I´m telling you...). I suspect the criticism comes from a certain type of metalhead who doesn't take excursions outside of their niche very well.

Hey Champ, great reaction. Yes, they are a talented group for sure. To answer your question, it took me time to get use to screaming and/or growling. Mayu's style reminds me of what I hear when I listen to Arch Enemy. I like it, she can be both melodic as well as guttural all within the same song. (I'm sure some will disagree, but that's what I hear.) As for this song, you're right, there are a lot of intricate parts. I really dig the "Twin Guitar" effect from Hazuki and Saki (old school vibes for sure). Haraguchi and Tamu just keep the beat and tempo low and quick paced. Overall, nice and heavy!! Looking forward to catching up with everyone and GG soon brother! 🤘

I'm a big fan of Nemophila, although I really don't care for their newest song "Style." I will say that I've never been a fan of "screaming," but for some reason, I like it when Mayu does it. You asked for the reasons that like this band; OK, here it goes: 1) The quality of their musicianship. They are next level musicians. 2) You never know what you're going to get with them. They refuse to stay in a box. 3) I love how Mayu is able to change her voice to fit the song perfectly. One second, she almost sounds like a little girl, and the next second she sounds like a demon from hell. 4) I love how much fun they have when they play. The happiest little metalheads in the business. 5) Their personalities. I have seen them in interviews and you can see how much they truly appreciate their fans and how honored they are that their fans love them. I have actually seen them in tears while talking about this. I could go on, but I think you get my point - I absolutely love this band!

I've loved Nemophila from the beginning. Mainly because I have followed Saki since her days in Destrose and Mary's Blood and have followed Tamu since I first heard her play when she was 16!!!! As a guitar duo Saki and Hazuki may be just a notch below Miyako and Midori but Saki herself is a notch above them individually. I Love ❤️ Love ❤️ Love ❤️ Haraguchi San as a bassist and Mayu...... people have asked me to describe her vocal styling and all I can say is..... it's Mayu!!!! She doesn't sound like anyone else and no one else sounds like her!!!!! I Love Lovebites and I Love Band Maid 💕 ❤️ but I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THESE LADIES OF NEMOPHILA THE MOST!!!!!

I have followed Saki for along time so anything she is involved with I'm automatically onboard with ,and of course her teamed up with Hazuki 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 . Tamu on the drums ,who just happens my 2nd most fave drummer in the entire world 🥁. And then there's Haraguchi who is a legend in her own right 🎸. And Mayu with her most unique style vocals 🙀 . How can you not like them and they are only getting better

I'm not hearing a keyboard during the outro. It sounds like everyone is playing the same riff with Tamu bringing more double bass and china cymbal while one, maybe both of the guitars is using a wah pedal. Maybe it's just me, I don't know.
It took a while for Nemophila to click with me. I think it was Mayu's vocals. I knew the other four were damn good musicians and they all look good, but something wasn't working for me. Then I caught one of their youtube lives and everything fell into place. In a recent interview with Herman Li, Saki said that most of the Japanese rock and metal bands know each other. She specifically said that Nemophila and BAND-MAID know each other and that she and Miyako give each other birthday gifts.

I love Dissension, Raitei and Style. I think they are great tunes. A lot of their other stuff not so much. BUT... they definitely have my interest and I always check it out when they release something new. I think they have massive potential and since they are still relatively new, I feel that they are still developing as songwriters. Like I said, they have my attention and I expect great things from them.
Band Maid had no history with each other. They weren't slogging it out in the clubs for years before getting signed. I feel like in the beginning having outside writers writing their music was really a way for them to coalesce and become a unit. When they were allowed to write their own music well, World Domination happened and the rest is history as they say.

Honestly though. I've heard Dissension back when it came out in 2019. When I first time heard Mayu's scream, it didn't appeal to me and just stop the video. Coming back in 2020, man I love it a lot.

Yeah it's rye-tay like, uh, Friday! She sings it at the end of one of the chorus lines (where the subs say "thunder")
I'm pretty sure that is an overdubbed guitar, they definitely have those extra layers in the recordings. I honestly wish they'd play those lead parts and sparkly bits more live, they do tend to both play the chords/riffs together, and I feel like with two 7-string guitars and a 5-string bass they've got the low end covered enough that someone could chill out at the top of the neck more often! Give it more of the range and texture that's in the recorded arrangement. But I reckon that's probably why they're performing it like that in the video

  • @Kelson64
    @Kelson64 2 ปีที่แล้ว

As an older metal fan, I like when Nemophila goes with chunky dual guitars with heavy bass and drums. I don't mind screaming, as long as there is some sort of melody within the song, either vocally or instrumentality. So, my favorite tracks by them are Ratei, Oiran, Dissension, Hozuki and Revive.
I also really enjoy songs like Life, Rollin Rollin, Fighter and Hypnosis.
While I appreciate songs like Style, they are not the kinds of tracks I would add to my Playlist.

What people don't like about Nemophila? It's the guitars. The guitars are super modern. They sound very Polyphia at times. It's not a bad thing. It's a great thing. This was the one thing Japanese metal was missing. A lot of the bands sound retro.
But a lot of people are not used to the super modern guitar sound. It takes some getting used to for most people. If you're not used to it then it sounds muddy, because it's not doing what you expect.
I love Nemophila but I struggled with the guitars at first. It went back and forth too. One time I would think it sounded great and the next time it sounds muddy.

With Nemophila, the songs that I like I really like and the songs I don't like I still kinda like? Take Rise... In the beginning the music is awesome and the screams match the feeling but then the lyrics change out of screams and they don't really match the vibe... But then the feeling of the music gradually shifts to match the normal singing voice so that when she starts screaming again it doesn't fit anymore. Which sounds cool on paper but takes me out of the moment. If that makes sense at all? Also I'm still waiting for the mini Bass and Drum solos ala BM

Does Nemophila have genius like Kanami or Miyako of Lovebites? They are obviously a brilliant collection of renowned musicians but I am not convinced that they really are a band that has truly gelled yet. Something is missing for me. They are great at playing covers and they are slowly building up a repertoire of their own songs. Perhaps if they continue for a few more years I will be convinced.

RAITEI was the first Nemophila song that I heard, and I was sold instantly. Then I found out who the players were and how freaking good each member was at their craft. They were something different for sure. Experience mixed with young brilliance and a lead singer that had it all for the rock/metal genre. Then I listened to interviews and recognized how special they were as human beings. They are smart about how they handle themselves too because they have seen how the industry works. They are also hungry to learn new techniques even though most would be happy to stay as they already are. Japanese culture probably has a lot to do with it but when you see class like this you grab it and hold onto it as long as you can. Japan for the win again. 💙💙💙💙💙🤘🗾

Their guitarists are maybe just a notch below Miyako and Midori of Lovebites as a duo…which is saying a lot because I think M&M is one of the top, if not the top guitar duos in music today. In general I agree. But I will not dare to rank the members/musicians of Band-Maid, Nemophila and Lovebites. They are all top class, with different stiles and duties. If it is playing, singing, composing or writing. And there are for sure some other bands/musicians which are also members of this high class. Think it is only a question what you prefer. I'm not a Lovebites fan, but have to accept, that they are a top band, no other way.
The only thing Nemophila is a little behind, is the quality of the live ( really live !!! ) songs, but this is only a question of experience and playing together.

While on Amazon Japan buying the new EP by BAND-MAID I had a bit of a mad spend and bought several Blu-rays of other Japanese bands. One of them was 'Revive...It's so nice to finally meet you' by Neophila. What a concert!. It is less than 90 minutes, but all of it is utterly epic. I am not a fan of screaming either, not least because of the fact how much damage singers are doing to their voices when they already have such wonderful sounds to start with....but it is not too bad and I have heard a lot worse. Despite that, I love the overall sound, the variation in music, the joy the band has playing together and the overall talent this band has. I do have a live Lovebites B-R too and while the 2 Guitarists (M & M) play to a slightly higher level, the music played is more one dimensional (IMHO) and I am not a fan of the singer.
So...if you want to see Nemophila live, I fully recommend this Blu-ray.....favourite track from it....Change the World ;)

I was also considering buying that Nemophila concert Blu-ray to take advantage of shared shipping with the new Band-Maid EP. You've just convinced me to pull the trigger! Thanks!
Also agreed on screaming in music as it's usually not my taste and that made me hesitant to get into Nemophila orignally but the rest of their music has been so good that I eventually got pulled in anyway. Mayu's vocals are now one of the few exceptions that I will listen to when it comes to screaming.

@@paulwilson7989 dam they did? I’ve recently found them, dug into their stuff and they are also great. Saki really shines. Champ would like them even if they aren’t making new music for a while

@@KR-mr1hn Yeah, they went on hiatus in April. They have indicated that they could possibly reform at a later time so there is a possibility that they will be back but who knows. They played their last concert in April at Toyasu Pit in Tokyo and released a blu-ray of the concert that can be purchased at the official Mary's Blood site.

Andy - I think Champ would like Mary's Blood as well. He likely wouldn't like it to the same level as Nemophila though.

@@KR-mr1hn I believe they went on hiatus because Saki was busy with Nemophila's tour :D

I was in with both barrels with Nemophila but the album release I fell out of love with them for a bit, songs were very hit and miss for me. But the new tracks since the album are dragging me back to them. I love all the ladies so will always listen to them but as I have said parts of their catalog just don’t hit right for me, which is ok as they have plenty I still love listening to.

I've never made a secret of the fact that I'm usually not a fan of growling or screaming vocalists. So why do I like Mayu and Nemophila? Her clean vocals have so much character from my point of view. This is the counterpart on the weighing scale for me, which keeps me from not liking this band. Mayu combines both sides for me in a ratio that I can live with very well. Combined with the amazing Instruments, I have the perfect counterpart to Band-Maid, should I long for something heavier, more aggressive, or longer solos. And even if it's hard for me to admit it, in terms of versatility, Nemophila might even be a bit ahead of the Maids, which I think they prove impressively with songs like 'Hypnosis' or 'Style' and their covers from all kinds of genres.

I'm on the side of like them but don't 'love' them. I'm a product of the late 70's and 80's metal and rock. I'm more a power metal/thrash fan. LOVEBITES is at the top of my list right now, but, trust me, they tour the US anywhere near me and I'm there enjoying every moment. Just like BAND MAID, not at the very top of my list, but I have their concert circled, bought tickets, and am looking forward to it. Peace

Interesting band. Clearly possessed of very good musicians and singers. I don't find anything to actively dislike in their music, it's very impressive at times, it's just some of it goes in one ear and out the other. I can remember bits from their videos but not much else. I did enjoy all the covers they did during the lockdown. Possibly the problem is I can't work out what they're trying to sell to me. Unlike a lot of Japanese bands they don't seem to have an over-arching theme or purpose.

Overall purpose is to do kick ass music. They are not in a genre or are selling an esthetic. I love Band Maid and Lovebites so no dig at them.

Well let me take a stab at your question. First for a little vinegar. I’m not a fan of covers for the most part. I enjoy them, but they won’t attract me. With that said, a little honey. I understand that they only started (together) in 2019, which is when COVID hit and tossed in a challenge. Their current original music is top tier. I do listen to other groups, but this hits home for me. You asked why I might like this? Well that is tough, but I guess it’s because they take everything I’ve enjoyed about Metal over the last 5 decades and combined the best parts of each period in one group. They are certainly going to shoot to the the top of their sub-genre of Metal. They may not be for everyone, but they are for me.

So I discovered Nemophila thanks to their "Megitsune" cover from Babymetal: i immediately loved her clean vocals, and could appreciate her pig squeals she did live! Since I liked it, I tried listening to a few songs, and I was a bit put off by so much screams (i'm not a scream guy). I then listened to Raitei, and liked it, so I started to listen more to them and I kinda got used to her screams, and they don't bother me anymore if used sparingly (that's why I don't like Adabana too much).
I believe that what I like the most about them it's not the music nor the vocals, but the group itself: if you watch any cover or any live from them, you can see how much fun they have, it's just wonderful! As an example, try their "Banana song" cover :D
Haraguchi-san laughing whenever Mayu screams, Tamu and Haraguchi-san laughing together, all of them headbanging at the same time during some songs.... It just looks so cool, and it warms my hearth!

The singer does not excite me at all…I love the rest of the musicians in the band….Mayu has a nice voice but I’m not a fan of screams…so I feel the weakness of the band is her vocals…the rest of the band is phenomenal! I have tried several times to listen to Mayu singing but I just not liking her singing style - she has talent but that screamo style does not work for me….
