I didn't know at the time I shot this video that it would be the last I'd shoot in this kitchen. We have wanted to live and raise our kids on a farm on the east coast for quite a while and when the chance presented itself we just said lets do it and do it now! I believe sometimes in life you just have to go for it and make the life you want to live happen. We lived in this house when we got married, when we had our kids, and when one day Brian said to me "Why don't you try making videos of your recipes?" Though I was a terrified deer in headlights, I'm so glad I gave it a go because thats how I got to meet all of you. I can't tell you how much I enjoy being in the kitchen with all of you week after week as we celebrate our love of good food. You see, I believe one of the best ways to show people you care is to go to the effort of making a lovely meal for them and I love being able to help you all do that for the people in your lives. So as we say goodbye to this kitchen, my heart is filled with so much gratitude for the opportunity it gave me and at the same time so much excitement for whats to come. ❤️John
You're such a ray of sunshine, glad to hear you're loving your life and doing the things you want to do. Even if every time you post a video you threaten my diet.
Buckeyes are a nut-like seed from the Horse Chestnut or Buckeye Tree that look just like the candy but unlike your beautiful confection, are not edible. While I’ve heard of black eyed pease and buck eye beans, I’ve never heard of Buckeyed peas, and neither has google. Sorry if this reads as snarky, I totally don’t mean it to. Love that you shared your recipe for buckeyes and can’t wait to see the new kitchen!
Correct. The buckeye tree is the state tree of Ohio (hence Ohio State Buckeyes) and these look like the perfectly round version of their large fruits/ nuts. (Unless you're me who accidentally makes them very oblong and lopsided LOL) Thanks John! Love your videos!
Is anyone else embarrassed at how much they are crushing on this guy?? ; ) When I make one of his recipes, my husband will ask, "So did you get this recipe from your boyfriend??" Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing if everyone we came across in life had this much warmth & positivity??
I am a Buckeye from Ohio and we make these all the time. They are actually named after the nut, Buckeye’s! They are especially popular during football season. Go Ohio State Buckeyes !!!!!
@@jeffersonholland9797 Yeah but, the Wolverine tears may have a lil blood in the salt. lol AND, those tears will definitely taste like they've had the crap beat out of them. No can use. lol
I’ve never made a cookie a day in my life. I love Buckeyes. You did a great job explaining and made it easy for guys like me who are not good at making cookies. Mine turned out great using your recipe. Thank u!
I have used different recipes over the years and not one came out as delicious as this one. The peanut butter was just right and didn't give me heartburn like the other recipes. Thank you
I cant tell you how much I enjoy your videos. The way you explain everything. Your videos are a definite go to when i need help. I have a small home based baking business and I find myself always pushing myself out of my comfort zone lol. After watching your videos it inspires me that i can do it. Thank you
I used to make something close to this about 40 years ago. I used 2 sticks melted butter and I added 2 wax packs of finely crushed Graham crackers the other ingredients were about the same and the result was more like a Reeses pb cup. I used to show up at parties with them and I'd overhear others say "IT'S THEM"!!! I made them much smaller and would pop them into individual bon bon festive fluted paper cups and would present them in small gift boxes of about 20 pieces. It's been so long since i last made these but I do remember using candy makers wax in the coating to give them a gorgeous sheen. Yours looked so good as well!
My mom made these every year but called them peanut butter balls and they were dipped all the way without leaving an empty space. She made boatloads. I used to help her roll them out. My sister took over making them after my mom passed but now she quit making them so I'm doing them thus year. We don't have kids and I don't think my doggies would be good assistants. LOL Can't wait to try them!
I could see being Besties with you!! My best girlfriend was my friend Buzz who taught me a lot about things I didn't know about people, life and such that my parents kept me sheltered from the things they didn't understand. I love your videos and could see myself assisting you in the kitchen or showing you some of my favorite dishes that I've created. Much love and I'm a forever FAN!
Thanks for all the tips. I've made these many years ago - no problem. I decided to make them again a couple of years ago and it was a nightmare. The chocolate melting part was a disaster. If there was something I could do wrong I probably did it. Thanks for the tips on melting chocolate and using the glass instead of a wide bowl. I may have to try these again this year. You make it look as easy as I remember, except for that one time.
I'm from the buckeyes state and I make candy buckeyes every Christmas.. I use a small cookie scoop to measure out my peanut butter balls it makes it so much faster.
Watching this made me really happy! Every year around Christmas time, I would make buckeyes with my Oma. It was a huge family ordeal and we all got together once a year to do it. She's since passed away due to cancer, but my family still makes buckeyes every year in her honor. We love to share the recipe with others and share the buckeyes we make with our friends! While I know this isn't her recipe (obviously!) it's nice to see the recipe get shared! Hopefully this will inspire some family traditions as well! I love watching your videos, but this one is just special to me. Thanks for always working so hard and sharing yummy recipes with us! Good luck with the move as well!
I love your honesty about things that don't always turn out. It makes me feel like less of a doofus. Lol...I get orders every Christmas from relatives that I have to make these. Mine aren't as pretty as yours but they sure taste good. But hey, I am improving my kitchen skills. Yesterday I made Sea Salt Pretzel cookies. I had to brown the butter, which I had never done before, and it was a huge success. Gave some to my parents and they ate them all the same night!! Mine are almost gone too. I love it. Happy hubby and son. Lol I will take that last huge buckeye you did, please.....
I’m from Ontario, Canada and hadn’t heard of buckeye’s until the recipe started showing up on my recommendations more than once these past few months. You have always been the most entertaining, clear and precise baker to watch so it was your recipe I followed. They turned out great and look just like your’s and taste fantastic. They will be served with the other cookies on the cookie platter Christmas Day. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas to you and your’s.
These were so good. The first 10 or so were made exactly as written above. And then I noticed I still had a lot of chocolate left so I threw in a few peanuts to snack on. When I resumed dipping the peanutbutter balls one fell off the tooth pick(so it was covered in chocolate with no peanut butter showing) and into the chocolate covered peanuts, that determined the fate of the rest of the bunch! Love both ways😉 Thanks and enjoy the ranch!❤
The most important part of this video (for me) is 6:35. I am glad you mentioned that, because I have put these in the freezer in the past (before seeing your video), and they did just what you said they'd do: Sweat. These look delicious. Thank you for sharing. Thumbs up.
Ingredients: 1 cup peanut butter 5 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 2 cups powdered sugar 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 2 teaspoons coco oil (or shortening, butter, whatever you prefer) Directions: 1. Add one cup of peanut butter into a bowl (spray/coat the cup with cooking spray so peanut butter doesn't stick to it), a long with your butter. Mix for about 5 seconds, then add your vanilla extract. Mix until creamy, making sure to scrape the bowl. 2. Add one cup of powdered sugar, mix, then add your second cup. Scrape bowl if necessary. Mix until you get a playdough/clay texture. 3. Start forming your peanut butter balls, each should be 2 tablespoons/20 grams. Place them on a baking sheet. If you get peanut butter on your hands, wash it off, or you can dust your hands with powdered sugar. Place in fridge (I recommend the freezer) for a half an hour. 4. Put your chocolate in a microwave safe bowl, and add your oil. Put in microwave and do 30 second bursts. One chocolate is halfway melted, take out and start mixing. Do not keep in microwave until fully melted. It will burn. Put your peanut butter balls on toothpicks, and dip then 2/3 of the way in the chocolate. 5. Put in fridge or freezer for another half an hour to set.
About shortening: Absolutely honestly; frying fried oysters in shortening gives an amazing oyster flavor. We tested it at home comparing shortening, vegetable oil, and butter. The shortening produced amazing oyster flavor, quite noticeably. H. Lloyd
Your video is my second one about this recipe, and yours is tops! I love the hint about not using the freezer because they will sweat, and the addition of vanilla sounds good. Thanks.
Hi John. Just watched your buckeye video. Perfect!BTW, Tjey are called buckeyes because they look exactly like the nut from a buckeye tree. It’s an Ohio thing. All Ohioans make buckeyes. As kids we strung the nuts and made necklaces. The buckeye is the Ohio state tree. Love your videos. They are so complete with measurements and dire cations. I’m 90 years old and still learn from you, my favorite chef and baker!
Lauretta Barker those of us who have lived in Ohio make these all the time and we don’t bother to close the toothpick hole. We have Buckeye trees and the mascot for The Ohio State University is Brutus Buckeye. Google for some fun! Enjoy
I make some Christmas treats using crushed biscuits, desiccated coconut, dates, walnuts, sweet condensed milk and unsalted butter, and it gets 'really sticky' when shaping the mixture into balls. So, this year I thought of placing the mixture in the fridge for about 20 minutes before scooping them out with an ice-cream scoop - just a thought... I'll try it with your Buckeyes and see what happens... Thanks for your recipe John!
These are awfully good. I went with your recipe because I liked the addition of butter and vanilla to the peanut butter. I did use dark chocolate to dip them, just cuz I like it. The organic peanut butter I got was very loose so I had to chill the balls several times between dippings. Still, quite luscious.
You made me just go into fits of laughter when at a point (I shall not mention where) you paused, realized what you were saying and corrected course. Oh thank you for the great hilarity! You are a doll.
Loved the suggestion to use coconut oil to thin the chocolate AND the tip to smooth over the toothpick hole! Thanks. So enjoy your videos! Looking forward to seeing you in your new kitchen.
Yum! I have not so fond memories of rolling out large batches of these for my grandma at her kitchen counter. She actually adds a bit of paraffin wax to the chocolate for that perfect snap when you bite into it. Sounds weird but it works.
You are awesome! I am making these for my family this weekend. Love your style, personality, and approach... you should easily get your own cooking show
I've made these at Christmas for years. But, I add ground up graham crackers, and coconut flakes. They are great too, but I might try these -- as some of my friends don't like coconut.
Fill a two cup measuring cup with 1 cup of water and spoon in peanut butter till it reads 2 cups (water displacement method). It's cleaner and easier than using a 1 cup measuring cup. If you off-set the toothpick the melted chocolate covers the hole and you can place your whole thumb on the uncovered peanut butter portion to remove them.
My first attempt at Buckeyes this evening did not go as well as I hoped🤣 they were messy, melty and sloppy. I mean I’m still going to eat them, but..! Thank you for the tips, if I ever try to make these myself again, I will definitely use your video as a guide!
You are so fun to watch! Love your videos, John. I hope the move has gone well...can’t wait to see the new kitchen. I also hope to see an update on all the animals 🐓 🐐 🐕. Best wishes to the whole family! ❤️ from 🇨🇦

Oh John, I stumbled upon your videos and absolutely love them!! And your quirky humor!... I wish you and your family nothing but the best, and hope you return in your new kitchen! Would love to see you, and the new kitchen, again! 💜
Thanks for the helpful hints. I've been making these for years and you've made it that much easier for me. Merry Christmas from Kentucky to you and your family and might I just add, you've got a wonderful family to boot.
I think what you’re referring to as buckeye peas, is what i would call black eyes peas. I’m from Missouri where buckeyes come from a tree and are considered nuts. But, I realize people have different names for the same thing all across our Country. Your Buckeyes look so tasty! I will definitely try these! Thank you. ❤️
Those look fantastic, I love peanut butter and chocolate together. Here in Australia, these are un heard of, but I would love to try these out. Thank you
I make these every Christmas now and it's always a hit. To make them even prettier (almost perfect!) I get a piece of parchment paper and get the excess chocolate off before putting them back on the original sheet. That way the chocolate doesn't pool at the bottom and they look perfect!
I just made these and they turned out fantastic. Delicious too. Walmart carries the chocolate. It’s Ghirardelli brand chocolate and it’s in the baking aisle.
My sister used to make these with gulf wax. Her (sort of) boyfriend at the time taught her. I'm not sure if the wax was the original way of making buckeyes? Or if some nut decided to add the wax in the recipe lol. But was very difficult to get right if I remember correctly. Its been over 20 years since I've had them. I'm thinking of making them today but more like John's style . I'm glad you guys on TH-cam have easier/more sensible ways to make chocolate buckeyes. I never did understand the wax concept. 😅😅
John you are a wonderful teacher and so funny to boot. I love watching your vids. Greetings from Australia where we are getting into our summer Christmas season
I am in my 60s. We have made these since I was a child. Traditionally a little parfin wax was used with the chocolate. Like other on here has mentioned the name comes from the nut of the buckeye tree. We have them all over the Smoky Mountains. Sometimes people confuse the Buckeyes with Chestnuts. They look similar but not related at all. Buckeyes are toxic.
John, I just discovered your channel and I am hooked! Your tutorials are so professional and well executed. Love your great recipes and your cheerful humorous personality too! Thanks for sharing. Happy Holidays!
John, I have a recipe for Buckeye's that uses Rice Krispies in the recipe. It is pretty dry but they are delicious. If you want to get a taste of what that recipe taste's like, get a rice cake, spread peanut butter on it and sprinkle with chocolate chips. I love Buckeye's!
“I’m not living that shortening life...” I love it. You’re so funny, John! Your recipe videos are lovely and I so enjoy them. Now if I could just find a way to teleport you into my kitchen to make all your yummies and then quickly teleport you back before my husband came home and discovered my food deception (because, of course, you would be teleporting around just to make me look good-thanks in advance, by the way)! 😉 But seriously, congrats on making your dream come true!
Refrigerate the dough for 15 min. It's less sticky and they roll smooth. Keep putting back in the fridge a few minutes (if it happens again) and they will roll smooth. I make a different recipe every year. These are the best! 🎄❤️⛄🍫
Very nice. I've always found that the traditional recipe is too sweet for my taste and that adding the butter just takes away from the peanut flavor and makes the filling harder to work with. So I eliminate the butter altogether. My solution was to substitute finely ground crisp rice cereal for one of the cups of confectioner's sugar. I've also been toying with the idea of using a cup of almond flour instead of the cereal meal. Additionally I like to use half a cup of Jif peanut butter and half a cup of 100% natural ground peanut butter like Smucker's for really intense peanut butter flavor and some added texture which I think is nice instead of the smooth pasty consistency of traditional buckeyes. Having removed a lot of the sweetness from the filling, where I don't think it does much for the candy, it's very nice to use a rich milk chocolate such as Ghirradelli milk chocolate baking chips for the coating.
You Always make me smile! Thanks for that and I love this recipe. I can’t wait to see what you have planned for your next video in your new kitchen. CONGRATULATIONS!
I'm from Ohio, the Buckeye State, so my family has these at every get together. I've never heard of buckeye peas. There's black eye peas. The actual buckeye comes from a tree. Ohio's state tree.
I make these...especially at the holidays but they are ALWAYS the first thing to go at a bake sale! Plus they make great gifts. And, my family likes them frozen so I usually keep them in there.....but they usually don’t last long. John, your recipe is just a little different from what I use so I may have to try it. Can’t wait to see what your new kitchen looks like - I’m sure who ever is moving into your old house will feel some very good “kitchen karma” Peace & best wishes.

Yum! I have not so fond memories of rolling out large batches of these for my grandma at her kitchen counter. She actually adds a bit of paraffin wax to the chocolate for that perfect snap when you bite into it. Sounds weird but it works.
Hannah Quinn my grandma added paraffin too!
Hannah Quinn also added the paraffin at my house growing up.
I add the wax too.
I totally chuckled out loud when you patted on the vanilla as a cologne!! 🤣
A clean, and very lightly oiled fingertip is the best tool for smoothing away the toothpick hole.
I truly enjoy your videos. They
answer all of my questions. And I enjoy the little added humor. Thank you.
Nice! Gonna try this. Funny as usual. Now my neck smells like vanilla and I'm not about that shortening life. 🤣🤣🤣
Haha! I do the same thing with vanilla! I cannot wait to try this!
❤️ from 🇨🇦
As a fellow twin parent, I felt that when you said “I ain’t got time for that!” 😂😂😂 you always mention your kids which warms my heart you seem like an amazing dad, and I love all of your videos! One twin parent to another, you’re awesome! ❤️❤️❤️
Oh John, I stumbled upon your videos and absolutely love them!! And your quirky humor!...
I wish you and your family nothing but the best, and hope you return in your new kitchen! Would love to see you, and the new kitchen, again! 💜
These are my son's faves. I will have to make some for him. Thanks for sharing John! Love you videos!
one of my fav things to make. So simple and yummy! Plus. who doesn't love chocolate and peanut butter together? (unless you are allergic I guess)
His innuendo is so subtle but it's there! Anyway can't wait to see your new kitchen and more of those fab recipies!
Thanks for the helpful hints. I've been making these for years and you've made it that much easier for me. Merry Christmas from Kentucky to you and your family and might I just add, you've got a wonderful family to boot.
I'm in the UK and have never heard of these, but they sound delicious and I can't wait to make some 😍
I think what you’re referring to as buckeye peas, is what i would call black eyes peas. I’m from Missouri where buckeyes come from a tree and are considered nuts. But, I realize people have different names for the same thing all across our Country. Your Buckeyes look so tasty! I will definitely try these! Thank you. ❤️
They're named after the nut
Those look fantastic, I love peanut butter and chocolate together. Here in Australia, these are un heard of, but I would love to try these out. Thank you
Not too many Ohio fans in Australia these days? 😁😁😁😁
I make these every Christmas now and it's always a hit. To make them even prettier (almost perfect!) I get a piece of parchment paper and get the excess chocolate off before putting them back on the original sheet. That way the chocolate doesn't pool at the bottom and they look perfect!
So much comedic potential. Someone needs to make a parody of this.
Your thinking of black eyed peas, and they are called buckeyes after the seed pods off buckeye trees ❤ great recipe and fabulous presentation
I always buy peanut butter and dark chocolate at Trader's joe. Now I can make them Thanks! For Halloween, you can add an MnM in the center.... Awsome!
finally a good buckeye recipe!!! thank you
John you are a wonderful teacher and so funny to boot. I love watching your vids. Greetings from Australia where we are getting into our summer Christmas season
"A bumpy texture, to the balls." He's such a pro, barely cracked a smile. ;)
John,
I have a recipe for Buckeye's that uses Rice Krispies in the recipe. It is pretty dry but they are delicious. If you want to get a taste of what that recipe taste's like, get a rice cake, spread peanut butter on it and sprinkle with chocolate chips. I love Buckeye's!
2:17 Life advice I'll never forget... LOL
He's not living that shortening life, ladies.
You're so precious!! I love watching you joke in the kitchen and your stuff looks so awesome.

But seriously, congrats on making your dream come true!
That's it. Your smile is making me drool
Yeah he is eye candy especially with that smile.
I Love all Your Videos.
All your Wishes come true
White chocolate with red dye for Halloween
Great recipe! Thanks for sharing with us. I love your video!
I'm from Ohio, the Buckeye State, so my family has these at every get together. I've never heard of buckeye peas. There's black eye peas. The actual buckeye comes from a tree. Ohio's state tree.
Lopp
I love your recipes and your dry sense of humor😂😂
I always was told that buckeyes were poisonous also. I live in S.Illinois and disease has wiped out the trees along time ago.Nice video!Tyvm.💕⚘
I just made these and they came out so good! Thanks chef 💗
You should add rice krispy for some crunch
I make these...especially at the holidays but they are ALWAYS the first thing to go at a bake sale! Plus they make great gifts. And, my family likes them frozen so I usually keep them in there.....but they usually don’t last long.
John, your recipe is just a little different from what I use so I may have to try it. Can’t wait to see what your new kitchen looks like - I’m sure who ever is moving into your old house will feel some very good “kitchen karma” Peace & best wishes.
I bid thee farewell kitchen! Your memory will forever be in my What's for Eat and Liked Video Playlists. Time to wait for the arrival of the new kitchen videos!
