I think people sleeping on any S&V set right now because it ain't Sword and Shield are gonna regret not chasing these IRs. They're beautiful cards and I think they'll be looked back upon fondly and have high desirability for years to come. There's pretty much mons from every generation and all tastes. What's not to like?
alot of collectors like to collect things that are rare... it feels good to have thing that others dont etc i guess? those irs in swsh and future will have over 20000 psa10 pops in the future sealed included, its extremly common and u hardly will regret not having something that u can find literally everywhere.
@@cjloha91Nice! The more desirable IRs are the ones you're having trouble pulling... hmmm... makes me think that all IRs aren't printed equally. Good luck on completing the set!
I like seeing attention to the SV era because I am a fan of the artwork and sets. A lot of these cards do demand an increase in price considering pull rates and artwork. I don’t think they should all be this high. I do think a lot of these artworks should be around the $10 range or higher. I’ve opened a lot of packs for very sets and a lot of times I don’t even pull an illustration.
Buyouts, panic, fomo, everyone looks for something else, then rinse repeat. Then the previous buyout item corrects and come back down/stabilizes. Tag teams, then alt arts, now illustration rares. I say the discontinued rainbow rares are next.
They did it with the M Pokemon. I was grabbing them as I came across them and not all were expensive, but now, the hype from youtubers has made the prices go up.
That’s one thing I never really understood was the ‘Listing Amount’. In order for buyouts or cornering the market to work you need to wipe supply. How do multiple cards only have 20-30 total listings when Pokémon has been printing like crazy and packs are being ripped like crazy?
Thanks for the info! I’m trying to be patient with the last 3 cards I need for my 151 complete set so I appreciate the reminder that it’s not a race and I don’t have to FOMO when I see prices skyrocket.
I'm really curious about something, Danny talks about price increases in a similar fashion to how someone may speak about crypto, stocks, gold, etc. i.e. "massive increase" ($8 to $13). This type of reaction only makes sense if you are buying these bulk though, is that what people do? Like If you have one card it doesn't mean much but if person buys like 100 cards then it's a different story.
I look at in a way of an entire collection. If you are constantly navigating the market and adding to your collection at the lowest possible price point, your collection gains value. So you are correct, but rather than focusing on it as a single card, think of it more as an entire collection of cards of different variety.
I would like to hear a video on comparisons from old tournament rules/data/winnings compared to the new changes to get an idea on if it seems worth going to any tournament in the future
Do you think part of these artificial fluctuations in card prices have to do with events like card party where there will be a huge movement in cards so the price is adjusted accordingly beforehand?
Great research, as usual, Danny. Thanks for putting all the time and energy into these videos. You present a great snapshot in time and help us decide where to spend our collecting dollars. Side note: Reading TCG Player at-a-glance Take the word “from” and replace it with “as low as”. Example : 15 listings “from” = 15 listings “as low as” Which means the lowest price you can buy this card at has 15 listings It would help if they put: 15 of “X” listings as low as “price” or something like The total number of listings is "X" and you can buy 15 of these listings as low as "Y" Why they don’t. Who knows? It would be easier at a glance to see how many active listings of any card are available.
It’s probably grading companies looking to pregrade and sell the tens in their vending machines, offloading all the rest into the open market at higher price due to them buying it out
For me personally, the best SV sets this far: 1. 151 (Srsly, OG set, who doesnt like? Well unless terastal eevee comes into fruition) 2. Paldean Fates (Good to rip, if only there were more Illustration rares for the set) 3. Paldea Evolve (Considerable large set, and easier pull rate per booster box) Worst set thus far: 1. Obsidian Flames (If only the set size was as large as paldea evolve) 2. Base set (The SIRs are not like SIRs)
Personally I think people are seeing the newer SV sets and being disappointed with the SIRs and full art trainers and such, and the normal Illustration Rares are actually being looked at with some rose tinted glasses
During the summer price decreases can happen. But for sure it feels artificial how sudden the price change can happen. And also the fact that for popular alt arts there would be so few available makes no sense. Feels like a shift from alt arts to something else. So go away in May and be back in September might be a thing too?
Honestly at this point, I'm more pissed I didn't buy Eevee opening weekend. Almost considering just buying the Japanese rather than English for the difference in cost.
The Japanese one is absolutely gorgeous and way more affordable. I think that is also a good point to call out on your part is that the Japanese singles can be had so much cheaper
They had a set of all thr art rares from the Japanese set for $28 before the set released in english idk if it's gone up since but I kind of wish I'd of gotten it.
@@DannyPhantump I fully understand that collectability between English vs Japanese will warrant some differences in prices. But it's kinda wild to me that the Japanese you can buy and have it shipped for $20 tops, when the English is twice that on a rough average. Collection dollars just don't seem to go as far as they used to these days. Or maybe I'm just running out of affordable chase cards. 😅

Pretty crazy that buyout groups are still doing this and able to artificially keep prices at 75% above what they otherwise would be. In some cases, more like 90% higher. Wouldn't touch modern cards with a 10-foot pole, personally. These newer sets are decent, but they're priced as if they're 15 years old and wildly scarce, and nothing could be less true, meaning prices WILL fall a ton before long.
This is why I collect Japanese. They're so much cheaper, it's insane. And they look better. No Illustration Rare should cost more than 40 bucks period, I don't care how cool the Eevee and Groudon look.

Most of the competitive stuff is fine. I think people are overreacting. As the game grows world's will be harder to get into. I would have liked to have seen Oceania, latam, and the Middle East not get shafted. I also think they should expand regionals, many players I think just want to play in these types of tournaments. If regionals are special less players would be upset about chasing worlds. 3 larger tournaments get the "feel" of making them special but really hurt those that can't travel far for whatever reason. Sometimes you need to, but I hate to see people being shut out.
