  • Today's Famous Grave I go to visit The lady of the Lamp and Nurse Florence Nightingale.
Florence Nightingale 12 May 1820 - 13 August 1910) was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organised care for wounded soldiers at Constantinople.

I might live in Kentucky but I absolutely love Unusual Things and try and watch all of them. I really enjoy seeing all the cemeteries while you talk about the person. I might not recognize the names of everyone but I watch a lot of the old English sitcoms so quite a few are familiar. And you’re so respectful as you’re walking and talking through the cemetery. I think I’ve found it! 👈🏻

Hi Paul, LOVE your channel ❤️ !!!! What a beautiful video. What an amazing woman 😇🙏 At first when I saw her tombstone I was mortified that it was soooooo simple and seemed to lack any gratitude, appreciation, admiration and respect for everything that this incredible woman accomplished but then I read that it was her wish for it to remain simple. Sounds like a deeply compassionate kind-hearted human being. God Bless you Florence!! You are walking amongst the angels. 😇😇 😇 😇

Some male patients fall in love with the nurse looking after them even in todays hospitals, it's known as the Florence Nightingale Effect.

Changed and reformed modern nursing in Crimea as far as I remember (from school not actually there- not that old :)) basic things like washing hands with soap wasn’t being done. Infection rates plummeted because of changes enforced by Nightingale. Nursing became fashionable in Victorian Britain after Florence’s accounts published, whereas prior nursing had been deemed as an undesirable work for ‘ladies’. It’s been a long time since school; hope I haven’t made a mess with my Memory!

A beautiful tribute to a wonderful, brave woman who devoted her life to the sick an vulnerable and must of brought so much light to those she cared for.
In 1986 I suffered from kidney failure and fast forward to present day I'm now terminally ill and I thank all that have helped me and offered their devotion to love and care for me so a huge thank you to Florence Nightingale who set the standards for today's nursing albeit the nurses are rushed off their feet bless them 🙏🏻

Fascinating, Paul. Another famous and influential person buried in a quiet country churchyard, like Montgomery and Churchill. There's a Florence Nightingale museum near London Bridge and nearby is the Old Operating Theatre and Herb Garret museum which depicts early forms of surgery, and isn't for the squeamish. They used to sprinkle sawdust on the floor to soak up the blood.

It seems so incongruous that her relatives have a full inscription, and yet the woman who has saved so many lives and who continues to save lives well into the future, through her nursing principles and reforms, has so little on her headstone. It is almost obscene. Thank goodness she was recognised during covid with the Nightingale hospitals. It is almost unimaginable the impact that Florence has had on humanity and always will have on humanity. Absolutely staggering really. Thanks Paul.

Fascinating detail on such a special lady. My eldest daughter has newly qualified as a staff nurse and is working in accident and emergency. At such a young age she is seeing and dealing with harrowing personal tragedies daily. All of our health service staff are truly special people and it is a job I just couldn’t do. They deserve so much more support and salary than they currently get. Florence led the way and set an outstanding example. RIP Florence. Great video as always Paul. Thanks 👍🏻

Did you know that at the age of 37 she took to her bed, initially through illness, but she never got out of her bed again. She also went against anyone that advocated careers for women. Many nurses trained in her schools but refused to work directly under her. She said she preferred men to have the highest careers stating they were more capable than women. Yes she wrote many papers about medicine, but many of them are not followed today. Many nurses today do not admire her. Nursing tutors today don’t give her much time. She is said to be the founder of nursing because there wasn’t a nursing profession at the time, not for her medical knowledge. She founded her schools and they were the first to exist. I could go on, but suffice it to say, she was a very selfish and rude woman.

good old flossie. I'm a nurse. she put nurses in white to prove the clothing was spotless (they used to wear black) she was a genius on asepsis before there WAS such. everything was scrubbed. however, in her later life, she complained of illiness, and was bedridden. nothing was ever proved to be wrong with her, and she lived to old age.

It's nice to see that they did Florence Nightingale proud by providing her with a beautiful memorial. It's great to see that it's standing the test of time. of Nursing back in 1977. She left a real legacy in what she did, especially in the face of opposition and that she was a woman who was determined to do what she wanted to do, as many women were suppressed and had no freedom and were expected to be submissive.

What a beautiful memorial! I think you said it was a special marble or similar? Just wondering how it’s stayed in such pristine condition for over 100 years, unless persons unknown, regularly clean it and touch up the writing when necessary. But it’s certainly stunning, and fitting for the lady who forged ahead and established the basic rules of hygiene for a start, which lessoned many infections for a start.
You think about the Russia v Uranian war currently raging around Ukraine and the Crimea yet again, and think what it must have been like for those young women landing back there then in those awful times of battle and mayhem, and immediately met with wounded, dead and dying men…how frightening it must have been with the noise of guns, cannons etc firing around and over them. I’m glad she lived a long life, and as one who unfortunately has spent much time in hospitals over time, I am very grateful to her for all her input and basic training for nursing.
Thankyou Paul…I’m so sorry you had such an early start and long drive, but really appreciate all the trips you make, and famous people you find to introduce us to!! Take care and stay safe! Love Helen 🙋‍♀️😘👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🦋🦋🦋🦋🥰

One impressive thing she did was to invent a way to display her statistical evidence, in a way it couldn't be ignored, even from a woman (not my, but 19th century bias), when it came to the reason for mortality in the Crimean war. Just look up "rose diagram" or "peacock diagram", still very much used today.

Great presentation again Paul . Nice to remember a nurse who gave so much to people with health needs . We all need medical help at some time in our lives . I am currently on dialysis 3 times a week with great care given to me by THE NHS . I enjoy your tributes and wonder who will be next ? I think i found it !!!

So Florence’s sister died on Florence’s 70th birthday! 3 months after their mother died!
Their Father was born William Edward Shore but due to inheriting the estate he also had to take on the family name.

Any war would have tested any young lady & the Crimean war was pretty grim, however four years after her death WW1 & the carnage that followed would have been terrible for Florence to understand. RIP to a great & kind lady.

I lived in Southampton for most of the 80’s, I wish I’d known where she was buried, strange not much is written for her on the memorial compared to the other family members

That was interesting to see. modest to the end accordingly to her inscription. She was indeed an earth angel who lived to do God's work.
