    TOEFL Independent Writing - How to Come Up With Ideas
    Many of you have asked me how to come up with ideas in TOEFL Independent Writing. What should you do if you have no idea what to write about in your independent essay? I show you how you can come up with ideas for the independent task really quickly. I used this strategy when writing my independent essay and this strategy helped me score 30/30 in TOEFL Writing.

    FYI
    The examples I use in the video are made up by me.
    1. Create Mind Maps
    When I studied for TOEFL Writing, I created mind maps for several topics and this was extremely helpful to me. If you create mind maps in advance of your TOEFL, this will make it a lot easier for you to write an essay for the independent task because you will find reasons quickly and you will know the vocabulary you need for this topic. In the video I show you how to create mind maps for three topics: education, environment, and health. The topics in the independent task in TOEFL Writing are about everyday life, so you should think about such topics when creating your mind maps.
    2. Create a Link
    Imagine you are taking the TOEFL and you get your independent essay question (the question is also called the prompt). There are two ways things can go: either you get a question that is about one of the topics of your mind maps or you get a question which does not seem to be related to your mind maps. The great thing is that it does not matter which type of question you get, you can write a great essay in both cases. Why? Because you prepared mind maps and this is all you need in order to come up with amazing ideas for your independent essay.
    Let’s imagine you get a question that has nothing to do with your mind maps at first sight. The trick is to create a link between the question and your mind maps. Have a look at the example I talk about in the video. If you get this question in the independent task, you can easily relate it to your mind maps about the environment and health. You just need to think about which of the ideas in your mind map are useful for this topic. Then you derive two reasons from that. The great thing is that your two reasons talk about different fields (the environment and health). This means that you use different vocabulary related to these fields which will improve your TOEFL Writing score considerably because you show the examiner that you have a broad range of vocabulary.
    You can use this strategy for every question that may appear in TOEFL Independent Writing. I recommend preparing several mind maps about different topics of everyday life. This way it will be easier for you to write your independent essay in the TOEFL test because it is likely that you will get a question that is in some way related to your mind maps. Always remember that the examiner does not care about which reasons you provide - the important thing is that your reasons address the question. You should use this to your advantage and choose reasons that are familiar to you because you already thought about them in your mind maps.
    Also, remember that the examiner does not care about your opinion. For example, if you get an agree/disagree question, it does not matter whether you agree or disagree with the statement. The important thing is that you can write about your opinion by using enough reasons and examples to support it. Therefore, make sure that you have enough reasons for the side you choose. Let’s imagine you disagree with a statement and you can only think of one reason to support your opinion, but you can think of two or more reasons in favour of this statement. In this case I recommend agreeing with the statement, although you actually disagree. The reason for this is that it will be easier for you to write an independent essay if you can provide more reasons and it will get you a higher score in the independent task in TOEFL Writing.

    Hey Juva! First of all, happy holidays :) Second, I would like to give you a big thanks for your work. Your videos are amazing! I studied with you for the speaking part a few days before my TOEFL exam. The book that I bought didn't have any crushing advice for this section, I was struggling a lot with it and consequently panicking a bit. However, with your advice, it went so well! I also watched your videos about the writing part which definitely helped me to write constructive essays. I got my result today: 113/120! And with 27 for the speaking which is incredible. Again thank you so much Juva, you are the best!

    Hi! I really like your channel and all your tips! I practice my writing and sometimes find really weird topics. For example: 'Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Not everyone will succeed in life on their first try. However, they should not give up". What do you think about such questions? Maybe you saw similar ones? Is it possible to face something like this one on the exam? By the way, this one was from one of the unofficial TOEFL prep websites, so I am not sure if this one is real.

    • @juva
      @juva  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ilia, I'm so glad you like the channel :). Generally, every type of question may come up - what they all have in common is that they are related to everyday life. Therefore, don't worry about the type of question, rather think about everyday topics and relevant vocabulary. Mind maps are a great way to do this :).

    Thanks a lot for your great videos. I have a question about a writing question I've read but I couldn't understand the meaning of it. Can you explain what is the main idea here? Are they asking for the disadvantages of new communications or something else?
    Here is the question:
    "Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
    Although technology has made communication easier, there are still as many misunderstandings among people as there were in the past. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer."

    • @juva
      @juva  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm so glad you like the videos :). That's an agree/disagree question. This means that you have to state whether you agree or disagree with the statement and you must provide reasons and examples for your opinion. Sure! Broader topics might be relationships (for example, whether people in relationships should always be of the same opinion), communication (for instance, whether people should always tell the truth), and work (for example, whether people should always try to do their best at work).

      Your mind maps should include topics such as education, environment, and health. The TOEFL use topics of everyday life that you are familiar with 😀.

    Hey juva! Are we allowed to use idioms in toefl independent writing task?

      Hey Harsimran, I'd recommend using formal language in TOEFL Writing. Idioms are rather informal, so I would avoid them here.

      Hey Harsimran, you can practice using advanced vocabulary and grammar when speaking. Record yourself, after that listen to your recording and think about how you can rephrase your sentences. Then repeat the speaking task using more advanced grammar and vocabulary. If you do this several times, you will get used to it. Hope this helps :).

    Hi Juva . Kindly evaluate my essay and give me some advice please .
    " in twenty years there will be fewer cars than there are today"
    Nowadays , some may hold the opinion that in the future there will be less cars than there are today, but others have a negative attitude . If I were asked to choose , I would definitely opt for that in twenty years there will be more vehicles than there are today . I feel this way for two main reasons, and I will develop this idea in the subsequent paragraphs.
    To begin with , the raising income makes it easy to own a car . Obviously , in the past , owning a car was privilege and only rich people can afford it . In contrast , in today's world , there is a great opportunity for every individual to buy their own car because they have a good job and decent income . Furthermore , people can have more than one vehicle . I have to admit that my own opinion in this matter has profoundly influenced by my own experience . I got a job in a computer company , they gave me a really high salary , So I purchased my own car within one year of work . Additionally , I afforded some money for helping my father to buy his own car . This example clearly illustrates the fact that in the future there will be more vehicles than there are today .
    Secondly , people need cars to commute to their workplaces and offices . Evidently , people in the past were working near their home as farmers or simple jobs . Contrarily , people nowadays work far away from their residence , and owning a vehicle makes it convenient for them to commute to their workplaces daily . My own experience is a compelling of this . My workplace was far away 40 kilometers from my home . At first , I used to go by riding a bus , but that caused me to be nervous because I was always stuck in the traffic jam and arrived late to my work . As a result , I decided to buy my own car . Consequently , I felt more comfortable commuting to my office . If I had not bought my own vehicle , I would not have been able to feel convenient and I would not have been able to get rid of my problems with means of transportation. This example demonstrates that in the twenty years there will be more vehicles than there are today.
    In conclusion , I strongly believe that in the future there will be more cars than there are today . This is not because the availability of jobs makes it affordable, but also cars are necessary to commute to our directions.
