I loved it & actually saw it twice (once with my sister, other with my boyfriend lol). I don't know if I could compare the two movies necessarily, but the first one feels more like a classic and solid introduction to the core emotions and a strong foundation for the concepts that later get explored further in this sequel. I agree that it was easier to focus on the characters in the first because there was definitely a lot happening in this one. However, as far as what these new emotions end up doing...the main takeaway I found is the significance of balancing emotions & not suppressing them (i.e. depicted literally when anxiety bottles them all up and sends them away). We then saw the legitimately disastrous effects of suppressing all those majorly important and absolutely vital emotions for healthy functioning (sadness, anger, joy, disgust, fear). We absolutely NEED those. We saw how there is a time and place for these "new" emotions like anxiety but were given a clear demonstration of what occurs when they are allowed to run the show without our core foundation and structure. If we lose touch with those vital emotions and things are not balanced, we will completely lose ourselves...as we witnessed Riley behaving in ways completely unlike who she always was. ALSO, I found the avalanche of suppressed/discarded memories spilling forth (with the main emotions) into headquarters to help her reach a more balanced "sense of self" was so powerful. I love that we learned how ultimately, this sense of self is not stable or static because we are always constantly evolving and changing.
