  • Inside Out was one of Pixar's most accomplished films. Beloved by both fans and critics, Inside Out was just the latest notch on Pixar's already impressive belt. But when Inside Out 2 was announced it was quickly realied two of the main emotions would not be returning with their original Voice Actors. Why exactly did Inside Out 2 recast two main characters after a proven track record of success? Will fans of Inside Out notice the difference?

      this is why they used to cast people who just did voice acting. Animated films have always cost more to film that just pointing a camera, so it made sense to cut costs and cast people who definitely knew how to voice act, now they rely on star power and spend money for no reason.

    • @TheJ_G
      @TheJ_G 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +23

      @@Zectifinlol they don’t spend money on celebrities for no reason. Time and time and time and time and time again and again and again, celebrities have proven to influence a general audience and most films live and die by the whims of a general audiences interest. There are obviously exceptions but the vast majority of cases over the last several decades has shown that to be the case.
      If you want to blame anyone, don’t forget the general audience and the frustrating lack of support for projects that attempt to break out of this mold and the frustrating amount of support for projects that fit this mold.
      We are starting to see a decline in the influence of celebrities, for sure, but it’s still a tactic that has a net positive track record for now.

    I mean, for animation they should just cast top tier voice actors instead of Celebs anyway. You usually would get an even better voice performance (as it really requires a different skillset) for a fraction of the cost of a big 'Name' even if paying the voice actor on the highest level of what most voice actors earn and making it very rewarding for them. Nobody is going to watch Animated movies based on a celebrity name. I don't think they really even did that much before Robin Williams (which, yes was perfect in that instance) in Aladdin and then it seemed to build from there to where it's not just the occasional character voiced by a once in a lifetime charismatic personality like Robin William to having a movie voiced entirely by Celebs, inflating the cost of those movies and denying voice actors the chances to get those really big jobs in your industry.

    Don't get me wrong, no one could do what RW did in Aladdin, but in all honesty animation goes overboard with casting celebs to do work that any pro can do. As much as I loathe Disney decisions, I actually understand these. It's an expensive frivolity.

      Nah. Paige O'Hara could sing just like Jodi Benson. The thing what's missing from the recent voice actors is a man that helped make a new generations with Broadway Musical implemented in animation. The man is Howard Ashman. A guy that not only came up with the idea but chose real voice actresses from Broadways. And he also lectured them how to sing specific parts. Until you get it right,you had to repeat it over and over again. Now? They barely can sing(Emma Watson) or wants to highlight how they can sing instead of focusing how that character should feel at that moment(Halle Bailey) If he was still alive,Aladdin would have been different. All of his song he wrote for the movie was scrapped the moment he died. Some still somehow survived in the Musical version. So in other words what's missing today are talent AND passion for your work. Someone who care enough to control the project.

It’s part of why animation has lost some of its magic. I can’t watch Super Mario Bros without only hearing the famous faces behind the characters, and that’s just one instance. I hear Chris Pratt, not Mario. Seth Rohan instead of Donkey Kong. In Inside Out, I hear Lewis Black and not a separate character. Maybe, but what do you say to all the other countries that dub? The US voices DONT MATTER SH*T to us. Not even the songs. Im not saying that the US version wasnt good or wasnt excelent, but its just a percentage of the overall margin. Google says English makes up less than 20%. Sure still a lot, but more than 80 % gives A F if Amy Pholer or whatever does the US voice for the movie.

      @@PiratDunkelbart .... You do realize that means 30% IS domestic? The foreign market is literally EVERY other country grouped together.
      Here's the other English countries which comprise a fair share of the international gross of Frozen.
      - Australia
      - New Zealand
      - Hong Kong (shown in both English and Cantonese)
      - India (same as Hong Kong, but with various Indian languages)
      - United Kingdom
      - Nigeria and other formerly British African colonies
      Now take that into consideration and realize that the second largest market for Frozen, in Japan, was just over half the domestic share.
      The largest SINGLE income for Frozen was the American release.

      @@PiratDunkelbart This doesn't even factor in the fact that Japan, the second largest market, simultaneously showed both ENGLISH DUB (with Japanese subtitles) and a Japanese dub for Frozen.

    I think there’s at least two factors not mentioned.
    For Kaling, I think how genuinely dreadful Velma is has killed whatever marquee appeal she may have had. Regardless of how ideal she was for the role (personally, I think she was by far the weakest link in the original cast) there is an extent to which she may now be an albatross to the commercial prospects of any project she’s in because of how strong the anger is towards Velma.
    For Hader, his time doing Barry has established him as a much bigger talent than he was when he first played Fear. To say it differently, he went from being a cast performer on SNL to being a potential guest host of it, and that level of star power increase likely means a big pay raise, and ultimately may result in it just not making financial sense for Pixar, especially if they can get someone like Tony Hale to replace him (I mean, how can Buster Bluth not be Fear? It seems even more natural to me than Hader was, and also reflects the shifts in both their careers, as Hader’s rise parallels Hale seeing less success since Veep ended).
    A final thought- I think these changes can work well artistically, as the idea could be that as we age, the nature of our emotions change, so perhaps they can reflect that with the change in actors. Keeping Poehler as Joy is mandatory as she is the protagonist and we need some continuity as an audience, but all the secondary emotions (except for maybe Sadness) could evolve into new versions that are better performed by other performers, even if the originals were perfect for the original (and I find that statement dubious w respect to Kaling).

    • @MrRapmaster19
      @MrRapmaster19 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      Still, Inside Out 2 was developed and cast well before Velma's release, so I don't really think that plays a factor. Hader, though, I can very much see him just pricing out Disney given how much bigger he is now than he was in 2015.

    • @mrcritical6751
      @mrcritical6751 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@MrRapmaster19see I think Velma very much was a factor. Say what you will for Kaling as a comedian, she had enough pull to get Warner Bros to agree to an R rated iteration of one of their biggest children’s franchises and have her write, produce and star in it. Maybe she did feel like she was worth more than they were offering, when you get that kind of agreement with a major studio you would feel somewhat bigger

    Recasting actors in sequels because of budget, timing, PR, and/or creative/personal decisions on either side is absolutely nothing new. Look at Rachel in Batman Begins/The Dark Night, Genie in Aladdin/Return of Jafar, Mr. T's police officer character in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts, Abe Sapien in Hellboy, Rhodey in Iron Man, Evelyn in The Mummy/Dragon Emperor... The list goes on and on.

    • @chloemchll3774
      @chloemchll3774 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I mean, your answer proves it is very much a mixed bag. You have Rhodey in the MCU, where the change actually improved the character (same for recasting Ruffalo for Ed Norton- the MCU has generally done pretty well with recasts) and allowed for better chemistry/comedic timing between Rhodey and Tony. You have Rachel in the Nolan Batman movies, where the change feels so minimal that if an audience member didn’t know it happened just by watching the movies, it shouldn’t surprise anyone. And you have the case of Genie in Aladdin, where Robin Williams’ original performance quite frankly should have at least been nominated for the best supporting actor Oscar and where every attempt to recast it has been dreadful in comparison, whether we are talking the straight to VHS sequels or the live action remake, and resulted in nothing else in the franchise being even half as good as the original.
      It proves recasting can be done effectively, but you have to be very careful to not recast someone like Williams who basically WAS the character.
