    • @polbecca

      Yes, it's pronounced more like "Edin-bruh" than "Edin-bra". But as a small correction, which not many people even from here seem to know, is that people from Edinburgh are actually Edinborians, not "Edinburghers" or "Edinburgers".

    I found your channel a few weeks ago, I love it! You're so cute and fun. Funny, my husband's Arab, I'm Canadian (French-Italian origin) and I dunno always had a fascination for Scotland and Ireland. I've been listening to different videos of Gaelic pronunciation and I've noticed the "ch" that you call the cat hissing sound hehe, makes me think of those throat "r" they have in Arabic "kh" and "gh" that sounds like you're clearing something from your throat.
    Anyways, I really love the sound of Gaelic! It's really special. Keep up the good work 😊

    The first time I learnt the pronunciation of Milngavie & the second time I went to Glasgow, I was standing on Platform 8 at Glasgow Queen Street when I heard an announcement for the "9:52 Scotrail Service to Milgai". Looking at a map of the railway network I saw no station with this name, so being in possession of an SPT Roundabout ranger I got on the mystery train. It went west out of Glasgow, turning right everywhere except for Anniesland, & it ended up in Milngavie.

    Hi! I'm really glad I found your channel!
    I'm adopted and recently have done a few DNA tests that showed, very surprisingly, I am approximately 92% English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish 😯. Surprising because I always thought I am Eastern European (long story why). So, I want to learn about languages, cultures, history and all I can about these places and the people there.
    Funny, the correct pronunciation of the ch in Loch is the same as the Ch in my name. I have the hardest time trying to teach people how to say it. I usually tell people to clear their throat but I like your way of using the cat hiss! That will probably be easier for people to learn the correct way to say my name. Most people say it with a ch sound like in chair and it eventually it as a k sound.
    I have looked through your other videos and look forward to learning more about Scotland!

    As an American with heavy Scottish roots, (I apologize if I sounds like every American with Scottish heritage), but my family actually moved to the states around 1920, specifically the Appalachian area of America, and a lot of us here in the Appalachian mountains have a slight Scottish tinge to our accent because a lot of Scottish immigrants came here to the Appalachian mountains. my great grandparents were from Perthshire. So, for me, this video is extremely helpful. I thank you for helping me understand more about the pronunciation of the areas around Scotland. :)

    On the Beatles White album, Lennon has song with a line, "the Duchess of Kirkcaldy always smiling and arriving late for tea". He pronounces it correctly, probably because when he was young, he spent some of the summer each year with relatives in Edinburgh. And as Kirkcaldy is just over the Forth Bridge, he might have even been through it.

    I didn’t realize until recently that US TV & Movies are watched outside the US. I know you’ve done dialect, idiom, and phrases videos, but I wonder specifically, are there things Americans say that you recognize from shows, but still wrinkle your nose or struggle not to laugh when you hear? If you had to work with an American daily, are there any sayings or dialect differences you think would just continue to make you laugh or cringe?
    I ask because I went to a school here that had about 30% UK student enrollment. After two months living and working at the same small school one of my Irish friends aired all his annoyances (kindly, it was a really funny conversation) at things he said he’d never get used to us saying. The top of his list was that we call pants what we wear on the outside. He argued I should say trousers, I told him I could do my best to remember to say that for him, but we’ve literally never called them anything else, and as 1 citizen of a massive nation I don’t stand a chance of changing what we call them. It was a funny conversation, in part, because until then the only difference I noticed between our UK students and everyone else at the school was accent.

    Hey, do you know of any audiobooks that are narrated by someone in a Glaswegian or Scots accent? It's not that I'm trying to learn how to do the accent, it's that it's very relaxing to listen to (as weird as that sounds)--like auditory potpourri.

    • @aprilmcleod1714
      @aprilmcleod1714 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could always try and look for poems by Robert burns who have been narrated by someone who is Scottish (Robert burns is a Scottish poet if you don't know who that it, his poems are very relaxing to a lot of people) hope this helps :)

      +April McLeod A lot of the "Scottish" readers sound closer to London than Glasgow. Even my last trip to Edinburgh the tour guide was crazy English =(

    Loved the Dora the Explorer bit. Still chuckling. I spent ages practising Loch with a soft ch just so I could ask for a quaich at a scottish shop in Sydney and try and get the pronunciation half right. Probably still got it badly wrong but the shop owner seemed to know what I was after straight up.

    Hey Mosco Moon - just discovered you! I have a coworker who's face is EXACTLY like yours - she could be your American twin, it's crazy. The thing I love about both of you is your eyes - you both have very pretty, extremely kind looking "doe" eyes. It makes me feel comforted, haha. Anyway, I sent her a link of your show, curious to see if she agrees with me. Thank you for the fun videos! I have a Scottish coworker and I occasionally like to check out things like this because I want to learn more about him and his culture and not be an ignoramus (hopefully it makes him feel more welcome). He's from Glasgow I think :) Okey doke - coffee time!

    "Milngavie", "Islay", "Kirkcaldy" - the famous Gaelic phantom consonants! :P but I did get Edinburgh right. :) Now I get to make my fellow Yank whisky enthusiasts insane when I keep talking about "Eye-la" malts. And native linguistics is on my side!

    • @Tranxhead
      @Tranxhead 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doug Parkhurst In those words, it is just normal sound change where letters stop getting pronounced. A similar thing happened to the words calm, would, could and should as happened to Kirkcaldy.

    I just learned over this passed weekend (from my ancestry DNA test) that I descend from the Scots who came to Nova Scotia during the Highland Clearance in 1800-1825!
    I am adopted so I had no idea who my biological father was or where he was from. So far I have not found him but I have found my Great Great Grandparents on his side who were Scottish and they are from Dunnottar, Kincardineshire, Scotland!
    Thanks for posting the video's that you post! It's been so cool to just hear someone explain all the proper pronunciations!
    Nova Scotia actually means New Scotland and there are places all around here that the Scots named! Like "New Glasgow" haha which is about 30 minutes from me =^.^=
