I don't get how so many Americans mess up the pronunciation of shire when they have New Hampshire.

Americans pronounce every little letter in the name when we just say it better
Except when Brits say 'shire' by itself, they pronounce it as spelled, but when they say it as part of a county name, they slur it. It makes sense that Americans would not necessarily assume that New Hampshire is pronounced in the 'correct' way. British place names are a minefield for hyperforeignism.

@@jic1 Except that you do realise that you are talking about England here. Where English comes from. America is the foreign place with the foreign pronunciation. Americans keep saying the British pronunciation, but there isn't one. The way that Scotland, Wales and Ireland speak are as distinct from the English as the US and Australia.

Northern England seems to do that a lot as well though, I've noticed, since I moved up from London to Lincoln. Take the word, "Caravan", for instance: "CARAvan"- (southern- the right way), versus "CaraVAN"- (northern- UH-UH!) ❌

Anything with “Chester” at the end is Roman, such as Chester, Colchester, Dorchester
Yes this derives from the Latin "castrum" meaning a military camp or fort.
Often they ended up as -cester and are liable to be abbreviated when spoken. Like Towcester pronounced Toaster or Bicester pronounced Bister.
And caster i.e Lancaster, Doncaster...

There is no difference between posh and common people in terms of accents. The only reason the southern accent is known as posh is because historically, not many prominent posh people have lived north of London. Which is a big shame.

It's worth noting that there will be small nuances in pronunciation depending on a persons local accent and as you know, we have many accents over here lol
Okie-dokie! As a Londoner, I can't talk for every U.K. accent, only for a London one.
"Chichester", I'd pronounce as it's spelt- (that one, I think, is pretty self-explanatory: "Chi-chestuh").
"Exeter", I'd pronounce "Ex-e-uh"- (glottal 'T').
"Glasgow", I'd pronounce "Glarsgo".
"Gloucester", I'd pronounce "Glosstuh".
"Hereford" is "Heh-reh-f'd"- (although, in my accent, I'd drop the 'H' at the start, making it "'Eh-reh-f'd").
"Inverness" is "In-ver-ness"- (as if you're gunna say "nest", but no 'T').
"Leicester", I'd pronounce "Lesstuh".
"Lichfield" is as it's spelt- (LiCH-field).
"Peterborough", I'd pronounce "Pee-uh-bruh"- (there goes that old London glottal 'T' again in "Peter"!)
"Truro", I've never even heard of, but I would've probably pronounced that like "Churro".
"Wolverhampton", I'd pronounce "Wolver'ampton"- (losing the 'H').
"Worcester", I'd pronounce "Woosstuh"- (with the "oo" being more like the "oo" in "cook" than in "moon").
"Worcestershire", I'd pronounce "Woosstuhsheer".
These pronunciations come to ya from south of the Watford Gap- (even though I now live up in the Midlands!) 😂😂😂😂

Calling us 'Scots' is absolutely fine. Some of my fellow countrymen are, though, sensitive wee souls so if you want to wind them up just call them Scotch. The more nationalistic Scotch, especially, get all in a froth about this.

The A in Glasgow can be pronounced either way depending where you come from. Northerners and midlanders usually say glAsgow and southerners glAARsgow
true, southerners tend to make the ‘A’ an ‘AW’ sound so it sounds like ‘glAWWsgow’ where as we just say ‘glAHsgow’

She was right as in she had an RP accent so she wasn't wrongggg, but I would say wolver 'amp' ton not Wolverhampton etc. There are SO many regional British accents that only people an RP accent pronounce the place names like the Google lady :)

The answer to your question about the pronunciations is quite simple: Lots of invasions. So there are words from Latin (Roman invasion), Icelandic (Viking invasions), Dutch (more Viking invasions), Norway (more Viking invasions), Old English and German (Anglo-Saxon invasions), etc etc etc. Probably explains why the "English" were once so good at invading other countries - lots of experience.
I'd say Glasgow with the 'A' rather than with the 'AR'. Hereford is right and Inverness is right. This misses off Loughborough - that always confuses everyone not from the UK. And Slough.

GLARS-goh is definitely the accepted pronunciation in England, but I'm assuming Neknak Noo is Scottish. Is that right Neknak Noo? And are you from Glasgow itself?
Doug File I’m not, but my mother was, and various other family live there. I think it is GLAS-gow, with a short A & definitely no ‘R’ infiltrated in there - that’s mainly a characteristic of modern south eastern ‘estuary’ English I’d say, although south-eastern RP (received pronunciation) English says this kind of word with a long ‘A’, but no ‘R’ included, RP in its most refined form is sometimes called “cut glass” English. You can tell all sorts of things about people in the UK generally from how they say certain words, and not just the part of the country they come from.
I'm not actually. I'm in the Midlands. It's interesting though. My whole family would say 'Glars-gow' just as they would say 'barth', 'carstle', 'glarss' etc. I'm the only one who says everything as an 'A'. My neighbour who is from Essex has also picked up on I say 'A'. She has an 'AR' in all her words too. I'm not sure where I picked it up from. Apparently my grandfather did bit he died before I was born so I can't have learnt it from there.

@@WanderingRavens It's actually -cester, other variations are -chester and -caster, and the Romans used it to name the locations of their "castrums" (or "castri" I suppose, to be correct), which were their military forts or encampments.
Castra - a roman camp or fort, which becomes slurred over the years

My grandfather was mayor of Leicester....New York! In upstate NY it is pronounced Lester.

Hereford is pronounced exactly like Google. I was born there and we sometimes call it the Ford. 😊

You did pretty well, you got most of them between you. The one thing I've noticed with Americans is when they see Shire on the end of a name they pronounce it as Shire (which makes sense) but its nearly always pronounced Cher like the singer

Fun fact the word Sheriff comes from the English Shire Reeve, a lawman that worked within the Shire. Obviously you don't pronounce the words in full so Shire Reeve became Sheriff.
In general is it has 'ford' at the end it's more of a 'fuhd' and if it has a 'borough' at the end it's a 'bruh'.
Our places have been around for centuries, we've got lazy in that time!

Anywhere in England, ending in 'ton', or 'ham' (mostly the south and eastern regions of England) was established by the Saxons (Old English). Safe to say this includes counties ending in 'sex' too.
Ending in 'by' or 'ford', it was most likely established by the Vikings.
Knowing this, it can help you remember certain pronuciation patterns/exceptions.
As someone who performs frequently in Lichfield (and where i went to college) i find it awesome it was the first name to pop up

You are right about wolves. I grew up in a town called Wolverton. This was a town originally was a viking settlement. The founder was a bloke called Wolf. The town name comes from the words Wolf er ing ton, which means Wolfs county followers. A town nearby was named after the river crossing. Stony Stratford was originally named Stony Strata Ford, which means a stony, wide river Ford.
You should know Hereford. This is the town that George Washington's family hailed from before moving to America
And there are places called Worcester and Gloucester in the US. Sometimes these names in the US are phonetically converted to assure their original pronunciation, however, such as Redding in California, or Wooster in Ohio.

Gloucester County, Virginia. *His* father came from Norwich, Norfolk (norritch, norfuck) and was the last common ancestor of George Washington and Elizabeth Rex (aka Windsor, formerly Sax-coburg) II.
