As a lifelong Omaha and I appreciate you sharing one of our most wonderful attractions with the world. Thank you for highlighting our wonderful zoo and all it has to offer!
You fit an amazing amount into 19 minutes. I live 3 blocks from the zoo entrance and walk in it at least five days a week. The two main buildings you missed in your video were the Madagascar building with its several species of beautiful lemurs, and the fossa (looks like a cross between a cat and a dog) outdoors by it. (Madagascar is in a culdesac between Gorilla Valley and the aviary and is easy to miss.) You also missed the indoor jungle building, to the right of the main entrance, with its pygmy hippos, many species of monkeys, tapirs, macaws and other tropical birds, etc. And you somehow missed the two baby African elephants who were born in January. But you got most of the other highlights. The design of many of the exhibits is quite impressive -- I particularly like the Asian highlands, where it almost seems as if you really are on a mountainside in the Himalayas. I am very lucky to live close enough to Henry Doorly Zoo to visit almost every day, and it certainly should be the #1 attraction for most people visiting Omaha.
As a local person that has lived in omaha my whole life the zoo is always changing and the main priority’s are the animals and make sure that they are happy!💜
Yes that too but I think Offuit has one of the best Airshows in the country too. When it was happening, I showed up like clockwork just for low pass flybys.
I've loved going to the Henry Doorly my whole life. Used to work on staff when I was younger. It makes me sad how many people don't know how beautiful the zoo is, so I really hope this video spreads and intrigues animal lovers to come see the best zoo around!
I'm also a local and that zoo is a brutal one day trip you definitely need a couple days to enjoy all of it without getting too sore. It's like all Hills LOL. Also you're giving me a new appreciation for it because it's been awhile since I went with all the new exhibits all updated and once this heat dies down I'm so excited to get back
Love your video. This zoo is credited, they have to comply with a high standard to keep their credibility. The animals are their top priority at these places have to keep them happy and healthy and it shows. The exhibits are well designed and the cost to put in every little detail can top over 10 thousand dollars. I know a zoo owner, and it takes a ton of dedication to be a zoo keeper, zoo vet and lot's of knowledge to do what they do. Thank you for sharing.
My family always keeps a pass to this zoo its truly a great place to have around! Especially when you homeschool like me! They are constantly expanding and making things better for the animals!
Yeah, the gorillas make it on the news quite a bit. Namely for that one time a few years ago when one of them divebombed a window and cracked the glass. I actually helped build that swing you saw it playing on. It was for one of my friend’s eagle projects a few months ago. Scouts also gave me a really cool opportunity for an “overnight experience” where they gave us a sleeping bag and let us sleep anywhere in the aquarium. Falling asleep in the shark tunnel was honestly magical.
The omaha zoo is the only one I been too so when I found out it's the world's best I was kinda surprised I've also heard the San Diego one is the best tho which one would u consider better?
Yes so very close. The only unfortunate thing is that children love tapping on the glass. The glass has several panes so its very safe. However the bigger males get upset and can break one of the panes in frustration. That's the only thing I wish was that children wouldn't do that.
One of my favorite places, I have had a membership for 20+ years and we got quite a bit. It’s easy to run in and see a few attractions then head home or go to the IMAX. Thank you for doing a video on it.
As someone born and raised a local, I'm glad you had a great time at our zoo. I feel old as I say this, but I remember when the desert dome was being made. When they had the structure all set up, they let the public in to see what exhibits they had. And in the entry, they had a model of what it was going to be like, it was awesome. I remeber in the nocturnal exhibit area, my brother and I had an unfortunate encounter with this old lady. We had costumes on, because it was halloween. I wanted to scare my brother, who used the elevator to go down. I tried to hide in a near pitch black shadow using my black cape to cover me. I jumped out at them, only scaring this lady who came down with the rest of my group. Then in the swamp area, my brother saw someone and tapped their shoulder to scare them, thinking it was me. Guess who it was, THE SAME LADY I SCARED! Also, little upsidedown jelly, what are ya doing? I've never seen them float like that, what are ya doin dude?
I was there in ‘75 when the tiger escaped it’s enclosure. Literally at the enclosure and saw the whole thing. My brother and I were lucky we were standing at the opposite end of the pit. That tiger mauled a young girl from Bellevue.
I've spent more time at this zoo than I have anywhere else outside of home. I know several of the zookeepers and have sold coral to some of the top people in the aquarium that now proudly sit in displays. The absolute BEST zoo out there
It really is. I've been to the San Diego Zoo, Bronx Zoo, Philadelphia Zoo, Fort Worth Zoo, all zoo's that are highly regarded. Doorly is the best of all those.
my dad and brother work in construction and are always working on the new exhibits for the zoo they always show me pictures of all the new stuff they are adding I'm proud of their hard work paying off 😄
Omaha Represent! But in all honesty it's cool to see a video like this. I know they try very hard to make it the best zoo in the world. And in my totally unbiased opinion, it is.
I hope you had a chance to visit the Lied Jungle while you were in the zoo.....as far as I know the worlds largest indoor rainforest. It's amazing in there and has alot of free roaming animals about. Spider monkeys, macaws, bats, miscellaneous birds which I can't quite recall names of, i believe cappuchin monkeys as well. Also, numerous exhibit animals such as pygmy tapirs, otters, massive fish, crocodilians, and the list goes on and on.
It has been several years sense I have been there. Until my wife came down with health issues we were there every year with kids or grandkids. I knew they were doing a lot of work residing the displays. From the changes I have seen in your video I think I will try to get there this year. There is a drive through zoo about 20 miles west that Ithink it is still open. Also worth the drive.
@@cdpgeorge Trust when you say that. I delivered steel to Henry Doorly in the dead of winter and if anyone knows the surrounding area, the hills are slippery and deadly. WHen I delivered steel there I had to go to the back of the zoo, not through the front gates. Talk about clutching my pearls with a white knuckled grip.
It definitely is one of the top zoo's. The constant construction has really put a damper on things. The swamp is really awesome. One really cool zoo is the Como Zoo in Minnesota. It's not very big but well done with awesome exhibits. The St Louis Zoo also is pretty awesome. San Diego Zoo was beautiful but wasn't near as cool as Omaha.
It's a great adventure and fun for the kids 😀decent price for all we spent around 200.00 usd 4 2 adults 3 kids. T shirts and toys and food 😋everyone had fun
I also have to say... To really appreciate the WHOLE zoo, you might want to consider touring it over a few days. You don't realize it while walking but it is huge and has gotten much bigger since I was a child, so if you want to really enjoy all the attractions, especially the larger ones like the savannah area, the big cat area, the indoor jungle and the desert, it's hard to do it all in one day (especially in oppressive Omaha summers). Please do come back; I'm sure it'll be even better. Maybe they will rebuild the polar bear exhibit!
Just so you know, our experience with the zoo was fantastic. The best zoo I’ve ever been to. And I’ve been to the zoos in San Diego, Fort Worth, Bronx and Philadelphia. All of them considered world class. Omaha’s Zoo easily ranks with them. 😀
@@JoeandNicsRoadTrip I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It's unfortunate how much it flies under the radar, but I always encourage family and friends to stop by when they are visiting. It's truly a wonderful place to be
What it do, what it do Spoda, we went to the Zoo!! I grew up in Omaha and I love this zoo. By the way what you called a bush baby is 100% not a bush baby from what I can tell it is an African Springhare. There might have been a bush baby in the exhibit and you just didn't see it, because there are sometimes multiple animals in one exhibit. So you have to make sure that you're looking at the right one when you say, this is a "animal name here".
