    Hi there !
    Most of you wanted to see more footage about the whole trip, so we did ! Let me know how you like it !
    Due a last minute canceled trip to China, we decided to visit Greece and try some abandoned cruise ferries, ocean rigs and other decommissioned ships.
    It turned out to be a real adventure and nothing went as planned. On the ship we have an unexpected encounter.

    Wow!
    Memories!
    I was on that ship in the early 80ies when it was the "Nils Holgersson" starting at Travemünde.
    Until Min 25 i thought i know the Design of the carpets and chairs in the theater.
    But then the map with the routes...
    Baaaaang!
    I was sure i have yet been there.
    Amazing.
    I am ten again ;-)
    Thanks a lot.

    Not to be a wet blanket but you were in dangers which you had no clew of. One of the biggest killers on ships is entry to enclosed spaces. You have to understand that ships are very different then other structures. They are made of metal and metal rusts. The places you entered might have been closed for ages and not ventilated at all. For this reason the oxygen inside might have got depleted, meaning that you could have got asphyxiated with no one to help you. People end up dying as they don’t see the threat. I am pretty sure you encountered a lot of strange odors, next time you do such an adventure you take and oxygen analyser (although that will not give you other toxic gases). You were lucky you got caught on the passenger ferry and didn’t make it to the bulkier and the LNG, those would have had a hell load of hidden dangers, Cardona residues will remain until they are fiscally removed. Good luck for next adventures but I suggest that you ask for advice to minimize your risks.

    • @bobbyrayofthefamilysmith24
      @bobbyrayofthefamilysmith24 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What danger is on the bulk ship?

    • @georgesaguna
      @georgesaguna 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      bobby ray of the family smith there is a whole IB code about it if you want to get informed. You could have residue of cargos which could deteriorate the air in the hold, the hold itself after being closed for a long time together with the rust could have depleted oxygen. You could have infections bactiria in the bilges and silt. The code of safe working practice has a lot of information for such entries and on each vessel you have a risk assessment for entry to confined spaces. Just to give some information.

    It's really interesting that it still has the maps for the ship's route in and around Sweden and northern Europe back when the ship was named Nils-Holgersson, since it hasn't been trafficking those waters since 1985. She went to Australia in 1985 for quite some time before coming to Greece in 1994, and is now named MS Theofilos. Interesting stuff guys, but I think security should've been expected to be honest.

      It was named "Mytilene" actually, "Theofilos" was another ship of the same line.
      These ships are being salvaged, they are not abandoned. There's a shipyard across the bay in the industrial area next to the oil refinery. The guard is likely there to deter from theft of potential equipment on it and maybe also for liability reasons.

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SergiosKolios no, it's not the Mytilene, it sailed around Japan under a Japanese flag and never went in the Baltic sea, and would have no reason to have TT-Line maps of routes in the Baltic sea in it. This is the Theofilos and the Mytilene is its sister ship, but with another background.

    • @SwitchAndLever
      @SwitchAndLever 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ExploringtheUnbeatenPath it's because they're actively being scrapped and material salvaged. If they were just abandoned there wouldn't be quite obviously. Paying a guard 24/7 is small potatoes compared to what thieves could easily make away with from a ship like that.

    One of them I had traveled with a friend who happened to have about 15 grams of weed with him.
    It was night and winter and there were few passengers, so he suggested me to smoke together a joint on the deck.
    I agreed and my friend came out to roll it. After a few minutes I went out and found him sitting on one of the benches ready to cry.
    I asked him what happened and he answered...
    "Dude... The fishes took my weed..."
    He opened the bag and the wind do the rest...

    The last Name of the ship was Theofilos, when it was last in service for NEL lines.
    In 22:42 you can see a painting of Nils Holgersson, a boy flying on a goose in the upper left corner of the painting, which is related to the ships first name "Nils Holgersson" when the ship was used by german TT-Lines for transfer from Germany to Sweden (Travemünde to Trelleborg, therefore TT-Line). It was build in 1975.

      The ships may be decommissioned and scheduled for scrapping but they are not abandoned and they are still property of a company. If something happened to a trespasser the company could be held liable, and there are many dangers aboard ships in disrepair. I don't know but there may even be a legal requirement for the presence of a guard or member of crew on board large ships at all times when at sea.

    the Capsized "SAOS" one was Arsinoi, she was built at the same shipyard my boss had the (sadly) cancelled "Sea Venture" Cruise Ship purchased from (that being "Kamitsis Machine Yards, Perama")

      @Pedro DLR Sadly not, I only know the other capsized ferry from the intro (Mediterranean Sky of 1953) and the two ferries laid up next to Arsinoi, the Penelope A of 1972 and the Theofilos of 1974

    Prepare better for and maritime adventures next time!!! You need floating aid, compass, radio in floating bag (cheapo Baofeng will do), smartphone in floating bag, clothing that is impervious to water like roll-up rubber trousers and another paddle as a spare propulsion if the first one fails. Water in smaller bottles in different places. And let somebody know where you are going and arrange a rendez-vous or form of scheduled communication so he alarms the authority if you are lost. Also before making a way, get a chart (or make one on a piece of paper) and write down your expected trip by plotting down the course (make a vector for your target, the stream and you will see which way you must drive to) - you wasted some energy by just heading for your target, you should have had expected the current and drive partially against it so your way over ground would be shorter. Also expect that the wind will affect you. And from my experience, avoid going when the tide current goes the other direction than the wind - result will be rolling waves that easily overturn you. For a night experience, bring a white all-round light on a bar that sticks to the sky. And please stay safe, use common sense.

    Someone else made the comment of bribing the guards with booze and maybe a little cash. Hell, they might even give you a guided tour of all the ships and invite you to dinner when they realize your not there to vandalize or steal! No names or faces would have to be exposed. Would have sucked to wake up in the morning to a flat kayak though! Cheers!

    Guys please be more careful - one day you're going to get in real shit with the authorities, or you're going injure yourself really badly which would suck for all of us.
    It's great that you go beyond where most people normally do, but don't unnecessarily put yourself in danger.
    I really mean it.

    Another heads up, there's an old saying amongst sailors and that is cotton kills. There's no quicker way to drown than to fall overboard in a pair of blue jeans and a cotton t-shirt.
    If you're going to paddle out to mothballed ships in a small inflatable boat then at least dress appropriately in case you wind up in the water.

    This is the region I lived most of my life. i feel strange that i can see inside this ship's that i could only see from the beach. Just for the information the submerged ship at the beginning is at this point from 2004,in addittion the reason you saw all those navy ships is because at Salamina island (the place you started with the canoe) is the biggest navy base of Greece.
