    The MV Astoria is the longest running Ocean Liner in history btw. Since 1948 she's sailed the seven seas. During her seven decades of service she has passed through several owners and sailed under the names Stockholm, Völkerfreundschaft, Volker, Fridtjof Nansen, Italia I, Italia Prima, Valtur Prima, Caribe, Athena, and Azores before beginning service as Astoria in March 2016. It's good to see her again and in quite good shape. Thanks again Bob! Such a fun look inside a pretty historical ship with a checkered past. Also not to be confused with the tragic demise of the vessel MS Estonia in 1994. Another very interesting maritime incident.

    Thank you for this unique experience. I would like to add that this ship is a great example of the incredible craftsmanship and quality of Swedish engineering. The ship was ordered in 1944, and launched on 9 September 1946, as Stockholm was built by the famous Götaverken in Gothenburg for the Swedish America Line (SAL). It is worth knowing that during the 1930s the Swedish Götaverken was the world's biggest shipyard by launched gross registered tonnage. It was founded in 1841 and went bankrupt in 1989.
    So the Astoria (Original name Stockholm) is not only important to the world as the oldest sailing cruise ship in the world it is also very important as it's the last ship still sailing hailing from the famous SAL line, Swedish American Line. So this ship is an important part of Swedish history. Sadly there aren't a lot of TH-camrs covering the SAL ships and their colorful history, perhaps this fantastic video could also contribute to this cause.

    • @cardy4ever
      @cardy4ever ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would also like to add that the original SAL paint scheme was incredibly beautiful and would look great today as well. At some point after the delivery of the , SAL decided to abandon the traditional black hull colour and their entire fleet was repainted with white hulls

    At 75 years old and being in cold lay-up, what it would take to restore this ship as well as bring it up to code for passenger use is not probable. When a ship is in cold lay-up with no maintenance, the equipment will continue to corrode (note the water damage and rust) which is why it probably hasn't been able to sell. Just like an old car, you can continue to pump money into it yet things will still continue to break down. As a cruise enthusiast (14 cruises and counting) , I found this video to be very interesting and appreciate the work you did to get onboard and explore a ship that thrilled hundreds of thousands of passengers over her time!

      While it is sad to be scrapped honestly at her age and utility it's not worth keeping her in service, it's too dangerous. Also few want to pay to keep her up as a floating museum.. i.e. even the SS United States isn't doing well in that state. Better to have a video like this to remember her by and she can either rest as an artificial reef, or help to build new buildings

    So tragic what happened with CMV. My favorite, I think, was Astor.

    Dat aangebroken zakje nootjes op de lessenaar (dashboard) in de stuurhut is echt creepy, alsof de roerganger net eventjes weg is gegaan om even een kop koffie te halen en hij elk moment weer terug kan komen...
    Geweldige video, ik heb de Astoria al heel vaak zien liggen op haar 'rustplaats' in R'dam en altijd aleens aan boord willen rond snuffelen, jullie hebben dit een beetje mogelijk gemaakt, top, bedankt!

    As a Swede, I truly adore this ship (but she looked a lot better during her days as M/S Stockholm), we failed to save the M/S Kungsholm back in 2015 but I would love if we could restore Astoria to M/S Stockholm and let her stay in Gothenburg

    I saw that ship when it anchored in San Carlos Nuevo Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico a few years ago. It was docked in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico for quite a while. I think it did just one cruise from Mazatlan to Puerto Peñasco, then back to Mazatlan. It was interesting to see the ex-MS Stockholm that collided with the Andrea Doria, but in more modern form.

  • @thetelegothika5327

    This is definitely one of those ships which its scrapping will be mourned in decades to come. We tend to only think about saving ships from a century ago yet we then scrap the particular vessels from our era which in a hundred years time could well become equally as historically important. No one thought to save the ocean liners from the 1900s and that's regretted a hundred years later. And that cycle is likely to repeat here. By 2099 there could well be very few examples of mid-20th to mid 21st century ships left.
    This ship is the longest serving liner in the world and was also involved in a serious collision with a famous liner, so lots of reasons for saving this specific ship.

    Fun fact! THAT ship is the old M/S Stockholm which collided with s/s Andrea doria in 1956 which resulted in andrea sinking and 52 people lost their lives.
    m/v Astoria is sold too The Roundtable LLC, Puerto Rico for scrapping..
    This video is awesome. This is prob the last time we see this old ship :(
