  • Jesse Ilhardt uses her experience as the co-founder and executive director of VOCEL, a teacher, and a mother, to discuss the extraordinary capacity of young children, the power of play and relationships, and the importance of investing in the adults who nurture young children's development. Not only does Jesse emphasize the power of play, but also the importance of parental involvement in child play. She shows us how we can play with our children, and why we should.
Jesse Ilhardt co-founded VOCEL, a nationally recognized, research-informed, and community-driven early learning organization for parents, children, and educators, in 2013, and was named the Executive Director in 2021. Prior to co-founding VOCEL, she worked for six years as a pre-K teacher and teacher coach at Teach For America. Across these roles, she has combined intellectual horsepower, creativity, and business acumen to develop innovative early education programs, lead high-impact teams, and cultivate champions. She is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and has presented at Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child, the Austin Early Childhood Symposium, the Collaboration for Early Childhood Symposium, and the Illinois Association for Infant Mental Health Spring Seminar Series. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

As a single parent who’s a child at heart, I had a blast playing with my daughter when she was little. We played Barbie’s, read books, sang songs and laughed a lot. I enjoyed those childhood years as much as she did. Today she’s a successful 28 year old who’s smart and witty and she’s my best friend. Enjoy your children and don’t push them too hard.

@@ElaineMooreone yes same. I am an only child and my parents always made me play by myself because they were busy or wanted their own time. There have been a few more factors but now I'm not good at talking to people and I'm an introvert even though I don't want to be. I feel the need to not be introverted and tell people how I feel but I don't know how to. This has had a huge influence on my ability to make friends and my mental health.

My father never played with me. Only yelled and beat me. I did the opposite with my son, lots of love, walks, bike rides, etc. Grew up and doesn't talk to me, says he needs his space. Can't win either way

Implementing play in teaching is a great teaching strategy for children. Play can provide a meaningful context for children and motivate them to engage in learning. Play should be part of the school's teaching.

I can’t get enough of my two sons. We do everything we can together and We have a great time! I recall growing up my father was always working and we never got to know each other I’m still affected deep down by it. It was up to me to change things for generations to come.

“When we feel anxious… we often revert to fact-based teaching”
This ^ explains a lot of my social interactions in a school setting, where I would bond over studying but I do not really care about studying I just didn’t know how to play with others (out of fear of the unknown) 😢

God loves you and takes care of you. The biggest loss that a person loses in this life is to live and die while he does not know God or His Messenger, Muhammad, the last of the prophets and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions, from intelligence. Before you believe in something or not, study it and try to understand it well, and then you have the choice. By reading the Noble Qur’an with translation and trying to understand it before time runs out
