At 74, I am among the apparently few of my age range that does not support the monarchy. No matter; we'll all be dead soon. My age range were supporters of the monarchy when we were in the 18-24 age range so it's not a matter of 'becoming more royalist as you get older'. I didn't support the monarchy then and I don't now. But, when I was young, I risked getting thumped for expressing that view.
The monarchy's days are numbered

When I was younger I was ambivalent to the idea of a monarchy. They didn't seem to do too much harm, and the media were adept at keeping the grossest misdemeanors from the hoi-polloi. I was in India when Lady Di died, and the mock grief shown was nauseating, considering the previous bile heaped on her by those same 'journalists' during the divorce from Charlie.
Since learning more about Randy Andy's frolics with Epstein, Meghan Markle's treatment from such prestigious rags as the Daily Mail, and Prince Philips bigotry, my indifference has changed to bafflement as to why the British public still tolerates the aristocratic elite at all. Seemingly unaccountable, and untaxed, drains on the public purse are an unacceptable anachronism at a time of austerity, food banks, zero-hours contracts, slashing of social programmes and vast accumulation of wealth by a few, who have their fortunes by accidents of birth...and very little actual merit.

I am 74 and the monarchy holds no illusions or value to me. I also know plenty that are, apparently, filled with wonder and enthusiasm for this strangely odd family.
It does also seem that many of the supplicants are comparatively well heeled and I suppose that that helps.
If you are worried about money and your ability to keep warm and healthy is a concern then it seems more unlikely that you feel that monarchy is anything other than another form of subjugation abused by power to hold the poor in their place. For “King and country” has been the rallying call that has sacrificed the youth of the nation on battlefields throughout both world and centuries
Just watched the coronation and seen the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces declare their loyalty to the Crown and Not to a poison dwarf like President Putin or an imbecile like Biden.
The Armed Forces are the people who matter when FREEDOM is at stake.

The thing is 10 years ago the younger royals (especially Harry and William) were coming into their own. They made the monarchy seem exciting and relevant to younger people. From there we got the fairytale weddings of first William finding his bride and then Harry. I think the peak of this was seeing both princes happy and the rise of the ‘fab four’. It had so much promise and then the fairytale was shattered when ‘old royal ways’ started to rear its ugly head in both the scandals, briefings against and press treatment of Meghan Markle. The nail in the coffin for the younger generation (although it didn’t seem to affect the views much of the older generations) was Prince Andrew. Not only what he was alleged to have done but the treatment and lack of scrutiny compared to the bile they throw at Meghan. Say what you want about the younger generation but they are less forgiving. Especially if you don’t seem to deserve it.

I have asked 3 in the last week why the former queen had herself any any heirs excepted from 160+ laws that they found inconvienent, being effectively above the law, and how is that an example of 'leading by example'?

This general logic is why I'd like to see that graph of royal approval broken down into more useful age groups, the 25-49 one in particular seems like it probably gives a poor representation of the views at either end of that 25 year span.

I am of a similar age, and lived in the UK when I was younger, I think a good number of our generation were of a similar view back then, but it was difficult to express it, The Internet, social media etc will be their downfall I think.

I find that Meghan is someone who wanted to reap the benefits of a white supremacist institution because she thought that she would be treated like a white woman despite her mixed race skin, but then left after she found that white supremacy wouldn’t play ball.
Harry and Meghan’s objection to the Royal Family is not based on anti-imperialist principles, but rather based on the fact they weren’t able to participate in a colonialist institution in the manner they would like.
Unlike what the pig-headed wankstains at the gammon press will tell you, those two don’t actually want to abolish the monarchy, they just want to reform it in a way that suits them.

I liked him since reading an article that he would go out in public in disguise so he could just try live a normal life. Made me realise that the media makes it this thing we should all dream to want, but it's all just a facade.

I most definitely did not watch the part where us, the plebs, were expected to swear allegiance to such an anachronistic group of people. When I was 11 years old I said out with theMonarchy. Now at age 59 I still say out with the Monarchy.
I really think the treatment of Harry and Meghan was the nail in the coffin for a lot of people. A lot of my friends are in mixed race relationships or of mixed heritage themselves. I noticed a lot of diversity in the coronation ceremony, and references to the commonwealth, but it feels like it’s intended to be inclusive, while reminding us that he is our benevolent overlord, but an overlord all the same.
Like when they passed him the sword and spoke of being “just and merciful” - it’s a parody. It’s totally farcical!

This last year brought to mind a query I had after the passing of the Queen- what did she ever do for the little people? Couldn't think of a time she so much as spoke up in support of those at the bottom.

I'm 62. When I was 12, I became an anti-monarchist and an anti-theist. When I was 24, I learnt what capitalism was and I became an anti-capitalist. By the time I was 30, I had read Orwell, Russell, Shelley, Paine, Voltaire, Asimov, Sagan, Darwin, Dawkins, Hawking, Leakey and the woefully little-read Robert Tressell. As I got older I didn't mellow, I became more radical in my search for that which can be demonstrated ie the truth. The truth is, if we want a fairer world we should ditch Monarchy.

I may have misunderstood the last speaker, but I cannot agree. The idea of the population swearing allegiance to the King, personally, is something I find utterly grotesque.
I don't think he suggested it wasn't. I think the point is it's an invitation, previously it was presumed without even bothering to ask us plebs. I guess that counts as progress for an anachronism that's beyond parody.

I agree but idealism is to be applauded. You may rationalise for your children but you should also idealise for what they may achieve. My personal opinion is that we should applaud those trying to do the same for society. I actually think you aren't too far from that view but life is tough and gets in the way. A friend of mine finished her pro monarchy argument by saying "well, I couldn't do their job", as if the position of monarch is SO difficult that it desperately needs to be done by someone. It's not as if they're lavatory cleaners.

Anyone notice that YouGov data is strange? Just think… Rather than having 4 age groups of 18-24, 25-49, 50-64, 65+, the chart would look quite different if the age groups were formed differently: 18-24, 25-31, 31-37, 38-50, 50+. Then the data would show that majority have declined - except for only one group as an outlier.
I'm 66, and I've always been opposed to the monarchy for all the reasons Ash mentions and more. Perhaps it's no coincidence that these days I also interact less and less with people in my age group. As Tony Benn once said, "Like my father, I grow more left-wing as I grow older."

I'm basically indifferent to the Royals, they exist and have done throughout my life, I respect the pageantry, the history, and the continuity that they represent. Against that, we the creation of a homogenizing society, a leveling down rather than a leveling up, be you rich, famous, talented, or outspoken, sooner or later someone will crawl out of the cracks and seek to pull you down for no other reason than you exist. The grey, damp, miserable weather pretty much sums up brexitland on this day.
Allegedly the oath of fealty for us plebs didn't come from Charles but from the Archbishop of Canterbury; his mate Jonathan Dimbleby chipped in to say Charles would find the concept "abhorrent" and suggested it came from the Archbishop, who when asked, declined (in his words) "to take credit" for the idea.
It was notable that this attempt to throw the Archbishop under the bus by proxy only occurred after the idea had been widely derided, however.
Not a good look.
I am pleased to admit that I am in the 21% of my age range that no longer supports a monarchical system, as I was in the minority that voted Remain. I’ve heard it said that C3 should be ‘given a chance.’ At what, precisely? I’ve also heard that the coronation marks the beginning of a new era. Recalling my studies for my History Masters, I’m pretty sure we’ve already done the 14th. Century.
If Charlie really wants to modernize the monarchy he can start by turning over the Duchy of Cornwall and the Duchy of Lancaster to the people that actually live there.

The big problem with loving the royals is the Same critique you can pull at loving celebrities. Except, celebs actually do earn the public’s hearts to some extent by acting, and being in our favourite media content. The royals don’t even do that. And even then, our obsession with celebs is still sort of thought of as a bit problematic.
Celebrities also aren’t funded by tax payers and don’t expect the public to pledge allegiance, force you to endure massive unnecessary fanfare. I know some celebrities are harder to escape than others but it’s up to you if you want to play a part in funding their lifestyle.

I've been out and about this morning and you really wouldn't know there was anything significant ( in national terms) going on. The town was busy( for a rainy day) it didn't feel like millions were huddled round their TVs.

Marx did analyse the origins of capitalist exploitation and the role that slavery played in the development of the capitalist mode of production. He argued that slavery was a crucial component of the early capitalist economy and that it helped to create the conditions for the emergence of modern racism and the exploitation of non-white populations. The glamour of celebrity in general has suffered massively due to the internet and especially social media. The Royal Family aren't immune to this. As a cold purveyor of the data however the royal family contribute about £1.7bn a year to the British economy so if you don't like them, you might as well just ignore them and enjoy the economic benefits
