    Considering that Ultra Magnus' toy is just the same as Optimus Prime's but with a different trailer, I wonder how different the franchise would have been if rather than being their own character, Ultra Magnus was just an upgraded form of Optimus.

    • @JLvatron
      @JLvatron 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      If that were the case, then Prime would not have died in the movie, but would have been heavily wounded in stasis.
      Springer would have brought him on board their shuttle, and after HotRod made friends with the Junkions, they would have rebuilt Prime as Ultra-Magnus.
      The twist would be that HotRod would still open the Matrix, destroy Unicron, and become Rodimus Prime.
      Optimus, now as Ultra-Magnus, would have been happy to support the new leader. This would further increase the rivalry between Galvatron and Magnus (new Megatron & Optimus).

    The Junkions likely have tech and methods specifically designed to preserve and repair, since they themselves are made of junk, yet they're the most resilient and durable robots when it comes to damage. On another note, I liked how they did it; many overlook that the Transformers were at max power as they were probably utilizing stored up energon to fight the war. It showed the level of power they were fighting with when the Sweeps shot him and got a delayed explosion. It took multiple shots from multiple Sweeps to subdue him because Magnus was at full power!

    • @torrancemoore6152
      @torrancemoore6152 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think it's less of a full power bit and more of an ultra magnus being powerful in his own right. Even without a matrix supercharging him, Magnus is a duplicate of prime under that armor and he's at least tough enough to routinely fight galvatron, even if he didn't win all the time.

      I also think that living in an environment where every repair was an improvisation has made the Junkeons the secret best at cybertronian medicine in the galaxy. When they wanted Optimus Prime revived, they tried taking him to Wrek-Garr. In the IDW comics, Wrek-Garr had a gizmo that would have brought Sideswipe back from the brink of death.. if it hadn't been destroyed in battle.

    This was never something that bothered me all that much from the movie. I did kinda just assume that the difference in injuries where ultra magnus was essentially dismantled limb from limb while optimus sustained severe injuries to his internals where the components most vital to his life force were grievously damaged. Similar to how a person can survive losing limbs but cut their heart out or sever their spinal cord and it’s curtains.
    Still I appreciate the level of research and explanation that went into this video. Nobody puts together transformers discussion videos quite like rowdy rodimus primal. I’ve noticed that not all G1 fans are folks born in the 70s or 80s (like me). There are some who were born in the late nineties who are early into adulthood who have developed an appreciation for G1 and for them if they’re newer fans videos like this are invaluable as they can help explain some things that may not have been clear.

    While the storyboards show Ultra Magnus being torn to pieces by the Sweeps, the script specifically only says that "his libs are separated from his body and scattered in the distance," (annoyingly, the script refers to this as him being "drawn and quartered", which is factually incorrect since that's a totally different method of execution, but I digress) and while the storyboards depict the Matrix falling into Galvatron's hand amidst a shower of Magnus's parts, only the Matrix is mentioned in the script. It even mentions that Magnus is still screaming after his limbs are ripped off. So going by the script, Magnus's torso should've still been mostly intact once the Sweeps were done with him. Assuming that as the intent, Magnus then probably shut down/went into Stasis Lock due to the damage, but since the damage wasn't fatal, the Junkions were easily able to fix him after simply reattaching his separated limbs (this idea is even retained in the movie, as the Junkions are shown just kinda slotting his arms and legs back into place on his intact torso, which doesn't really make sense if his body was torn apart like in the storyboards or blown up like the movie itself shows. Also it makes sense that the Junkions would be able to do this, since earlier in the movie one of them is shown losing their arm after being knocked down by Arcee and they just casually reattach it.) I guess when creating the storyboards they decided the scene in the script wasn't brutal enough and cranked it up a few notches, only for them to realise during the animation process that showing Magnus get dismembered like that wasn't suitable for the target audience and censored it so he gets blown up instead, but since that's not what was intended originally and at that point it was far too late to go back and rewrite the script again, the subsequent scenes in the movie just act like he was dismembered relatively cleanly, as originally intended in the script.
    By the way, Magnus's reconstruction is very different in the script. It mentions that they put his body through an "amazing assembly line" where they essentially Frankenstein him back together with a combination of his own parts and random bits of junk, which I guess that scene was either cut for time or due to some other limitations.
    Personally, I think Magnus's "death" scene in the storyboards is the best, not because of Magnus being brutally ripped apart, but because Magnus actually realised that the Matrix wasn't going to open and knew that he was about to die, so in one last act of defiance he shot Galvatron and actually injured him. I think it's more fitting for Magnus, who specifically calls himself a soldier, to go down fighting like that rather than just relying on the power of the Matrix to save them and dying like a fool in the movie.

    I agree with you, his spark chamber must have been undamaged. The Junkions probably can detect if the spark is intact still prior to repairing him. Plus the armor Ultra Magnus wears is to protect the inner robot hence adding more protection for the spark chamber than he would have without it.
    As for the unanimated scene where he is torn apart would have been better I think than blowing up. It would've made more sense where the armor gives him more protection he shouldn't have blown up that easily and by blowing up the damage could've been worse than what they decided it was. Being torn apart would have made better sense.

    This really doesn’t need to be a question, especially in comparison to Optimus prime. We already have established cannon of Optimus prime having his body cut up with his gun arm becoming a automated cannon, his feet put into storage, his head in a jar, and the rest of his body turned into Gatorbot. So absent some key component being destroyed or irreparably damaged transformers can survive body tearing injuries.
    Let’s add to that the fact the Magnus is actual a smaller bot inside a suit of armor made by his trailer so key systems are even more protected than average.

    At the scene where Prime handed over the Matrix but failed, causing the Matrix to fall, Hod Rod caught it first before Magnus (music for that exact scene changed a bit, whuch was the first hint).
    The second hint quickly came right after when Hot Rod "raised" the Matrix after saving it (an aura of light was seen) before he gave it to Magnus.

      Also the reason why the cover thing Optimus used in the s3 finale was white, so more would buy the toy.

    It might have been a bit intense, but I think it would be better if Ultra Magnus was simply torn apart instead of blown up. This way there’s no question about his spark chamber being in tact. With the explosion, an argument could be made that because the explosion came from his torso area, his spark chamber could have been seriously damaged, to the point that maybe his spark would be extinguished.

    I just bought WFC Kingdom Ultra Magnus, and as my first Ultra Magnus toy, it's pretty good, and he looks great next to my SS86 figures. I might also buy Wreck-Gar from Walmart soon to recreate the very scenes this video is covering.
    And what's even better is that I bought him at Gamestop for $45, which can qualify me for the Gamestop promotion raffle, where I have a chance to win that $700 engineered Optimus Prime.

    This is a great and working retcon of a fan theory as to why Optimus Prime died, but Ultra Magnus didn't...but the real reasons are - *1)* The movie was to sell some toys and remove others from sale. *2)* The writers and animators overlooked many glaring plot holes all the time, because "It's just for kids." (Remember Cyclonus ..and his Armada:? lol)

    I have a big theory on which decepticon became the "Armada" of Cyclonus, and how he was then changed by Unicron into the 3rd Sweep...thus vanishing from the rest of the movie... But the sad truth is...the writers and animators were lazy buggers and messed up a lot.

  • @Kain40

    I just assume it was because he was largely still intact other than his limbs being separated, so it was just a matter of putting him back together.
    Magnus couldn't open the matrix because it hadn't chosen him or deemed him worthy. You can see it chose Rodimus the moment he touched it when he caught it earlier.

    When I was younger I couldn’t understand why ultra Magnus survived later on as I watch the beast wars I kind of thought well maybe that’s how they did it…… Ultra Magnus “spark” was not destroyed just his body just like the characters in beastwars could be blown apart if they’re “spark” is still intact then they can be rebuilt

    I always noticed as a kid, when Magnus put the Matrix in he threw it in without much care, and then readjusted it. Not sure if that was an animation error or on purpose. But I always saw it as him not caring as much as Hotrod who looked at it with Awe.

    Ultra Magnus never changed to gray. When the G1 gang "died" the spark that charged their bodies, making the metal act more like "flesh" giving it flexibility and durability would leave the body. Ultra Magnus was still charged with his spark as was Optimus when he was disassembled, his color never went gray.
    Great video.

    Great video as always! The only thing I would take issue with is the "white Optimus" piece. Yes, his toy was definitely the Powered Convoy recolor, but he was never depicted this way in The Transformers cartoon. This definitely played in to other continuities but it's not as if a white Optimus ran out of him on Junk saying "haha, better luck next time, Decepti-goons!", though actually.. I'd like to see what that might look like, lol.
    A long time ago on one of the TF forums, I know someone had explained Magnus' survival vs Prime's death as the difference between a car battery being roughly disconnected (Magnus) and a car battery being punctured and mangled. I think you did a good job explaining it with the BW terms (hey, if the shoe fits), but for another angle on how it might work, that one always stuck out in my mind.
