I liked Magnus more than I liked Prime because I was first introduced to Prime on the small screen. Ultra Magnus, however, first came to me on the big screen, larger than life, with a big-time, charismatic voice and commanding presence. Sure, he came across as impatient and was taken down easily but he displayed a great tactical mind and a never-quit attitude, and was a true survivor. When I read the comic adaptation of the movie and saw that his armor had merely pulled apart, which is why he was able to be resurrected, I knew that he was something special and he has been my favorite Transformer (next to Prowl). Long live Ultra Magnus!
I want to say that Dion was rebuilt by Alfa Trion to become Magnus. Since we don't know what happened to Dion. Magnus and Prime always seemed close and upon Prime's death he referred to Magnus as "Old Friend". Orion and Dion were best friends before they were rebuilt so that's the story I go with.
Ohh, so Ultra Magnus has actually been shown in some comics to look like white Optimus Prime, and those visible robot parts have been just an armour? So _that's_ why there are so many white Optimus Prime figures marketed as "Ultra Magnus"! It all makes sense now! Now I also understand why there has been an Optimus Prime figure in the promotional images of the upcoming Fantastic Model's Margh figure, which is supposed to represent Ultra Magnus, as well as some Magnus's body parts around it. (IDW Magnus was a lot of fun in my view too...also, 'Yay!' for including the LilFormers gag at 7.57, yes...?!).
I'm a big fan of Ultra Magnus. Even have the G1 toy although the Cab and Trailer are from two different releases. The cab being a later release that lacked chrome, rubber wheels, and the windows.
Ultra Magnus took me a long time to warm up to. Now I love the character. At first it bothered me he was a truck similar to Optimus. As a kid I remember saying he is no Optimus. Image my surprise to hear Megatron say the same thing. By the time he made his debut in Transformers prime I loved him. Loved the character and even liked how he was a truck. Lol I wish his fight with Megatron wasn't so one sided. I think many fans dreamed of an Ulta Magnus vs Megatron battle. I know I did. He always held his own against Galvatron. So I think he should have given Megatron a bit more of a challenge. But that's just me.

I have watched this video a couple times now and each time has been bittersweeetl he is my very favorite Transformer of all time (in his G1 and Prime manifestations, though I don't mind animated) and he is the one character in the series I actually admired. Thank you for honoring him with a profile. Hope the new series does him justice.
Fun Fact: Ultra Magnus was originally going to be in Transformers: Dark of the Movie as the Autobot traitor, but due to people going to be angry at Micheal Bay about this he was soon changed to Sentinel Prime
I always been a fan of Ultra Magnus It really did catch me off guard when I was young on how he didn’t end up being the leader at the end of the film but as I got older and got more into the lore and such I honestly see him fitting the bill of a soldier, just like he told Prime. He’s a soldier you can rely on, and when things get dire you can always depend on big ol shoulder stacks to have your back. That and I just love his original Diaclone concept of just being Convoy but with armor I really do wish Hasbro would do that more often instead of the weird configurations he gets where he’s just one big solid build Especially now with the Power of the Primes line, it could have been a perfect opportunity. I just find it cool haha I think the closest we got to that was Overload from Armada who shared a bit of a resemblance to Ultra Then again I just now saw the war for Cybertron Ultra Magnus as I typed this so heck yeah Great video as always btw!
Well you're in luck, the next ultra magnus toy that's coming out will be like the original, a white optimus figure who's trailer becomes a suit of armor that he can combine with.
"Shoulder Stacks!" 😂 I'm sorry that didn't become his official nickname! I can hear Gears or Sideswipe wising off, "Hey, Captain Shoulder Stacks is back! Fun's over!" 😂😂😂
Comet ranger definitely excited for the entire War for Cybertron line, they all look rad and if I’m correct some target-masters are coming along with the line too
it's sad that Jack Angel passed away last year. (the time of this comment is Oct 20, 2022. previous day was one year after his decease) I have Kingdom toy of Magnus as well as Earthrise Smokescreen. I'll consider them as mementos for his memory.
As good as Jack Angel is in doing Ultra Magnus. To me no matter what for me Robert Stack's voice will always be Ultra Magnus to me. If I read a comic featuring Ultra Magnus I still imagine it is Robert Stack's voice for Ultra Magnus.
My Favorite Transformer will always be Optimus Prime, but Ultra Magnus is second with Shockwave and Jetfire... Wingblade is aproacing them... But well I will always think Ultra Magnus was a better leader than Rodimus. Hotrod also rather to be a hotheaded warrior instead of a Prime, he is way cooler that way in my opinion. That aside... I HATED the IDW version which stated Magnus dies in the great war, and he was Minimus Ambus, wearing his armor... This is why he lost the power of the Primes contest, a lot of people thought they would be voting for Minimus Ambus and not Magnus. I refused to get the hasbro version of that toy, instead I got the PC -17 Core Magnus upgrade and made him the original Ultra Magnus. I was also sad he didn´t win the Power of The Primes Contest... he deseves to be a Prime.. much more than Optimus Primal, Primal had the Creation Matrix, to reformat in Beast machines, plus he got mutated from Optimus Prime´s Spark. But Magnus never got to be a Prime. I hope someday Hasbro-Takara will make him a Prime! Imagine a Prime Version of Ultra Magnus... MAGNIMUS PRIME!!! That would be so awsome!!!
I remember as a kid growing up in the 00's who learned about G1 through the internet I was always kind of bummed out that despite all the white optimus-es they never made any armours to work with them. I'm glad they're re-visiting that idea! Also that ending clip is gold.
This video was amazing. Ultra magnus is my favorite transformer of all time. I appreciate how much attention to detail you put into ultra magnus. I am surprised to how much of ultra magnus was unknown to me. Thanks -Evan Tung
There are people who are so efficient and potent as second to the alpha male/top dog. When the opportunity to be the pinnacle has offered then accepted, somehow the same person becomes so-so. The burden to be expected as the most reliable, all eyes on the leader, and having the final say on tough decisions can take its toll. But as second-in-command that person is at its best. G1 Ultra Magnus has reminded me we can be leaders without the need to be top-ranked and compromise one's sanity and comfort. Service, courage, and honor precede power.
I like the idea that Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus share the same body and basic alt mode(not including the trailer) just like Ironhide and Retchet do, as well as Prowl with Streak(Blue Streak) and Smokescreen, etc...but without being related. And I like that they have different trailers which are used differently. In my personal canon U.M. looks the way he does because of his trailer/armor.
I always consider Ultra Magnus to be Optimus Prime brother, and in a matter of fact a better character than Optimus, I wish it could be use more in the cartoons, but without being a repaint
RodimusPrimal The hasbro Transformers toys have really stepped up in the last few yrs! They are really looking nice! Possibly all of the custom figures being sold at decent prices has had them up their game?
I loved Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus, especially because it included Minimus Ambus. The Siege toy also looks really good, i'm gonna have to get that one.
I really enjoy ultra magnus. I would find it fun to see him having to lead a team of rebellous rule bending bots. That could lead to great dramatic and comedic potential. A comic miniseries or maybe a subplot in a cartoon. Maybe the main plot would have optimus prime on earth but every few episodes could show ultra magnus on cybertron.
With another pass at the story, I think you could REALLY nail all this together into a cohesive character. Orion Pax given an Optimus Prime body by Alpha Trion and he's given the Matrix, because Pax was a brilliant leader. Magnum as Orion Pax's brother, and Dion as Pax's best friend - with both dying, Alpha Trion chooses to save Prime's brother, and rebuilds Magnum into a white Optimus Prime body, and uses Dion to build the Magnus armor. Where Optimus is the great leader, gifted with the Matrix and the title of Prime, Magnus is the powerful warrior, gifted with the Magnus Hammer, and title of Magnus, which denotes him as champion and guardian or whatever. So Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus are truly brothers. One the might commander, and one the mighty champion and protector. Adapt the idea of the Magnus Armor getting passed down as something Alpha Trion does every time he anoints a new Magnus. It's not the same armor, but Ultra Magnus' new body and armor are based on his predecessor, Delta Magnus - a previous legendary hero (who is probably still secretly kicking around without his armor, calling himself Magna Convoy). That would explain why even when he gains command of Autobot City/Metroplex, and becomes the supreme leader of the Autobots, Ultra Magnus ultimately never becomes the battlefield leader who is directly in charge the way Optimus is - he was very wise and a brilliant warrior, but he simply was never the great leader of the two brothers. Even after gaining supreme command, he knows his strengths, and allows Rodimus Prime to control the Autobots directly in battle. And when Optimus returns, Optimus returns to battlefield command, with Magnus always backing him up as his muscle, and offering council to Optimus. So Ultra Magnus would be like the Merlin to Optimus' Prime's King Arthur - you know the wizard COULD be in charge, if he wanted to be, but he recognizes that this king is the one with the heroic leadership and tactical brilliance that is needed to lead the kingdom to glory and prosperity. If you want to include Optimus and Magnus having the ability to combine (and why the hell not?), make it so that the two brothers were reforged by Alpha Trion using two halves of a spark from like....Prima. So now they're BOTH the reincarnation of Prima, and together they can fully access that power. Also, let's say Dion WAS secretly Prima (Perhaps unknowingly. Maybe he was depowered and amnesiac, since he no longer carried the Marix). (Compare their designs. Just saying, Dion and Prima look EXTREMELY similar...) When Dion dies, his body doesn't just get reforged to become the Magnus Armor - his spark also becomes part of Ultra Magnus himself in the process of building his new white inner body. Parts of Dion/Prima's spark was used to repair Magnum's broken spark. And since Prima was the original Matrix bearer who the Matrix was made from, when Optimus and Ultra Magnus combine, Prima's spark and the Matrix reconnect and reactivate Prima's true power - and it's like their best friend Dion(Prima) has returned to life through them, to grant them his godlike strength. A G1-style version of Omega Prime. I think that would pretty much do it. I think that would streamline most of everything about Ultra Magnus into a single cohesive version of the character. Did I miss anything?
This was quite informational Roddy!! Dang, you pretty much covered his WHOLE timeline. I very deeply feel that he most certainly is or "was" DION. I would love to catch up with you in the future to tell and explain to you why. Thanks for your continued hard work, and I hope the baby is transforming just fine!!
Instead of becoming a unique character of his own, Ultra Magnus could have very easily become a powered-up Optimus Prime instead. Considering that's ultimately what became of Prime anyway with his Powermaster form. Prime could have become quite damaged from his battle with Megatron resulting in the upgrade. That said, Ultra Magnus became a pretty good character in his own right.
To be honest, it's good that Ultra Magnus is second in command. After all, he's a capable soldier & field commander. Not to mention, his humility is a direct opposite to Starscream.
"Springer... You and arcee order the pizza! Perceptor, tell blaster to radio prime for refreshments, tell him if he is bringing guests be sure they bring a bottle!" "what about me, magnus?? I can help, I can help. what about me??" "blurr, you can help me fold the napkins!"
I'm re-watching your stuff, as you suggested last night. This one might be due for an update, with Siege and Earthrise (the head) footage, and some new toy releases. Or not, up to you. This is still great 5 years later.
This is an awesome video. Great info. Was never aware that Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus came from the same toy. Have been talking all kinds of smack about how Hasbro making the Blue/White Optimus and calling him Ultra Magnus. But with this video now I know why that is. It still sucks that Ultra Magnus is Optimus Prime just colored differently and with the added armor. Wish Ultra Magnus was it's own but I guess that's the industry. Thank you again Rodimus Primal. You always have the best info when it comes to Transformers. Glad that I found and follow your channel. On a side note, can't wait till Bumble Bee Movie. Till all are one. Transform and Roll Out.
I absolutely loved my UM. I made a coffin for my Optimus and had UM be the new leader. I had my Gobot Res-Q be Ratchet who built a prototype clone, hence the white color, and made UM as a new leader. My mom molded a Matrix from foil for UM. I then had him disable Megatron (he had loose parts anyway). I then had my Super GoBots Cy-Kill imprison Megatron for kicks and become the new Decepticon leader. Yeah, I had some involved stories with my play time. Later, I played it as Prime's brain module was put into my Powermaster Toy and Thunderwing killed both Cy-Kill and Megatron, becoming the new Decepticon leader. As for my old Optimus toy? Nucleon Zombie. And UM became second-in-command.
Wow, well done RP on my boy UM time line! You pretty much covered/ nailed everything from Diaclone/G1 to Siege. Speaking of Siege UM, I can't wait to have that toy in my hand. As a huge white Magnus robot cab wearing an armor fan and with 32 years in the waiting, finally Hasbro delivers another armor UM!
I was just watching the movie and aside from prime the autobot deaths on the shuttle hurt the most I loved all of them. I gravitated to Magnus, Hot Rod, and Springer since my childhood heroes died
Of the Autobots introduced in the 1986 movie (well, to us Western people), Ultra Magnus has always been my favorite. He's the reluctant leader of the Autobots who did his best to keep Optimus's wishes, but he was just not destined to carry tge Matrix. At least he protected his friends from Galvatron before being destroyed by him. That's the reason I love him, because, like Magnus, I prefer taking orders to giving them (and I don't think anyone should lose their mind over these words of mine, because some of us are just not natural born leaders), and his bravery and self-sacrifice are just things that make you look up to Magnus.
I think I’m that one twat that actually kind of prefers the white Optimus element of Ultra Magnus (G1 toy cab, Classics, and Kingdom are just like hella great imo). I like the full form, but I think exploring the existence of his true form in story media and why he had an outer, super robot form would be hella interesting. Could be a bit like Pyro from IDW, or maybe something to explore with the body type link between Prime and Magnus as brothers or something similar to Animated or RID01.
Ultra Magnus is probably my equal second favourite Transformer after Prime (tied with Grimlock) and apart from Prime I consider the most noble of Transformers. I think we can all agree he would've made a much better Autobot leader than Rodimus right?
I'm enjoying all your transformer retrospectives & can't wait for more. my favorite version of Ultra Magnus is G1 , but Robots in Disguise is a close 2nd. With the Robots in Disguise series there's one I always wondered. That show had Autobots, Decepticons, & Predacons, but why didn't it have Maximals?
I love how you mention about his birthday , because I remember watching a episode when I was a kid and in between the episode they used to highlight a Transformer . and you word it the same as the highlight :) anyway great channel mate .
Our worlds are in danger! To save them and the galaxy we must find the four Cyber Planet Keys before the Decepticons can use them for evil. It is our mission. Hot Shot! Jetfire! Vector Prime! Landmine! Scattorshot! Optimus Prime! Transform and roll out!
THe UK stories were the best, that's where Ultra really shined, and he took on Galvatron when it was obvious he was hopelessly overmatched. The later versions are just such weak water in comparison.
The original Diaclone colored toy has now even been repurposed as a new character called "Delta Magnus." They've even made a more modern figure of the character.
I always saw him as a very capable second in command who's disciplined, strong and capable of getting the job done. I dunno why so manu iterations of him treated him like a scapegoat to glorify the other main characters.
Especially in Animated he pretty much just stood around and waited to assist the autobots against those police bots

Ultra Magnus is like a brother to Optimus. He's an old friend of the prime.
Fun Fact: Ultra Magnus was originally going to be in Transformers: Dark of the Movie as the Autobot traitor, but due to people going to be angry at Micheal Bay about this he was soon changed to Sentinel Prime
I always been a fan of Ultra Magnus
It really did catch me off guard when I was young on how he didn’t end up being the leader at the end of the film but as I got older and got more into the lore and such I honestly see him fitting the bill of a soldier, just like he told Prime.
He’s a soldier you can rely on, and when things get dire you can always depend on big ol shoulder stacks to have your back.
That and I just love his original Diaclone concept of just being Convoy but with armor
I really do wish Hasbro would do that more often instead of the weird configurations he gets where he’s just one big solid build
Especially now with the Power of the Primes line, it could have been a perfect opportunity.
I just find it cool haha I think the closest we got to that was Overload from Armada who shared a bit of a resemblance to Ultra
Then again I just now saw the war for Cybertron Ultra Magnus as I typed this so heck yeah
Great video as always btw!
Fun's over!" 😂😂😂
Comet ranger definitely excited for the entire War for Cybertron line, they all look rad and if I’m correct some target-masters are coming along with the line too
Captain Fantastic I forgot exactly who I heard it from but that’s what I been referring big blue as for the longest time haha
it's sad that Jack Angel passed away last year.
(the time of this comment is Oct 20, 2022. previous day was one year after his decease)
I have Kingdom toy of Magnus as well as Earthrise Smokescreen.
I'll consider them as mementos for his memory.
Ultra Magnus is one of my favourite Transformers.
But I do like Ultra Magnus he's one of my favorite Autobots
Everyone loves Big Man Magnus
As good as Jack Angel is in doing Ultra Magnus. To me no matter what for me Robert Stack's voice will always be Ultra Magnus to me. If I read a comic featuring Ultra Magnus I still imagine it is Robert Stack's voice for Ultra Magnus.
DUDE I LOVED THE COMMERCIAL FOR THE TOY YOU ADDED IN. I SO REMEMBER THAT LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY
Magnus is one tough, and wise 'Bot. Woe to any 'Con that gets him ticked off.
I had an Ultra Magnus figure when I was a kid. This video of yours does him justice. Good work! 🤖💙💙❤❤
One of my favorite Transformers ever! Such an underrated character!
You made me can't wait for that leader class magnus from WFC siege line
That's part of the update.
RodimusPrimal The hasbro Transformers toys have really stepped up in the last few yrs! They are really looking nice!
Possibly all of the custom figures being sold at decent prices has had them up their game?
@@RodimusPrimal are you gonna buy the Ultra Magnus
@@DanzoSrife well better than *cough* cyberverse line i get the target audience are kids but come on even RID line is still acceptable
They really should have planned out Magnus to be the next prime. He's leagues above Rodimus
I love how IDW takes all these minor nuances and tidbits of Ultra Magnus and turn them all into actual personality quirks in the comics
I loved Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus, especially because it included Minimus Ambus. The Siege toy also looks really good, i'm gonna have to get that one.
I definitely want the Seige toy. It looks great minus the battle damage.
Ultra Magnus is awesome! I would have loved to see some time with him using the Matrix and being a Prime..... but a man can dream.
I loved the show and the toys. I’m almost 40.
I wish in season 4 of generation 1 Optimus Prime was able to reunite with Elita One!!!
Makes me wish that the pseudo-season 5 was an actual season, themed around Cybertron… for more character backstories.
Always love your remastered videos, they have so much better audio than before
Thanks! I put just as much effort into them as making the original. I'm glad you enjoyed them!
Agreed. The additional content definitely adds to the video as well.
BTW, had to resubscribe .
Just saying, Dion and Prima look EXTREMELY similar...)
When Dion dies, his body doesn't just get reforged to become the Magnus Armor - his spark also becomes part of Ultra Magnus himself in the process of building his new white inner body.
I love Ultra Magnus. I like Rodimus Prime, but Ultra Magnus has always been my favorite. To me he was the closest to Optimus Prime.
hyped to get the commander class
My favorite Transformer. Understated bravery and nobility.
Awesome video about one of the best Transformers ever.
I'd give Ultra Magnus a compliment, but he can't deal with that right now.
Rest in peace Jack Angel
Am I the only that wanted to see Ultra Magnus become a prime?
I quite enjoyed this. Great video!
"Open dammit!"
He's doing great. Spits up on occasion (completely normal) but he's very alert and always hungry. I believe he was Dion as well, or maybe in part.
I like how Blitzwing was the only one who had enough sense to get out of the way of a semi truck
I would make an Ultra Magnus joke...
But I can't deal with that now
Instead of becoming a unique character of his own, Ultra Magnus could have very easily become a powered-up Optimus Prime instead.
Perceptor, tell blaster to radio prime for refreshments, tell him if he is bringing guests be sure they bring a bottle!"
"what about me, magnus?? I can help, I can help. what about me??"
"blurr, you can help me fold the napkins!"
Lol
Need a video of the retrospective of triple changers. I love to see Springer, Broadside and Octane in a video.
They are on my list of videos to make!
Ultra Magnus is better than Rodimus prime
Edit: in my opinion *_JTC 2021_*
Not true by a long shot
Thanks Remy! I really want that Magnus too. He'll look awesome next to my POTP Rodimus Prime.
Bulkhead: Ultra Magnus...it’s an honor!
Ultra Magnus: It’s an honor “sir”!
I honestly loved Ultra magnus as Blue and white Optimus prime. I love the colors
I was just watching the movie and aside from prime the autobot deaths on the shuttle hurt the most I loved all of them. I gravitated to Magnus, Hot Rod, and Springer since my childhood heroes died
the best part of the transformers animated ultra magus is that his voice actor was doing a spot-on impression of robert stack as well.
lavafoxx that was Michael Ironside
He's a great field Commander and Warrior for sure. While I am a bigger Rodimus Prime fan, Ultra Magnus deserves a lot of credit too.
He is the bot that introduced me to the word "Dammit"
I'm going to have to check morenofnyour retrospectives. This was really good, and a lot I didnt know.
Fantastic! That quote at the end is my fav Magnus quote!
Ultra Magnus is my favorite transformer. I enjoyed this video. Starscream nxt plz.
Finally you did a retrospective on one of my favorite characters in all of transformers
Believe it or not, this is a remaster of a previous video. It's much better than before.
Cool I wish I had seen the original
You still can. The link is in the description. It's unlisted but you can still watch it!
I had an Ultra Magnus radio head growing up.
Ultra mangnus is my favorite transformer
I cant wait for that new Ultra Magnus to come out! Also really excited for hound and ironhide. Great video as always Rodimus! 👍
I never knew jack angel the guy who voiced astrotrain took over the voice of ultra Magnus after the movie.
Its a fact I know I need to cover a lot more as I cover a lot of characters.
@@RodimusPrimal Ultra Magnus is like Zero From Mega Man X.
Ultra Magnus. The Prime we deserved.
THe UK stories were the best, that's where Ultra really shined, and he took on Galvatron when it was obvious he was hopelessly overmatched. The later versions are just such weak water in comparison.
Thank you for producing this.
The original Diaclone colored toy has now even been repurposed as a new character called "Delta Magnus." They've even made a more modern figure of the character.
