Speaking as a retired US Air Force Airmen, the big difference in the American system is that
1. There are contracts of 4 or 6 years you can choose from. At the end of that contract about around 3 year mark and 5 year mark, the US military will ask you if you want to re-enlist for another 4 or 6 years or if you want to get out. This happens every time your contract is coming to an end. Totaling 20 years.
2. If you do choose to get out before 20 years, they provide free education, health benefits if you qualify for disability even if it’s 30%, and special loans for veterans.
3. If you choose to stay in you can continue working and renewing your contract for 20 years after which you can retire with full benefits.
So, an 18 year old can serve for 20 years and retire at the age of 38. If they choose to retire! Never does the us military just kick out 75% of their personnel.
However there is a caveat, you can always be kicked out for breaking the law (murder, theft, arson) Military law is different than civilian law. You can always be rejected for re-enlistment if you keep breaking smaller laws (showing bad behavior, not doing your job, not passing test required for your job, etc). But that amount never equates to 75% of people getting kick out or not retained.
The ridiculousness is exactly how you said it “India is trying to weaken its own military.”

We had recruitment like the USA, where a person can enter service for 17 years. Now the Government is discouraging it. In India, the ruling dispensation is selling "Tour of Duty" concept as not short term rotation of soldiers to forward area or conflict zone, but joining army for 4 years. The general who suggested tour of duty to the Indian Government have written that his suggestion and the Government's implementation have no match. This general's book is now stopped from publishing.
Still US veterans are suffering from homelessness, PTSD,truma etc. Do we want same situation in India.

As an Agniveer I want to share some point to the next generation who want to join as an Agniveer.
Our annual leave is only 30 days and there is no tt(traveling time )for us . I m from Manipur and I have posted in gujrat . So it takes 3 days to reach my home by train and total 6 days . If I take 15 days leave then I could stay only 8-9 days at home and annual 18 days I stay with my family. The point is 18 days leave is enough for a soldier who is equally doing all the things which are doing by a regular soldier . Because after getting 80 - 90 days leave, a regular sailor always used to say it's not enough. So you can see the difference between 18 days and 90 days annual leave. And you should also know about the salary. We don't have any allowances like Dareness allowance . We are also risking our life like a regular soldier then why don't we have DA . Is there is no value of our like . And it's a shame that we are not getting respect like a regular soldier in outside or inside the defence also . So I strongly demand to the govt to take back this scheme. It is not only good for the youth generation and also for our country .

The same or similar leave and the compensations afforded to the previous batch? Caveat being that the 4 years service period still remains in place with a 25% chance of being retained?

Lets assume there 2 soldiers, A is permanent and B is agniveer and there is a operation going of confronting the terrorist or catching the smuggler, on whom would you have more confidence of catching the terrorist or smuggler. Also If soldier B knows that he is not going to be permanent then would he give his 100%.
In terms of corporate employee agniveer is a notice period employee, and you know how they work.

The main reason for the higher average age of PBOR in Indian Army is that one can become a Subedar Major only through promotion and while taking that promotion the age of any individual crosses 40.In other countries these promotions happen quickly and are also less as compared to Indian Army.
Most important damage to the defence forces as a result of Agniveer after a few years is going to be that our forces will be totally devoid of regular soldiers who are the basic strength of the forces .

i have served Indian Navy. From 1986 to 2001. Done 5 years study 1986 to 1990. Than after 5 yrars working on Ship at many responsibulities . On 11th year cleared charge board certificate to handle 40000 HP of engineering eqyipment ( Main engine , Generator , pump , steering , HVAC etc) . To run the big ship you need around 10 such engineers . After working for 15 years took quit Navy in 2001. So Navy is full od technical equipment and need a goid length of Experiance & Knowledge

I was in US army, my brother was also in US army. There are only one kind of soldiers. Everyone has contract with Military for 4-6 years depending upon what will you do in military. Me and my brother did college degrees thru military scholarship, now my children’s education is also covered with military scholarship. If you have Drug related charges, then you can not get many veterans benefits. Veterans can get house loan for 0% down payment but you need to generate some income. You need to learn life long skills that can generate some income for you. Most people who go homeless are from infantry who did not learn skills get job after military.

The troop deficit is a huge problem faced by CAPF. People only talk about the defense forces, but nobody talks about the border guarding forces like BSF, ITBP, etc.
The battalions never have enough manpower, so a single soldier's duty stretches to 6 hours patrolling 3-4 Km of the border area. They can cut the recruitment for the defense forces, but the numbers for BSF need to be increased so that soldiers have easier duties and can go home regularly.

The government divides the security forces in two groups. First is a martyr and non martyr in the name of the economy.
As an IAF officer's daughter who has seen the life, I totally agree that 4 years of short term service is neither helpful for the individuals signing up, nor is it useful for the armed forces. Its obvious that the agniveerz wont develop the loyalty towards organization and the country in such short period especially when they are aware that they are NOT THE SAME as regular full term/ 20 yrs service personnel. You are right, Akash, its better to continue with the 20 years service programme. This so called 'Masterstroke' has not been well thought. For the people who knowingly sign up for a life of hardship and chamces of death during service, its a matter of COMPLETE DISRESPECT AND DISREGARD TO them and their familes. No wonder, most millenials are not interested in the armed forces and are running behind corporate jobs in the country or abroad.
What about the armed forces funding? Have you seen the majority of the budget on armed forces is going for salary n pension n hence there is very less budget left for upgrading the artillery and war machines that is crucial when your next door enemy like China is upgrading at a pro level! Without the latest combat machines our army will be at higher risk in front of a well armed neighbour. A good balance of regular well trained army, buffer force with four year training and modern artillery that they can use is important .
In an ideal case scenario it would be great to make everyone permanent army man but is it practical for our country n army budget? Many countries have Agniveer like schemes for decades not has worked for them. Youth who are not selected get a good amount when they leave and as they are still young they can use it to study further or start a business. Army will also give them skill certificates which can be beneficial. They will be recruited also into other security forces.
But why Govt applied this scheme on armed forces only??
This can be applied on other govt jobs also...
Govt must not compromise with armed forces in any case as they are the protector of our country even they sacrifice their lives in order to protect us so govt must take responsibility to take care of their families and agniveer scheme is disrespect of armed forces

warfare equipments are very expensive and Indian military equipments have become very old n in desperate need of modernisation. For modernisation, a lot of money is required. But 54% of defence budget goes to salary n pensions. It is expected to rise further. Hence there isn’t much money to modernise.
If our neighbour was only Pakistan then it wouldn’t be a problem as our equipments match in ability. But we have another neighbour China which has been constantly n vehemently increasing n modernising their weaponary. Military facilities are being built right next to our borders. Constant pressure on Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh shows that they are eying Chickens neck corridor to cut off North east from India! Indian weapons is currently no match to China is numbers or modernisation. India needs to build its own weapons like China did. Can’t rely on just purchasing from west or Russia. Huge funds are needed and India being a low income country is struggling with that. Hence Indian Army has to make such major shifts to catch up n defend ourselves from that huge threat! Yes, there will be compromises that will be needed. Military’s main job is to protect us from that threat. They have to take steps that can help them do so. They can’t wait for India to become a middle income country n then start to modernise weapons once we have the money. It might be too late!!
