Fun fact: if you start a game on 50% difficulty, land on an uninhabited planet, and just hold spacebar for a couple of hours to skip 50 years - the coalition will dominate dominators without you. They will kill Blazer, they will be sending tons of ships to attack Terron but i don't think his stats allow him to be brought down by conventional weaponry, and Keller will launch invasions, get his ass handed to him, and continually jump away into hyperspace. If you do the same thing on 200% difficulty - the system you're in will be completely captured within 10 years and you will get killed by an orbital strike. That's the kind of simulation this game does.

In my opinion the best part about this game is warm comfy feeling, like soviet comedies and cartoons. Jokes, references to 90-00 tv-advertises, movies, books that obviously foreigner will not understand. Game doesnt have dark edgy humour and stuff like that, which I really appreciate. By the way, the most beloved text quest in this game for russians is obviously the Jail. Its insanely good, fun and deep in terms of gameplay possibilities.
It's a sort of bright-future game, even despite the actually pretty dark stuff happening rather often and lots of comedic mishaps. It carries the spirit of Russian sci-fi, in a way - gives you that image of a better future among the stars, where things aren't an idyll, but traversing the galactic expanse sure is still fun and adventurous. Like Star Trek but with emphasis on a galaxy already living, and living in the galaxy, as opposed to only exploration and weird encounters.
Cramming this many genres into one game sounds like something a high schooler would come up with. And I love that someone managed to pull it off... ... kind of
The RTS aspect of the game sucked. variety/balance is weak, pathfinding is bad, opponents cheat, etc. Like Mandalore said. The text adventure has some weak points (bad gameplay at times), but is overall pretty good, or at least bearable. All the rest of the game (really the main part of the game) is quite perfect though. this is a 10/10 game. Porobably one of the best non-story single player games made (at least for me)
As one review of the first Space Rangers game noted (paraphrasing from Russian from memory): "Where some developers delicately try to study and learn from cult sci-fi games, shows, books and movies in a clean lab environment, these guys went in dirty rubber boots with a bucket and plucked every cool and unique idea to add to their stew... and it worked brilliantly."
as a Russian gamedev, thinking back on this legendary game makes me so proud, and so sad - because today neither Russian nor any devs seem to be able to do anything like this. Too concerned with graphics, public opinion, modern-consumer-simplicity and marketability. Can’t blame them ofc, I feel the weight of the industry myself, and a man must eat. Still I think more devs should try to reach for the sky, and this game is there to remind us what is possible, thanks for bringing it back to our minds Mandalore!
I guess it's up to us to be the change we want to be. Perhaps in a few years there may be openings to make masterworks once again, not crappy mobile games and online games-as-a-disservice.
I know Owlcat are Belarussian but they don't seem too concerned about those things, and they have succeded. Also, while Atomic Heart isn't the deepest game in mechanics, it stil, is more complex than the Bioshock series it was inspired by.

I feel like they are always janky and incredibly ambitious/innovative. You end up with a misaligned but interesting/memorable experience. Better than a factory produced dime a dozen 3A at least.
Three main reasons: 1. Consoles like PS never became popular in Eastern Europe, so they never ruined PC games. 2. Piracy meant all games were on equal footing so you had equal access to AAA and very niche games, whereas in the west it was harder to acquire the latter. 3. The market was too small and piracy-infested for developers to bribe journalists, so they cultivated a good taste in games.
I love this game. I spent hours when I was 14 pouring over all the text, reading about these goofy worlds and aliens, and flooding the economy with cheap booze. I even liked the RTS missions, even if I had to cheese them to stand a chance. Really liked the text adventures, so 9.5/10 would infiltrate a planet by becoming a rock star again.

The best game ever made. Of all time. There is a text adventure in which you play the RPG game while playing RPG game. And it has more depth than most of the actuall modern releases. Or that one, where you need to cook the best pizza in the galaxy. Or tabletop game tournament. Or hunting down wild creatures Bear Grylls style to produce Swarokok. The main game is really cool too. Well, 15 years of support, if you count from 2004 - very-very decent, on par with Warcraft III or Starcraft.
This game carried me through many rough times while I served in the Army. Years and several compters later I buy it again. Still fricken great unlike the disapointment I usually have when taking a trip down nostalgia lane. To anyone considering buying it but has reservations about certain aspects. To deal with the complexity just jump in and accpet your first time is just to learn the game. Expect it to not go that well but you will learn nearly everything you need for the next play. As for the Robot fights...yeah just chose the option to never do those and they wont come up at all. Nearly everything else in the game you can do or avoid doing at your pleasure. One of the only games that truely lets you do what you want. Oh one more thing, if you don't want to do combat you better get the fastest engine you can to get away, pirates and domminators do not care that you wish to skip that part of the game.
This game is sooooo goooood, I remember playing Space Rangers 2 as a kid, so nostalgic and the music was very memorable. The only issue playing this as a kid was the text missions, they're hard to understand when you're 8 haha.
The problem with pirate faction and never fixing planetary combat is that HD was made not by the original developers who split at this point (main bulk and the lead designer/programmer forming Katauri Interactive and making Kings Bounty games) and this version is basically a fanfic made by a community of modders that formed around this game. They added more modules and maps/quests that people made back in the day and added in a pirate faction that people really wanted when this game was a the peak of its popularity, but they were not able to balance it properly. Planetary battles are actually inspired by an old ZX spectrum game Nether Earth. Originally you weren't supposed to have any direct control of the robots, you could just build them and they will go and try to capture the nearest production plant, you could only directly control one by flying you command hovercraft to it and assuming direct control. It was even seen in some early pre-release screenshots. But developers were forced by the publisher to drop that and make it more of a standard RTS so it won't confuse people. That's one of the reasons that it's half baked. And you also need to remember that it's just one of the small side activities to the main space game. Another fun fact. All this living breathing simulated universe runs on Delphi.
planet battles are not really brilliant designed, but all that you need is to kinda adapt to it. when you start to understand how it works, it gets much easier and more satisfing sorry for my poor language
I got all of my elementary school friends addicted to this game and one of them wouldn't stop calling me for three weeks to talk about how good of a ship he's got lmao

It seems like it's a good version of the last part of spore, but with the living world elements from S.T.A.L.K.E.R turned up to 20. The RTS parts having unit customisation like Warzone2100 sounds great, but then the way that you describe how it plays makes me sad. I'll definitely give it a look into when I'm finished with Kenshi.
The sheer insanity of the text quests is barely covered here. Time travel! Cult infiltration! A fully functional magic-based RPG!
I played this game and loved it to bits and hated the exact same things you did, the strategy is stupid. Though the arcade part isn't that bad once you get used to it and you start fighting bigger battles in it. Anywho, just wanted to say, I had the original Space Rangers 2 and it came with a manual that basically explained that if you find any errors in the language, it is actually you who is in error, for it is the future, and language has evolved. And you know, I love that. Great video!
the amount of work put in this game is staggering, designing multiple and entirely different game modes, from RTS to text based, to turn based tactic, and now you are going to tell me they made it in a year with a team of 10 x)

It's depends. If you playing on easy/normal - NPC rangers would win WITHOUT you. On hard+ you need to help them, but they still can win if you buy them enough time. Every ranger NPC also buys ships, weapons, complete missions, hire mercs etc.etc.
@@SapFeaRon And then you try 200% aka try to hold the last non-dominator controlled system in the universe by skipping 100 years sitting on a planet or attempting to earn money by trading withing the fucking system until your braindead scientists can develop tier 5 tech and you can afford to buy some cool equipment only to get blown the fuck up by endless kligs of peace in the next system simulator. 10/10 balanced difficulty would recomend again. Also NPCs either spawn with or update equipment according to tech level or buy it in stores depending on what you set it in the advanced settings. The store one is pretty shitty tbh, NPCs will steal your desired equipment and will lag behind tech level hard.

Yes! It's got that nice feeling when you launch it and hear the beautiful soundtrack, like you're home and everything's gonna be great :)

Porobably one of the best non-story single player games made (at least for me)
As one review of the first Space Rangers game noted (paraphrasing from Russian from memory):
"Where some developers delicately try to study and learn from cult sci-fi games, shows, books and movies in a clean lab environment, these guys went in dirty rubber boots with a bucket and plucked every cool and unique idea to add to their stew... and it worked brilliantly."
as a Russian gamedev, thinking back on this legendary game makes me so proud, and so sad - because today neither Russian nor any devs seem to be able to do anything like this.

This game carried me through many rough times while I served in the Army. Years and several compters later I buy it again. Still fricken great unlike the disapointment I usually have when taking a trip down nostalgia lane. To anyone considering buying it but has reservations about certain aspects. Outside Russia it is a hidden gem. One of my top 10 games of all times.
Among the authors of HD there were also designs of the original parts, so here you are not quite right.
official soundtrack is on youtube, uploaded by the author Gregory Semenov
planet battles are not really brilliant designed, but all that you need is to kinda adapt to it. when you start to understand how it works, it gets much easier and more satisfing sorry for my poor language

I love this game. I can't forget my cockroach racer in the prison. I feel so guilty for pushing my cockroach too far... Poor little guy.
Where are the subtitles when i need it uhhhhhhhh.
@@patch-fm "Thanks for the review, comrade!"
@@TheGlenofKrokot Thank you comrade.
Mandalore has the best review format of anything I've ever seen, and it is a respite in this age of strained and hysterical sensationalism. Thank you.
Wow... you finally found it... a game i wanted 4 years ago AN ACTUAL F%@& GAME THAT LET'S THE NPC FACTIONS CAPTURE BASES ON THEIR OWN F^@& YESS!!
@@SapFeaRon oh then easy it is... just saying i need more games where real time sieges are a thing
@@sethleoric2598 rangers can still take systems without you even on insane, problem is how long coalition could hold it tho. There is also an early game tactic where you follow more successful rangers nps and helping them + getting loot after they clear system. Later on if you strong enough they would follow you and pick up scrap after your victory :) There also pirates who will take/lose systems, military operations where they try to take system and you can join in. It's really a very alive and dynamic world and i still waiting for sandbox game with this depth...
@@SapFeaRon ah
OK, so arguably the devs of Starsector played this, and choose a direction from it, and ended up creating something magnificent, but are still perfecting it. Headcanon.
I love how Sseth was trying to claw his way back out of Mandy's subconscious several times during this video
I adore your choice of background music by the by. Your use of tracks from other games is like a little auditory easter egg in every review, I love it.
I remember playing the original Space Rangers 2 back in the day when it came out, and watching this review makes me feel like I played a totally different game. I recall liking the RTS sections quite a bit, and they were my main source of fast money. I didn't notice the crazy level of simulation - I just thought the game randomly did things from time to time. But the text adventures were the high point, even then...

Hello. RIP SR 1998-2016
Very cool of you to shoutout Grimbeard at the end of the video, I found out about him thanks to that, and I much appreciate it. He became one of my favorite videogame content creators in the span of a day.
Would love to see a collab between you two!

0:40 The good thing is that all of patents for MP3 are expired now, so it shouldn't be a problem anymore: it is an "open format" now.
I think the issue is a video codec actually.
This game was a major part of my childhood. I'm absolutely shit at it but it's quite fun and i have many good memories of it.
... and it honestly says something about me that I've been playing it all this time and i'm only now learning it's a Russian game
Отличный обзор! p.s Thanks for russian subtitles.

Wow man, awesome to see you covering a Russian game, can't even say how many hours I spent playing it in school, a true cult classic in my country - and for good reason! And the music is sublime
About 16 years ago or so my sister had an exchange student from Ukraine for a week, he showed me this game. No regrets.
First " _You've been playing a lot of Russian games lately._ "
Then " _THIS LOOKS AWESOOOOME!!!!_ "
I got this game on GOG as one of their $1 mystery buys, or something like that. Then, I loved the game. It's great! A really happy accident to have gotten it in such as way, otherwise I would have never heard of it.
My first experience with weird-ass Russian RPG was Age of Pirates (Seadogs), straight after playing Sid Meier's Pirates!
Needless to say it was quite the experience
(Not to mention countless Java/Symbian games I played, most of which are made by russian (special mention for Revival 1/2, which I played before even touching Civ IV))
"Because unlike Pathologic, Space Rangers is a sandbox game for children."
I see what you did there ; )
Fun fact, the option to never play the RTS missions is actually a relic from the original version of the game there for people who had computers that couldn't handle the 3d engine of it. I remember when I first got my copy when I was younger and my hand-me-down windows XP laptop didn't meet the specs of the game and sure enough, in-game I didn't even have the OPTION of the RTS missions, I could only choose to never see them. Interesting stuff.
There's a mod to disable (or severely weaken) pirate faction (that was not present in the original) and for the first playthrough I'd recomment using it. Makes for a much more balanced experience.
Been waiting for ages for a big channel making a review on this game and it finally happened 🙂 Space Rangers 1 and 2 really deserve more popularity.
Yeah, childhood was spent in this masterpiece. Also I adored rts part because i was a fan of Metal Fatigue. You should try it it if you hadn’t
Double that. MF is such a flawed but great game.
Angry Vaginas From Space , agree - i think it’s very underrated
These videos are an underrated valuable service to ppl who like to hear about strange games that they have no intention of playing. My gratitude knows no bounds.
