    As the on-deck player during an active play, Abreu had no business being there. If he'd have gotten tangled up in the actual play and caused interference by being there, someone would have been called out. If he'd have been in or around the on-deck circle this never would have happened. The umpire was absolutely right to clear the area (without taking his eyes off the play) of the dangers that the bat represented where it was with an obvious play at the plate.

    • @colingodfrin2607
      @colingodfrin2607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      As on deck batters, we are taught to get on the side of the plate (far enough away) to help direct the runner coming home on a close play. Whether it be to tell the runner to slide inside the plate, outside the plate, whether or not they need to slide at all, etc. Abreu was actually doing the right thing, just was in the line of fire lol he definitely sold it a bit though. Not the best feeling getting hit in the knee or really any part of the leg, but you’d think he’d been shot lol

    • @johnboltz3591
      @johnboltz3591 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're an MLB player running home and you don't know weather or not to slide, or how to instinctively avoid the tag, and you need a "home plate coach" then you need to figure that out. It's very simple. Abrau is a cheerleader in this position, and nothing else.

    • @davidk3277
      @davidk3277 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnboltz3591 You can apply that flawed logic to the 1st and 3rd base coach and it just doesn't hold water. When there's a player coming home, the on deck batter should go behind home plate in case coaching is needed. Depending on where the ball is coming from, the runner may not be able to see it, and he'll need the on deck player to coach him.

    Am I the only one who doesn’t blame the umpire for this though? He’s thrown the bat behind himself thousands of times to clear the plate area and this time unfortunately a player was walking behind him when he didn’t expect it. It’s weird, random and unique but I don’t think this is anyone’s fault.

    • @MarcosElMalo2
      @MarcosElMalo2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry, but you look where you’re throwing something.
      I’ve changed lanes thousands of times without looking, and I didn’t expect that other car to be there. No one can blame me for hitting it.
      I’ve tossed beer bottles behind my back, and this time unfortunately, there was someone walking behind me.
      This is sloppy bullshit from an umpire that has already shown a lack of awareness of his surroundings. It’s beyond inconsiderate-if such an accident caused serious injury, the player could lose a lot of money in lost earnings.

      Yet everyone wants to trash Larussa because he’s too old and doesn’t have his players’ backs. Funny how easily swayed people are by media coverage. Also funny how much the media is trying their hardest to get people to believe Larussa is a problem. Last I checked, they were the odds favorite to win the pennant. Pretty sure that doesn’t happen with a terrible coach and so many injuries to key players.

      @@cubpernicus so what exactly is a manager’s biggest impact in your eyes then? I agree he doesn’t play games, valid point. Are they just winning then because they know how to win instinctively, especially the bench players? If TLR is such a team destroyer and is mismanaging this team, why are these bench players not all stars every year since they could play at this high of level with such a terrible manager looking over their shoulders? And to assume that I believe TLR is a king or whatever that all hail comment was is pretty stupid as well. My argument is that what the media is saying does not match up with the performance. Looks like my rational argument caused a short circuit in you so you had to assume I gobble TLR’s nuts. What else ya got buddy?

      @@JJRasta97 so you admit he's not out there playing and he clearly doesn't have his players backs. Pair this with the multiple DUIs and him bumbling thru today's games/rules... Such a great manager! You're so very lucky to have him. There's no way such a young and exciting (and talented) team was gonna win with literally anyone else at the helm.
      They're winning in spite of LaRussa, not because of him. Similar to the Cubs and their ownership. But thanks for proving my point.

      @@cubpernicus wow you really are dumb. Thought it was just an act at first 🤣 yep, he’s terrible at coaching because he has been caught drinking and driving multiple times. And he’s in the hall of fame only because he’s been lucky enough to only manage talented players his entire career. I’d say by your logic, then the Sox are very lucky to have such a destructive, but surprisingly lucky coach. So in your opinion, there’s no such thing as a good coach or leader? Why even have them then? Wouldn’t players be better off on their own?
