Just to be clear. Some of these are strike 3 calls that were balls called strikes to the hitter and some are pitches thrown by the pitcher that would have been strike 3 but were called a ball and some are just plain weird like a foul tip called a strike and a swing and miss on a dropped third strike that was ruled a foul tip. Either way all of these were strike 3’s that were missed

The worst one was strike 3 to MANNY. That was literally in the opposite batters box. The worst no strike was Verlander to JD. In the umps defense, he couldn't see where it ended up and the catcher went crazy trying to frame it. Had he just left the glove there. .... out.

They are professionals and should have others to take their place. They should have suspensions for bad calls.
Bud Budy Umps should be docked pay for making shit calls and then tossing a guy right away for daring to argue. Unless a guy says the “magic words” or whatever, there’s no reason to throw a guy out after less than 10 seconds of arguing, especially when he’s walking away like Kris Bryant was.

yankeesfan1324 By rule that’s currently correct but most umps don’t usually enforce it that way and honestly that’s not how it *should* be. This is a sport and you can’t expect athletes with this kind of adrenaline to not react. The league keeps talking about how they want to appeal to a younger audience but how about instead of worrying about pace of play (which bothers nobody in a sport like the NFL which takes just as long and has about as much dead time) they realize that dumb rules like this are what drives people away

This is my favorite thing about this video. These umps have crazy fragile egos and throw people way too quickly. While soccer, my sport of choice, is far from perfect, at least I can go up to the ref and argue with him. Hell I could probably call most refs dumbasses or idiots and only get a yellow card.

I think Maldonado framed it poorly.
He dipped his mitt down to catch it, then back up, which makes the ump think that he was "pulling" it back up into the zone.
It was a strike but a bad frame and the ump got fooled the wrong way.

The one before thst pitch was a strike shown on the pitch tracker as a strike and if you argue with an umpire about a pitch the next close pitch is also going to be called a strike.

I, personally am a motocross guy and almost never watch baseball. Even I could tell without a second guess that all of these were bad calls. How the hell does a professional umpire mess up that bad? I get bad days but damn.
I don't think they mess up, I think they intentionally make bad calls for whatever petty reason they have. What confuses me is how there isn't a system in play to question these bad calls when they're made. It seems to be the ump has the final say and that's that. There's gotta be someone above the umps who can call them out when they pull this crap.

You should see some of the single-A short season umps. My wife and I were at an Everett Aquasox game when we lived up in Everett, WA. We were right like 20 feet from home, so the ump definitely heard my commentary. From our vantage, we could tell high or low, but not whether it was over the plate. On one particularly low pitch that was called a strike, I yelled out "Geez! Get the man a 9-Iron!" My wife was in fear the whole night that I was going to be escorted from the park despite my assurances that yelling at umps isn't a crime.

yeah, good point actually, he dropped his glove and then pulled it it up a lot. Not bad for high school, where they move the glove 2 feet and then ask where it missed ("you know where it missed, that's why you moved it 2 feet after you caught it!"), but this is MLB. Moving the glove that much tells the umpire the catcher didn't think it was a strike when he caught it. people watching have no idea how much the borderline pitches, especially low in the zone, depend on the catcher doing his job correctly to be called strikes.

Joseph Napolitano I have to respectfully disagree that all borderline pitches should be strikes. It’s gonna take a bit for me to explain my theory but read until the end before considering.
Right now, there is a defined edge of the strike zone....the plate. Pitchers are smart, they flirt with the edge of what they think will get called a strike. Sometimes they get a strike that isn’t, and conversely sometimes they get a ball called that actually was a strike. Don’t get me wrong, I think there are some obvious blown calls but I believe all those “borderline” pitch calls get averaged out over time. If there was a policy that all borderline pitches get called a strike, the actual strike zone would become bigger. Additionally, pitchers would target the edge of “borderline” rather than the edge of the plate. We’d still have the same number of arguments and tossed players/managers, the only difference being they’d be arguing that the pitch was (or wasn’t) “borderline”.
The call could've gone either way, but Hunter went way too far. I've seen that pitch get called a strike numerous times.
Manny used to get called out on pitches in the other batter's box all the time with the Red Sox. It was like that old Jimmy Foxx / Bill Klem story: "Bill, you sure missed that one! / If I had your bat I wouldn't have!"

Anyone here who thinks they can umpire a game of baseball better than these umpires has no idea how tough it is to umpire a baseball game, especially behind the plate. These umpires, despite their very occasional mistakes, are exceptional at what they do.

The strike zone expands and contracts based on the height of the batter. It's not a static box like on TV.

Definitely agree. To those that are against it, or feel that 'human error' is acceptable as part of the game, do you really think its right that a guy misses a pitch that's a foot and a half low, outside, etc., which affects the outcome of the game.... Not to mention the fact that humans make some calls based on emotion/personal grudges, which should NEVER be a reason why a pitch is called a ball or a strike

Look at how they do it in Tennis, they use the electronic devices for all net calls, and the line calls when needed, but there are still umpires overseeing the action. What I'd like to see is the home plate umpire having some automated strike zone device that maybe beeps when its a strike (based on the K-zone we see on TV), which would allow all balls and strikes to be called correctly RIGHT there on the spot. Only thing it would eliminate is the manager/umpire arguments from the game. I get that it has been an entertaining part of the game for fans, but I think all those managers that kicked dirt onto those umpires, or spat on them while swearing, would've rather had the call be right PERIOD. I could be wrong, but I really think we're at the point now technologically where its unacceptable to continue to see not just bad calls, but egregious calls that help decide games
I'm a huge baseball fan and I couldn't agree more. Umps are old and arrogant. Umps should be officiating, not interfere with the game. How many times have we seen an ump miss a call then argue and even eject players? Umps call around the strike zone edge is statistically horrible. I'm for tradition, but this tradition needs to go.

This video just reminds me how much BETTER umpiring is today as compared to the 80s and early 90s. Back then, umps just made up whatever they felt like. If it was a cold day, they had a giant strike zone. if it was a tied game going into the ninth, they shrank the zone for the visiting team to help them score a run, then enlarged the zone for the home team to make it almost impossible for them to tie it up. If the visiting team didn't score with the big zone, they gave the big zone to the home team, hoping THEY would score a run…no extra innings at any cost. The umps rarely called a strike if the ball was two inches above the waist, but they called low and outside balls strikes all the time. Anything to get an out, and get back to the hotel. Certain players had smaller zones than others. Wade Boggs had a tiny zone. Frank Thomas had no top to his zone…waist down only…..When Don Mattingly got up, he took the first pitch every time, and thump would call it a strike no matter where it was. don didn't complain, and he just hit the next pitch wherever it was….This was when he was young and unbelievable with the bat….

1) It would be more fair. There wouldn't be any random advantages given to one team over another. The outcome would actually be reliant on the players skills alone
2) It would save a lot of needless drama, and therefore time as well.

and it absolutely does change things. An automated strike zone (assuming it's done correctly) would have a 100% accuracy on balls/strikes. That makes competition more pure, and leaves no room for opinion and thus all the arguing/whining/drama we see now about balls and strikes. I think that sounds nice.

MLB has made several adjustments over the years to try to balance hitters and pitchers (mound distance, mound height, DH rule, etc) and this is no different. It's necessary in my opinion to keep the game alive.
BigBlueBear I don’t think pitchers are dominant. Batters aren’t really smart is the problem..they swing for the fences with two strikes, never want to go the other way, never choke up..in other words only care about the long ball..if they removed questec, and that silly box from your screen, and went back to calling pitches off the plate strikes, batters would be forced to slap the outside pitch the other way, and wouldn’t be looking for walks..it would also reduce the time of game. It has a huge impact..my speech is over!
