    Mama would be so very proud of you primo! She didn’t teach us the language because her children were looked at & spoken down to as “immigrants” and were severely demeaned when they were young! She didn’t want any of us to feel that hurt. At least that’s what she told me when I inquired about it! I miss her every day! Thanks for sharing her love of cooking! You did her rice & beans perfectly!!! That’s exactly how I remember it!!! XOXOX

      Thank you, prima! Yeah, I was told the same thing too about why we weren't taught the language as kids. I totally understand and appreciate their reasoning, but part of me still wishes that I was fluent in the language so I could fit in more with our people. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! It's so cool for the people who follow my channel to learn just a little bit about our beloved Mama, who is missed daily within our family. Love you! 🇵🇷

    Puerto rican food is soo underrated not sure why it's not more popular in America most people seem to look down on you if you eat this type of food all the health nuts always have a problem with everything so most of these ingredients they would probably think are terrible but I have tried to make some Puerto rican dishes recently from youtube and can honestly say I loved everything I tried the food had so much flavor and it felt so satisfying to eat actually I think it was one of the best meals I had in years

    Thanks for creating this video! Over in the UK we don't have a few of those ingredients in our supermarkets but it's fascinating to hear about new cuisines. Also rice & beans are a staple "end of the month" meal for a lot of people managing on a budget and it's interesting to hear about ways to make them tasty. Hope you're keeping well.

      Puerto Rican here, I have made this dish all my life and you can make it from fresh ingredients, fresh minced garlic, dried beans if you dont have canned, fresh potatoes, pork any pork will do, the fattier the better, tomato sauce or paste, annatto seed oil, make your own by steeping in warmed oil for an hour until nice and red or you can use powder if you can find it or leave it out, and season it with salt, black pepper, turmeric, oregano, garlic power if you dont have fresh, and onion powder these are the same ingredients in Adobo minus the anti-caking chemicals and MSG which may cause cancer, cook same way in video and serve over rice with a nice thin fried pork chop, enjoy.

    This is almost exactly how I make my pink beans and rice minus the meat. I’m going to add meat next time. I also use the jarred society from Goya. I learned the recipe from my neighbor when my husband was in the army. One of the best parts of military life is having friends and neighbors of all cultures and recipe exchange and pot lucks. When my husband retired from the army, we spent at least 2 years sad and depressed because we missed meeting new people.
    Side note. I have made this with small red beans before and it was delicious. I’ve used a mix of pink beans and small red beans and black beans and it was delicious. Sometimes you just gotta use what you got! I must say my absolute favorite is using the original pink bean though. There have been times I didn’t have pink beans or didn’t want beans so I used all the ingredients to flavor my rice then threw it all in the rice cooker, it was Pretty delicious. I usually always have people ask me for the recipe. Either way I make it!

    I'm from PR myself! So good to hear we have that in common. Although my husband had told me that I'm losing the traditions a little. I don't use sazón, I don't necessarily have to use Goya, I buy cheaper brands and I don't make sofrito! I cut onions and peppers and mashed the garlic right before using it. The food tastes just as good. What I don't like about sazón o adobo is the MSG. I don't use medium grain rice, I like jasmine. I don't use empty butter containers to store leftovers and my oven is not full of pots and pans. 😁 I call myself Southerican now. 😁 I'm a traitor! No. 😁 Oh and no olives or capers!

    I happen to have all these ingredients, have to give it a try. I store dry pink beans as a replacement for Swedish brown beans. I use them to make traditional Swedish Bruna bönor. I visited Puerto Rico last year and really enjoyed the food. Had the opportunity to eat some homemade meals. Besides, living in FL, many of these ingredients are readily available around here. 😊

      @SweFlo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheUrbanPrepper Google "Swedish brown beans". It's kind of a sweat and sour flavor (flavored traditionally with golden syrup and vinegar). We Swedes like to eat it with thick smoked pork (like thick bacon) or even just sausage. Very easy to make, and works great with the dry pink beans. The syrup (Swedish Light Syrup, "Sirap") used is available on Amazon under the brand Dan Sukker, but i found the US brand Steen's 100% cane syrup works well too.

    @D.H.CE_FL 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Also, we make this same recipe but with garbanzo instead of pink beans. Garbanzo can be found in any store. We use pumpkin instead of potatoes but I agree that potatoes would be way easier to find. We don't eat meat (don't ask me where I found a Puerto Rican who doesn't eat meat), so it's just rice and the seasoned beans.

    When I was a teenager I said I'd marry a Puerto Rican Man because I loved the cuisine so much! I didn't but I still love the food!

    This is honestly so accurate. With my pink beans I mix in my pork or hamburger empanada filling.

    Looks delicious. Most of the American food brands and some of the types are completely unknown here in Europe, especially anything Puerto Rican.
    My standard bean recipe, which I call with an at-home marketing name "Delicious Stew": fry 400 grams of minced meat or pork slices (could use canned meat), add sliced champignon (optional), a can of white or kidney or faba or whatever beans in (preferably) tomato sauce, ½ liter package of smashed tomato or puree, good amount of frozen vegetable mix (beanstalks, corn, peas, pepper, baby corn, ...), salt, pepper, chili pepper (optional). Serve on or mixed with rice or pasta, such as spaghetti. (Despite of the fancy marketing name, nobody else in our family likes it. That's good, more left for myself.)

    You can include red kidney beans and garbanzo beans... this works with all beans.

    Mmmm, spicy beans. I don't think I've seen pink beans in any stores here in the UK (I live in a heavily Indian influenced area, so we can get a lot of spices and other ingredients, just never seen pink beans) so what makes a substitute for them? Haricot beans? I make a three bean chilli, with Red Kidney Beans, Butter Beans, and Chick Peas, and either keep it veggie, or fry up some chopped chorizo, as that's a good keeper.

      LOL! Yep. When I would ask mama, should would usually just say "this much" and put it in. No measurements. :)
