    20 years ago I took a job milking cows early in the morning. It was horrible. 200 head, so they had to go through super fast, laden as they were with milk. My job was to lead them into the milking stalls, hose off their udders (their pen was practically a cesspool), start a stream, and attach the mechanical milkers. It was February, below freezing, and pitch black outside, but the cows were warm and docile and eager to be milked. But then that blast from the hose was freezing! So the milk didn't let down, they'd get touchy and try to knee you, and I was taught to use a kicker bar if they didn't cooperate. Milking took forever that way and seemed cruel, so I'd let the hose water run a bit til it came out warm, and the warmth helped the milk to let down, and the cows didn't kick. The other milker went on blasting them with ice water and seemed to think the cows were fussy just to spite her; so she used the kicker bar with relish, like it was sweet revenge. I loved the job, but I felt so guilty, I quit. And now I do cry a little bit on the inside over spilled milk because I know cows go through so much to give it to us, it's a shame to waste any of it.
    Thank you, HGP, for striving to make them comfortable.

      That sounds like a *horrible* farm. I can't imagine treating animals that way. Washing off their udders, sure, they tend to lay down with no concern as to if they'd just pooped there, but the rest sounds *mean.* I grew up in dairy country where all the farms are family run and the few farmhands who need to be hired grew up around cows, so that rather affects my perspective, too.

    • @wendysnelgrove5870
      @wendysnelgrove5870 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Every time I see a milking parlour with the stations where the cows can enter and be milked whenever they want I always think what a sensible idea it is. Of course they want to release their milk. And being milked stimulates more production. The more my kids ate, the more milk my wife produced. That seems like a win win for the farmer and the cow - farmer gets higher production, cows are more comfortable.

    • @carbine090909
      @carbine090909 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@brigidtheirish it's always good to hear that other farms DO treat their animals with kindness. I know it's a business, and efficiency is key, but I believe it's our duty to find a way to be both kind and efficient. Thank you for your reply. 🙏🏻

    • @carbine090909
      @carbine090909 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@wendysnelgrove5870 exactly. I remembered what it was like to nurse my daughter, and warmth always caused me to let down, be it from sunshine or a shower, and it was uncomfortable - therefore I was eager to nurse. And absolutely, it's a positive feedback loop - the more you nurse, the more milk you produce Same for the cows. A little empathy goes a long way. Thanks for your response!

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@carbine090909 Generally speaking, kindness *is* efficient because the cows are healthier and so produce more milk. There's always going to be *someone* who doesn't get that, though.
      You're welcome.

    again as someone who basically knows nothing about cattle (my mum's 'extended' family owned alot of cattle in Minnesota, meaning she did labor work for them but little else) I still deeply appreciate all the work you do to promote products that in an 'ideal super universe' would put you 'out of work'... because ... farmers CARE about their animals ... if they eat them or work them, they still care and so few outside sources understand that aspect of being a farmer. Bringing your animal to milk or slaughter .. farmers aren't madmen - they don't like excess suffering, and generally excess suffering doesn't actually produce better products.
    tldr: I loved listening to your farmer man, because he knows what it means to be a cow farmer :)

    I loved this video! Hearing new voices and seeing new faces always makes it interesting! Chatting with the farmer raises awareness about farm life and the problems/solutions encountered.
    Craig is looking well! Excellent video!

    Very interesting listening to Andrew and how he really cares for his cattle. He is a really good advertisement for this flooring. His heard look so healthy, happy, and calm. It’s lovely to see how our farmers in the U.K. are constantly worrying that their cattle are healthy and happy. I always try and buy British for everything I can. From hoovers to settees, to meat, to carpets. We need to make sure we support these farmers as much as possible. Thank you for a wonderful, informative video 😊

    So interesting hearing a cattleman’s point of view. Love your videos, so cool to see how the cows feet are treated.

    Thank you. I like when he talked about 'better performing cattle' etc. I immediately had pictures in my head of cows doing songs and dances with top hats and canes!!! hehehe!

    Often something overlooked is the Whole Life Cost of something. It may well be expensive at the outset, but the WLC will be cheaper. By preventing something, or planning for something that might happen in the future, the overall cost over the lifetime will be less. Often when you choose a cheaper option, it becomes more expensive through its life as it needs more intervention. Adam may have had more expense at the time of installation of the rubber, but it's probably paid for itself over the last decade.

    Loved that interview with farmer Adam. In particular, I'd love to hear more about how he's managing his herd to reduce his carbon footprint. As a consumer, I eat about 90% of my meat from local farms which are grass fed or free range as the case may be, and limit antibiotics to medical needs. Not sure if there is more I should be looking for.

    Hi Graeme all I can say is thank you. what a good memory for me and my five year old granddaughter. I went to North Carolina and was watching your video. Oh it was a movie night with them so we finished up and I turned over and hit the hoof gp. She was watching it with me so when we had another movie night she asked to watch another when we finished up movie night again. I explained to her the cows are getting their hooves(fingernails)done like she does and you’re the one who makes them feel so much better. Gigi’s granddaughter and the hoof gp what memories. Thanks again

    Tell your better half that I love her brogue! She should be on here more. Lol! Just picking on you. But no kidding, she has a lovely voice. I could sit and listen to her and you talk all day long. I am from Alabama in the United States. That is in the south.
