Solved! There's a catch that won't allow that black go run backwards unless there's a tape installed. Once that's in there the top solenoid catches and allows the gear to run backwards, engaging the playhead.

Hi! I have a gear with three pins and I don't know how to set the spring so that the white gear can engage. can you help me with this?

Sorry, it's been so long I don't remember anything about how this works! There's probably a subreddit for old tape decks, maybe someone there can help?

How is your deck going mister? Could you provide the lowest frequency this deck can play back? I saw the specs somewhere and it says 40hz to 16 khz, that's a narrow range and I don't think it is worth it if it can't play deeper bass, any other Deck of a few years later has better numbers? Why acquiring this? Could you please give your opinion? I'm a noob and don't know about tapes. Thanks

I actually haven't played anything back since I got it working! The sound quality on tapes is just so bad compared to pretty much anything else (vinyl, CD, digital) that I haven't gone back to it. It looks really nice in my stereo rack, though! :)
