Watched hoping to find out about head and capstan transport for my K300. Anthony didn't quite go that far into it for this exercise but IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT HE KNOWS WHAT THE HELL HE'S DOING; thank you sir!

Hi, great video, thank you for making it. I am servicing the Yamaha KK400 tape deck and cannot get the tape transport to open when I put the tape transport back in the deck, however it opens perfectly when the transport is out of the deck. It doesnt seem to be catching on any thing when it is installed in the machine. Very frustrating!

    Great job Tony 👍
Have seen this video ages ago but I'm revisiting to see if there's anything that I have missed or didn't know back then...
A drop of oil in the motor bearing would have helped with the wow and flutter as would have pulling out capstan pin and cleaning out the old lubricants and applying fresh lubricants!
Yeah there's not much to expect from that tape but since a cassette deck is nothing more than a bunch of preamplifier's, I'm sure that there's Capacitors that are suffering from high ESR or low EPR (equivalent Parallel Resistance or DC drain) that are adding noise to the recording on the tape and then adding some more on the playback... A signal tracer should make lite work of tracking down where in the signal path noise might be getting in if any... It would make a great video trying to improve the performance of a cassette deck I think...
Dr Cassette repaired a similar deck and found some Capacitors with high ESR which could also mean that there might be others will low EPR...

Great video. I have a Yamaha K31 I need to adjust the speed on but the motor doesn't have the hole for the screwdriver. Any help?

I bought one of these decks new back in '88 as well and still have it. Just replaced the counter belt, which I suppose has something to do with why I stumbled across this video ;D

That's my deck. Bought it new in 1988. Still running on original belts. One question though, I've noticed that when you first press play, the sound is muffled and then immediately clears up. Any idea what that could be?

good to know you have no problem with 88 belt i have a couple of yanaha 380 guess they were from a couple years later 94/95 (innerworkslooks the same ) i was worried about those belts before copy my tapes to pc equal speed etc. But maybe its main belt is stil good to go seeing above clip. i might remove that counter belt beforehand to avoid stickystuff thats not a big mis for playback
i do remember a sony midrange tapedeck from 90ties that i had no belts at all that i see only plastic gears
good thing about that is no rubber problem after many years

Electone_Guy pinch roller cleaning may stop it.

I also own one that I bought new back in 88. Only the counter belt has failed, and that was easy to replace. I also have those white spots on the metal inside, and my deck has been indoors all these years. I am not sure what it is.
Now if they would just start making Chrome and Metal cassette tape again.....

Hey! I have the same deck, and for some reason, the head mechanism won't engage. I was wanting to take the transport apart, but on the backside of the transport, there is a metal support that was bent, seemingly to keep that small board in place with the cable connectors. Did you have the same thing? If so, how were you able to bend the metal piece to remove the board and get to the last screw on the back of the transport? I really don't want to hurt my unit, but it just stopped working suddenly so it needs help.

You said you got a 'bag-o-belts' for that counter. I just bought a KX300 and it has the same problem you had. Other belt seems to drive okay. But just wondering where you got the belts on Ebay. Let me know if you can. Thanks!

Why did you start from 1kHz up? Why not from 440Hz or even lower like 160Hz or even less?

    Hi,
You do a great job as aTech Head but I have a Yam duel deck KX-W282 no one seams to have a repair Vid on it.
It has similar tape counter set up as yours and really wanted to see how to fit new belt !
How did you get main belt into machine? Before you did the Hook thing.
I also have scratchy Pots in amp etc but how did you clean them up as you say?
You are odviously a good technician by all your equipment around.
But I just needed a screw by screw a step by step instruction.
    Kind Regards.

Thanks for making and sharing this video on TH-cam. I see a lot of expenses test equipment around your work space. So when you speak of how to check out this or that, and that you shouldn't needn't to adjust this tape head, and I could go on. But a big thank for the video.

Hi! Thank for this great video! I have a different issue with my KX-300 : the record and play heads bar in the bottom doesn't come up once I press play (the motor spins the tape, but that's it).
Do you have any idea on how that mechanism works? I took everything off as per your explanations, but I still don't get how it works, and if I open everything, I am not sure I ll be able to put it back together :)
Thank you in advance for your help!

I just picked up a KX-500U. The tape counter is not working so I feel certain that it will need a new belt for that. Can you tell me the part number or where you got the counter belt for the 300U? Do you think they use the same belt? Thanks for the video!!

If put the Aux can I record from the phone to tape?

    • @TheGazmat
      @TheGazmat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes you can. Be shure that you have proper cable (3.5 mini jack - to 2xRCA) and put volume on your phone at the half in the begining. Also might be good not to use any software equalizers and voluemizers on your phone

I usually see cassette decks being compared to CD players and I think that it's totally wrong to do so. Cassette decks line up from cheapest to most expensive had a huge impact on sound quality... No matter what amplifier and speakers you connected the cheapest cassette deck to... It's still sounded like Shit... While the people who could afford a higher end cassette deck wondered what all the big fuss was about... On the other side of the fence... The CD player... Even the cheapest one sounded better connected to a half decent amplifier... From one cassette deck to another there were huge differences... Let alone all of the different types of cassettes available. Great video though.. I really enjoyed watching.. I didn't expect the deck to function without the belt for the timer... I have a few decks that won't work if the timer isn't spinning also... It's using some hall effect sensor to detect if the tape is still spinning or about to get chewed LoL.. But it works well though... Anyway I really enjoyed watching your video... Was hoping to see a complete recap showing the sound differences of before and after on the scope...
