  • Just want to show the procedure and what is involved in updating the pcm to the latest level. Many customers are now falling outside of even the emission warranty that would pay for this. Anything 2008 on can usually benefit greatly from a software update if there is one for their vehicle. I keep my vehicle updated with all the latest software as it brings improvements just like Windows updates on your computer.

    Just had my 2005 f150 5.4 3v pcm reflashed at Liberty Ford. Glad I asked for it. $119.00 plus tax ended up being $127.75 out the door. Dropped off at 8:30am and was out by 9am. Brakes feel stiffer, gas pedal feels stiffer, even the steering feels different. After driving it I noticed immediately the shift points got fixed. Seems like my gas pedal has to be pushed to half the amount as before, as well as the brake pedal. Feels like a new truck, especially the throttle. I was on Ford forums for about a year before doing this. I had hard starting problems, hesitation during acceleration, random rough idle, etc. They told me if any of the starting problems happen again to bring it back. Thanks Brian!

    Thanks for the video. My Ford dealer won't even check for any updates, let alone do a reflash. I have told them about my concerns with shifting on my 2013 Escape 2.0. Here it is over 2 years I've been driving it, can't believe there is not an update. Really wish you worked at my dealership. I enjoy your videos.

      EscapeLover What are your shifting issues? My wife has a 2013 Escape, 2.0 naturally aspirated with a 6 speed auto. It has been shifting funny since it was new. Most noticeable in the 2-3 shift under moderate throttle. Feels like it spends too much time in-between gears, followed by abnormally hard thump when the next gear engages. I bring it to the dealer and they say there's nothing wrong. If it was one of my $1500 beaters I would have sold it long ago, for fear of impending tranny repairs. I thought I was the only one.

    We got ids at the shop and I didn’t know how to really use it but knew we could reprogram since they pay for it. After it gathering dust and finally diagnosing a truck with a pcm ground issue I’m doing it and it seems to be working I love ya m8

    Questions: What is the name of the software for your laptop? 2. Can a scan tool do a flash? 3. Where do you get the software for your PC? How do you know when an update has been made to a Ford?

    I paid $49.99 for 2 days, i have the Snap-on Pass Thru Pro III and laptop. Downloaded it worked good.

    I've tried to flash a PCM in a 1998 Mountaineer but it refuses to communicate with it to do the flash, clearing KAM or doing the KOEO and KOER tests. It falsely claims there's a communications error. It also fails at doing the ABS service bleed. Anything that involves sensing when the brake pedal is pressed it fails to do.
    I do get an note about a TSB on flashing the PCM out of the vehicle.
    For reading and clearing DTCs it works. It also is able to set the tire size.
    I've used FORscan with the same hardware. That software does the KAM clear, the KOEO and KOER tests, no problem at all detecting the brake pedal being pushed. Unfortunately FORscan does not yet do ABS service bleed for 1990's Fords.

    I took my 2011 Ecoboost F150 in to get the PCM updated per several transmission TSBs and your videos. I specifically requested a PCM re-flash and the Trans Adaptive Table be cleared per your advice. They ended up charging me 95 dollars. Is this not something covered by the 5 year powertrain warranty (I'm still well within by time and mileage)?
    Also, what is the drive cycle one should do to "re-train" the transmission table, as I'm sure they didn't drive the truck afterwards. How long until the shifting should settle down?

    Is there a way I can do this myself? I have a 2003 Lincoln Navigator and I just pull a used ECU off a 2003 at Pull-a-part. Will I be able to perform this ECU flash myself?

    Hey man. I have a 2007 Five Hundred that I heard had an update due to the PCM causing surging when putting it in gear. And yes I have had it on a computer and no codes and says everything is fine so... I just need that done to it.

    Hi..
    So can i ask a question...
    I know you're working with a ford model car here, but im sure the PCM and their functions are universal for any brand of car.
    So i have a 2009 Mazda that has been running fine and is still running fine in 2024. However last year The clicker that locks the car and sets the alarm, the interior lights (over the seats), and the Stereo in the car just stopped working and no longer function. There is also a door ajar indicator lit up on my dash even though no doors (or the trunk) are ajar. I called the dealership i purchased my Mazda from and told them about these issues and they told me my "PCM" may be "outdated" and needed a "software" update. This is the first time in 15 years I've ever come across something that has been wrong with my car being related to requiring a software update. So my question is with the features that I've explained here that are no longer working in my car. Does it make sense that yes in fact the PCM may need a software update (if not needs to totally be replaced). And if a software update is required to fix those problems how much should that run for a half hour's worth of labor? Thanks in advance! :)

    Thanks again for your reply's and great videos. Okay I go a VCM 2 and installed the IDS and connected everything; comm to vehicle, etc. BUT the IDS told me I'd need to re flash the VCM2 - okay? I did exactly what it said on the screen, pushed the button on it and wait for the beep, etc. Then initiated flash; told me it will take 40 minutes, watched TH-cam videos and it came back VCM 2 flash successful. NOW I can not comm with the VCM 2 and all I get is a beep every one second. It was "bricked." Can not connect to VM2. So some hair pulling and A LOT of internet searching I found a guy with a "restore" procedure and he also included the filed. Okay I got nothing to lose; 1,200 dollar brick. Did what he instructed and installed the files and I got it back; comm and everything - yahoo.. BUT now since I enter manually my vehicle into IDS and tried to start the Program Module - it refused stating because vehicle was entered manually? I entered the vehicle info manually since it wasn't in the model menu. Entered the Tear tag number EXH1 and - yahoo showed my engine type and year, etc. I also tried to enter the calibration # shown on my scanner and was told invalid #? Is there a way to override this lock out when a vehicle is entered manually?

    The adaptive tables learned by the trans. That's a nice clue. this is probably why my transmission is running so bad after the recent recall and reflash. My mechanic is suggesting it's a transmission solenoid and the issue was present before the flash. I would like to see if the manual table was reset. Clues are pointing to -> not likely!

    Here's more information: vacuum gauge reads steady 25 vac at idle. Fuel pressure with vac connected is 31 psi.

    I'm a ford technician and I have the VCMII. I updated too many ford PCMs but didn't notice a difference in performance like we see on Chrysler updates via wiTECH. What's your opinion ?Thanks for your videos BTW

    I have a 2002 Ford lighting truck. I replaced fuel pump twice, my ford dealership said it was a bad fuel pump, IAC val, egr valve. Then they told me that they got a code, after they said the fuel pump resistor was bad. They just cleaned the rust off cause they couldn't get the part. I picked up the car, it seemed to be running good for 1 hour, then rough idle when at stop. Back to the dealer, now they say its a bad ground with the pcm. At this point either they are just guessing, or taking me for a ride. Could flashing pcm may fix fuel problems.

    Started having transmission issues with my 2007 ford fusion with 90000 miles. Wondering if this would help me with the problem I'm having. First couple of gears go in normally, but last one makes a hard kick. The car doesn't rev up, the gear goes in but hits really hard. Hope you can shine some light on the issue. Thank you.

    2014 F150 with 3.7 and a 6R80. Replaced transmission and now no start. I have no ckp signal or ckp/cmp sync on scanner. The crank sensor was removed but reinstalled after realizing you have to get at the torque nuts from the other side (duh). I thought possibly I put the ckp sensor in wrong, its a real pain to get that in there, but after doing it again I think its in correctly.
    The transmission was not reflashed, we thought it would at least drive to the dealer to get that done.
    No codes until I reset the KAM, and now we have a P1639
    I had considered swapping the oe valve body due to the shift strategy issue and avoiding a reflash bill but boss said don't bother because of the damage to the old transmission.
    I'm married to this thing now, thanks for any help you can give me.

    Do you have a video on how to flash the ACM on a 2017 Fusion? My radio keeps cycling, even when power is off, causing the battery to drain. The dealership wants upward of $300 to flash/reprogram it

    Hi, Great video on this subject...Wondering what type of devise/s that one needs to accomplish the reflashing of components.Do you have to subscribe to programs on the internet or from the various vehicle manufactures in order to receive the most recent updates.. Thanks for sharing this info..I'd have to conclude that the dealerships are charging an unreasonable fee to do the reflashes of the systems..Cheers and thanks for educating us...

    Ford and dealerships charging for updates made necessary because of their own fault in engineering, is b.s. Should be NO CHARGE. Just bought a 2010 Mercury Milan. Dealership said due for update. Occasionally shifts a.little.late..

    On 07-03-2023 a local ford dealership updated my 2016 F150 PCM from "C" to "E" and immediately may my trucks transmission WORSE. Now, dealership wants to throw parts at it. What could of caused the truck to be un-driveable from a pcm reflash from "C" to " E".

    Hi Brian, when you say reflash pcm is the same as programed? because I have 04 explorer with P0505 and there is a TSB for it, the explorer was okay until alarm when on and after disconnect the battery now there no throttle respond and loss of rpm, I talk to the dealer and they will check if still cover the TSB..

      +felplay vina (felplayvina) reflashing the pcm updates the software. What you need is to manually clean the throttle body and reset the pcm as per my videos then let it learn the new ETC idle trim value.

      You really don't need much idk what kinda creds. You'd need. (Creds as in like being registered with Ford not Ford credentials)

    Church van e350 someone stole Catalytic converter’s, now wont shift out of first, ford says pcm was bad cannot get another anywhere,bought aftermarket new, ford dealer programmed it but it wants pats key code and this van has no chip key , how do you get rid of pats programming on a new never flashed pcm

    on july 3 2023 i went to a dealer with a "minor" 3-4 harsh shift, long story short a PCM update from "C" to "E" caused catostrophic issues with my 2016 F150 immediately. No codes, but the truck is undriveable. What do i do next? i need help, asap!!

    First of all, thanks for your videos, they help me a lot......I need your advise regards a code that might be related with this video....
    I have a ford freestyle 2006, 78000 miles, last month i had a wrench tool code (don't remember exactly the number ) but was related with the transmission,eather hot tempertur , low level .I checked the fluid and was low like a quarter...fill up the fluid and the code( wrench tool) is gone.
    Today i have a C.E. light, the code is P0106, that is related with " Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Sensor Range/Performance" .
    Should i Reflash the PCM software? . The car is pretty new, only as drive like 7000 miles per year.....

    hi fordtechmakuloko i have a ford focus 2014 have a problem some times when i drive message say power steering fault during that key cycle work fine when i turn off and star over again no power steering hard to move and code c102d when i read live data of pscm say vehicle speed at 100 mph whe is stop, just calibrate pscm and work fine like 2- 3 days, where is the pscm?? in the same pcm have update pcm or is other place Power Steering Control module???

      +Meme Aragon C102D is high friction internal to the steering gear only fix for this code according to Ford is to inspect tire pressure and for binding in the front end and besides that to replace the steering gear. What does the speed pid indicate in the pscm and pcm when the vehicle is moving?

      +FordTechMakuloco pscm speed are 100 mph all time and in pcm show the right speed i try with other pcm second hand from march 2014 but need to rewrite vin on that pcm i use launch x431 but cant find where write new vin thanks for help my friend

    My windstar 2003 sometimes have slipping transmission problems mechanic said when scanned shows pcm refresh took it to Ford fisrt told me will charge $112 plus taxes then called don't need it don't know what to do now, any suggestions please

    I have a 2000 Ford E250 5.4L I just replaced the MAF sensor and intake manifold gasket. Shop couldn't find anything with code P0171 and P0174 reappearing again. They recommend reprogramming or flashing. I wonder how much it should cost. The mechanic says a couple hundred to almost a $1,000 depending on make with Mercedes and Audi more towards the $1,000 mark.

    i have a warm start problem on my 06 Mondeo.. i.e the car starts all the time but if you have been recently driving it ten you get no control of the throttle and the battery and engine management lights stay on.

    I have a 2008 ford 5.4 superduty xl. I want to add cruise and I've been told that you can add a steering wheel with cruise control and flash the PCM and have cruise. My local ford dealer has no interest in verifying this.

    We were doing this exact procedure on my 2010 Expedition when an error message came up halfway through the writing stage of the PCM. The software then went on to update the TCM but in the process the PCM was corrupted. The software is just saying to replace the PCM and will not let us try and update anything again. Have you ever seen this happen? Someone suggested it could have been because we were using the bluetooth connection vs USB cable. I just dont understand how Ford software can ruin Ford hardware??? At this point I guess Im going to have to spend the 500 plus to get a new PCM and hope we can get the as built data entered correctly. Any ideas? Thanks.

      +tichendorf you were using the ford ids via Bluetooth? yes it does happen once the module is bricked and cannot communicate the update process cannot be started again.

      I have a 98 Expedition with a battery drain .It started when I was trying to put led lights in the cluster ,I had forgotten to disconnect the battery .Did it short from pcm or gem ? Nothing stays on . Ive done so much trying to figure out the problem from grounds to fuses disconnect alt.and still have 2.50mlamps drawn . Even changed gem an fuse box an nothing.I started thinking about a new pcm but want to ask first or will a reset work ? Or when I unplugged the cluster did it pop a circuit ? Please help. thankyou for always helping on youtube!

    After reflash a new PCM with FJDS it starts trowing a code p1639 ( VID corrupted block )
    Could you please tell me what I can't do with it ? I tried to reprogram it 3 times and still the same code , anti theft still on ever after Reset procedure of PATS

    I'm trying to update the calibration on a 99 expedition. I get a FEPS circuit open or Ignition not on error. Theres no check engine light on... only code that I found and I think might interfere with the programming is Key-in circuit open..( The ground contact part broke off years ago.)

    hey love the videos, I've taken advantage of your knowledge plenty of times. I have a 2010 F150 5.4L 215,000 km the transmission has always shifted odd since day one. when in 6 gear running 80km/hr and you floor it. it hesitates a while like the torque converter won't unlock. then bang, a violent downshift happens. you can feel it through the entire drive train. if you tap the gas once prior to flooring it, it down shifts normal. do you think a tcm re-flash would solve my problems? thanks.

      Did u end up updating ur pcm because my car is a 2007 lincoln MKZ and it has weird shifting issues and bad gas mileage I'm thinking of getting the pcm updated

    I have a 2004 ford explorer. 2 days ago I went out to start it got it started and shut it off then went to start it again and it would not crank or start. when you put the key in the ignition the theft light flashes every 2 seconds but when you turn the key to on position it stays solid for 40 seconds or more. How can I fix this problem? it will not let my suv start at all. the mechanic checked all fuses and relays and everything is fine. He put a new battery in it and not the problem. Checked the volts at the started and all is good.

    Hello Good Afternoon, One question I have a Lincoln Town Car 2005 No trouble codes but the Evap And Catalytic Monitors seem to not get ready I need either or to pass inspection for a client I've tried a KAM Memory Reset also the vehicle has already traveled aproximatly 320 miles and nothing, do you suggest reflashing the pcm if so with what tool?

    Just took my 2004 ford explorer for pcm reflash for a p2106 code that send my car into limp mode wrench light and engine service light. How do i know if they realy flashed it? My code came up quicker then when it was cleared by scanner.

    I replaced my stereo (2008 Escape 6cyl) stereo with a Sony and disconnected the battery for 4 days as recommended my Crutchfield/Sony. Should I have the PCM reflashed? One thing I noticed was the Anti theft system(flashing light at bottom left of instrument panel) never flashed before so should I assume this was turned off prior to us buying this used at dealer. Now it flashes intermittently once the car is locked and horn beeps. Thanks. I've learned a lot from your videos.

      Your PCM should be ok but your pats key might say key not detected that happened to me but i just reprogrammed the pats key with forscan worked like a charm.

    I have a 2016 Mustang with a v6. I purchased it brand new 2 months ago with 235 miles on it. The 3rd day after letting it sit for 12 hours and after few minutes at high idle it dropped down to 600rpm's and started to shake as if it was going to stall. 3 different dealers said if no engine codes they can't tell what it is. they checked tsb's and only one service writer said there was engine idle problems but no fix. it does it every day after sitting over night. It goes to 800rpms then to 600rpms. 2 different dealers let me try other Mustangs with same engine and they go to 1200 rpms and then to 800rpms and then to 600rpms and no rough idle. it seems I'm missing 1 warm up idle. your help would be deeply appreciated.

    Minha dúvida, o módulo PCM existe somente nos câmbios automáticos? É uma peça física ou apenas um firmware na central?
    Pergunto, pois, estou com os botões do Cruise Control instalado s e os testes dos mesmos acusa estarem corretos, mas, no teste de estrada, não liga.
    Eu, via VCM IDS, consigo instalar o firmware PCM na central, para utilizar o CRUISE CONTROL em um SIGMA 1.6 manual?

    am considering reprogramming pcm on a 2013 f150 EB to latest calibration.Never had any misfire issues, but wish to optimize fuel econ. because current pcm is outdated by about 3-4 versions. i have access to IDS software & vcm2, but not sure if truck battery needs to be on a life-support charger during the update, even though my batt is brand new (

    Fordtech I had a wrech light come on my 2020 gt once I hit 15k miles. And I was told it had a torque calculation error. Well dealer fixed it after 2 times that I took it. I was told they did a software update on the pcm. I asked the guy what caused it or if this was common on new vehicles and they weren't able to tell me

    I have a 5.4L VIN Z 8TH DIGIT, SOHC, BI-FUEL 2003 F150 7700 work truck and I have already removed the propane tank (propane system is broken anyway) and have the engine torn down for other repairs. When I put back the fuel rail I intend to remove the propane rail and injectors using regular gas injectors. Is there an option using my forscan tool to modify the or disable the check for propane or is this a IDS procedure? I would like to be able to disable the propane option completely on my own so the PCM does not check to do the fail over to gas like it currently does. When the truck was built and modified in Canada it was reprogrammed with a new code 3U7AALA. Any advice would be helpful. I have not looked at the modules yet with forscan and would rather be able to use this tool if possible.

    I just bought a 2003 Lincoln Navigator and the owner told me egr valve is bad. But while driving it its hard to drive. As in accelerating is difficult it acts like the transmission at times doesn't shift, like the transmission is geared one way and the computer is geared another way. It idles rough, and even when driving the low oil pressure light and high temp light comes on. It drives as if it has no power. I had oreliey put a code tester on it and they said that the ecu/pcm don't know if there's a difference was swapped out but not reprogrammed and the truck is in a stolen mode. Does these symptoms sound right with the brain needing to be reflashed or did I buy a dud? Thanks!

    So i just bought a used 08 ford edge a month ago today when i started it after work the whole car vibrated on idle the check engine light came on and it lagged a little. I made it home without stalling but it still vibrates on idle. Do you know what this problem could be. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

    I know from past experience some car makes require very specific power supply to the PCM for flashing. Are Fords also that way? I know BMW's you can corrupt if you dont stay at above 13v

    READ THIS! Just had to put PCM in Son-in-laws 2013 F150 3.5 Eco Boost for coil driver malfunction Cyl 1+2 dead. (P2300-P2303) I used IDS with VCMii and 115.01. (China full chip) Got a used PCM but was unable to write a new VIN to it. PCM was exact part numbers DL3A-12650-EE that was the latest update. Could not write VIN to it using PMI. would shut off power to PCM when I tried to use it. HOW TO: Install PCM from Junk yard with the correct P/N and program Pats keys. It will show a code of P160a Module ID miss match. It will start and run but will have the wrong VIN. Ok unless you have emissions test to get through. To write the correct VIN to the PCM, load a session in IDS with the correct VIN. Go to Powertrain, Service function, Relearn Vehicle Data. This will write PCM VIN and other data from the BCM to the PCM. BOOM! correct VIN in a Junk yard PCM. I just did it. No promises on different IDS versions or Model years/vehicles but it worked for me.

    My 2004 ford explorer limited with a 4.6v8 has been sitting with a dead battery for a couple of years. It had the transmission replaced right before it was stored. Now upon startup, it shifts funny. It is parked at my moms until I can get to it but do you think that it needs a pcm reprogram? It is also saying advance trac off, traction control on?? Does the abs module need reflashed too??

Some people says it's the Transmission others is the computer or EPC. Want to know how can I get the Connector cable and the software for give an update a try?
    Everytime the gearbox have to change between 3rd and 4th gear became crazy. Like if the computer don't know what to do. But if I turn off the O/D and change manually there is no problem. Even I can hit the pedal and the gears never slip. Only when have to change between 3rd and 4rd is the problem.
    Need help from an expert because here in my country there is no a good Ford Garage working.

    So... can you really tell if there has been a tune installed in a F150 ecoboost, and then removed prior to taking it in to the dealer? If so, what kind of information, or fingerprint, does it leave? I'm thinking about getting a tune for improved towing and MPG but don't want to kill the warranty. Thanks!

      Shawn P I believe it leaves a p0650 code or something like that behind and if we go into check the pcm part number it will not be right also. Most dealers do not check for this though.

    my 2004 f150 started doing rough idle and stalling while driving the other day its a 2004 f150 5.4l 3 valve i replaced cam shaft sensors as thats the only code it was throwing then it continued to do the rough idle and stall while driving i cleaned throttle body and it still did it now there is no throttle u can step on pedal and it does nothing i get message saying truck engine is in fail safe mode i cant move truck at all it still has rough idle and stall but now has no throttle what is the problem

    Thank you for making this video. My 2000 Expedition was indirectly struck by lightning 2 days ago. I tried to start my truck up and it stalled, I re- attempted to start the truck again and I heard a pop on the passenger side. The Anti Theft light flashing and it is making a ding sound in a rhythm of 5, which I do believe is a code. Also my horn and panic horn sounds muffled. I attempted to code the truck but it came up with an error reading all 10 attempts. I Me telling the Ford servicing tech what I mentioned above says it's the PCM. Does this sound like it's the PCM? If so, can I just purchase a new one and install it ? or does it sound like it's the Anti Theft mechanism. What is your thoughts on this? FYI the tow truck was suppose to pick it up two days ago, it has yet to arrive...

      When vehicles get hit by any kind of lightning almost all modules need to be replaced we have seen many. You cannot swap in a pcm yourself, it does not control the Anti Theft light (PATS) the instrument cluster does that but it need to be able to talk to the pcm, so when a new pcm gets put in a parameter rest needs to be done on the Ford scan tool. Yeah the way it sounds you will need multiple modules. Have you contacted your insurance company yet this is about to get expensive.

      :( I was kinda hoping there would be a way of doing some of the work at home and then some of the work in the dealership..
      I am still a student and trying to keep things cheaper as I have the feeling they are going to say my truck it totalled. I love my truck, and have over 200,000 miles on it but it's paid off. Im not looking forward to payments anymore
