From 70's to present time if I'd spontaneously choose only one album per decade:
      1970 - Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
      1984 - Trouble - Trouble (Psalm 9)
      1991 - Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
      2000 - Eternal Elysium - Spiritualized D
      2017 - The Obsessed - Sacred
2020 - Kirk Windstein - Dream in Motion

It kinda verges on sludge, is the thing. It's weirdly intense for a stoner record. Sort of like how most people call Acid Bath a sludge band but their second record straight up sounds like Sleep.

How Blayne did an entire primer on doom without even obliquely mentioning the unholy trinity/Peaceville three is a mystery. Maybe it's the challenge of trying to do a "Doom for Dummies" while still maintaining the hipster street cred. Things did get... dance-y for PL and MDB around the turn of the century before they came back to their roots, and Anathema has been purely prog rock for more than 20 years now. Still, the first half of the 90s was crushing from those three bands.

@Matt T. the new album is kinda hit or miss with me, feels kinda like Confederacy of Ruined Lives Pt. For me bands like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Saint Vitus, Cathedral, and Count Raven were my foundation in the genre. Cathedral and Solitude Aeturnus were my two favorites (at least during Cathedral's Forest of Equilibrium and Soul Sacrifice period). I basically followed the thank you notes in the sleeves of any band I was listening to (I knew about bands like Trouble and Witchfinder General from the sleeves but it was a bit of time before I found these bands albums anywhere).

Black Sabbath and Candlemass got me into doom. I would argue that Ghost are actually a modern take on traditional doom, and though their most recent album, Prequell, strayed away from the doom side a little, the modern classic "Secular Haze" is a brilliant way to introduce doom. You have helped me expand my interest to Death Doom with Hooded Menace, Solitude Eternus and Eternal Rot.
But if there is one epic doom band that does not get enough love, it's Godthrym. Their 2020 release "Reflections" was one of my favourite of the year. Slow, crushing, and powerful! I need to listen to more Funeral Doom bands, but the band that got me interested was, of course, Ahab. Though currently I need to find more bands like Shades of Deep Water. If you want something that's slow, heavy and perfect for a funeral march, then "Death's Threshold" is the album for you!

    • @princealigorna7468
      @princealigorna7468 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That first Ghost album definitely counts, I think. Very much 70's, Sabbath-inspired, occult doom. The songs had a poppy edge, but they were slow, heavy, and atmospheric. Year Zero also counts, though it's more experimental. I think by Meliora though, they'd morphed beyond the boundaries of doom into just a great heavy metal band. (That's also the point it became obvious that each album was going to be a little different by exploring a different era of metal on each one. The first was early-70's Sabbath, the second was mid-70's meta, Meliora was the start of the 80's influence coming in, while Prequelle was like sticking all the 80's into one album. There's Motley Crue. There's Mercyful Fate. There's Trouble. There's freaking Foreigner on Miasma with its AOR synths and screaming sax solo, there's freaking Meat Loaf! That album is nuts and that's why I love it!)

My first experience with doom was Primitive Man’s album Caustic. It’s slow, distorted and coated in anguish. I was definitely intrigued but hadn’t looked much further than Primitive Man, I only wanted other bands that sounded just like them. Later on however I simultaneously fell in love with black metal and doom metal. I got into doom through Sarah’s band Smoulder which opened the gates for me in multiple directions, it got me into epic doom metal, traditional doom, heavy metal, it seriously is such an important album to me. Around the same time was when Atramentus released their brutishly slow and crushingly heavy album Stygian. This alongside The Funeral Orchestra’s Negative Evocation Rites (suggested by Blaine on Metal Monthly) really got me into doom metal and I highly recommend all of the bands/albums mentioned

Got into "not mainstream" metal thanks to Sleep ! Indeed Doom is a great gateway.
I would have put the Melvins real front and center of Sludge but Neurosis is also acceptable of course, they did everything!
Also, is Opeth in Epic Doom ?? I'd say so. Damn I love the 2011 album. And Ghost? ... Seems real blurry to me.
Next : slow it down even more and talk DRONE. Boris, SUNN and all ! Maybe an episode with a bunch of the really weird genres ...

Such a delicious genre to get into. I sometimes wish I'd forget everything I know about doom/stoner metal just to have the bliss of getting into it all over again.
Start from Down. Then, after the inevitable dissapointment with Phil Anselmo's antics, you can move on to Sasquatch, Orange Goblin, Kyuss and Blind Dog. Sleep is the obvious next step. If after this first voyage you find yourself more drawn to the 70s nostalgia & psychedelic side, you should then check out Graveyard, Witchcraft, Capricorn, Weird Owl, Red Fang, Nebula and 1000mods.
If, however, you're a spooky scary skelleton type of person, then you're ready for Doom. Candlemass, Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Witchfinder General, Reverend Bizarre, Lucifer, Cathedral and of course the all mighty Black Sabbath.
If you really love candlemass, and you want more of it, then check out Solitude Aeternus and the first record from Avatarium.
Now if you find yourself craving something that's more agressive, but still has that groovy vibe of stoner/doom, I got you covered. High on Fire, Crowbar, Corrosion of Conformity, Eyehategod and Bongzilla.
After all that, if you just want to get weird, then look no furhter than Neurosis, Om, Earth, Pelican, The Melvins and Isis.

Actually AIC Sludge Factory got me started. I loved the slow crunchy sound. I started searching more of it out and discovered Candlemass. From there I discovered Pallbearer. Finally I came across Acid Bath’s Dr Seuss is Dead and I’ve been phkd ever since! I was a total recluse with music for a couple decades. When I ventured into the underground, I was set free! Still love AIC but I mostly go to underground shows anymore.

The way I got into Doom was first listening to Into the Void by Black Sabbath and I went, “hey, this is freaking heavy, I want more of this!” So I then went to stoner doom and I found some of the heaviest bands in the world, with Blayne’s shirt presenting in my opinion the 2nd heaviest band on earth! Electric Wizard Dopethrone and Come My Fanatics also being favorites of mine.

Feels like there really are at least two main directions of sludge.
To me examples of genre defining bands are Eyehategod, Melvins (Lysol, Bullhead, Gluey PT, Eggnog), Meth drinker, Fister, Grief, Noothgrush, some electric wizard and Primitive Man - even if they're are little extreme.
Much more exemplary to me then Baroness, Kylesa and Neurosis.

This is probably one of the most succinct explanations of Doom, et. al that I've heard. Well done, sir. I am often trying to defend my love of Metal to others and I think Doom is a great gateway. It's analogous to listening to the surf break on some foggy Maine shore. Heavy, repetitive, dank. Love it. Melvins' "Stoner Witch" was a biggie for me, but I cannot get enough of Monolord's "No Comfort" and Messa's "Feast For Water". Beautiful stuff, man. - CB

Got really into it when Pallbearer dropped their debut, went down the rabbit hole after that, hitting the classics and modern hits, but Bell Witch will eternally be the best example of how doom has evolved as a genre. Mirror Reaper may be the best doom metal album ever written. It’s dark, it’s soothing, it’s anthemic, it’s slow, it’s both terrifying as fuck and beautiful. Never has an album moved me to tears that hard. Cried at things like posthumous records and dedications to others in the form of albums from many a genre/subgenre, but none has made me wail in the way that album did.
