If I recall correctly, some guy I knew in high school transferred all the Metallica MP3s he had onto my ipod. From there I branched out to everything from Slayer and Megadeth to Power Trip and Warbringer.
For me it was Metallica. It started with Enter Sandman, but then I found out they had much much much better songs on their earlier albums. Now Master of Puppets is my favorite album of all time!
Revocations latest album (the outer ones), I bought a guitar, realized Dave Davidson was one of the best in the world, found out he learnt a ton of thrash, found out every other band I loved was heavily influenced by early Metallica and here we are.
When an older cool kid asked you if you liked a certain thrash band that you weren't familiar with, you said "yes" and then went out and immediately bought their album. That's how I got into so many bands.
I mean, I think most people will say Metallica was their entry into Thrash Metal. It sure was mine, started with them, moved to Megadeth and Slayer, then to Kreator and Sodom, and then everything else.

He has done this in all the get into videos I've seen. He doesn't go for the obvious choice because his politics, And America bad. So American bands aren't recommended no matter how how many fans started with the well produced and and easily digestible bands. One by Metallica is probably responsible for more people getting into thrash than any other song or album.

lol, pretty much exactly that! Metallica -> Megadeth (cause they were more extreme Metallica, lol) -> Slayer (even more extreme) -> Kreator (tired of the american bands) -> Sodom, etc. Of course after all that i moved on to Black and Death Metal and pretty much left Trash Metal behind but come back to visit it every so often when an awesome release comes out.
Songs about politics are fine, but bands/musicians being deplatformed and/or cancelled is lame. Also extremely partisan bands can be hit or miss imo, usually miss lol.

I suuuuuper appreciate you connecting these dots Blayne. There's some folks in metal that don't recognize the severe indebtedness extreme metal owes to punk and some punks that don't realize how fast, raw and down to earth (i.e. - not just about swords and dragons) that metal can get. There are variations on the combination but most of the results are, for me at least, fucking earth shattering.
metalheads who haven't listened to punk generally associates punk with bands like Dead Kennedys or Blink182. That's the problem. by the time Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables drops (1980), the underground of the underground was getting more extreme -- like Discharge and Amebix, coming around the same year as DKs but more people know DKs than Discharge, and more people know Discharge than Amebix.
That's basically how I got into metal. Was listening to hardcore and punk for a long time. Then found bands like earth crisis and hatebreed who sounded a little heavier. Crossover and metalcore got me into metal. Now I mostly listen to thrash and OSDM.
@@curtisfroude6283 yeah my uncle took me to see hatebreed, sick of it all, crowbar and suffocation...I was so into metalcore that I didn't quite understand the gravity of that lineup...now I'm looking back wishing I got drunk and moshed harder in worship.
In terms of metalcore, I do love that early 90s era of metalcore when bands use to play in the hardcore scene. Integrity, Ringworm, Overcast, and Strife are definitely some of those bands I can think of. I know there's a revival of bands emulating the 90s era of this sound (Code Orange, Knocked Loose) but were more influenced by Disembodied. Just wanted to share some thoughts on it. Glad to see Cave In get some attention here.
HAIL THRASH METAL! The genre that introduced me to metal as a whole, with Master Of Puppets being one of the first albums I ever bought. Great to see Power Trip in here, probably the best modern band to use to introduce thrash to somebody.
Punker here, my god thank you for the Tragedy section. Great, I like love the vocals here, so aggro. That's what I miss in metal sometimes is the aggressive tone of hardcore. Crossover got me back into thrash. Went to Warped and saw Municipal and lost my mind and had a blast. Thank you!!!

So to me most of it sounds pretty stale and lacking creativity. It's not bad just not something I'm really into. More interesting music in other genera . I do need to check out more power trip because I liked what I heard the little I listened one day

Metallica's Black Album was my gateway drug into Thrash, but it was because of Metallica's earlier work, Slayer, Exodus, and Testament that got me hooked for life.
@@jamespwoods4324 You can't overrate an album like Reign in Blood, I would say Hell Awaits and South of Heaven are underrated. They are amazing albums too.
It was 1983, when I was 20 yo, the band was Anthrax. Then I went and saw Metallica on the 'Ride the lightning' tour at a club. The most fun I ever had. Mosh pit, beer pitchers flying through the air. A hangover that lasted until the next week. Probably kill me now. I'll never forget it.
Hatebreed would’ve been a dope mention when talking about bridging the gap between metalcore, hardcore, crossover, and thrash. I mean in Sam’s review of concrete confessionals he said they made a slayer album so there’s that...
Blayne you are right to include Metalcore in this list because that’s how it worked for me. I started in the Devil Wears Prada scene and then moseyed on into the early metallic hardcore Zao scene and have very recently begun dabbling in Slayer. Metalcore at its core (pun intended) is the same ingredients as crossover thrash but used to create a different dish and I think lots of scene kids like myself eventually make their way back to Mecca of thrash.
Overkill and Anthrax solidified my love for Thrash. "I Wish you were Dead" from Overkill's "The Electric Age" and "Madhouse" from Anthrax's "Spreading the Disease", those two songs brought a groove and catchy riffs to what I perceived was a lot of straight forward shredding. I'm surprised you mentioned Metalcore, but not Blackened Thrash, which is the bigger brother of Blackened Speed which you mentioned in the Black Metal episode. I'd say the avatar of Blackened Thrash is Skeletonwitch, though Toxic Holocaust does blend it with crossover thrash a great deal, too! Also the difference between Speed and Thrash metal is that Speed is a hacksaw, while Thrash is a chainsaw. Both share similar traits, playing really fast, but thrash condenses it into a more potent formula.
It's hard to say whether Anthrax or Overkill is my favorite thrash band. Anthrax writes fun, memorable songs, but Overkill's Horrorscope, The Killing Kind, and The Years of Decay just hit hard for me. Oh well, long live thrash! I'll have to check out some blackened thrash and blackened speed though since I love black metal.

Of note would be "Rebirth by Blasphemy" by Midnight, and "The Affair of Poisons" by Hellripper. 2019 had "Under the Witching Cross" by Bewitcher and, my personal favourite of the bunch, "Satan Spits on the Children of Light" by Devil Master. This year we're expecting a new Bewitcher album, and one that has already released called "Through the Gate Eternal" by Demiser.
Thrash has been my favourite metal genre for 15 years or so. Out of all the old school genres, along with just being badass, it seems to be one of the most versatile: it can be fun, aggressive, serious, political, goofy, technical... You name it! And the fusions with other genres, whether it's blackened thrash, crossover, thrash/death or others, all kick ass!
I got into thrash metal as a 12 year old kid in 1992. Actually that’s when I got into Metal period . Really back in the 90s we really didn’t have 1 million different sub genres of metal. We just called metal music metal. Now they were distinctions for the far extremes like glam metal and death metal but yeah in 1992 my family finally got cable so I finally had MTV. It was seeing the music videos for all the singles from Metallica‘s black album and the video for “one” Is what made me an instant Metallica fan. I didn’t understand at the age of 12 what songs were on what albums so I remember saving my allowance up and I went out and bought the first Metallica album I saw which was ride the lightning and over the next two years I got the other four albums that were out at the time. And of course this led to me getting into a whole slew of bands like Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura, etc . As well as other bands that were either metal or hard rock but not really in the thrash genre like Ozzy Osbourne, White Zombie, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Rage Against The Machine, etc. No matter what anyone’s opinion of thrash metal is whether they think it’s outdated and they only like newer stuff or they are just a casual fan besides the classic metal bands that started it all thrash metal is without a doubt the most influential genre of metal that there is. Death metal, Nu Metal, and what people call alternative metal i’ll have thrash metal 2.2 as their biggest influence. I really doubt without bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc. that any of those other genres would’ve ever happened. It’s 2021 and if you told me I could only listen to one genre of metal for the rest of my life without a doubt it would be thrash. I mean I think it’s pretty safe to say that classic metal and thrash metal are the biggest and most successful genres in the metal genre. The big four thrash metal bands that we all know of and we all know who they are…. Are all legends today. In 2019 I went to slayers retirement tour and I saw them in a 20,000 seat arena that was very close to being sold out. There was probably around 17,000 people there to see slayer in 2021. The next Metallica album that comes out will go platinum and they will tour the entire globe in every show will be sold out. It’s not like glam metal or Nu Metal or death metal Who all had their day in the sun for three or four years and then was dropped for the hot new thing. And nothing against any of those genres I have bands that I love and all three of those but thrash is just timeless.
I have a special place in my heart for thrash metal; I don't listen to it much anymore, but whenever I do, it still kicks ass. That shows just how timeless the genre is. Anthrax is my personal favorite, but Overkill is a close second. I got into metal through bands like Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Metallica; but I quickly latched onto thrash metal with Anthrax, Overkill, Testament, Death Angel, Havok, Vektor, and Sepultura. I'll have to check out more Sodom and Kreator though since I haven't listened to a lot of German thrash.

My thrash journey started with Kreator's "Pleasure To Kill" and Destruction's early stuff . Of course, I'm almost 50,, so I was the perfect age for those. Also, listen to "Low Life" by Cryptic Slaughter for an amazing experience.
51 here and same but it’s a bit of a blur with Metallica, SLAYER and Exodus. I also picked up a compilation called Speed Metal and it was my introduction to Cryptic Slaughter. In fact “Lowlife” is my alarm and ringtone (when I actually bother to turn my ringer on) much to my wife’s chagrin :)
Surprisingly it was death metal that got me into thrash, I was never really into any metal besides a lil bit of the catchy new metal songs that everyone knew, I bought a “blind ticket” just a random gig ticket and didn’t research the band, I got there and there was this hairy Swedish man on stage with the softest voice when he was speaking, then out of nowhere I heard the gnarliest growl I’d ever heard at that point then I was instantly hooked, the speed, the pits, the crowds energy, the amazing people. I got home and decided to search slayer as I couldn’t remember none of the bands names, who can read those things, so I started leaning towards thrash metal more just because I could understand the band names
How I got into thrash? The year I think was 2015 or 2016, I was 13/14/15 years old and really liked Metallica's black album. Really liked it. I got interrested in learning Metallica's history, and found out about their early material and how they were pioneers in this subgenre called Thrash metal. Started checking out Kill 'em all, Ride the lightning, Master of puppets, ...And Justice for All. They blew my mind and I was all in. Later went on to find other bands in thrash metal. Megadeth, Overkill and Havok early on. And even now, even if I've listened a lot to Testament, Antrhax, Slayer, Flotsam and Jetsam, Exodus. I still find myself to be an absolute Overkill fan. so yeah. Thrash. Started off with a bit of Metallica, and now it's my favourite subgenre of Metal.
For me it all started with Metal Militia... on my cousins ipod...😂 yeah I'm only 22 but WOW what a song and I've been on the thrash boat ever since. Great video as always and FUGGIN SLAYER🤘

BUT: I agree to those comments that say, it was a brief history of thrash, not "how to get into thrash". For me, as I grew up with the classics like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Slayer, Kreator or Testament , I learned much more in your video "How to get into Death Metal", because there you offer much more "starting points" into a subgenre then you do here... Nevertheless, a cool video anyway!
Interesting mention of metalcore since it’s more adjacent. I think bands from the Cleveland scene like Integrity and Ringworm are good reference points for both metal and hardcore folks to like. As for modern crossover aside from Power Trip (RIP Riley), Mindforce, Ekulu and Enforced come to mind. EDIT: Also forgot about Drain because Drain is your friend.
I feel like Anthrax, being one of the so-called "big four" bands that just so happens to arguably dance with hardcore punk more than the other 3 is a great gateway band for punk and hardcore fans to enter the thrash world.
My gateway to Thrash was Ozzy's No Rest For The Wicked and "that" Black Sabbath song called Symptom Of The Universe. Then I got eargasms with MEGADETH! My favorite Thrash song is Good Mourning/Black Friday.
Zao is one of the most underrated and amazing metalcore bands around, I also recommend everyone check out Converge and Every Time I Die. Cave in is only metalcore on their first album
The thrash scene in the UK was great too with Onslaught leading the way, seeing them for the first time in 86 in London with Anthrax on their first UK show
I got into Thrash and Death Metal quite early at 13 with Slayer and Entombed, but couldn't get into Black Metal until last year at 27 lol. Some newer recs from me: Deathhammer, Condor, High Command, Foreseen, Wraith, Bonehunter, Vampire, Cruel Force, Bütcher, Hellripper, Reactory, URN. And give that Speedwolf LP he mentions in the video a spin, it's beyond great.
I’ve been waiting for someone to mention Zao on here. They were a major influence on Metalcore and Death Metal acts in the the 2000s and beyond. And they’ve been around since the early 90s.
So glad the did a little Zao shout-out. They are often overlooked because they were metalcore but they are so different from so many other metalcore bands.
I gotta give it to Blayne in 2018 I hand't heard of Power Trip after I heard them the rest was history. I was fortunate enough to go see them live in Connecticut with my son who was only about 7 at the time and my wife. We'll always have the memories of that night and my son literally witnessed a legend before his untimely passing. I've been a BangerTV fan ever since that 2018 album of the year video he released with Sam.
Integrity honestly might have been the best choice for metalcore, plus their sound is closer to hardcore punk and thrash metal than most of the 90s metalcore bands

I'm a late comer to the game of thrash. It all started with KREATOR's Enemy of God and EXODUS' Shovel Headed Killing Machine. The Gathering by Testament is also one I really enjoy.
you bring up Exodus and Kreator, both albums you mentioned were circa 2004 or so. In my opinion both bands only got better from that point on wards. In the case of Kreator few bands of that vintage predominantly play their 21st century releases live.
I got into metal from Motörhead (Orgasmatron & Rock 'n' Roll eras) , then Survive by Nuclear Assault (an overlooked gem, in my opinion), Testament (Trial By Fire is THE thrash anthem) and Overkill's Hello From The Gutter (I worshipped them then, I kinda still do). I was definitely a thrash maniac back then. Lastly, Flotsam And Jetsam was (and still is) much more than a thrash band.
I was mostly a Zeppelin/classic rock kid then I somehow stumbled upon "Inner Self" by Sepultura and it blew my damn mind. That song, and "Beneath The Remains" in general, was my gateway into metal that wasn't Sabbath or other radio friendly fare.

I'd say the big four, a lot of the Bay Area bands like Death Angel or Testament and some european bands like Artillery with that masterpiece called By Inheritance are the perfect gateway to get into thrash essentials. Catchy, riffy, kickass shit.
The first Thrash band I listened to was definitely Metallica. But the first band I heard that made me go "Hey, I want more of that" was Nevermore. From there I wen to Kreator, and from Kreator the rest of the Thrash. To this day Thrash, Doom and Stoner are my favourite genres.
I got into thrash via Metallica. Right around the time Death Magnetic came out, I had to do my 8th grade music class project on an "older band that existed before I was born." and my mother bought me Death Magnetic because I liked rock music and it had just come out. I loved the album a lot, and went looking for their other albums. The first one I found was Kill Em All, really loved that one, then found the rest of their 80s stuff. Then I started getting into Megadeth, Slayer, etc. A few years later Bonded By Blood started exploding and I saw them in concert. Big fan of thrash metal, it's really done a good job standing the test of time.
Megadeth with Rust in Peace! And POWER TRIP brought me back to the genre 3 years ago. Digging black/thrash now and 2021 is, so far, an excellent year for Thrash!
Hell yeah. Megadeth and Metallica is what got me into metal to begin with and then I expanded further over time with Slayer Anthrax Testament and Death Angel. Some of my favorite albums(one per artist) Ride The Lightning I know Master of Puppets gets all the love, but I prefer RTL and I think its more consistent throughout honestly. Also my personal favorite track from Metallica is Creeping Death. Great lyrics, killer riffs and solos and it might be the song that works best for them in a live setting with the crowd engagement. Rust in Peace. The best thrash album and no one will ever convince me otherwise. Just the expert level song writing and creativity in each track is astounding and . You want two songs in one? Holy Wars. You want a song with a dozen solos? Hangar 18. You want a song with a sick minute and a half bass intro? Five Magics. You want a song that is just bass with creepy vocals that is just an intro to the final track that has a sick drum intro and Dave doing one of his wacky vocal performances he is known for? The one two punch of Dawn Patrol and Rust In Peace. Want a song that has a guitar solo that makes guitar players cream their pants? Tornado of Souls. Its just the perfect thrash album that came out in the last good year of the first wave of thrash(1990) before it went into a coma for fifteen years. South of Heaven. This one is also not the obvious pick for this band, but I really appriciate the longer songs, variety and the lyrics on this one compared to Reign In Blood. Among The Living. Incidently this celebrated an anniversary yesterday. Where else are you going find an album with songs about Stephen King books, Judge Dredd, indigenous history, and the tragic death of John Belushi. The New Order. I found Testament's first album to be rough around the edges in places, but their follow up is the real deal. Trial By Fire, Disciples of the Watch, Into The Pit. Just so much great stuff. Act III Its a weird one I know, but hear me out. One shocked me about it was how it experimental it was with how it just throws stuff in for the fun of it. Discontinued is the perfect example. They just have like a two minute instrumental intro that includes a kinda funky bass part and I couldn't believe my ears when I first heard it. That's all I got.
How did I get into thrash? I imagine many people have a similar story: When Master of Puppets was released we were still into Appetite for Destruction and AC/DC. Group of us stayed at a friends house, smoked up and drank some beers (we were about 14. Good times!). In the morning, my mate stuck a tape in the deck, said “Check this out guys, it’s fucking heavy as. “. Cue acoustic guitar part. WTF? Was the general reaction. Then the opening riff of Battery cut in. Oh my fucking god. Minds blown. Brains all over the wall. It fucking KILLED us. What an awesome album. Still pull it out sometimes and have a listen. Don’t let anyone tell you Metallica sucks or Lars sucks or whatever the fuck people say. For a time there, they were the heaviest and most brutal thing around. Still maintain Battery is heavier than anything Slayer ever did. And I love Slayer. Metallica man. Respect.

All of this is so hilarious to me. I was born in 1970. My older brother got me into AC/DC, but Mercyful Fate scared me and I threw his cassettes into the fireplace. When I was 13 a guy in my typing (with a typewriter) class wore Ride the Lightning shirts but he scared me too. Then I got into more punk and New Wave really, then my intro to thrash was actually was listening to punk radio show from Berkeley, Maximum Rock and Roll, they played Hit the Lights, on e DJ liked it, the others all got mad and said it wasn't punk. Then my friend Dave who wasn't punk or new wave, he wore jeans and flannel, he walked straight up to me like he was on a Mission from God, and gave me a blank cassette recording copy of Slayer,'s best album "You have to listen to this". The only Slayer album I really listen to is the first CD of Decade of Aggression, live. Later, you will love this Mr. Comedy, I did a Psychology lecture at University on Love and Caring, where I wrote the lyrics to the Antichrist on the chalkboard and then played the part where Tom Araya stops the crowd between songs and says, "If you see someone going down, help them out, all right? That's what we are here to do , help each other out!" It's I think harder to evangelize this way now, you can't put a physical object like a cassette in your friend's hand. To get someone into music you have to hack their earbuds.

I ended up doing something like his make-up later, in maybe 86 after I got weirder than my older brother ever was, but only for Halloween. 99% of my friends were not ready for that level of sacrilege, certainly not in public. Even Banger has a hard time figuring out how to deal with subject matter like that. You win some, you lose some. It's worth mentioning in the context here at least because for the recording of Metallica's early work in Denmark KD was always involved, my guess is you know more about this than I ever will, but it speaks too to my point of physically meeting. Power Trip is such a good thrash band. It's a shame their singer passed away last year. Hornet's Nest was an instant thrash classic.

He has done this in all the get into videos I've seen. He doesn't go for the obvious choice because his politics, And America bad. So American bands aren't recommended no matter how how many fans started with the well produced and and easily digestible bands. One by Metallica is probably responsible for more people getting into thrash than any other song or album.

Metallica -> Megadeth (cause they were more extreme Metallica, lol) -> Slayer (even more extreme) -> Kreator (tired of the american bands) -> Sodom, etc. Of course after all that i moved on to Black and Death Metal and pretty much left Trash Metal behind but come back to visit it every so often when an awesome release comes out.

I suuuuuper appreciate you connecting these dots Blayne. There's some folks in metal that don't recognize the severe indebtedness extreme metal owes to punk and some punks that don't realize how fast, raw and down to earth (i.e. - not just about swords and dragons) that metal can get. There are variations on the combination but most of the results are, for me at least, fucking earth shattering.
metalheads who haven't listened to punk generally associates punk with bands like Dead Kennedys or Blink182. That's the problem.
by the time Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables drops (1980), the underground of the underground was getting more extreme -- like Discharge and Amebix, coming around the same year as DKs but more people know DKs than Discharge, and more people know Discharge than Amebix.

The number of people that started their journey at metalcore has to be huge.
That's basically how I got into metal. Was listening to hardcore and punk for a long time. Then found bands like earth crisis and hatebreed who sounded a little heavier. Crossover and metalcore got me into metal. Now I mostly listen to thrash and OSDM.

In terms of metalcore, I do love that early 90s era of metalcore when bands use to play in the hardcore scene. Integrity, Ringworm, Overcast, and Strife are definitely some of those bands I can think of. I know there's a revival of bands emulating the 90s era of this sound (Code Orange, Knocked Loose) but were more influenced by Disembodied. Just wanted to share some thoughts on it. Glad to see Cave In get some attention here.

Punker here, my god thank you for the Tragedy section. Great, I like love the vocals here, so aggro. That's what I miss in metal sometimes is the aggressive tone of hardcore. Crossover got me back into thrash. Went to Warped and saw Municipal and lost my mind and had a blast. Thank you!!!

These are my personal favorites but I'm not a big thrash metal guy. I started listening to heavy music as a kid with korn , ratm, pantera, and white zombie as some of my first introductions to the genera. Oh and system of a down. So to me most of it sounds pretty stale and lacking creativity. It's not bad just not something I'm really into. More interesting music in other genera . I do need to check out more power trip because I liked what I heard the little I listened one day

Metallica's Black Album was my gateway drug into Thrash, but it was because of Metallica's earlier work, Slayer, Exodus, and Testament that got me hooked for life.

Nowadays may not be so impressive, but listening to Reign in Blood for the 1st. time in the 80's was quite shocking.
Reign In Blood is a great album but I've always thought it was overrated as all fuck, Hell Awaits and South Of Heaven are both better albums.

It was 1983, when I was 20 yo, the band was Anthrax. Then I went and saw Metallica on the 'Ride the lightning' tour at a club. The most fun I ever had. Mosh pit, beer pitchers flying through the air. A hangover that lasted until the next week. Probably kill me now. I'll never forget it.

Blayne you are right to include Metalcore in this list because that’s how it worked for me. I started in the Devil Wears Prada scene and then moseyed on into the early metallic hardcore Zao scene and have very recently begun dabbling in Slayer. Metalcore at its core (pun intended) is the same ingredients as crossover thrash but used to create a different dish and I think lots of scene kids like myself eventually make their way back to Mecca of thrash.

Overkill and Anthrax solidified my love for Thrash. "I Wish you were Dead" from Overkill's "The Electric Age" and "Madhouse" from Anthrax's "Spreading the Disease", those two songs brought a groove and catchy riffs to what I perceived was a lot of straight forward shredding. I'm surprised you mentioned Metalcore, but not Blackened Thrash, which is the bigger brother of Blackened Speed which you mentioned in the Black Metal episode. I'd say the avatar of Blackened Thrash is Skeletonwitch, though Toxic Holocaust does blend it with crossover thrash a great deal, too!
Also the difference between Speed and Thrash metal is that Speed is a hacksaw, while Thrash is a chainsaw. Both share similar traits, playing really fast, but thrash condenses it into a more potent formula.
It's hard to say whether Anthrax or Overkill is my favorite thrash band. Anthrax writes fun, memorable songs, but Overkill's Horrorscope, The Killing Kind, and The Years of Decay just hit hard for me. Oh well, long live thrash! I'll have to check out some blackened thrash and blackened speed though since I love black metal.
@@TheRealJoeNathan 2020 was an excellent year for Blackened Speed Metal. Of note would be "Rebirth by Blasphemy" by Midnight, and "The Affair of Poisons" by Hellripper. 2019 had "Under the Witching Cross" by Bewitcher and, my personal favourite of the bunch, "Satan Spits on the Children of Light" by Devil Master.
This year we're expecting a new Bewitcher album, and one that has already released called "Through the Gate Eternal" by Demiser.

Thrash has been my favourite metal genre for 15 years or so. Out of all the old school genres, along with just being badass, it seems to be one of the most versatile: it can be fun, aggressive, serious, political, goofy, technical... You name it! And the fusions with other genres, whether it's blackened thrash, crossover, thrash/death or others, all kick ass!
I got into thrash metal as a 12 year old kid in 1992. Actually that’s when I got into Metal period . Really back in the 90s we really didn’t have 1 million different sub genres of metal. We just called metal music metal. Now they were distinctions for the far extremes like glam metal and death metal but yeah in 1992 my family finally got cable so I finally had MTV. It was seeing the music videos for all the singles from Metallica‘s black album and the video for “one” Is what made me an instant Metallica fan. I didn’t understand at the age of 12 what songs were on what albums so I remember saving my allowance up and I went out and bought the first Metallica album I saw which was ride the lightning and over the next two years I got the other four albums that were out at the time. And of course this led to me getting into a whole slew of bands like Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura, etc . As well as other bands that were either metal or hard rock but not really in the thrash genre like Ozzy Osbourne, White Zombie, Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Rage Against The Machine, etc.
No matter what anyone’s opinion of thrash metal is whether they think it’s outdated and they only like newer stuff or they are just a casual fan besides the classic metal bands that started it all thrash metal is without a doubt the most influential genre of metal that there is. Death metal, Nu Metal, and what people call alternative metal i’ll have thrash metal 2.2 as their biggest influence. I really doubt without bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc. that any of those other genres would’ve ever happened. It’s 2021 and if you told me I could only listen to one genre of metal for the rest of my life without a doubt it would be thrash. I mean I think it’s pretty safe to say that classic metal and thrash metal are the biggest and most successful genres in the metal genre. The big four thrash metal bands that we all know of and we all know who they are…. Are all legends today. In 2019 I went to slayers retirement tour and I saw them in a 20,000 seat arena that was very close to being sold out. There was probably around 17,000 people there to see slayer in 2021. The next Metallica album that comes out will go platinum and they will tour the entire globe in every show will be sold out. It’s not like glam metal or Nu Metal or death metal Who all had their day in the sun for three or four years and then was dropped for the hot new thing. And nothing against any of those genres I have bands that I love and all three of those but thrash is just timeless.
I have a special place in my heart for thrash metal; I don't listen to it much anymore, but whenever I do, it still kicks ass. That shows just how timeless the genre is. Anthrax is my personal favorite, but Overkill is a close second.
I got into metal through bands like Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Metallica; but I quickly latched onto thrash metal with Anthrax, Overkill, Testament, Death Angel, Havok, Vektor, and Sepultura. I'll have to check out more Sodom and Kreator though since I haven't listened to a lot of German thrash.
Check out early Destruction and Tankard, also very important to German scene!

My thrash journey started with Kreator's "Pleasure To Kill" and Destruction's early stuff . Of course, I'm almost 50,, so I was the perfect age for those. Also, listen to "Low Life" by Cryptic Slaughter for an amazing experience.
51 here and same but it’s a bit of a blur with Metallica, SLAYER and Exodus. I also picked up a compilation called Speed Metal and it was my introduction to Cryptic Slaughter. In fact “Lowlife” is my alarm and ringtone (when I actually bother to turn my ringer on) much to my wife’s chagrin :)

Surprisingly it was death metal that got me into thrash, I was never really into any metal besides a lil bit of the catchy new metal songs that everyone knew, I bought a “blind ticket” just a random gig ticket and didn’t research the band, I got there and there was this hairy Swedish man on stage with the softest voice when he was speaking, then out of nowhere I heard the gnarliest growl I’d ever heard at that point then I was instantly hooked, the speed, the pits, the crowds energy, the amazing people. I got home and decided to search slayer as I couldn’t remember none of the bands names, who can read those things, so I started leaning towards thrash metal more just because I could understand the band names

How I got into thrash? The year I think was 2015 or 2016, I was 13/14/15 years old and really liked Metallica's black album. Really liked it. I got interrested in learning Metallica's history, and found out about their early material and how they were pioneers in this subgenre called Thrash metal. Started checking out Kill 'em all, Ride the lightning, Master of puppets, ...And Justice for All. They blew my mind and I was all in. Later went on to find other bands in thrash metal. Megadeth, Overkill and Havok early on. And even now, even if I've listened a lot to Testament, Antrhax, Slayer, Flotsam and Jetsam, Exodus. I still find myself to be an absolute Overkill fan. so yeah. Thrash. Started off with a bit of Metallica, and now it's my favourite subgenre of Metal.
For me it all started with Metal Militia... on my cousins ipod...😂 yeah I'm only 22 but WOW what a song and I've been on the thrash boat ever since. Great video as always and FUGGIN SLAYER🤘

BUT: I agree to those comments that say, it was a brief history of thrash, not "how to get into thrash". For me, as I grew up with the classics like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Slayer, Kreator or Testament , I learned much more in your video "How to get into Death Metal", because there you offer much more "starting points" into a subgenre then you do here... Nevertheless, a cool video anyway!
Interesting mention of metalcore since it’s more adjacent. I think bands from the Cleveland scene like Integrity and Ringworm are good reference points for both metal and hardcore folks to like.
As for modern crossover aside from Power Trip (RIP Riley), Mindforce, Ekulu and Enforced come to mind. EDIT: Also forgot about Drain because Drain is your friend.
I feel like Anthrax, being one of the so-called "big four" bands that just so happens to arguably dance with hardcore punk more than the other 3 is a great gateway band for punk and hardcore fans to enter the thrash world.
My gateway to Thrash was Ozzy's No Rest For The Wicked and "that" Black Sabbath song called Symptom Of The Universe. Then I got eargasms with MEGADETH! My favorite Thrash song is Good Mourning/Black Friday.
Zao is one of the most underrated and amazing metalcore bands around, I also recommend everyone check out Converge and Every Time I Die. Cave in is only metalcore on their first album

I’ve been waiting for someone to mention Zao on here. They were a major influence on Metalcore and Death Metal acts in the the 2000s and beyond. And they’ve been around since the early 90s.
So glad the did a little Zao shout-out. They are often overlooked because they were metalcore but they are so different from so many other metalcore bands.

I gotta give it to Blayne in 2018 I hand't heard of Power Trip after I heard them the rest was history. I was fortunate enough to go see them live in Connecticut with my son who was only about 7 at the time and my wife.
We'll always have the memories of that night and my son literally witnessed a legend before his untimely passing.

Integrity honestly might have been the best choice for metalcore, plus their sound is closer to hardcore punk and thrash metal than most of the 90s metalcore bands

I'm a late comer to the game of thrash. It all started with KREATOR's Enemy of God and EXODUS' Shovel Headed Killing Machine. The Gathering by Testament is also one I really enjoy.
you bring up Exodus and Kreator, both albums you mentioned were circa 2004 or so. In my opinion both bands only got better from that point on wards. In the case of Kreator few bands of that vintage predominantly play their 21st century releases live.
I got into metal from Motörhead (Orgasmatron & Rock 'n' Roll eras) , then Survive by Nuclear Assault (an overlooked gem, in my opinion), Testament (Trial By Fire is THE thrash anthem) and Overkill's Hello From The Gutter (I worshipped them then, I kinda still do). I was definitely a thrash maniac back then. Lastly, Flotsam And Jetsam was (and still is) much more than a thrash band.

I was mostly a Zeppelin/classic rock kid then I somehow stumbled upon "Inner Self" by Sepultura and it blew my damn mind. That song, and "Beneath The Remains" in general, was my gateway into metal that wasn't Sabbath or other radio friendly fare.
Seeing Testament live did it for me. After already toe dipping in the thrashpool with a bit of 'tellica, Testament realy made me dive in deeper
Slaya! After they retired I'm into whatever The Acacia Strain is. Brutal fucking Chugs, Perfect break downs and consistently awesome, Just like Slayer.

I'd say the big four, a lot of the Bay Area bands like Death Angel or Testament and some european bands like Artillery with that masterpiece called By Inheritance are the perfect gateway to get into thrash essentials. Catchy, riffy, kickass shit.
The first Thrash band I listened to was definitely Metallica. But the first band I heard that made me go "Hey, I want more of that" was Nevermore. From there I wen to Kreator, and from Kreator the rest of the Thrash. To this day Thrash, Doom and Stoner are my favourite genres.
I’m so glad I got to see Riley with PT before he passed. The dude was an incredible frontman.

I got into thrash via Metallica. Right around the time Death Magnetic came out, I had to do my 8th grade music class project on an "older band that existed before I was born." and my mother bought me Death Magnetic because I liked rock music and it had just come out. I loved the album a lot, and went looking for their other albums. The first one I found was Kill Em All, really loved that one, then found the rest of their 80s stuff. Then I started getting into Megadeth, Slayer, etc. A few years later Bonded By Blood started exploding and I saw them in concert. Big fan of thrash metal, it's really done a good job standing the test of time.
Megadeth with Rust in Peace! And POWER TRIP brought me back to the genre 3 years ago. Digging black/thrash now and 2021 is, so far, an excellent year for Thrash!
Exodus’ The Toxic Waltz is probably what got me into Thrash, and then I started listening to a lot of Crossover afterwards. 😅
Hell yeah. Megadeth and Metallica is what got me into metal to begin with and then I expanded further over time with Slayer Anthrax Testament and Death Angel.

I know Master of Puppets gets all the love, but I prefer RTL and I think its more consistent throughout honestly. Also my personal favorite track from Metallica is Creeping Death. Great lyrics, killer riffs and solos and it might be the song that works best for them in a live setting with the crowd engagement.

The one two punch of Dawn Patrol and Rust In Peace. Want a song that has a guitar solo that makes guitar players cream their pants? Tornado of Souls. Its just the perfect thrash album that came out in the last good year of the first wave of thrash(1990) before it went into a coma for fifteen years.

This one is also not the obvious pick for this band, but I really appriciate the longer songs, variety and the lyrics on this one compared to Reign In Blood.

I found Testament's first album to be rough around the edges in places, but their follow up is the real deal. Trial By Fire, Disciples of the Watch, Into The Pit. Just so much great stuff.

Its a weird one I know, but hear me out. One shocked me about it was how it experimental it was with how it just throws stuff in for the fun of it. Discontinued is the perfect example. They just have like a two minute instrumental intro that includes a kinda funky bass part and I couldn't believe my ears when I first heard it.

I was a teenager in the 80’s. Metallica, megadeth, slayer, were all my introductions to thrash.
How did I get into thrash? I imagine many people have a similar story:
When Master of Puppets was released we were still into Appetite for Destruction and AC/DC. Group of us stayed at a friends house, smoked up and drank some beers (we were about 14. Good times!). In the morning, my mate stuck a tape in the deck, said “Check this out guys, it’s fucking heavy as. “. Cue acoustic guitar part. WTF? Was the general reaction. Then the opening riff of Battery cut in. Oh my fucking god. Minds blown. Brains all over the wall. It fucking KILLED us. What an awesome album. Still pull it out sometimes and have a listen. Don’t let anyone tell you Metallica sucks or Lars sucks or whatever the fuck people say. For a time there, they were the heaviest and most brutal thing around. Still maintain Battery is heavier than anything Slayer ever did. And I love Slayer.
Metallica man. Respect.

started with kill em all. The Four Horsemen is one of my fav thrash songs to this day.
My mates a huge Thrasher and he got me into Lost Society years ago. So good live. Woke up the next day needing a neck brace.

You forgot to mention that the very first Thrash song was written by Queen, Stone Cold Crazy.

All of this is so hilarious to me. I was born in 1970. My older brother got me into AC/DC, but Mercyful Fate scared me and I threw his cassettes into the fireplace. When I was 13 a guy in my typing (with a typewriter) class wore Ride the Lightning shirts but he scared me too. Then I got into more punk and New Wave really, then my intro to thrash was actually was listening to punk radio show from Berkeley, Maximum Rock and Roll, they played Hit the Lights, on e DJ liked it, the others all got mad and said it wasn't punk. Then my friend Dave who wasn't punk or new wave, he wore jeans and flannel, he walked straight up to me like he was on a Mission from God, and gave me a blank cassette recording copy of Slayer,'s best album "You have to listen to this". The only Slayer album I really listen to is the first CD of Decade of Aggression, live. Later, you will love this Mr. Comedy, I did a Psychology lecture at University on Love and Caring, where I wrote the lyrics to the Antichrist on the chalkboard and then played the part where Tom Araya stops the crowd between songs and says, "If you see someone going down, help them out, all right? That's what we are here to do , help each other out!" It's I think harder to evangelize this way now, you can't put a physical object like a cassette in your friend's hand. To get someone into music you have to hack their earbuds.

@@78kombi Thank you for your reply. I think I would like to see KD live maybe, I honestly don't really listen to music the way I did when I was younger. I ended up doing something like his make-up later, in maybe 86 after I got weirder than my older brother ever was, but only for Halloween. 99% of my friends were not ready for that level of sacrilege, certainly not in public. Even Banger has a hard time figuring out how to deal with subject matter like that. You win some, you lose some. It's worth mentioning in the context here at least because for the recording of Metallica's early work in Denmark KD was always involved, my guess is you know more about this than I ever will, but it speaks too to my point of physically meeting. I am writing this in thrashzone south/east bay, Gary Holt still lives near here.

Man, that French accent Métallica really had me laugh (I live in Québec)! Megadeth & Testament were my gateway, then Exodus moved in and that threw everybody out. Never new where to categorize Coroner but they were also part of my steady listens in that period.
