We spend a lot of time on BangerTV talking about the way metal sounds, but what about the way it looks? The Fabric of Metal takes viewers on a cultural tour of the mainstays of metal style - from battle vests and bullet belts to leather daddies and corpse paint. Host Sarah Kitteringham hits up musicians, superfans, and metal scholars for some anthropological discussion about the origin and meaning of the unique (and sometimes questionable) sartorial expressions that have been sewn into the scene for nearly half a century.
BangerTV wants to create the next great series for our global metal community and we want your help! Introducing the Heavy Metal Democracy Project. Here’s how it works: we’ve created four series pilots which you can watch, vote, and comment on below. Once the votes are in, we’ll greenlight the pilot with the most votes into a full six-part series.

I think the level of nerdyness in this one would be quite impressive. Sign me in!!
love a good nerd sesh
@@BangerTV Muff diving sesh too \m/
This one isn't gonna win the votes, but I hope that just means it's put on the backburner until a later date. Don't abandon this idea, Banger!
I don’t have a battle jacket anymore but i do agree with Visigoth dude saying don’t put patches for bands you don’t listen to, same goes for concert shirts (hear that hollywood)
Exactly. Rihanna and a Kardashian (don't know which one) are examples to that fact
In London UK more people seem to own Ramones tee-shirts than copies of its alive... And I wonder how many people with stones tee-shirts actually listen to exile? On the other hand I do like seeing stones and ramones tee-shirts all over!
When I was 12yo circa 1980 I wrote ACDC on my notebook at school. I was bit clueless and although I did like rock I wasn't a huge music fan in general and didn't know their songs. I thought the stylized lettering was cool. A bullying kid at school spotted it and asked me to name two songs from ACDC in front of a bunch of classmates. I couldn't and they all laughed like cruel middle schoolers do. Lesson learned. Don't be a dumb poser. LOL!
Naah.. These metal rules only apply to metal heads. For everyone else, doesnt matter. People will always recognise a jacket purchased vs something that is a labour of love. So relax, its alright
Somehow I can’t comment on the Banger website so I’ll post it here: This is the one. It’s a return to the scholarly documentary content that separates Banger from the rest of the metal horde.
exactly
This is the one for sure. Please continue to make this series!
Props to getting Jake from Visigoth, Such a cool dude!
great dude, great band
This is soo well done.
I hope that even if this doesn’t win, it will eventually become a multi part series. Sarah is a great host, super passionate and really knowledgeable on anything metal. Love this 🤘🤘🤘
In german we call it a "Kutte" wich translates to a Monks Robe.
I like this religous connotation a lot better than "battle Vest"
All the Yes. This is a love letter to the culture and to its stance. Seeing that battle vests get somewhat rare at concerts nowadays, I'd love to see them getting some analysis and love.
(edit: wow, used 'love' three times in one brief comment. Goes to show what I feel about the pilot)
I've seen a resurgence of battle vests around here which makes me proud as an old metalhead.
@@tomwisniewski8988 that's cool and good to hear for sure! I wonder if that has to do with this 'new wave' of more traditional heavy metal?
@@schwermetall666 It is for sure. The kids wearing them are in their early 20s. I'm 48 so I don't go as hard fashion wise as I used to aside from my closet of black shirts but these kids are repping hard and I was seeing them at every show. Ain't gonna lie, I get a little misty watching them at shows.
@@tomwisniewski8988 so there's still some proud pariahs out there, who want to stand out instead of blend in and actually *do* something to show it. That's the spirit
@@schwermetall666 Oh, just fucking stop dude. Let people enjoy things.
I agree with the notion that battle vest is a silly name and it kinda grinds my gears. However they are probably the best way to give a person an overview of your taste in metal and aesthetics. A well thought out jacket can tell you more about a person than a 10 minute talk. And if you like their jacket you can use those 10 minutes to ask them where they got some of those awesome patches from.
Banger is killing it today with the new content! Also, CONGRATS on the wedding, Sarah!!!
3 years later, I would love to see this continue into a larger series. There's so much nuance to the different scenes and sub-genres and how they look. If you're relatively well versed, you can often identify someone's sub of choice just based on how they look at shows and festivals.
That was brilliantly nostalgic Sarah, it brought back many happy memories.
Awesome video! I completely agree with Jake, I’ll always choose making my own vest instead of purchasing a bastardized product.
You definately have my vote Sarah, best researched and most effort put in of the pilot episodes. The question would be where else would this show go and I'd be curious to see!
*Jake (from Visigoth)* is an international treasure.
And Caladan Brood.
You need to find that one guy who shows up to the concert in a battle trench coat.
lol
I love patch jackets, and they're a big part of what I enjoy about festivals each year. You get to see so many different creations, and each one is unique. I've spent years building mine up. The other pilots are good, but I'd love to see this subject explored more. If the winner does well, maybe Banger can come back and give this one a little love?
Just. Wow. The passion and research that the people at BangerTV are putting into these series should be applauded.

That's an unusually large amount of bootleg patches.
A patch can bring in more cash to the band than a sold cd, so make an effort to by official patches.
This is so so so good! I love Visigoth! And I love battle vests! And I love taking the history and culture of metal seriously! Six hundred and sixty six thumbs up.
Jake said "emotionally INVESTED in." I see what he did there.
I love this idea! I was curious as to what would actually be talked about or how the format would work and after seeing this I’m sold!
I'm watching this while sewing a patch on my vest! Voted for this. Hope this series gets made.
Amazing idea! Keep it alive, Sarah! You are the one to do it!
Love this one and all the other pilots.
Nice to see Simon from Pull the Plug Patches being interviewed. Great job guys
I hope this series gets made cuz it seems great!
I've been a metal head for the past 30 years. The term 'Battle Vest' is a new one to me.
Cool! For me it's about the artwork, which is so much a part of metal. Those shapes and colors. I lean mostly towards traditional commercial metal like Dio, Priest, Maiden, King Diamond/ Mercyful Fate. Part of the reason I love these bands is because of their artwork. I was listening to Black Sabbath years before Kiss. But the Destroyer album cover got my attention. It looks like comic book art. The same thing happened with Acid Witch. I loved the art, which I thought was funny and looked amazing. I liked their music. Then I bought their CD and a shirt. I wore the shirt to a show and ended up in a conversation about the band. I enjoyed that.
05:45 that Disincarnate patch! You don't see those every day! \m/
The official ones are woven and ovalshaped with a blue or red border. And also extremely rare.
The one on the vest has to be custom made or a bootleg. But even those are hard to come by.
It's difficult to see, but it seems to be silkscreen printed and pretty good quality too. I'd say custom made, probably mexican.
I had worse experiences with bootlegs of inferior quality. Asian crap in bulk. Fading patches, even shiny ones, plastic cardboard...
Met one of my best mates in a liquor store I was working at cause I noticed he was wearing an Emperor shift , started a conversation and 15 years later , still best mates !
Hope you come back to this, it sounds like it could be an amazing series.
It has to be The Fabric of Metal! Please!
This is the format with the most love for Metal!
This dude just introduced me to Aria and....damn. They sound awesome.
That dude is from Caladan Brood as well, which needs to be recognized.
I like this one a lot. I kinda feel like it'd make a better special than ongoing series, but I love the passion here.
This is a great idea, but I can't really see it stretching over 6 episodes without getting a bit repetitive. Perhaps a 1 hour special or over 2 episodes.
This is pretty amazing! In my undergrad, I wrote papers on the role of T-shirts as social identifiers in the heavy metal community (sociology major). I think this show is awesome! Such a great topic. The interviews are fantastic.
Metal is more than music man! I'm digging this episodes. Big 🖤 from India.
THIS is gonna be my favorite show!!!! I Voted so much for this!!
This is lovely. Thank you! I'd like to see/hear more. 🤘
Love the evilfeast patch on on of Jake's vest. Super underrated. Also Visigoth is awesome.
Awesome Show Sarah 🎸😎😱 I'm wearing my Meshuggah Battlevest today🎸😎
In the PNW we have battle hoodies try to wear a vest in wet 32 degree weather, they are a work of art for Metal Heads.
I'm all in for this!
This new project looks awesome! Love it!
I just saw Jinjer last week and a young guy saw a patch on my vest from a band he never heard before but was going to see them soon and asked me for some recommendations so he could get familiar with the band and enjoy the show more. I thought that was really Flippin cool.
Gen X'er here. Back in the early 80s we used what jackets we had. They didn't have to be leather or denim. Most of them back then is due to denim being the fashion of the time and most of us had 'em; worn out and new ones. Just find a comfortable jacket you like and slap some patches on it.
And back then we called them band jackets or patch jackets. Calling them battle vests just makes me think of those office guys that boast about being weekend warriors.
Definitely looking forward to more on this.
Try working security at a country n' western bar.... You'll experience some battles. Metal fans hardly ever cause trouble. So I have to agree that battle is the wrong word.
Pull the plug patches!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Amazing stuff, and Sara good work keep it up, 👍
Sara is beautiful and she always does great work so with that keep rocking
Awesome content, keep it coming.
Wish I still had mine from the 80s. There were only a few metalheads that wore one back in my highschool days.
When I’m feeling down or having a rough day, I throw on my vest and I feel more like me.
I'd really appreciate a full documentary on this topic. Peter Beste's book is a fantastic visual companion, but you have the chance to tell the story here
I'm struggling with pointing out "metal fashion" as a thing. As someone very fashion conscious, I've gotta admit... I'm conflicted on this one.
I truly love this!! This has my vote!
Battle jacket...
So glad you included Visigoth!! I recently discovered them (and your band too Sarah!), and I love both bands!
Yessss! This would be so cool!! Sarah and the guests are awesome as well
I used to have battle vests but I’ve had worn them out ! But I like wearing bands T-shirt now !
i love this channel
If I have to choose one of the four.. I choose this!!
I should make my own best right away.
that was pretty cool! i'm agree that i hate the term "Battle Vest" for anything that's not being worn in actual battle, but i get it
When we getting more episodes of this? Great stuff.
I'm a simple man, I see Jake, I click
I hate to be the scene kid here, but @ 7:22, ASKING ALEXANDRIA SHIRT YAAAAAA BABY! (Before you write me off, I love true metal like Visigoth and Manilla Road as well. I just have a big spot in my heart for heavy Warped Tour bands)
Sad to see that this is behind in the votes, I think it has the most potential. The trailer alone was awesome, getting Jake and Simon from pull the plug patches. Of course it might be just me as I am a huge fan of battle vests and have three myself, but I love the nerdyness and the cultural aspect. I don't think we really need another guitar gear or genre show, there's dozens of them.
My vest I wore it out one day and a guy came to me and said "hey where can I buy that" i told him "I made it, gotta learn to sew" .
I struggled to find a vest that fits perfectly, as there don't seem to be any standardized sizes. So I switched gears and put some of my patches I already bought to a shoulder bag, which I know carry everytime I leave the house lml_(^>^)_lml
I’m a prob older than most people here, but back in the 90s, you couldn’t wear a bands patch without seeing the band play live.
Thank Christ, more documentary content
This is cool. More please.
I think this one is the more intresting (I mean we want all of them but), in that it encapsulate various research fields and intervenants from different backgrounds. It has more depth I feel, and come back to a more antropologyst and social studies point of view that sam dunn popularized. Also it's very well made, from the shots to the effects (careful with the sounds of the leaf ^^). The only critic I can make is that I didn't like the sequences of the intervenants walking in slow-mo, I really don't want it to be a fashion show, in the parade sens of the word.
Visigoth is brutally awesome. But can we acknowledge Jake as one of the co-creators of the BEST Epic Black Metal album ever released? I mean, Caladan Brood Echoes of Battle is top notch. Nice pilot BTW
What's the name of the outro track please, I love it !?
I really expected to have no interest in this idea and I ended up liking this episode quite a bit. Really ties back to Sam's Sociology beginnings and the movie that started it all.
I got that Insurrection shirt. 🤘😁🤘
I fully love this. Voted
6:33 Is the term Vest a loose one when it comes to metal?
Is 'Battle Vest' an American term? Never heard it in Scotland. I've heard it referred to as a 'patch jacket'.
4:39 KAT!!! Is so good to see this band in no polish production
Amazing
When will another 'Fabric of metal' video come out?
The first guy talking about his vest quotes almost verbatim Nicholas Cage in "Wild at heart". :) Cheers to him.
Awesome series ,I fuckin love it\,,/
You guys should check out and make a video of Is this band from the UK called hellfekted Is amazing black and thrash
My new order testament shirt is getting all filled with holes and faded so I’m gonna turn it into a backpatch
LOVE LOVE LOVE!
I liked this idea
Battle vest? Call it 'Kutte' (German term) it rolls off the tongue a little better.... Please do the series!
cool show, kittyham!
I feel like if I do a vest that I would do kinda like a leather biker style, but my music preferences are more on the old school 80s hair metal bands like Mötley Crüe and Poison to name a few and without a doubt Metallica. At the same time, I would also incorporate my interest and love of all things of the patriotic America and even a big fan of all things professional wrestling and WWE; obviously you can't have music and wrestling connection without mentioning Motörhead and Triple H, because you can't say that you don't have a guilty pleasure of Motörhead if you're a fan of WWE and especially not importantly a fan of Triple H.
This is a cool idea
My friend made me a vest, I dont wear it, because I feel weird wearing something he made.
I gotta make my own
I'll always be a METAL HEAD, fuck the jungle noise!
