Glacier National Park: Grizzly vs Moose

While working in Glacier National Park over the summer at the Many Glacier Hotel, I witnessed this crazy occurrence. The Mama Moose had twins, and after several days of stalking them, the bear got the first baby. However, when he went for the second baby, this is what happened.
It's been just over a month since this happened, and as far as we can tell the baby moose is still safe and sound due to the Mama Moose's courage and constancy. Let's go, queen.
And yes, this is the original video and I have all rights.

    1) Bears are way faster than you think
    2) Moose are way more dangerous than you think

I knew both of those things since I was 16 and I'm 68 now... Go spend a summer in Yellowstone or other big national park, do some back country hiking and you'll either learn about the critters or you'll die of stupidity... One or the other. Listen to the Park Rangers!

I've backpacked in bear country, and most encounters were the sight of a bear's rear-end as it ran away. But my most nervous encounter was face to face with a moose on a narrow trail in a mountaintop in Maine. I literally had nowhere to go except into the thick bushes, and the moose walked by and completely ignored me. The size of these things is astounding.

I’m from Quebec and moose are known to be unpredictable. Years ago my wife and I crossed into Maine and the border guard told us to be vigilant as it was late evening and moose were sighted. We spotted 17 moose on the road that night. Took us 2 hours to do 40 miles. One stood in the middle of the road and when we approached he started running alongside our car like a moose wingman. He was about a foot away from my door. A park ranger in New Hampshire told us moose have no sense of where to go when faced with danger. This makes for unpredictable behaviour.

I'm not convinced there is one there. Moose despise bears because they do take their calves, so this one didn't need any more provocation than the bear approaching it too near. After the moose gave it time to reconsider and move off, it correctly assesed the bear was entertaining stalking it. As you know, moose have strong fight or flight reactions, and this moose was in the water where it was vulnerable, so it chose fight and went on the offensive. Bears swim just fine, so swimming away was not an option for the moose.

Face to face with many bears and moose over the years. I've told a bear to go home and it did. (easier to do when your buddy has a shotgun and you have a .44 magnum)
But the most tense encounter was suddenly discovering during a hike in the rain that I was six feet from a moose...A cow with a calf...wait, two calves!...Holy crap, three calves! Eye contact was unnerving, like:

There is a wooded lodge area down the road going West and I stayed there first though and I was told not to even worry about bears, I was told to be deathly afraid of Moose, especially during mating seasons or if it were a momma Moose.
I got charged by a bull moose coming out of my cabin once and I got to see 2 moose lock horns and fight for about 15 minutes, but I never saw a bear. I think I know why now. That bear was terrified!
:43 - :44 You can hear when the Moose is running, suddenly it starts clomping and sounds like horse hooves, cause the thing is lifting its legs up high when running and hoping to bring them down with serious force on that bears back or hindquarters. When I was young I was on a camping trip and we got stuck in a construction zone. Out of nowhere a bull moose came running out of the woods and charged headlong into a bulldozer. I can still remember the dull, wet "thud" as its head slammed into the dozer blade. It simply began to walk away, stopped for a moment and turned its head back and gave the dozer a look as if to say "That's right. And there's more of that waiting for you if you don't smarten up'.
That bear never stood a chance.

My Dad and I were sledding in the Trapper Creek, AK area back in '08. We had been out all day and were on our way back to the lodge with a guide in front of us. It was night and all I could see ahead of me was the taillight of the guide brake, dissapear for a moment and his headlight coming back towards us. I could hear him yelling something and before I could ask what he said, I saw the giant cow that looked like a monster in that headlight running after him towards me and my Dad.
We turned around as quick as we could and hauled ass behind the guide at first, then he slowed and fell behind us. Hollered that if he got rammed to not stop.
We got good speed and she eventually stopped chasing us.
I'm going to be completely honest, I straight up pissed myself. That was hands down the scariest thing that's ever happened to me. Don't underestimate moose.

    1. Didn’t realise moose were so big.
    2. Didn’t realise there was something that could make a grizzly run away in fear.
    3. How fckn fast they both ran was terrifying.

They are amazing, and very stealthy/quiet in the trees too. I've seen some massive ones here in their heartlands, eastern Canada. People see them on video and equate it to an elk or large deer...not even close. Ive seen heads mounted that were larger than a bisons, they can get 6-8 feet tall at the shoulder, and another 3 or 4 feet of antler... king of the woods. They killed a lot of people up here just wandering out into the highways at dawn and dusk, they have no fear. Infact, I know 3 instances where moose ran out into the side of a speeding car. Head on the car would sweep the legs and the moose usually crashed its 1000lbs through the roof on your head. Often the moose survives initial impact, rarely the person. In New Brunswick we ended up putting fences along the entire length of the national highway to keep them off it xD.

I had two moose charge my F-150 very late one night in Ontario. I was hypnotized-driving at that point, just passing rock outcrop after rock outcrop, until suddenly two rocks moved and charged me. I still don't know how I avoided them....I had the truck up on two wheels (by accident of course) but I missed them both and managed to get the truck flat again. As they moved toward me, it seemed they were so tall that maybe I could drive under them....the size was nothing like what I ever expected. After that, I had new respect for highways in moose country.
