Apparently, the caribou felt it was unable to ascend the far bank of the river and decided to return to the side it came from instead. The bear chose to get on land anticipating the caribous return to shore. When it realized the caribou reversed direction the bear did not hesitate to resume the pursuit. I think watching this will dispel any doubt about a brown bear's endurance let alone its speed.
The caribou was hurt. The grizzly was using scent to track the caribou, not using sight. That's why the bear retraced the caribou's steps rather than pursuing directly through the water.

"Why didn't the bear turn?" When the caribou went back into the water. It's because the bear knew if he swam out, the caribou could swim right back to shore and escape. The bear went to the bank to force the caribou to swim out farther. Bears are excellent swimmers.
@@wardosravin It most likely went back in the water because it was upstream of the bear, which forces the bear to either swim to shore and then run upstream and jump back in, or start swimming upstream. That caribou never would have escaped the bear on land. Most heard animals like caribou are sprinters, they stay in big herds and they all run different directions when attacked to confuse the predator. A grizzly can maintain a 15mph lope for an ungodly amount of time, so one v. one the caribou's only chance was to somehow lose the bear on the river.

Holy shit, I’m guessing it could only track the caribou that far by scent… really puts things into perspective. I backpack every now and then and tbh their ability to smell and track food that well is scary lol
I'm guessing the Caribou instinctively thought being in a body of water is safer than being on dry land and hence it lingered in the river even though it had a head start. You can tell by the way it crossed the river and went right back in. Something it may have done at some point to save it's life against other predators like wolves. This time it proved to be the wrong choice.
@@brycerush98 not if they haven’t dealt with bears before. They don’t instinctively know what to do this is learned behavior. Fight or flight can only get you so far in nature
It's shocking to see so many people commenting that they had no idea a bear can run that fast and with that kind of stamina. A bear can run up to 25 and 30 miles per hour. This is why bear experts tell you if a bear is tracking you, don't run because you will never outrun a bear.
Bears are faster than people initially, but humans can outrun pretty much any land animals. Though escaping a bear when it is litterally right behind you is impossible, people can out run a bear given distance.

That bears endurance was psycho it sprinted entire time even though swim and through half run and swim jumping the dragged that animal out and a couple hundred yards!
A lion or tiger could never do that, even after all that running and swimming, neck snapping, dragging, and then ya gotta fight off a rival for the spoils. Unmatched power and stamina!
Prey is hard to come by in the north American tundra, unlike the African Savannah which is teeming with various bovine and antelope species... Scarcity + their time constraints due to hibernation has made the bear a much more motivated and relentless predator.
A wise man once said, “If you are on a hiking trip with some friends and a bear starts chasing you, just know if you can outrun one of your friends, you’ll be okay”
swimming is what they use against a wolf pack, wolves run better on land but can't swim very well because of shorter legs, the caribou probably learned how to throw off a wolf and assumed bears were the same, but bears are far better than any deer adjacent existence in the water so it essentially was caught by its own assumption of what its normal predators would have done.
Thank You for no annoying music! Indeed, there is no man-made music in the wilds. And I would not have guessed the grizzly would have half that much endurance. The caribou became exhausted while in the first leg of crossing the water. ThanX for showing!
Correct! Stalked the moose! Other wise a no catch! Moses family can work it like long distances for days! Yogi is smarter then the average bear! He ate snacks and let's the lame moose slowly break down to his chase/ snag!
The caribou was either young or weak and thin and that’s why he was by himself. The bear though was incredibly strong and realized right away the caribou was an easy target.
Bears, like all predators, will pick off the weak and the sick or elderly because it’s easier than getting into a fight with something it can’t beat.Remember, wildlife have no medical insurance, and if they get injured trying to feed themselves, they just become prey too.
The main takeaway from this video is that, for all of a grizzly's ferociousness, power, and muscle, is the fact that they have cardio for days. They may look kind of clumsy when they are stumbling along, but they can cover uneven ground like few animals on planet earth. This is why you will never, NEVER, outrun one.

@@upstate5101 it's easy hope it ain't hungry lol
Apparently, the caribou felt it was unable to ascend the far bank of the river and decided to return to the side it came from instead. The bear chose to get on land anticipating the caribous return to shore. When it realized the caribou reversed direction the bear did not hesitate to resume the pursuit. I think watching this will dispel any doubt about a brown bear's endurance let alone its speed.
I think it was hurt.
The caribou was hurt. The grizzly was using scent to track the caribou, not using sight. That's why the bear retraced the caribou's steps rather than pursuing directly through the water.
I wonder exactly what you are basing that on. The two guys that were filming this never suggested that was the case.
@@ironwolfgaming9632
Or the bear did that because it’s faster on land then in the water therefore he can cover more distance to be able to catch up to the caribou easier
After all that running and swimming it still has the strength to drag the caribou around like a laundry bag. Such powerful animals.

"Why didn't the bear turn?" When the caribou went back into the water.
It's because the bear knew if he swam out, the caribou could swim right back to shore and escape. The bear went to the bank to force the caribou to swim out farther. Bears are excellent swimmers.
Plus the bear would be swimming up river
Not only that but the bear knew it would tire the caribou out if it forced it to swim longer.
And you can tell this bear was an experience hunter paced himself first then once he crossed that first pond he kicked it into another gear
So it makes you wonder why did the caribou go back in the water?
@@wardosravin It most likely went back in the water because it was upstream of the bear, which forces the bear to either swim to shore and then run upstream and jump back in, or start swimming upstream. That caribou never would have escaped the bear on land. Most heard animals like caribou are sprinters, they stay in big herds and they all run different directions when attacked to confuse the predator. A grizzly can maintain a 15mph lope for an ungodly amount of time, so one v. one the caribou's only chance was to somehow lose the bear on the river.
Jeez the absolute endurance of that bear is incredible. He ran the length of like 20 football fields swam accross a lake ran up a beach swam back accross the lake without even ever slowing down.Terrifying. You enjoy that well deserved meal big guy.

The Caribou thought " How can i use my speed and stamina advantage against this grizzly".. and proceeds to swim back and forth through the river.
swimming is what they use against a wolf pack, wolves run better on land but can't swim very well because of shorter legs, the caribou probably learned how to throw off a wolf and assumed bears were the same, but bears are far better than any deer adjacent existence in the water so it essentially was caught by its own assumption of what its normal predators would have done.
