Those who were growing up in the 70's and early 80's know Peter Gabriel is the real deal and doesn't need validation from anyone least of all, music critics who can't pull their collective tongues out of each other's arses long enough to feel his lyrical poetry sweep over them and lift their souls to a higher plane.
Thanks Mr Jim Kerr for alerting us to this. Peter Gabriel's voice is still as magic as it was in the 70s and what a great performance this is with that superb orchestra. Wonderful!
What an excellent performance by a very talented musician, writer and humanitarian. Some of the comments below reflect more on the anger and bitterness of the individual writing it than on Peter Gabriel's ability. One can only feel sorry for the poor chap. Well done PG. You are happy, creative, successful, wealthy and a man with a kind heart. If only the vitriolic critics below could bury their envy they could maybe enjoy your talents!
Strange thing this but if you ever go camping in the area he is singing about, it has a beauty about it that this songs captures absolutely. I don't even own any tunes by peter but I know that he really captured something in this tune. If you are English the area has a resonance with a very long lost past.
This man is an absolute genius. He continues to give truly outstanding performances which sound just as good - if not better - than they did 30 years ago. Oh, and SpireaXY, Peter holds the record for the most VMAs won in a single night for 'Sledgehammer'. But of course if you think it's shit, it really must be shit because you're the be all and end all of music critics.
Peter is the greatest rocker of all time. Just check out his track record from start until today and if you still don't think so then there's something wrong with you.
This is a special song which feels like it carries deep meaning in Gabriel's life - possibly a psychedelic experience. In any case he is on great form in this performance, much better than Letterman. A classic song, a great performer.
@SJGibbons1000 hes the frontman of the scottish rock band "Simple Minds". They got popular during the 80s...he showed this link on the official facebook fanpage of SM...
@SpireaXY Your wrong , Yes Gabriel went the way of most old rockers and went for easy pop money later in life , but still he did creative things along the way , But way back when times were young he was just simply brilliant , The orchestration he did in early Genesis was awesome and he didn't slap together cinche 2 minute songs , they were excellent well thought out stories and themes with just brilliant musicians. But time changes all. Still their is some greatness left over in his works.
I really really really recognise the violinist in the front row that the camera focuses on numerous times throughout the performance. Middle-aged man with curly grey hair, my mind keeps saying it's Guy Chambers but I don't think it is. Anyone got any ideas?
Peter may have moved on from Genesis. creatively he was away ahead of the rest of the band who were very quick to make pop records. Phil Collins must have been pleased for if Peter had stayed he would still only be a good drummer. Like him or hate him.Gabriel is a creative genius and a showman who happens to write about what he believes in!!! The money from his pop phase enabled him to make choices about has career!!!
First of all I am a big Peter Gabriel fan. However, these songs aren't suitable for an orchestra. I'm surprised the musician's don't fall asleep playing three notes over and over again. Great song but I think you got it wrong this time Peter. Maybe retirement looms!
Those were the days!
man, his voice hasn't changed at all. still sounds as good as he did 30 years ago!
Vocally he is as good as he was in the late 70's early 80's, seen him live a true GREAT.
Peter Gabriel is the best of the best! The 70's and 80's were great times.❤
a song from 76 still pleasing crowds.Gabriel is the man!

This gave me goosbumps! it's amazing! I love it - I like how the conductor is so into it, he looks like a little jumpy thing!
Love this man. Pure genius.

this is bloody brilliant, orchestration is superb
I really don't think I've heard a more polished orchestral arrangement. Hooray Peter!
Thx, Peter, Jim & Jools :-)
Man, he still sounds so good. Hardly any change in his voice.
Love this. Think the conductor is pretty awesome too!
This is fantastic!
Was a great lineup last night. Noah & the whale, P Gabriel, Lana Del Rey, The Horrors. Some real talent right there

Just plain epic. Period.
Always wonderful, unarguable talent.

Peter Gabriel has an orchestra following him around because he's Peter fucking Gabriel. Superb arrangement.
Dont bother looking at the comments below - just sit back, let your mind wonder and enjoy this version of this song - thats what im doing!!
@SpireaXY Ha ha! Thanks for that gave me a right laugh, you're quite funny in a ranting kind of way!
Keep 'em comin,' bud.
@bgisger
me too..!
@SpireaXY i respect your opinion, even when its not justified...
dear Jim dont watch the news at night for a good night sleep and a clear peacefull mind. and please call Martin Gore and make a song with him.
Perhaps they're more involved in the amazing songwriting than how many notes they're playing.
When did Peter Gabriel turn into David Essex
jim kerr brought me here :)
@SpireaXY haha that's better! You obviously tried a bit harder that time, nice one.
@SJGibbons1000 dude, are you serious?
@SpireaXY i feel quite sorry for you. just take your weird ideas away and the rest of us will enjoy this

@MFDReesha i respect every human being, though he's a jerk...
he should've done sledgehammer instead.

@SpireaXY What a shame. Thought you were quite funny but it must've been a flash in the pan. Your dullness is a disappointment.
